Spring Break season begins
If you are among those wondering just how much more crowded Disneyland can get, you'll have your chance to find out starting this week as spring break season officially begins. Disney's seasonal pricing calendar lists the period between March 24 through April 16 as peak season, among the busiest days of the year.
While early spring break crowds are already having an impact on wait times, the largest crowds are expected next month. Southern California annual passports are blocked out April 7–16, and the Southern California Resident discount ticket is blocked April 9–23, 2017. That's a pretty good indication of when Disney expects to see the heaviest spring break traffic.
Of course, spring break isn't the only thing driving traffic to the Disneyland Resort. The 2017 Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival runs through Sunday, April 16, drawing foodies from near and far to sample the offerings at DCA.
The next Value season day is April 24, after which attendance should be a bit lower, until Memorial Day weekend heralds the start of summer.
Tasting notes
As the 2017 Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival enters its second full week, there are a few notes to share. The Tasting Passport has arrived, anpick it up at the Festival Information booth in the Esplanade, and at the Festival Showplace inside Hollywood Land. The Tasting Passport is a pocket-sized collectible guide to the event, and includes a park map and detailed menu listings for each of the Festival Marketplace booths. There are blank spots on the passport to collect stamps from each Festival Marketplace you visit.

A nice feature of this guide is the legend identifying certain dishes as gluten-free, vegetarian, or child-friendly. We noted last week that Disney did not have a portable guide for visitors with dietary restrictions or food allergies, though that information is available on a laminated guide at each cash register. While the Tasting Passport does not include information about egg, dairy, tree nut, soy or shellfish allergens, it is still a handy tool for vegetarians and people trying to avoid gluten.

This upcoming weekend is the largest Artist Showcase event of the 2017 Food & Wine Festival. Seven popular Disney artists will be on hand to share their latest creations and sign purchases. The event is Saturday and Sunday from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the Off the Page store in Hollywood Land.

New Disney Junior Dance Party show debuts in May
We shared last month that the Disney Junior – Live on Stage! show performed in Disney California Adventure is slated to close on April 9. With the animated “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse” series replaced by the new “Mickey and the Roadster Racers” show, we expected that Disney would again revamp the Live on Stage show to reflect the current broadcast lineup.
However, the announcement by Shawn Slater, Senior Communications Manager, Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Entertainment, makes it clear that this isn't just another update of the Disney Junior show that has run under different names since 2003. The new Disney Junior Dance Party is described as a “high-energy, live show experience” that features “live appearances from some of your favorite characters.”
This sounds like a departure from the familiar puppet-based show, and we're definitely curious to see how Mickey and friends in their “Roadster Racers” personae will be presented alongside Kion and friends from The Lion Guard, Doc and pals from Doc McStuffins, and Sophia and her royal entourage from Sophia the First. Doc and Sophia already appear as walk-around characters in Disney California Adventure, but we have yet to meet any from The Lion Guard in person.
Disney Junior – Live on Stage! debuted in 2003 as Playhouse Disney – Live on Stage, and featured segments based on the then-current Playhouse Disney line-up of “Rolie Polie Olie,” “Stanley” and “Bear in the Big Blue House.” When the Playhouse Disney channel changed names to Disney Junior in 2011, the Live on Stage! show followed suit, and introduced a “Jake and the Never Land Pirates” segment. The departing version of Disney Junior – Live on Stage! features Jake and friends, along with the “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse,” “Sophia the First,” and “Doc McStuffins” segments.
50 years of Salty Old Pirates
Disneyland commemorated the 50th anniversary of the iconic Pirates of the Caribbean attraction last weekend with a three-day celebration in New Orleans Square featuring special food offerings, live entertainment and—of course—collectible merchandise and souvenirs. The celebration was not announced until last Monday afternoon, but it was enough warning for die-hard Pirates fans to come visit the freshly refurbished attraction, take photos at special locations set up for the day, and snack on “gold-dusted” lemon-flavored churros.

Construction Land
We shared last week photos of two AT-AT figures under construction in Star Wars Land at the Disneyland Resort. On Thursday, the Disney Parks Blog confirmed our report, sharing another construction photo from the area, and a short video which added computer animation to the existing steel frames.

