Matterhorn reopens with new Fastpass option
Disneyland's Matterhorn has reopened following a lengthy refurbishment, and with it, a new way to manage the line. During the refurbishment, Disney slightly modified the attraction queue, and added Fastpass service to the ride.
The permanent Fastpass dispensers were not ready to go when the ride reopened last week, so until construction wraps up, Disney is using mobile Fastpass machines. All riders now get in line starting at the chalet, before being directed into the lines for the left or right track. Before this remodel, riders would join the queue on either the Tomorrowland or Fantasyland side of the mountain, entering the chalet just before boarding the coaster.
Disney also installed the portals that will eventually be used to verify Fastpass tickets when the new MaxPass service rolls out later this year, but those have not yet been put into use.
Tomorrowland Skyline Lounge
Disneyland will debut a new premium experience starting Memorial Day weekend. The Tomorrowland Skyline Lounge offers visitors a “new perspective” high above Tomorrowland, with the potential to view the nightly fireworks show. Disney is carefully not marketing this as a fireworks dessert party like those offered all around Walt Disney World, probably because Disneyland's fireworks are much more prone than the Florida spectaculars to weather-related cancellation.
When offered, the Tomorrowland Skyline Lounge is open for two hours, from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. Visitors can come and go as they please. Attendees receive a prepackaged snack container with fruit, cheese and sweets, plus a choice of hot or cold non-alcoholic beverage.
Disney has not disclosed the exact location of the Lounge. It says there is “ample seating,” although the venue does not accommodate strollers. Check-in is at the fruit cart in Tomorrowland, which is at the base of the Observatron tower. Based on this, we assume the Lounge is located in the area previously used as the loading area for the Rocket Rods attraction.
The Tomorrowland Skyline Lounge Experience is $45 per person ages 3 and up, tax included. There is no charge for children age 2 and under, but they do not receive the snack. Call (714) 781-3463 to reserve, or book online via the Disneyland website.
Grad Nite season kicks off this week
The first Grad Nite of the 2017 season is this Friday, May 5. If you're planning a visit during this period, be sure to consult the schedule of Grad Nite dates so you can plan appropriately. For 2017, Grad Nite is held on May 5, 6, 10, 17, 19, 20, 24, 30, and 31; June 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 10, 14, 16, and 17.
For 2017, the event includes park-hopper access to both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disney California Adventure from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. after that park closes to “day guests.”
Schools can choose to arrive whenever they wish during their Grad Nite event. Some arrive right at park opening to maximize their time, while others arrive later due to travel time or other activities. Based on reports since the event switched to this format in 2014, the parks grow increasingly crowded as the day goes on and more students arrive. Grad Nites are often a good excuse to leave the theme parks early to take in a movie and a nice dinner in Downtown Disney.
Beware: Formal Grad Nites are not the only times that the Disneyland Resort is crowded with student groups. The last weeks of school are popular times for class trips, something that Disney actively encourages through special pricing and activities for school groups. Those visits won't appear on any calendar, but are a fact of Disney life during this season.
With so many schools on year-round calendars now, you should consider the period between March and mid-June as one big, hazy spring-break-into-graduation season. So while the Grad Nite calendar can give you an idea of when the most high school seniors will be on property, there is no way to know when a school district from Central California is sending its ninth graders for their own promotion celebration.
Johnny Depp surprises riders on Pirates of the Caribbean; The Rock to redo Jungle Cruise
Continuing a string of surprise in-park appearances by celebrities promoting their latest Disney projects, Johnny Depp gave riders on Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean a once-in-a-lifetime experience last week when he dressed in character and briefly appeared inside the attraction's auction scene. The appearance was shared on social media by dozens of quick-acting riders who got their phones working in time to capture the moment.
In March, actors Dan Stevens and Josh Gad made separate appearances in Disney parks to promote the release of Beauty and the Beast. Stevens surprised fans who turned out for a sneak preview of the film at Disney California Adventure, and Gad dropped in during an event at the Be Our Guest restaurant in Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom.
If there was any doubt that Depp's Disneyland visit was a promotion for the latest Pirates film, the Disney Parks Blog has now posted an official video of the encounter, and plenty of mentions of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
Earlier this month, actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson took control of a Jungle Cruise book at the Magic Kingdom, a trip that most assumed was to research his role in an upcoming film. Based on a post the actor made on Instragram this weekend, it's clear his involvement goes waoaty beyond the silver screen. Johnson posted that he will “partner with Disney's brilliant Imagineers to help re-engineer and re-design the #JungleCruise ride in all the Disney theme parks around the world.”
Come cheer with Team MousePlanet
Team MousePlanet is making plans for our Tinker Bell Half Marathon cheer station, and we're looking for volunteers. The race is on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 14.
We will offer our popular Red Vines (a.k.a. Free Candy From Strangers) for runners and walkers, plus support and motivation for as long our voices hold out. If you find yourself looking for something fun and unusual to do at 6:00 a.m. on Mother's Day morning, I would love to have your help, and the 12,000-plus race participants will certainly appreciate your support.
We will set up on the corner of Center Street Promenade and Lemon in Anaheim, just before mile marker 8 on the course. With lots of parking options and the ability to avoid most race-related road closures, this is a great location.
Volunteers are needed starting at 6:00 a.m. There is plenty of parking in the Vons shopping center at Harbor and Lincoln, with a walkway leading onto Lemon. There's a Starbucks in that center, so you can get coffee to keep you going. We stay in place until the sweep has passed our location, which is usually around 8 a.m., so that we can cheer on every last runner, walker and (by that point) limper and crawler. If you need to leave earlier to meet a runner at the finish line, it's not hard to get back to the Mickey and Friends structure from that location—just go across Lincoln and down Manchester.
MousePlanet provides all supplies for the cheer sation, including pop-up tent, Red Vines and the Team MousePlanet banner. All you need to bring is yourself, a great attitude, and whatever supplies you want—a chair, sunblock, snacks and drinks. Noise makers of any type are a great ideas—you will be sore from clapping and hoarse from yelling very quickly! We also encourage volunteers to bring fun signs.

