Disneyland Resort Update for March 18, 2024
News and Views
New Pixar Fest details revealed
There's still more than a month left of the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival, but last week the resort released brand-new details of the event that will roll in just four days after the wine barrels roll off.
Pixar Fest returns April 26 through August 4, 2024, with a new Better Together: A Pixar Pals Celebration! parade at Disney California Adventure and new Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular at Disneyland park already announced. In addition to the Turning Red float previously announced, new concept art released for the parade shows a second float unit featuring Joe Gardner and his band students from Soul.

New for this event is Club Pixar, described as “an interactive DJ dance atmosphere” in the Hollywood Backlot at DCA. This has the potential to be a worthy replacement for the Mad T Party, though without the live band to amp up the entertainment value.
Younger guests get their own dance party at the Pixar Pals Playtime Party in the Fantasyland Theater in Disneyland, which Disney says will offer “a high-energy show, interactive games and other activities.” From concept art provided, it looks like some props from a bug's land may make an appearance at this party. The adjacent Troubadour Tavern will offer Pixar-themed food and beverages.
Disney California Adventure will use Pixar Fest to add a fourth food-focused event to their calendar, with six festival marketplaces opening on May 10, each featuring food and beverages inspired by a different Pixar film. The Paradise Garden Grill in DCA will also feature a menu inspired by the Disney/Pixar animated feature Coco.

Disneyland Forward gets green light to take next step
Disneyland Forward, the $1.9B, multi-year expansion proposal for the Disneyland Resort, cleared another major hurdle last week when the Anaheim Planning Commission cleared the company to take the next step forward, and seek approval from the Anaheim City Council for their plan.
The green light came in the wake of a planning commission meeting, which lasted more than five hours and included statements of support from Disney cast members and Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock, as well as concerns voiced by local residents. One point of contention is Disney's request to purchase Magic Way, Hotel Way and a section of Clementine Street from the city for $40M. In February, Disney presented a results of a traffic study which concluded that 99% of the traffic on Magic Way is vehicles arriving to or leaving from Disney property.
The company will present its plan to the Anaheim City Council on April 16.

Disney first announced the Disneyland Forward initiative in March 2021, weeks before the resort reopened from the 14-month pandemic closure. The company said it wanted the City of Anaheim to revisit the 1993 Disneyland Resort Specific Plan, which set up land use “districts,” with specific rules governing each.
Disney says it has filled all of the space in the district earmarked as theme park, and has no place to expand without taking out existing park space, as was the case when Big Thunder Ranch was razed to make room for Star Wars Galaxy's Edge. Plans to build a new resort hotel were stymied in 2018, in part because the site proposed for the project was deemed to be part of the parking district. The company wants updates that would permit integrated development of new theme park, hotel, shopping and entertainment venues on land Disney already owns.
Since announcing the expansion plan, Disney has held community events to review the plans with Anaheim residents and interested locals, made presentations to local business and community groups, and participated in planning commission workshops. Throughout the process, Disney officials have emphasized that they aren't seeking tax concessions or public funding for any future expansion.

Through all of this, and even with the publication of a massive 900-page Environmental Impact Review, with its mind-numbing 15,000 pages of appendices, details about exactly what Disney plans to build should it obtain the necessary permissions are vague. Disney executives have spoken about the potential expansion several times, but always in terms of what could be done, and usually referencing attractions and lands already found at Disney theme parks around the globe. Possible themes include the previously-announced Avatar experience (Animal Kingdom), the World of Frozen (Hong Kong Disneyland) and Zootopia (Shanghai Disneyland). During a 2023 investor summit, Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro spoke about the opportunity to bring the worlds of Black Panther and Coco to life.
The proposal also includes the potential for new hotels, entertainment venues, shopping districts and restaurants to the Anaheim resort. The company has previously stated the project would be complete by 2040, well before Disneyland's 100th anniversary.

Wondrous Journeys returns this week
Wondrous Journeys debuted at Disneyland part of the Disney100 festivities, and ran from January though August, 2023. The nighttime spectacular includes a soaring soundtrack and colorful animation projected onto Sleeping Beauty Castle, the buildings of Main Street, U.S.A., the facade of “it's a small world” and the Cider Mill on Tom Sawyer Island. Most nights the show also includes fireworks.
Disneyland will again present Wondrous Journeys March 22 through April 14, and its worth making an effort to catch the show if you're visiting during that time. You can read more about the show, including tips for getting the best view, here on MousePlanet.

