Summer of Heroes begins Saturday

The Summer of Heroes promotion kicks off at Disney California Adventure this Saturday, May 27. The marketing campaign ties into the grand opening of Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout, the controversial replacement and retheme of the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attraction.

Along with the opening of the new ride, the Summer of Heroes promotion brings a host of new entertainment offerings to DCA. We expect the most popular to be the Avengers Training Initiative and the Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Dance Off, two interactive shows that feature popular characters from the Marvel Universe.
Avengers Training Initiative
The Marvel version of the Jedi Training Academy, this show will give younger Avengers fans the chance to train with Black Widow and Hawkeye. Like Jedi Training Academy, pre-registration is required to participate. Children ages 4 to 12—and their parents—must first check in at a kiosk in the Hollywood Backlot area and sign up for an available show.
Sign-ups are first-come, first-serve, and begin as soon as DCA opens for the day. On days with Extra Magic Hours (usually Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday), guests with Extra Magic Hour benefits can sign up before the park opens to day guests. On those days, day guests should be prepared for spots to be scarce, especially for the earliest shows.
The show itself takes place on the Hollywood Backlot Stage, with six performances scheduled each day: 1:05, 2:15, 3:25, 4:45, 5:55, and 7:05 p.m.
Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Dance Off
Starring Star-Lord and Gamora, this interactive show is set to the music from Guardians of the Galaxy. You won't get an opportunity for selfies with the two humanoid stars, but after Groot makes a mid-show appearance, he'll remain for a photo opportunity.
There are currently six performances scheduled each day, at 9:45 and 11:00 a.m., and 12:15, 1:40, 2:50, and 4:00 p.m. Based on the map on the Disneyland website, it appears this show will take place in the courtyard to the side of the Guardians of the Galaxy tower, adjacent to the parade gate.
We will have much more coverage of the Summer of Heroes this weekend when the promotion officially kicks off, and in next week's Disneyland Resort Update. The Summer of Heroes is currently scheduled to run through September 10, 2017.
Disney Junior Dance Party! debut Friday
The new Disney Junior Dance Party! debuts in Disney California Adventure this Friday, May 26. The show is the latest stage show aimed at the preschool set, and replaces Disney Junior – Live on Stage!
Disney has released very few details about this new show, but we know that it will feature characters from Disney Junior animated shows. “Doc McStuffins” and “Sofia the First” will return for this show, joined by characters from The Lion Guard and the new cartoon series Mickey and the Roadster Racers.
Showtimes for Friday are 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., and 12:30, 2:15, and 3:15 p.m.
Bid on a Guardians of the Galaxy media gift
Items MousePlanet receives at Disney press events are sold at auction to benefit a number of local charities, including Team Muscle Makers for UCMD, an organization founded by MousePlanet readers Melissa Martin Mayorgas and Lonna Eshelman.
The team raises awareness for Ullrich Congenital Muscular Dystrophy, a rare form of muscular dystrophy with only a few hundred documented cases worldwide. The team raises money through endurance events, including runDisney events at both Disneyland and now Walt Disney World as an official runDisney charity partner, with the funds going to the Muscle Disease Clinic at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego.

…This is the final week to ride Hyperspace Mountain at Disneyland. The ride closes next Tuesday, May 30, to remove the Star Wars overlay. Classic Space Mountain reopens Thursday, June 1.
…Build-a-Bear has a new collection of Guardians of the Galaxy plush animals and costumes available in its Downtown Disney store. Some are available to take home from the store, but two are online exclusives. You can order them in the store for home delivery, or purchase via the Build-a-Bear website.

Disneyland Resort Hotels
- Grand Californian Hotel Pools – closed through spring 2017. All three of the pools at the hotel will be closed for refurbishment, including the Redwood Pool and water slide, the Fountain Pool, and the Mariposa Pool. The cabanas will also close during this time. During the refurbishment, which is expected to last at least through March, people staying at the Grand Californian Hotel can use the pool facilities at the Disneyland Hotel or Paradise Pier Hotel.
- Pinocchio's Workshop – closed. No reopening date available.

- 2017 Grad Nites – May 5, 6, 10, 17, 19, 20, 24, 30, and 31; June 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 10, 14, 16, and 17.
- D23 Expo – July 14–16. Tickets are now on sale through the official D23 website. Saturday-only tickets are sold out, but 3-day passes are still available, as are single-day tickets for for Friday and Sunday.
- CHOC Walk in the Park – Sunday, August 27. Registration is now open.
- Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – August 31 through September 3. This event adds to the Labor Day weekend crowds. Registration is still open for some events via the runDisney website.
- Gay Days at Disneyland (unofficial event) – October 6–8. More information on the event website.
- Dapper Day Fall Outing to Disneyland (unofficial event) – Sunday, November 5. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
- Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend – November 9–12. This event adds to the Veteran's Day weekend crowds. Registration is still open for some events via the runDisney website.
2018
- Star Wars – The Light Side Half Marathon Weekend – January 11–14, 2018. Registration has been delayed, and will open at a later, unspecified date.
- Dapper Day Spring Outing to Disneyland (unofficial event) – Sunday, April 22. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 10-13, 2018. Registration was scheduled to open June 27, 2017, but may be delayed.
School Holidays
Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other school holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2017
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 19–20. Expect large attendance levels October 19–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- Nevada Day – October 28. Nevada schools will be closed on Friday, October 28 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. 2017 Military Salute Offer Disney released details of its 2017 Military Salute offer for Disneyland and Walt Disney World last October, and the tickets are valid January 1 through April 8 and April 24 through December 19, 2017. At the time we first shared details of the offer, we did not know about (or Disney had not announced) a special PhotoPass promotion also available to military personnel. Through December 19, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel who are eligible for the Military Salute offer can also purchase the Disney PhotoPass Collection for $49, a discount of 50% over the usual $99 price. The Disney PhotoPass Collection includes digital downloads of all available PhotoPass photos linked to your account, a voucher for a dining print package and a Disneyland Resort Gallery Disc with 350 high-resolution professional photos from around Disneyland Resort. Southern California CityPASS |
Southern California CityPASS ($346/$314) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2017. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $42/$34. Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco. Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – These package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants. The Disneyland website does not list the blockout dates for the Costco-exclusive Disney California Adventure Park Fun Pass. The blockout dates are as follows:
- 2017 – January 1, 2; February 18, 19; March 18, 25; April 1, 8, 9, 14, 15, 22, 29; May 6, 13, 20, 26, 27, 28; June 3, 10, 17, 24; July 1-4, 8, 15, 22, 29; August 5, 12, 19; September 2,l 3; November 10, 11, 23, 24, 25.
