The $300 Pixar Pier Premiere
When Disney announced the $300 ticket price for an evening Pixar Pier premiere event, one commentator on the Disney Parks Blog asked if the decimal point was in the right place. “Did you guys mean $29.99?”
The 6-hour event, scheduled for June 22 (a day before the area officially reopens to the public), offers exclusive access for a “very limited” number of buyers to the rethemed Paradise Pier area of Disney California Adventure. After walking a red carpet into the premiere, guests can ride Incredicoaster, (formerly California Screamin'), which has been converted into an Incredibles theme with new on-ride effects. Pixar Pal-A-Round (formerly Mickey's Fun Wheel), Toy Story Midway Mania and the Pixar-fied Games of the Boardwalk are also open for the party.
Event attendees can create a progressive dinner with one sample from each of four renamed food kiosks in Pixar Pier—Adorable Snowman Frosted Treats, Angry Dogs, Poultry Palace and Señor Buzz Churros—along with the new Jack-Jack's Cookie Num Num near Incredicoaster. Pixar characters, special backdrops, and themed entertainment are offered around the area, with unlimited PhotoPass downloads included in the ticket price. The rest of Disney California Adventure is open to party guests, so any guests with blocked out annual passports or non-passholders can step outside of Pixar Pier and take in the other sights and sounds of Pixar Fest.
Attendees also have a first-come, first-served opportunity to snag a table on the upper level of the new Lamplight Lounge (formerly the Cove Bar) or to line up across the way at Knick's Knacks to buy Pixar Pier merchandise, while supplies last. And of course, everyone will receive an event credential and lovely parting Pixar gift to take home after the event.
For some people, the opportunity to wander Pixar Pier 18 hours ahead of the general public is worth the price of admission—and that is perfectly fine. I'm sure I've spent as much or more on things that other people would find to be ridiculous. But what troubles me is the trend at Disneyland to create an upcharge event at every opportunity, and what this trend might mean for the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge in 2019.
For much of the early 2000s, new rides, lands, and even the whole DCA theme park opened following a series of free or low-cost previews for annual passholders and cast members. Some of these were the basic “show your pass and ride” soft-openings of refurbished attractions, while others required advance registration or even a lottery selection to get a ticket. When Cars Land opened in 2012, Disney offered passholders the option of buying $50 tickets for a charity preview event, or entering a lottery for a free passholder preview a few days later.
When Pandora – The World of Avatar opened last summer at Walt Disney World, Animal Kingdom hosted 10 days of free previews for passholders. But since the AP preview of Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters in 2016, Disneyland has seemingly ended passholder previews in favor of added-cost events. The final days of the Tower of Terror at DCA were commemorated with a $100-per-person Final Checkout Party in 2017, followed later that year with a $150-per-person event to preview the new Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout attraction.
Given that both events sold out, it seems Disney is trying to see just how much people will pay for early access to a new ride or land. This brings us to this $300 preview of Pixar Pier, for which tickets went on sale last week, and were still available at press time. If this event sells out, then Disney has ample justification for raising the price for the next preview, perhaps for Jessie's Critter Carousel or the new Inside Out-themed attractions, which are still to open on Pixar Pier.
And then let's think to a calendar far, far away, when Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge opens at Disneyland. If Disney commands $300 for a preview of a collection of rethemed rides and outdoor vending carts, how much will tickets run to be among the first to visit Planet Batuu? At the rate these events are rising in price, the decimal point will likely move another place to the right by the time those tickets go on sale.
2018 Halloween Time and Mickey's Halloween Party details
The Disneyland Resort will celebrate Halloween Time September 7 through October 31, with Mickey's Halloween Party planned for 15 nights at Disneyland.
Halloween Time – Friday, September 7 through Wednesday, October 31
Halloween Time brings the return of popular attractions to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. While Jack Skellington has claimed Disneyland's Haunted Mansion as his own—transforming it to the Haunted Mansion Holiday—Oogie Boogie will return to Disney California Adventure park across the esplanade. The main entrance gates will feature an Oogie Boogie sculpture, and a cloud of bats will swirl around the spire of the Carthay Circle Theater. Buena Vista Street will be treated with Halloween decor, including the popular Headless Horseman statue introduced in 2017.
Cars Land will again host the Haul-o-Ween festival, featuring the Radiator Springs residents in their Halloween costumes. Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOreee and Luigi’s Honkin’ Haul-O-Ween attractions will each feature Halloween music and decor for the season. The Guardians of the Galaxy – Monsters After Dark overlay will return for 2018.
In addition to the Haunted Mansion Holiday at Disneyland, Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy returns for Halloween Time. Also returning are the popular Dia de los Muertos displays in Frontierland and the Main Street Pumpkin Festival. This is always a fun time to visit Disneyland, with the Disney characters dressed in Halloween costumes and the park decorated for the season.
Mickey's Halloween Party
This after-hours event takes place on 15 nights this year, and requires a separate event ticket to attend.
Mickey's Halloween Party includes trick-or-treat stations, themed entertainment, a performance of the event-exclusive Halloween Screams fireworks, and a return of the Frightfully Fun Parade and Ride of the Headless Horseman down Main Street, U.S.A., both introduced in 2016.
Ticket prices jumped again this year, with Halloween night tickets hitting $130. All regular-price tickets are now above the $100 mark for the first time. AP discounts apply to only three of the parties, all on weeknights (see the price calendar below). It appears Disney has eliminated the advance purchase discount for non-passholders, and the regular price is the same regardless of when you purchase your ticket.
Two party perks added in 2017 are back for 2018. Party guests can take advantage of a three-hour early-admission period before the party kicks off to visit both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure to see the seasonal decorations in both parks before the main event begins. PhotoPass downloads of souvenir photos taken during the event are again included, although this perk won't matter as much to Signature and Premier annual passholders.

