First bite of the Food and Wine Festival

One of the most popular events at Disney California Adventure opened last Friday, following two days of “taste-and-adjust” previews. The 2018 Disney California Food and Wine Festival is back for a third year in this new expanded format, bringing 14 Festival Marketplace booths to the park, and almost 40 dishes for festival-goers to sample.
Last Friday, we published the first of our weekly guides to the festival that provided the full menu and pricing for food and beverage offerings, as well as program information for opening weekend. Look for another guide this Friday, with some reviews and suggestions from MousePlanet contributing writer Todd Pickering, who sampled many of the dishes last week.
For those making their way to the festival before Friday, here's a quick look at changes from prior events.
The Palisades Stage in Paradise Park is the setting for both the culinary demonstrations and some live musical performances. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
For 2018, nearly all of the demonstrations and seminars are held outdoors, which posed a particular challenge as a storm blew through Southern California during opening weekend. Several events had to be cancelled due to weather, and the grey skies may have put a damper on overall event attendance.

The live culinary demonstrations are presented from the Palisades Stage in Paradise Park, which is also the setting for some of the live musical acts that perform during the show. This standing-room-only location provides more visibility for the speaker, but comes with little to no seating area, and no samples of the dishes being created unless you spring for the $30 Culinary VIP package. This package also gives you access to a meet-and-greet with the chef after the presentation.

The Wine, Beer and Spirit seminars are held on the Sonoma Terrace at the Golden Vine Winery, which just opened following an expansion and minor refurbishment. The planters in front of the restaurant were removed and replaced with added seating, with some tables potentially offering an excellent view of the parade route (which surely means a new added-cost dessert package for the Paint the Night parade.)

The family-friend lifestyle seminars are hosted each Friday through Sunday on the Backlot Stage in Hollywood Land, a venue that offers a bit more seating and protection from the elements. Hollywood Land also houses the Junior Chef program and the AP Corner.
The food focus for the 2018 event is “California local,” but Disney executive chef John State has also incorporated larger food trends into his offerings. There are three new vegan offerings for 2018, along with another trio of vegetarian dishes. Of these, two use newly developed meat substitutes, and State hints that these ingredients might find a more permanent home on menus around the Disneyland Resort.

Annual passholders can again purchase the “Sip and Savor Pass” for $45. The passport allows you to choose eight food and beverage items from 12 participating Festival Marketplace booths. See Friday's Festival Guide for a detailed analysis of this offering, and our opinion on whether it's a good deal.
Finally, there is a new, free souvenir for the 2018 event: a paper chef hat intended for younger visitors—but sure to be coveted by most Mickey fans. All around the hat are spots where you can collect stamps from the various Festival Marketplace booths as you dine, providing a wearable passport of your tasting adventure. Look for yours as you enter Disney California Adventure, while supplies last.

Join Team MousePlanet for the 2018 CHOC Walk in the Park
Registration is now officially open for the 2018 CHOC Walk in the Park, to be held Sunday, August 26 at the Disneyland Resort.
Team MousePlanet will return for our 11th consecutive walk to support Children's Hospital Orange County. Thanks to the efforts and generosity of our readers, Team MousePlanet has raised over $70,000 for CHOC since 2008. We invite MousePlanet readers, friends, and family members to join our team for the event.
When you register for the event, you can opt to register as a Fundraising Bear or a Busy Bear:
- Early Bird Registration – walkers pay nothing at the time of registration, but must raise a minimum of $85 by Monday, August 13 to participate.
- Late Registration – walkers pay a fee of $95 at the time of registration to secure their place at the walk.
Why Join Team MousePlanet?
COMMUNITY! Walking with Team MousePlanet is a great way to spend a morning with MousePlanet staff and readers, all while raising money for a great cause. Stay after the walk and enjoy Disneyland with your fellow Disney fans.
CONVENIENCE! If you register during Early Bird registration and meet your fundraising goal, Team MousePlanet will handle check-in for you. No need to drive to Orange the week before the walk to collect your wristband and T-shirt. You need only meet us in Downtown Disney the morning of the walk to collect your goodies, then head right into Disneyland to start the walk.
If you prefer to have your shirt and wristband before the walk (some people like to personalize them), there is an option to have those items shipped to you.
The deadline to join Team MousePlanet and meet the $85 fundraising requirement in order for us to handle check-in for walkers is Monday, August 13. We still welcome those who register after this date, but they must handle their own check-in.
In addition to helping support an outstanding local charity, one of the benefits of participating in the CHOC Walk is the opportunity to purchase specially priced Disneyland tickets to use in the weeks after the walk. CHOC has not yet announced the dates or details this promotion for 2018; we will share details as soon as we know them.
Are you ready to CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanet? It's easy to sign up—just visit our team page.
Security and tram changes for Mickey and Friends
With Disney breaking ground on the new Cleo parking structure next to the Mickey and Friends structure, visitors will notice a major change in operations the next time they park in the structure. Last week, Disney relocated the security checkpoint and tram loading area to the ground floor of the Mickey and Friends structure. Visitors still park as usual and take an escalator or two to the ground floor, then re-enter the structure to pass through security and board a tram.
This change has one immediate benefit for guests: visitors are protected from sun and weather while waiting to pass bag check and board the tram. Some have complained, however, that the new arrangement is too noisy.
Visitors can still walk from the parking structure to Downtown Disney, though the walkway has been slightly rerouted due to the change in tram route.
Egg-stravaganza 2018
With the Walt Disney World version launching almost a month ago, it looked as if Disneyland might not host the annual Egg-stravaganza hunt this year. Disney announced that the event is back for 2018, March 16 through April 1.
Originally introduced in 2013 as a Limited Time Magic promotion, the Egg-stravaganza promotion invites egg-hunters to first purchase a special map, which reveals the location of large decorated “eggs” hidden around the Disneyland Resort. There are a dozen oversized eggs each in Disneyland, Disney California Adventure and in Downtown Disney, with a different map available for each of the three hunts.
Each map comes with a sheet of stickers, which egg-hunters can place on corresponding spots on the map as they find each design. Once the hunt is over, participants return their map to a designated location to receive a “surprise,” a smaller plastic replica of one of the Disney character eggs.
The maps are $5.99 each, plus tax, and no discounts apply. Purchase maps and redeem your prize at the following locations:
- Disney California Adventure – at Elias & Co.
- Disneyland – at Disney Showcase
- Downtown Disney – at the World of Disney Store
Pixar Fest
The Festival Marketplaces of Disney's California Food and Wine Festival will barely have closed when Pixar Fest debuts at the Disneyland Resort on April 13. Orange County residents heard the booms as Disneyland tested the new “Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular” fireworks last week, but at this time, Disney has not released show times for the first public performances.
The Pixar Play Parade will also debut at Disneyland on April 13, with performance times still to be announced.
MousePlanet reader Emannuel Elefante (@DL05EE) noted that the Paint the Night parade will have two nightly performances once it debuts on April 13, at 8:45 and 10:45 p.m.
It appears that the World of Color will close for refurbishment on April 13. No end date is available at this time.
This and that…
…Splash Mountain is scheduled to reopen on Saturday, April 14.
…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We'll also include a fun bonus, such as an Eye Spy or a trivia question. To subscribe to our free newsletter, just enter your e-mail in the box below.

Resort Events
Check here to see if a large convention, competition, or park event might fall during your next trip to the Disneyland Resort. If you know of any in-park events, official or unofficial, that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
- Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival – March 2 through April 12.
- Pixar Fest begins – April 13. Debut of the new “Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular” fireworks show, as well as the first performances of the Paint the Night parade in Disney California Adventure, and Pixar Play Parade in Disneyland.
- Dapper Day Spring Outing to Disneyland (unofficial event) – Sunday, April 22. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
- MouseAdventure (unofficial event) – Sunday, April 29, 2018. More information on the event website.
- 2018 Grad Nites: May 4, 5, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 22, 23, 29 and 30; June 1, 2, 5, 6, 8 and 9.
- CHOC Walk – Sunday, August 26. Registration is now open. We invite MousePlanet readers, friends, and family members to join our team for the event.
- Moonlight Magic after-hours event for Disney Vacation Club members – Thursday, November 15. Reservations open October 4.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Non-Disney Resort Events

Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 11, 2018.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Discounts for:
Everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you pre-purchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Southern California residents |
Southern California residents can visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks multiple days before May 24, 2018 for as little as $159 with the 2018 So Cal Resident ticket. The 2-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 24. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $159 for ages 3 and up, a discount of 20% compared to box office prices and a $10 increase from the 2017 promotion. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $45, a savings of up to $40 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket. If you want an extra day to visit the parks, there is also a 3-Day 1-Park per Day option ($199) and a 3-Day Park Hopper ticket ($244) in the promotion. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them by calling (714) 781-4636. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 21, 2018. Tickets expire May 24, 2018, and are blocked out March 23 through April 8, 2018. |
