New parade and fireworks viewing policy takes effect at Disneyland Resort
The Disneyland Resort last week rolled out a new guest control policy designed to keep the sidewalks of Main Street clear during more of the day, but it seems that cast members yet to begin aggressively enforcing it.

Under the new policy—to have taken effect last week—visitors can no longer reserve space on Main Street to watch parades or fireworks before cast members install the ropes to designate the boundaries of the viewing areas. This change follows a similar policy change made for the Fantasmic show, before Disneyland implemented Fastpass for that show (and before the show's hiatus due to the Star Wars Land construction).
The new policy targets visitors who claim a space on the sidewalks of Main Street hours before the parade begins, sometimes using blankets or tarps to reserve space for large parties who do not wait with them. Disney now asks that visitors wait until the viewing areas are open to take a seat along the parade route, and not to save spots for other people.
A Disneyland spokesperson confirmed the policy change, and tells MousePlanet that the new rules are designed to allow park visitors to enjoy Main Street during the daytime, and reduce crowding on the street before parades. Visitors can still sit on the curb to enjoy a snack or take a short break, but if it becomes clear that they are waiting for a parade, they will be asked to come back with the viewing areas open. Depending on the day and location along the parade route, viewing areas become open anywhere from 35 to 90 minutes before the first parade of the evening.
Since Disneyland does not remove the ropes between parades when there are two performances in an evening, guests can claim a spot for the second parade as soon as the first parade has cleared the route. Even after the viewing areas open, visitors are asked not to use blankets, towels or bags to mark their space, nor save space for other people who are not present.
MousePlanet readers who visited Disneyland since the new policy was to have taken effect have reported wildly varying levels of enforcement. Chris Henry visited on March 2, and said via Facebook, “It was nice. We found a good spot in the hub about 60 minutes before. That would've been grabbed three hours before in the old days.” Another reader visited on March 5 and said via email that there were lots of people camped out on Main Street long before the ropes were put in place, and cast members were making no effort to clear them out. That is consistent with a tweet by user Imaginat1on, who also visited March 5:

We aren't certain how the park will manage the viewing areas once Mickey's Soundsational Parade returns on March 25. The entertainment schedule shows that parade will run at 4:30 p.m., with the first Main Street Electrical Parade stepping off at 8:30 p.m. We suspect Disney will remove the viewing area set up after the Soundsational Parade ends (around 5:15 p.m.), and then reset the areas around 7:00 for the Electrical Parade.
The good news for most guests is that they may experience a much shorter wait for the nighttime parade and fireworks, but the downside is a potential crush on Main Street when the viewing areas open.
Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival begins Friday
The 2017 Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival begins this Friday, and the food booths and support structures are already in place throughout most of the park. Each booth is topped with a new sign with a unique graphic highlighting the theme of the booth.

Looking at the schedule for the event, it appears Disney is treating the Food & Wine Festival as another opportunity to bring “festival entretainment” to Disney California Adventure. The daily schedule includes Live Festival Music at Paradise Park, and sets by the Jammin' Chefs, (who we suspect are the Trash Can Trio/Green Army Men group in a new costume).
The 2017 event will also feature a daily Junior Chef offering in Paradise Park, near the Golden Zephyr. The Junior Chef program gives children ages 3 to 11 the opportunity to help “bake” a sweet treat, with help from Goofy and some Disney chefs. Long-time Disney fans may remember a similar program offered at Disneyland, and Disney tours the program around for community events.