Patrick Warburton surprises guests at Soarin' Over California
Actor Patrick Warburton made a surprise appearance at Disney California Adventure last week, briefly reprising his role as the “chief flight attendant” for Soarin' Over California.
Warburton surprised visitors during the preshow, and then came into the attraction building to continue their safety briefing. The actor managed to work in a nod to Kronk, his character from Disney's 2000 animated feature The Emperor's New Groove.
Soarin' Over California was an opening-day attraction at Disney California Adventure, and was updated to Soarin' Around the World in 2016. Disney reverts the ride to its original California itinerary every year as part of the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival, which this year runs through April 22, 2024.
Magic Keys sales continue
It's been almost two weeks since Disneyland resumed sales of new Magic Key passes, and at press time all but one Magic Key type was still available for purchase. This is the longest period that Magic Key passes have been available for sale since the program debuted, and it's somewhat surprising to us that they haven't sold out yet. This is only the second time Disney has sold new Magic Keys since suspending sales in September 2023. When Disney last opened Magic Key sales in January, the offering lasted less than a day.
It's entirely possible Disney has greatly increased the total number of passes available in the program. It's also possible that a significant number of former Magic Key holders opted not to renew their passes for another year, leaving plenty of room for new passholders. Or some combination of the two. But for now, all but the top-tier pass is available.
The available Magic Key types and corresponding benefits are described below.

Let's keep it social
It looks like the Walt Disney Company has resumed posting to X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, at least for some of its official accounts. For others, including the official @Disneyland and @WaltDisneyWorld accounts, it appears Instagram and Facebook are still the preferred social media platforms. If you're used to getting your official Disney news from X, you'll want to check other channels as well.
No, I'm absolutely not mad that I missed Patrick Warburton at DCA and didn't get to hear him do Kronk. I mean, who do I need to know around here?

This and That
…Disney is testing new, turnstile-free entry gates at the Anaheim resort, with a pair of test gates installed at Disney California Adventure last week. This trial is to help pinpoint any issues before a widespread rollout begins later this year. The gates are similar to those already in use at Disneyland Paris, and can scan printed and digital admission media, as well as read MagicBand+ devices. Guests who do not already have a photo on file will take a picture before entry, and facial recognition technology is used for returning guests.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of October 11, 2023.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

SoCal Resident Ticket Offer
The Southern California Resident Ticket offers residents admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure up to three weekdays between January 2 and June 2, 2024 for $225, or up to any three days between January 2 and June 2, 2024 for $275.
You can use every day of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit different parks on different days, but you can't use it to enter both parks on the same day. For an additional $70, you can upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day.
You can also add Disney Genie+ service for an additional $90 for the three days when purchased in advance. Remember that you can also upgrade to Disney Genie+ after you enter the theme park (subject to availability) and pay the then-current daily fee. We recommend going with the latter option for your first experience with Disney Genie+, just to make sure the service provides a value for you. If you love it, you can always add the Genie+ to your remaining days.
Tickets are available through the Disneyland website, or through MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.
There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means that you can use the first admission on January 2 and wait until June 2 to use the remaining admission. However, remember that you must make a theme park reservation for each day that you want to use the ticket. Disney also warns that ticket sales may be paused or ended at any time, so it's probably best to purchase early so you're ready to make reservations as soon as they open for your desired travel dates. Reservations can now be made up to 180 days in advance, which as of press time includes the entire duration of this offer.
Disney states that proof of residency is required for purchase and admission, and each resident can purchase up to five tickets per day.

All tickets and options are non-transferable and must be used by December 13, 2024.
This offer can only be purchased at a participating US military base ticket office.
2024 Hotel discounts
Military discounts are valid for stays most nights from January 2 through December 13, 2024. You can book now through December 10, 2024, and travel must be completed by December 14, 2024.
Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (833) 618-0536 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30% to 40% off, based on room category. Concierge rooms, Signature or Premium suites, or 2-or 3-Bedroom Villas are excluded from the offer, and this offer can not be combined with any other discount.