New props are displayed around Tom Sawyer Island, and it appears there are both a new raft dock and a new short pier that could provide access to the island, either during daytime operations or for the Fantasmic show.
With the new trees in place along the berm around the Rivers of America, the view of the Mickey and Friends parking structure is once more almost completely obscured from inside Disneyland.

…We now know that the Matterhorn Bobsleds will reopen on April 28 following refurbishment.
…Fastpass tickets for the World of Color show in Disney California Adventure are now distributed from portable Fastpass carts currently located near the Little Mermaid attraction.

…Disney has added temporary directional signs to the bag check complex outside the Mickey and Friends parking structure. These new banners direct visitors to the checkpoints which lead to the tram loading area, or to the walkway to the theme parks via Downtown Disney. The new bag check complex opened last year with nothing in the way of signage, and visitors are often confused about where they are supposed to go after they get off the escalator.

…We mentioned last week that pineapple Dole Whip-flavored cotton candy is available at Disney California Adventure. The treat is available from the frozen novelty vending carts around DCA, but cast members say it sells out faster than they can restock.

- Grizzly River Run – closed through March 21 for refurbishment.
- Disney Junior – Live on Stage! closes for update on April 9.
- Corn Dog Castle – closed April 17 for refurbishment. Reopening date not available, but after April 23.
Disneyland Resort
- House of Blues Anaheim – closed. The 23,000-square-foot restaurant and concert venue has been demolished. A new Splitsville Lanes is scheduled to open on the site in late 2017.
Disneyland Resort Hotels
- Grand Californian Hotel Pools – closed through spring 2017. All three of the pools at the hotel will be closed for refurbishment, including the Redwood Pool and water slide, the Fountain Pool, and the Mariposa Pool. The cabanas will also close during this time. During the refurbishment, which is expected to last at least through March, people staying at the Grand Californian Hotel can use the pool facilities at the Disneyland Hotel or Paradise Pier Hotel.
- Pinocchio's Workshop – closed. No reopening date available.

- Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival – Through April 16. Tickets for the premium events are now on sale.
- Dapper Day Spring Outing to Disneyland (unofficial event) – Sunday, April 23. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
- 2017 Grad Nites – May 5, 6, 10, 17, 19, 20, 24, 30, and 31; June 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 10, 14, 16, and 17.
- 2017 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 11–14. This event happens over Mother's Day weekend. Registration is still open for some events via the runDisney website.
- D23 Expo – July 14–16. Tickets are now on sale through the official D23 website.
- Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – August 31 through September 3. This event adds to the Labor Day weekend crowds. Registration is still open for some events via the runDisney website.
- Gay Days at Disneyland (unofficial event) – October 6–8. More information on the event website.
- Dapper Day Fall Outing to Disneyland (unofficial event) – Sunday, November 5. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
- Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend – November 9–12. This event adds to the Veteran's Day weekend crowds. Registration is still open for some events via the runDisney website.
2018
- Star Wars – The Light Side Half Marathon Weekend – January 11–14, 2018. Registration has been delayed, and will open at a later, unspecified date.
School Holidays
Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other school holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2017
- Cesar Chavez Day – Friday, March 31. Many locals schools are closed.
- Spring Break – April 2–29. The four-week period during which most local schools will observe a one-week spring holiday. Based on the blockout dates of the Southern California discount tickets, Disney expects the largest crowds April 9–23.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 19–20. Expect large attendance levels October 19–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- Nevada Day – October 28. Nevada schools will be closed on Friday, October 28 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Three Day Tickets |
The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Military |
2017 Military Salute Offer Disney released details of its 2017 Military Salute offer for Disneyland and Walt Disney World last October, and the tickets are valid January 1 through April 8 and April 24 through December 19, 2017. At the time we first shared details of the offer, we did not know about (or Disney had not announced) a special PhotoPass promotion also available to military personnel. Through December 19, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel who are eligible for the Military Salute offer can also purchase the Disney PhotoPass Collection for $49, a discount of 50% over the usual $99 price. The Disney PhotoPass Collection includes digital downloads of all available PhotoPass photos linked to your account, a voucher for a dining print package and a Disneyland Resort Gallery Disc with 350 high-resolution professional photos from around Disneyland Resort. Southern California CityPASS |
Southern California CityPASS ($346/$314) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2017. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $42/$34. This upgraded pass is only available for purchase directly from the CityPASS website. You can also upgrade your CityPASS to add more days at participating locations:

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco. Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – These package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants.