…Disney has filed a permit for a “Fantasmic Aladdin Magic Carpet Lift Access Panel.” We've heard chatter that Aladdin would be one of the additions to the new version of Fantasmic, but it appears from this permit that the show will have a whole new special effect as well.
…Indiana Jones Adventure closes Monday, May 1 for refurbishment.The ride is slated to reopen on May 26.
…The Orange County Register reports that the Anabella Hotel is closing to make way for new luxury hotel project. The Anabella Hotel is located on West Katella across from Disney California Adventure, and ajacent to the Anaheim Convention Center. The property will close sometime in August. The Wincome Group has announced plans to build a 600-room four-diamond hotel on the site, slated to open in 2020.

- Grand Californian Hotel Pools – closed through spring 2017. All three of the pools at the hotel will be closed for refurbishment, including the Redwood Pool and water slide, the Fountain Pool, and the Mariposa Pool. The cabanas will also close during this time. During the refurbishment, which is expected to last at least through March, people staying at the Grand Californian Hotel can use the pool facilities at the Disneyland Hotel or Paradise Pier Hotel.
- Pinocchio's Workshop – closed. No reopening date available.

2018
- Star Wars – The Light Side Half Marathon Weekend – January 11–14, 2018. Registration has been delayed, and will open at a later, unspecified date.
School Holidays
Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other school holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2017
- Spring Break – Through April 29. The four-week period during which most local schools will observe a one-week spring holiday. Based on the blockout dates of the Southern California discount tickets, Disney expects the largest crowds April 9–23.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 19–20. Expect large attendance levels October 19–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- Nevada Day – October 28. Nevada schools will be closed on Friday, October 28 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Three Day Tickets |
The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. 2017 Military Salute Offer Disney released details of its 2017 Military Salute offer for Disneyland and Walt Disney World last October, and the tickets are valid January 1 through April 8 and April 24 through December 19, 2017. At the time we first shared details of the offer, we did not know about (or Disney had not announced) a special PhotoPass promotion also available to military personnel. Through December 19, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel who are eligible for the Military Salute offer can also purchase the Disney PhotoPass Collection for $49, a discount of 50% over the usual $99 price. The Disney PhotoPass Collection includes digital downloads of all available PhotoPass photos linked to your account, a voucher for a dining print package and a Disneyland Resort Gallery Disc with 350 high-resolution professional photos from around Disneyland Resort. Southern California CityPASS |
Southern California CityPASS ($346/$314) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2017. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $42/$34. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. | Hotel and travel package offers |
Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco. Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – These package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants. Contact Disney Travel at (714) 520-5050, book online through the Disneyland website, or call your favorite travel agent to inquire about these packages. |

The Disneyland website does not list the blockout dates for the Costco-exclusive Disney California Adventure Park Fun Pass. The blockout dates are as follows:
