Disney Dollars discontinued | Skyway station to be demolished | CHOC Walk 2016 | Constructionland | Beyond the Berm | This and that… | Crowd Forecast
Disney Dollars discontinued
If you have some older Disney Dollars tucked away in a drawer somewhere in anticipation of your next Disney vacation, better check eBay before you use them to buy a box of popcorn.
Disney last Thursday confirmed an online rumor that Disney Dollars would be discontinued over the weekend, and stopped selling them as of Saturday, May 14. The news sparked a buying frenzy, and the Disneyland Resort reportedly ran through its remaining inventory by Friday morning.

Until Saturday, Disney also sold Disney Dollars by phone, and readers reported hold times of up to an hour once the news hit social media. Even then, the only bills available for purchase were the $50 denomination, and purchases were subject to a $15 shipping fee.
If you've never heard of Disney Dollars, they were the private currency of the Disneyland Resort, and accepted as cash at any Disney-owned retailer. Disney Dollars were introduced at Disneyland in 1987, and quickly became popular with collectors due to their colorful character designs. The program expanded to Walt Disney World later that year, and eventually to the Disney Stores. Disney Dollars were tied to the U.S. dollar, and change was given in U.S. currency.

Some parents used Disney Dollars as a way to help their children budget for souvenirs during vacations. Disney treated Disney Dollars as merchandise when selling them, a fact which let smart buyers buy Disney Dollars with a credit card and have instant spendable paper “money” in hand without paying ATM or cash advance fees.
Disney last released a new design in 2014, featuring three iconic Disney mountain attractions.
The $50 note released in 2005 to commemorate Disneyland's 50th anniversary may be worth over $1,000 today. Photo © Disney.
As is often the case, the retirement news also prompted a spike in prices on the secondary market. Disney Dollars, which were barely selling for face value a week before the retirement, were commanding much higher prices over the weekend. Some $1 notes are selling for over $100, and those commemorative 50th Anniversary $50 bills could fetch over $1000 in mint condition.
So while Disney will still accept at their face value any Disney Dollars you may still have, you might want to first check and see how much that bill is worth on the secondary market. Who knows? You may be sitting on enough $1 Disney Dollars to pay for your next Disney vacation.
Skyway station to be demolished
In last week's Update, we pointed out that one dirt-covered structure visible from the Mickey and Friends parking structure was the long-abandoned Skyway station. The station has only recently become visible from outside of Disneyland because of deforestation of the adjacent area from the Star Wars Land construction project. From inside Disneyland, you can really only catch a glimpse of the structure if the sun is at a favorable angle and you know where to look.
The Fantasyland Skyway station—seen here from the Mickey and Friends parking structure—is scheduled to be demolished 22 years after the ride closed. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
The chalet has been vacant since the Skyway closed in 1994, occasionally serving as a venue for cast parties but never open to the public. In recent years, Disney set up a “dragon lair” in the area during Mickey's Halloween Party, complete with glowing “eyes” and smoke effects.
David Koenig reported the abandoned station was slated to be demolished in 2013, but that tip didn't pan out. Now it looks like the building will finally be razed. No word whether it's part of the Star Wars Land footprint, or will be used for another project.
CHOC Walk 2016
Childrens Hospital Orange County has provided additional details about the 2016 CHOC Walk in the Park, an annual fundraiser for the Orange County institution, as well as the Paint Your Way to Miracles and Magic event that acts as an unofficial kickoff for the annual campaign.
As we've previously shared, the 2016 event will be held on Sunday, October 30, much later in the month than normal. This will create the first-ever opportunity for a Halloween-themed event, and CHOC has says this event will be “extra spooktacular.” The minimum donation/fundraising commitment for the 2016 Walk has increased to $85 per person.
Paint Your Way to Miracles and Magic
The 2016 Paint Your Way to Miracles and Magic event is scheduled for July 25 in Downtown Disney. This annual event offers children the opportunity to help create a new tile mural to be displayed in Downtown Disney for the following year. The completed mural is placed in a lighted case and displayed along the walkway between the Disneyland Hotel and Downtown Disney. Once removed from the Disneyland Resort, each year's mural is placed on permanent display on the hospital campus.
Registration for Paint Your Way to Miracles and Magic opens June 1 via the CHOC website. A minimum donation of $60 per painter is required, and there are only 192 tiles available.
Constructionland
The most notable change this week is the large earthen berm taking shape inside the construction zone, and the continued demolition of smaller support buildings on the west side of the park.

Beyond the Berm
The Seven Seas Food Festival kicked off last week at Sea World San Diego, and runs through June 12.

…Last week we incorrectly listed the date of the upcoming Artist Showcase with SHAG and HARVEYS. The event is this Saturday, May 21, from 3–5 p.m. Product will be available for sale starting at 8:00 a.m., and vouchers will be distributed for the afternoon signing event at the time of purchase. This is expected to be one of the most popular merchandise events of the year, and there is a firm limit of 5 items per transaction.
Popcorn lovers can try a variety of flavors every day at the Cozy Cone in Disney California Adventure. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
…The Cozy Cone popcorn stand in Disney California Adventure has switched from its practice of offering just one or two unique flavors per day to a new system where a half-dozen popcorn flavors are available on request.
To make the flavored popcorn, workers scoop buttered popcorn into a container, add a scoop of powdered seasoning, and shake to combine. Reader cstephens noted that lines at the stand have been longer since the change, as each serving of popcorn must be individually flavored.

…We reported last week that the official Disneyland Resort refurbishment calendar lists brief closures of both Star Wars: Path of the Jedi and Tomorrowland's Galactic Grill later this month. The brief closures are said to be for minor updates, and do not signal the end of the Season of the Force promotion. The update schedule is:
- Star Wars: Path of the Jedi – closed May 24 for refurbishment.
- Galactic Grill – closed May 23 – 26 for refurbishment.
…It's probably worth noting that Disneyland's “Value” admission season comes to an end on May 19. For admission purposes, everyday between now and August 22 is considered “Regular” or “Peak” season.
…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We'll also include a fun MouseAdventure bonus, such as an Eye Spy or a trivia question. To subscribe to our free newsletter, just enter your e-mail in the box below.

- D23 Expo – July 14–16, 2017. Tickets go on sale July 14, 2016.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

School Holidays
Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2016
- Nevada Day (observed) – Friday, October 28. A school holiday for our neighbors to the northeast creates a 3-day weekend and usually adds to the Halloween weekend crowds. Some Nevada schools take the entire week off as a Fall Break.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 20–21. Expect holiday-level crowds October 19–24 as Utah students and families take advantage of a Fall Break scheduled around an annual state education convention. Not all Utah schools close for UEA, but the impact on the resort is significant enough to mention.
- Thanksgiving Break – November 21–25. Many local schools close for the entire week of Thanksgiving.
- Winter Break – December 19, 2016 – January 6, 2017. Most schools close only two of these three weeks, but some districts close all three weeks due to the Saturday Christmas.

Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 28, 2016.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.
The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next 8-11 months.