The free offering is scheduled three times per day, so check the event schedule for the day you want to visit. Every participant receives a packaged baked treat to enjoy after the activity.
Advance registration opens Thursday for 2018 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend events
Early registration opens at 9 a.m. Pacific time this Thursday, March 9 for 2018 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend events. The race weekend is scheduled for January 11–14, 2018 at the Disneyland Resort. Early registration is open to Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders, and also to members of the Disney Vacation Club. General registration opens next Tuesday, March 14 at 9:00 a.m. (Pacific)
Registration for the 2018 races opens a full three months earlier than for the 2017 event, and it's unknown what effect the earlier commitment opportunity will have on the registration pace. It's been over a month since registration opened for the 2017 Super Heroes Half Marathon weekend, and all divisions are open, with the exception of the runDisney Kids Races. Participants note the difficulty in committing to a race nine months in advance, and also complain about being required to pay the registration fees so far in advance.
Still, the Star Wars event has proven to be one of the most popular at the Disneyland Resort, and some people—especially those hoping to retain their legacy status—will want to register as early as possible to confirm their spot.
New this year is a Light Side Lounge, a “VIP experience.” Disney says, “This experience will provide guests with a personalized race check-in process, as well as access to exclusive shopping, dining and entertainment offerings.” Details and pricing are not yet available on the runDisney website.
Pricing for all race events remain unchanged from 2016, and there is no Pasta in the Park party again in 2017.
Here are tips provided by runDisney to help runners prepare to register quickly:
- Create an active.com profile prior to registration opening.
- Be ready to register at noon ET (9 a.m. Pacific time). Follow rundisney.com and the runDisney social media channels for the registration link.
- Once you're in the queue, you have 15 minutes to complete the registration process. After 15 minutes, your spot is no longer guaranteed.
- If you receive an “on hold” message, this means the queue is currently full. Continue to check back.
- Have everyone in your party register only themselves for a faster registration process.
- Look to travel providers and charity groups for additional registration opportunities.
If you are a Walt Disney World or Disneyland Resort annual passholder, our advice is to use the links from those pages to register for the event. While Disney Vacation Club members also have access to early registration, the DVC website is notorious for not posting the links until the registration is almost full. Proof of time for the half marathon event can be provided when you register, but must be provided by October 10, 2017 to avoid being placed in the last corral for the half marathon start.

- House of Blues Anaheim – closed. The 23,000-square-foot restaurant and concert venue has been demolished. A new Splitsville Lanes is scheduled to open on the site in late 2017.
Disneyland Resort Hotels

Grand Californian Hotel Pools – closed through spring 2017. All three of the pools at the hotel will be closed for refurbishment, including the Redwood Pool and water slide, the Fountain Pool, and the Mariposa Pool. The cabanas will also close during this time. During the refurbishment, which is expected to last at least through March, people staying at the Grand Californian Hotel can use the pool facilities at the Disneyland Hotel or Paradise Pier Hotel.

- 2017 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 11–14. This event happens over Mother's Day weekend. Registration is still open for some events via the runDisney website.

- Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – August 31 through September 3. This event adds to the Labor Day weekend crowds. Registration is still open for some events via the runDisney website.

- Star Wars – The Light Side Half Marathon Weekend – January 11–14, 2018. Early registration opens March 7, 2017. General registration opens March 14, 2017 via the runDisney website. Proof of Time must be provided by October 10, 2017.
School Holidays
Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other school holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2017
- Cesar Chavez Day – Friday, March 31. Many locals schools are closed.
- Spring Break – April 2–29. The four-week period during which most local schools will observe a one-week spring holiday. Based on the blockout dates of the Southern California discount tickets, Disney expects the largest crowds April 9–23.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 19–20. Expect large attendance levels October 19–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- Nevada Day – October 28. Nevada schools will be closed on Friday, October 28 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Three Day Tickets |
The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. 2017 Military Salute Offer Disney released details of its 2017 Military Salute offer for Disneyland and Walt Disney World last October, and the tickets are valid January 1 through April 8 and April 24 through December 19, 2017. At the time we first shared details of the offer, we did not know about (or Disney had not announced) a special PhotoPass promotion also available to military personnel. Through December 19, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel who are eligible for the Military Salute offer can also purchase the Disney PhotoPass Collection for $49, a discount of 50% over the usual $99 price. The Disney PhotoPass Collection includes digital downloads of all available PhotoPass photos linked to your account, a voucher for a dining print package and a Disneyland Resort Gallery Disc with 350 high-resolution professional photos from around Disneyland Resort. Southern California CityPASS ($346/$314) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2017. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – These package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants.
