Sleeping Beauty Castle debuts bold new color design
What does Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle have in common with one of San Francisco's famous Victorian-style Painted Ladies? Very little, except that the exterior paint on each can be extremely polarizing within their respective fan bases. Disneyland this weekend took the wraps off of Sleeping Beauty Castle following a months-long renovation, revealing in full a bold new color design and decorative accents. Not surprisingly, the new hues have garnered both praise and complaint from online onlookers.

Imagineer Kim Irvine was the art director and colorist for this project, her sixth time working on the repainting of Sleeping Beauty Castle. Irvine says she took her inspiration for this interpretation from a number of sources, including Herb Ryman's original concept art for the castle, the cobalt blue tones seen in illustrator Eyvind Earle's renderings of Sleeping Beauty Castle, and even the castle used in the Walt Disney Pictures logo.
Irvine also relied on the advice of her former mentor, Disney creative director John Hench. Irvine worked with Hench on her first three castle refurbishment projects, and after his death in 2004, led the 50th and 60th anniversary renovations before the current project. Irvine shares that Hench was never satisfied with the earliest gray and tan tones of Sleeping Beauty Castle, and always encouraged her to push the fantasy of the castle. She recalls Hench saying that visitor come to Disneyland expecting to see something different than they would find on their city streets. The challenge, she says, is to push the colors without making it look like toy land.

A day before Disney removed the scrim and scaffolding that surrounded Sleeping Beauty Castle, I was part of a small group of media invited to walk up onto the roof and get a very up-close and personal look at the renovation work. It was a rare opportunity to see Disneyland from a perspective few outsiders get.
Jim Slagle, director of facility asset management for the resort, joined Irvine in leading the tour among the towers, and shared how part of the project involved replacing the castle's original 1955 roof and turret caps. He pointed out the wood cedar shake shingles, explaining that each was cut by hand in Disneyland's show shops to fit. The turret caps were measured and digitally modeled to ensure that the replacements would be an exact fit.

From ground level it can be hard to see all of the little details that go into painting and texturing Sleeping Beauty Castle, but Irvine says that without those touches, the castle would feel very flat. Most areas have at least three layers of paint, which can include base coats, glazes, hand-applied spatters, airbrushed shadows, and shimmering highlights. The surfaces are then covered with a clear coat to help slow fading due to UV exposure.
Up on the roof, it's also easier to clearly see some of the forced perspective techniques that make the 70-foot-tall Sleeping Beauty Castle seem larger than it is. Shingles get smaller as they progress up the roof line, and the upper windows are much smaller than they seem from the ground. The stones that form the castle walls also shrink in size the higher they go, creating the illusion of height.

Irvine says John Hench often spoke about atmospheric perspective, where things in distance are lighter and bluer due to the effect of atmosphere on the color spectrum. She relied on this technique in the color design for the castle, using warmer, darker colors at the bottom, and cooler, lighter colors at the top to help the castle feel larger.
The diamond and zig-zag patterns on some of the roofs are original, and have just been updated during each refurbishment with a different color scheme. Irvine says the “pixie dust” added to the center roof section is the only pattern added during this project. The golden accents are striking against the cobalt blue roof. Irvine noted that all of the spires were freshly covered in gold leaf, and that the flags and pennants were new. She also took the opportunity to dispel a common myth about the castle's brass-plated chapel spire, which urban legend says was left unfinished as a reminder of Walt Disney's quote that Disneyland would never be complete. In fact, the chapel spire is a reproduction of the now-destroyed spire from Notre Dame de Paris.

Because Sleeping Beauty Castle has many roles at Disneyland, including pyrotechnic launch platform and projection screen, Irvine says she works closely with the entertainment team to ensure that materials and coatings are flame-resistant, and that the paint finishes and colors don't interfere with projection shows like Mickey's Mix Magic.

To be sure, the colors on the castle look completely different depending on the sunlight, and it looks like the official Disney photo was taken on a somewhat overcast morning. In person, the bricks of the castle appear to be shades of mauve and violet with golden undertones. The squirrel downspouts, added during a previous refurbishment, and some molding pieces stand out against the new colors. The entry archway was redone in gold, as was the Disney family crest above the castle gates. Overall, this version of Sleeping Beauty Castle has more depth, dimension and contrast than prior designs.
This refurbishment was not limited to the castle walls. Jim Slagle says his team took advantage of the long closure to update Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough, which is scheduled to reopen May 28. He said they punched the color of the show sets and improved the audio and the lighting throughout the attraction.

At ground level, workers are landscaping the castle grounds with pink roses that Irvine says perfectly complement the colors of the castle. Rosemary plants will fill the banks to the water. And later this year, workers will install a tree as tribute to Herb Ryman, replacing an earlier planting that unfortunately did not thrive.
However, the refurbishment did not extend into Fantasyland, where the walls of the castle conceal the show buildings for Fantasyland attractions like Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan's Flight. There the walls are still shades of beige and gray, and blend into the surrounding facades.

Asked why Imagineering decided to refurbish Sleeping Beauty Castle even as a brand-new 14-acre Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge neared completion, Slagle said the goal is to showcase the entire park. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge is the future of the park, but Sleeping Beauty Castle is the park's heritage. Another member of the team piped up to add, “the castle doesn't play second fiddle to any other structure in the park.”

Celebrating the Haunted Mansion's 50th anniversary

Disneyland plans to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the iconic Haunted Mansion attraction with a pair of merchandise special events in August, but the details of the events mysteriously vanished from the Disney website this weekend. Here's what we can share until the pages materialize again.
The events are scheduled for August 7–8 and August 8–9, 2019. Each party begins with event sign-in on day 1, and a midnight-to-4:00 a.m. party on day 2.
As this is a merchandise special event, it's no surprise that the event catalog includes over 200 collectible items created for the event. The extensive selection includes the usual assortment of shirts and pins with the event logo, but also a new Dooney and Bourke handbag design and more than a dozen new figurines.
Popular Disney collaborators Dave Avanzino, Jerrod Maruyama, Miss Mindy, the Harveys, and more will have new pieces for this event.
Well-heeled collectors may be interested in original Haunted Mansion artwork by pop culture artist SHAG, offered at $25,000, or a one-of-a-kind guitar decorated with Haunted Mansion images and listed at $33,000.
Most of the limited edition items will be offered to event guests using Disney's Random Selection Process, in which guests select the items they'd like to purchase and Disney's system distributes the available quantity among the interested customers.
Day 1 of each event begins with sign-in and merchandise pickup at the Disneyland Hotel between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., where guests can also browse any remaining merchandise in an event store and take photos with themed backdrops. At 11:30 p.m., event guests can line up outside the Disneyland gates to await entry to the park at 12:01.
The day 2 party runs until 4:00 a.m., and includes many attractions in New Orleans Square, Frontierland, Adventureland, and Critter Country. Select shops and eateries will have special event offerings, and there will be live entertainment throughout the park.
Event guests are encouraged to come in costume (subject to Disney guidelines) and pose for photos in front of themed backdrops.
Per the Disney website, tickets for the $299 event were to have gone on sale Thursday, May 24 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific time. Each event guest must plan to purchase their own ticket, as there is a limit of one ticket per person. We'll share any updates as we get them via our Facebook or Twitter accounts.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Everyone
Purchase with purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced-price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.
Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.

Character meet-and-greet at Disney California Adventure – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, and receive one free image download per visit.
Star Wars Imperial meet-and-greet at Disneyland – cardholders have access to a private character meet-and-greet photo opportunity in the Star Tours Launch Bay in Tomorrowland. Offered daily from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Darth Vader is once again the character featured at this location.
Disneyland Resort merchandise – Cardholders also receive 10% off qualifying merchandise purchases of $50 or more from Disney-operated retail stores.

- Limited-Time Southern California Resident 3-Day Park Hopper ticket – $234 for ages 3 and up+

Disneyland Resort Military Discounts
Ticket discounts
Through December 18, 2019, active and retired U.S. military personnel (including active and retired members of the United States Coast Guard, National Guard and Reservists) or their spouses can purchase:
- Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $178 each (an increase of $10 from the 2018 offer)
- Disney Military Promotional 4-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $198 each (an increase of $10 from the 2018 offer)
Disneyland tickets may be used through December 18, 2019, excluding the spring break blockout of April 14–22, 2019.
Active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets for themselves and up to five additional family members or friends. No more than six Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or spouse) pursuant to this offer. All tickets and options are non-transferable and must be used by December 18, 2019.
Hotel discounts
Military discounts are valid for stays most nights from January 1 through December 19, 2019. Travel must be completed by December 20, 2019.
Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (714) 520-7088 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30% to 40% off, based on room category.
Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member.
Photopass Discount
Eligible service members can purchase the Photopass Collection for $49 plus tax through December 21, 2019. The package includes digital downloads of all PhotoPass photos in the user's account when they redeem the voucher; a voucher for a dining print package, and a Disneyland photo disc with 350 stock photos from around the Disneyland Resort.

Here are some other details you should know about regarding the offers:
- Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased at participating U.S. military sales outlets ONLY by Eligible Service Members (defined below) or their spouses (but not both), for use by themselves and other family members and friends, as provided herein. These Tickets may not be otherwise transferred, distributed or resold.
- Eligible Service Members are active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service (PHS), and the Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
- The actual prices charged at the individual U.S. military base ticket offices for Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be less than the prices set forth above.
- Participating military sales outlets must require that Eligible Service Members (or their spouses) present valid military identification to purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets.
- Disney 3-Day or 4-Day Military Promotional Tickets for admission to the Disneyland Resort expire and may not be used after December 19, 2019. Valid military identification will be required for purchase and use.
- No more than six (6) Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased and (if applicable) activated by any Eligible Service Member or spouse (regardless of the place of purchase and whether purchased by that person or that person’s spouse). In addition, one of the six (6) tickets purchased must be used by the Eligible Service Member or his/her spouse.
- Each Disney Military Promotional Ticket must be used by the same person on any and all days.
- The Photopass Collection can be purchased only in person at Kingswell Camera Shop in Disney California Adventure, or at Main Street Photo Supply in Disneyland.

Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco.
Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – these package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants.
