Disneyland Resort Update for May 15, 2023
News and Views
Note from the editor:
It's another slow news week for the Disneyland Resort, with no major headlines to report. That isn't to say that there wasn't some social media buzz this week, as New Orleans Square was temporarily evacuated due to what was reportedly a smoke alarm from an area kitchen. The same thing happened at Wine Country Trattoria in Disney California Adventure two weeks ago. We get messages about these incidents when they pop up on social media, but it's usually pretty routine. Nothing as spectacular as the Fantasmic fire, fortunately, and no injuries reported in either incident.
Speaking of Fantasmic, Disney really isn't, other than the message posted on the Disneyland website shortly after the April 22 fire. The portion of Tom Sawyer Island that serves as the Fantasmic stage is still blocked off from guest access, but there is no damage visible to the untrained eye. The show remains off of Disneyland's entertainment schedule through June 25, which is as far as that calendar was posted as of press time.
Another bit of social media silliness from this week prompted readers to ask if we'd heard anything about Disneyland's exclusive Club 33 “selling” reservations to non-members. The rumor came from a satirical website some describe as “The Onion of the Disney world,” but it seems many people missed the joke. However, if you and up to 11 friends are willing to pony up a combined $18,000, you can book a dinner party at the 21 Royal, also housed in Disneyland's New Orleans Square. This exclusive venue is located inside what was once the Dream Suite above Pirates of the Caribbean, and now offers what Disney advertises as a “one-of-a-kind and truly unforgettable epicurean experience.”
Expect bigger crowds as the SoCal Ticket offer comes to an end
Summer is just around the corner, and the Southern California Resident Ticket introduced in January is about to expire. This discounted ticket offers residents of Southern California and northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure up to three weekdays before May 25, 2023.
The Disneyland Monorail passes above the Submarine Lagoon in Tomorrowland. MousePlanet file photo.
You can use every day of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit different parks on different days, but you can't use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $219 for ages 3 and up, and is valid only Mondays through Fridays. For an additional $60, you can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day.
Weekends are not included, leaving people who already have the ticket just 9 (including today) days left to use any remaining days of the pass. As with past promotions, these last weeks of the promotion bring out large crowds looking to get the maximum value from the ticket. Regardless of what ticket you have, if you're visiting the parks this week expect to have extra company. Grad Nite season has also begun, with school groups making their end-of-year visits to the parks by day, and graduating seniors celebrating on select nights.
You can still purchase the Southern California Resident Ticket through the Disneyland website, or through MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today. Tickets must be purchased by May 23 to be able to use all three admissions.
GOP bill seeks to revoke Disney's no-fly zone
In 2003, Congress passed legislation creating a so-called no-fly zone above both the Disneyland Resort in California, and the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. The Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFR) prohibit aircraft (including drones) from flying less than 3000 feet above the theme parks for a radius of three nautical miles. The was made permanent in 2014, with exceptions only for law enforcement, Department of Defense, air ambulances—and aircraft operated by the Walt Disney Company. The reason for the Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) is listed as “Special Security Reasons.”
Last year, U.S. Congressman Troy E. Nehls (R) from Texas introduced the Airlines Independent of Restrictions Act (AIR) Act, which, if passed, would require Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to revoke the two TFRs relating to Disneyland and Walt Disney World, FDC 4/3634 and FDC 4/3635. In a statement at the time, Nehls said, “The federal government should not grant special privileges and pick favorites for powerful well-connected companies like Disney.”
H. R. 8042 was referred to the Subcommittee on Aviation after being introduced last year, but no further action was recorded. This week Rep. Nehls reintroduced the bill as H.R.3109. The bill was co-sponsored by a number of Republicans including Lauren Boebert, who said in a statement, “The FAA has no business granting a no-fly-zone over Disney parks. Universal Studios, Hershey Park, Six Flags, and other theme parks don’t have no-fly-zones over them, and it’s time for Disney to get the same treatment.”
Per Nehls and his co-sponsors, Disney wants to keep the TFRs in place simply to protect their theme parks and resorts from outside nuisances, like aerial advertising or helicopter tours above Disneyland.

As it happens, my Disney-loving husband happens to also be a licensed pilot, and I asked for his take on the matter. He noted that Southern California is considered one of the most complicated airspace to navigate, and having a TFR smack dab in the middle of Orange County adds to the complexity.
The Disney no-fly zone sits between two very busy commercial airports—John Wayne Airport to the south and Long Beach to the west—and also impacts operations out of Fullerton general aviation field and the Los Alamitos Reserve Air Base. In addition, there are also altitude restrictions in the larger area because of the Class B airspace around Los Angeles International Airport. My eyes may have started to glaze over as he really got into the CHOC Walk returns to the park
Save the date for the return of the CHOC Walk to the Disneyland Resort on Sunday, August 20. The 5K charity walk returns to the Disneyland Resort for the first time since 2019. 2023 marks the 33rd year of the event at the Disneyland Resort, with a course that takes participants through Disneyland, Disney California Adventure and Downtown Disney. The 2023 event has set a fundraising goal of $2.3 million, and hopes to attract as many as 400 teams. Visit the CHOC Walk website for more information and to register. Stay in the middle of the magic and save up to 15% on select rooms at the Hotels of the DISNEYLAND® Resort Hotels for travel March 12 – June 8, 2023. Experience the Disney California Adventure® Food & Wine Festival, Disney100 Celebration and so much more! Even greater savings are available to Magic Key holders and Disney Visa Card holders. As a Disneyland Resort Hotel guest, you’ll be able to enter Disneyland Park or Disney California Adventure Park 30 minutes prior to park opening with Early Entry Access. This means you’ll be able to enjoy your favorite attractions before the parks officially open every day of your stay. Theme park reservations are available now for this offer, so don’t wait to book! Book now at Get Away Today or call 1-855-GET-AWAY, and be sure to mention you saw them on MousePlanet. …There are three Grad Nites scheduled this week, on Wednesday May 17, Friday May 19, and Sunday May 21. …Both of the Disneyland After Dark: Pride Nite events are now sold out. The events are scheduled for June 13 and 15. If you already have tickets, event details are available on the Disneyland website. …The Inspire Key was still available as of press time, a month after Disney resumed sales of new Magic Key passes. The other three tiers are sold out. Magic Keys are available only from the Disneyland website. Attraction, restaurants, and stores that are closed for refurbishment are noted below. All other closures should be presumed to be due to COVID protocols, and are subject to change at any time without notice as the state of California issues new guidance. If you know of any in-park events, official or unofficial, that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail. 2023 2024 We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers! This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings. Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.A Word from our Sponsor