As we've noted in past years, Disney seems to have realized that some locals were taking advantage of the three-hour “early” admission offered on party nights, and are using the party as their semi-annual trip to Disneyland. In past years, going the party route offered a slightly higher cost per hour, but a lower absolute price. The party also offers smaller crowds and access to exclusive Halloween entertainment.
That math doesn't work as well in 2018, with the Halloween Party ticket costing as much as $23 more than a one-day ticket for the same day.
The seasons calender has not yet been published for October 2018, so we do not yet know if Halloween will be a labeled a Value, Regular, or Peak day—but assuming it is labeled a Regular day, the choice is between a one-day ticket valid from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (10 hours) for $117, or a Halloween Party ticket, valid from 3 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. (8 hours) for $130.
In this example, someone planning to visit on September 19 could buy one of the following:
- A $97 one-day ticket, good for 10 hours (8 a.m. to 6 p.m.)
- A $105 Halloween Party ticket, good for 8 hours (3 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.)
Advance purchase tickets for the Halloween Party go on sale to Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders on Tuesday, June 5. Passholders can purchase tickets online by logging into their account on the Disneyland website. Disney Rewards Visa card holder and Disney Vacation Club members may also be eligible for this pre-sale, so check with your respective member services departments, or by by calling (714) 781-4400, or in person at a Disneyland Resort ticket booth.
Tickets go on sale Tuesday, June 12 to the general public.

…Event planners last week announced that the 2019 Star Wars Celebration will be held in Chicago April 11–15.The event has previously been hosted in Anaheim and in Orlando, and fans hoped the date and location of the 2019 event would correspond to the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at either Disneyland or Walt Disney World. Instead, the convention moved to Chicago in April—satisfying nobody, but avoiding an almost certain crowding issue for either of the two Disney resorts. Tickets go on sale June 5, 2018, at the event website.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Southern California CityPASS |
Southern California CityPASS ($353/$324) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2018. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $44/$36. This upgraded pass is only available for purchase directly from the CityPASS website. You can also upgrade your CityPASS to add more days at participating locations:

Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you pre-purchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Southern California residents can visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks multiple days before May 24, 2018 for as little as $159 with the 2018 So Cal Resident ticket. The 2-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 24. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $159 for ages 3 and up, a discount of 20% compared to box office prices and a $10 increase from the 2017 promotion. You can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $45, a savings of up to $40 compared to the box office price of a two-day park-hopper ticket. If you want an extra day to visit the parks, there is also a 3-Day 1-Park per Day option ($199) and a 3-Day Park Hopper ticket ($244) in the promotion. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them by calling (714) 781-4636. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 21, 2018. Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – These package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants.
