Future Fantasmic
When Disneyland announced in April that the “limited-time” return engagement of the Main Street Electrical had been extended through August 20 “by popular demand,” many questioned if the extension was somehow related to a delays with the Fantasmic show. Fantasmic is currently on hiatus due to the work on the Rivers of America, and Disney has not given an estimate beyond “summer” for the show's return.
Disneyland added a bit of fuel to that fire this weekend when they released an annual passholder-exclusive Fantasmic shirt that reads, “I Was There May 13, 2017.” Via postings to social media, Disney maintains that the date refers only to the 25th anniversary of Fantasmic, which debuted in 1992, and not to any planned return of the show.
Still, it seems more likely that Fantasmic was expected to be back by its 25th anniversary than to believe Disney intentionally designed and ordered an “I Was There” shirt for a show that is still on hiatus. We'll probably never know the truth, and Disneyland has still not provided a more specific return date for the show. However, the company did release more information about the updated version of the show last week, including an image which shows a flying carpet in a new Aladdin scene. We shared a few weeks ago that Disney had filed for a construction permit for a new lift for this carpet.
As we reported last week, the Rivers of America was refilled. Disney has since begun running the Mark Twain around the new track.
Groot to join Guardians at DCA
West Coast Disney fans who were envious of the Baby Groot meet-and-greet at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World got some good news this weekend when Disney announced that grown-up Groot is joining Star-Lord and Gamora in the Summer of Heroes promotion at Disney California Adventure starting May 27.
Star-Lord, Groot and Gamora will star in an Awesome Dance Off show during the Summer of Heroes. Photo © Disney.
Groot will appear with Star-Lord and Gamora in the “Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Dance Off!” show in Hollywood Land, and will be available for photos after the show ends. No word if Groot speaks, but it seems to us that the same Disney magic that gives voice to Darth Vader and Kylo Ren in their respective meet-and-greets could easily handle Groot's limited vocabulary.
Date Night at Disneyland
Disney's Shawn Slater has confirmed that live music will return to the Tomorrowland Terrace stage for the 2017 summer season. The bands will perform Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights from May 26 through August 20.
The band line-up for the opening weekend was not available at press time. Bands will perform from 7:30 to 11:15 p.m.
The stink about Tink
According to runDisney, over 24,000 runners participated in the 2017 Tinker Bell Half Marathon events this past weekend—and based on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram posts, it seems many of them had something to say about the changes made to this event in its sixth year.

Runners and walkers have taken to social media to complain about everything from the lack of characters on the course for Friday's 5K, crowd control issues that caused the delay of the start of the half marathon Sunday morning, to gridlock that stranded drivers for hours in the Mickey and Friends parking structure after the race ended.

MousePlanet contributor Lorree Tachell will share her thoughts about the event in an upcoming article on MousePlanet. If you'd like to contribute your experiences, please drop her a note via email.

Despite any issues on the runDisney side, MousePlanet wants to extend an extra-special thanks to the volunteers who helped to prepare and staff the Team MousePlanet cheer station at mile 8 of the half-marathon courses. These readers got up before dawn on Mother's Day to hand out nearly 150 pounds of Red Vines candy, snap pictures for runners at our photo stops, and provide endless encouragement from the first runner to the very last walker.

Thank you to Theresa, Ken, Jenny, Steve, Richard, Steven, Millie, Caroline, “Nancy's Mom” and the woman whose name I didn't catch. If you'd like to join Team MousePlanet in cheering for an upcoming runDisney event in Anaheim, just let me know and I'll be happy to add you to the list.
Join Team MousePlanet for the 2017 CHOC Walk in the Park
Registration is now officially open for the 2017 CHOC Walk in the Park, to be held Sunday, August 27, 2017 at the Disneyland Resort.
Thanks to the efforts and generosity of MousePlanet.com readers, staff and contributors, Team MousePlanet has raised over $62,000 for CHOC Children's since 2008. We invite all MousePlanet readers, friends, and family to join us at the 2017 walk, as we celebrate a decade of giving.
The minimum fundraising commitment for all walkers (ages 3 and up) is $85. When you register for the event, you can opt to register as a Fundraising Bear or a Busy Bear:
- Fundraising Bears pay nothing at the time of registration, but must raise a minimum of $85 before the event to participate.
- Busy Bears pay a fee of $95 at the time of registration to secure their place at the walk. CHOC will mail the event T-shirt and wristband before the walk.
Why Join Team MousePlanet?
COMMUNITY! Walking with Team MousePlanet is a great way to spend a morning with MousePlanet staff and readers, all while raising money for a great cause. Stay after the walk and enjoy Disneyland with your fellow Disney fans.
CONVENIENCE! If you register as a Fundraising Bear, Team MousePlanet will handle check-in for you. No need to drive to Orange the week before the walk to collect your wristband and T-shirt. You need only meet us in Downtown Disney the morning of the walk to collect your goodies, then head right into Disneyland to start the walk.
If you prefer to have your shirt and wristband before the walk (some people like to personalize them), register as a Busy Bear and those items will be shipped to you.
The deadline to join Team MousePlanet and meet the $85 fundraising requirement in order for us to handle check-in for walkers is Friday, August 18. We still welcome those who register after this date, but they must handle their own check-in.
Are you ready to CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanet? It's easy to sign up – just visit the CHOC Walk website. You can opt to join Team MousePlanet during the registration process.
If you have any questions about the event, join the discussion on our MousePad forum.
This and that…
…As we predicted last week, the $150 Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout Galactic Premier Party is sold out. Attendees will be among the first to experience the new attraction on May 26, one day before it opens to the general public.
…The “Road to the Races” nationwide tour promoting the upcoming release of Cars 3 will make a stop at Downtown Disney June 12 and 13, 2017. No additional details are available at this time, but we'll post as update as more information is available.
…There are just 9 days left to take advantage of the spring So Cal Resident offer. The promotion offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017.
…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We'll also include a fun bonus, such as an Eye Spy or a trivia question. To subscribe to our free newsletter, just enter your e-mail in the box below.

Resort Events

School Holidays
Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other school holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2017
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 19–20. Expect large attendance levels October 19–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- Nevada Day – October 28. Nevada schools will be closed on Friday, October 28 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Non-Disney Resort Events
Notable events at parks and attractions around Southern California. If you know of an event that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
Knott's Berry Farm
Legoland California
- Surfers' Cove at LEGOLAND Water Park – opens summer.
- Red, White and Boom – July 4.
- Brick-or-Treat – Saturdays in October.
- Holidays at Legoland – November 24, 2017 through January 1, 2018
- Kids' New Year's Eve – December 31.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 28, 2016.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Three Day Tickets |
The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Tickets expire May 25, 2017, and are blocked out April 9–23, 2017. Read full details of this offer in the January 17 Disneyland Resort Update. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. |

Discounts for:
Everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Customers can add a Snowman Mickey tote or Disneyland castle throw blanket to their qualifying purchase for $20. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix. Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.
The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next 8-11 months.
