Fantasmic is back – mostly
It’s been just over a year since the 45-foot-tall, fire-breathing Maleficent dragon figure set itself on fire during a performance of Fantasmic at Disneyland. and last Friday fans packed viewing areas around the Rivers of America to watch as the show returned for first time following a 13-month hiatus.
Disney had previously announced the dragon would not return for this version of the show, and that Fantasmic would instead feature an all-new finale. The park also brought back the fan-favorite Peter Pan sequence, which has not been seen since it was replaced by a Pirates of the Caribbean scene in 2017.
To avoid the opening-night crowds on Friday, I instead headed to Disneyland on Saturday to watch both performances of Fantasmic to see the changes in person, but also to get a feel for the seating options and strategies.
For me, a large part of the magic of Fantasmic is the staging. Unlike Walt Disney World, which has an amphitheater purpose-built for the show, Disneyland’s Fantasmic takes place smack dab in the middle of Frontierland. By day, guests climb all around the Cider Mill on Tom Sawyer Island, but at night that same building turns into the stage for Mickey’s dream. Massive towers rise up from the ground to light the performances, and Disney’s river craft are repurposed for the show.
Unfortunately, Disney hasn’t found a way to make rows of bleachers appear and disappear each night, and the walkways around the Rivers of America serve as the viewing area. No matter what alterations Disney makes to the area, there isn’t enough room for everyone, so visitors who want to ensure an unobstructed view of the show have to make a sacrifice – give up park time, or spend more money.
If you’re willing to spend the money, there are several ways to get preferred viewing for Fantasmic. Dinner packages are available from $35 to $99 and higher per person, and offer you a spot to sit on the ground and catch the show. Another dinner package lets you watch the show from your table at the River Belle Terrace, but the view may be somewhat obstructed depending on where you’re seating. At the top end of the spectrum, you can always book a VIP tour, and request reserved seating for the show.
For those who would rather save the cash, there are standby viewing areas which offer a great view of the show, but require you to show up at least two hours in advance to hold your spot. Beyond the time investment, there’s also the comfort factor, in that these areas are standing-room only. You may be permitted to sit down for some of your wait, but at least this first weekend cast members required guests to stand up 90 minutes before the first showtime to make room for additional people.
You can minimize your wait, and your standing time, by catching the second show, but this may not be an option for families with young children, or for anyone who wants to be in bed before Midnight.
For my visit, I wanted to be able to evaluate the various standby areas, and so did not book a dining package. As expected, the front row on the bridge above the Pirates of the Caribbean entrance filled up just as soon as cast members allowed guests to save space. It’s a great view, but you need to be prepared to stay put for 2+ hours.
By 7:30 p.m., all of the open standby viewing areas were full, and cast members were already telling people they needed to stand up and make room for new arrivals. Personally I did not want to stand behind three rows of people for 90 minutes just to have a mostly-obstructed view of the show, so I joined some friends for a Dole Whip and decided to come back closer to showtime.
I was near the Harbor Galley about 30 minutes before the show, and discovered that once the majority of people with dining package vouchers had been admitted, cast members opened another standby viewing area just below the Pelican’s Landing seating area. Since I was solo I was easily able to get a spot against the back rope, and the sloped surface meant I was high enough to see over most everyone in front of me. This was not a perfect spot for the show, but it was nicely centered on the west mist screen, and had a clear view of the water. Not bad for free.
After the fireworks, I made my move to find a better spot for the second show, and found room at the top of a staircase leading down to the river walkway. I figured being on the top step would be to my advantage when the people in front were made to stand up – not realizing the gentleman already sitting on the staircase was NBA-player tall. We laughed and made it work, but next time I’ll pay more attention. Regardless, it was a good view, and did not require a 2-hour wait.
With all this I got to see the show twice in one night. The show looks and sounds better than ever – colors are brighter, projections are cleaner, the audio is clear. I loved watching for the Sailing Ship Columbia to come around the corner, and for first-timer viewers to jump as the canon was fired.
For the new battle with Mickey Mouse, projections make it appear that Maleficent is rising on a tangle of thorns, as shadows of her dragon form appear on the cider mill behind her. Maleficent sets the Rivers of America on fire, and Sorcerer Mickey uses his powers to control the dancing fountains to extinquish the blaze and defeat Maleficent. Mickey’s new tricks are cool, but they’re not “5-ton, 45-foot-tall, fire-breathing dragon which appeared out of NOWWHERE cool.”
I read a comment about the show from somenone who had never seen the show before Friday, and didn’t understand the negativity they were reading about it. They were dazzled by the entire production, and thought it was the best thing they’d ever seen in a Disney theme park. I GET IT. This version of Fantasmic may well be the best thing you’ve ever seen – but it used to be even better.
This projected Ursula is good enough, unless you saw the giant Ursula float that once slithered around Tom Sawyer Island, or the Flotsam & Jetsam puppets which were briefly added in 2009. This projection of Tick Tock Croc does the job, but not as well as the massive crocodile which once chased Captain Hook. Pinocchio is still in the show, but this projection doesn’t elicit the gasps of surprise and delight like the original dancing puppets did.
This, sadly, has been the evolution of Fantasmic, with practical effects and huge set pieces replaced by projections, and I don’t want to see that happen with the Maleficent dragon finale. My fear is that as more time passes, the less likely it is that we’ll ever see a mechanical dragon rise out of the pit again.
I completely agree that “B-mode” Fantasmic is better than no Fantasmic, and I’m glad that the show is back and creating jobs for more than 100 cast and crew every night, but are those the only two options? Is there an option in which Maleficent is restored to the show in all of her fire-breathing glory? We can only wait and see, and hope that “good enough” isn’t for Disneyland’s leadership.
3-Day Disneyland ticket offer goes on sale this week
Wednesday is the first day to purchase tickets for the new 3-day Disneyland ticket offer which is valid through early fall.
Visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks three weekdays between June 10 and September 26, 2024 for as little as $149 for ages 3-9, or $249 for ages 10 and older using a new discounted ticket which goes on sale May 29, 2024. That represents a savings of up to $219 off the regular price of a three-day, one-park-per-day ticket for children ages 3-9. The adult offer is a $141 discount, and is the same price than the summer 2023 deal.
You can also choose between a ticket good Monday through Thursday OR a slightly more expensive ticket good any day of the week. There are also options to add park hopping and Disney Genie+ service to your ticket at the time of purchase.
This new offer differs from past discouts discounts, so be sure to pay close attention to details before you purchase.
The 3-Day Disneyland Ticket Offer is a 3-day, 1-park-per-day ticket that offers admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure:
- The weekday ticket – starting at $149 for ages 3-9; $249 for ages 10 and older. Three weekdays (Mondays through Thursdays only) between June 10 and September 26, 2024
- The any day ticket – starting at $199 for ages 3-9; $299, for ages 10 and older. Three days (any day of the week, including weekends) between June 10 and September 26, 2024
You can use every day of the 3-Day Disneyland Ticket at the same theme park, or visit different parks on different days, but you can’t use it to enter both parks on the same day unless you add the park-hopper option ($70 per ticket)
There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means that you can use the first admission on June 10 and wait until September 26 to use the remaining admission. However, remember that you must make a theme park reservation for each day that you want to use the ticket. Disney also warns that reservations for this category of ticket are not guaranteed for any particular dates, and that a date may sell out in this ticket category though other ticket types have reservations of available. It is probably best to purchase early and make reservations as soon as they open for your desired travel dates. Each day of use constitutes one full day of use.
Tickets expire on September 26, 2024, and have no holiday blackouts. That means that you can visit on the 4th of July holiday using a weekday ticket, assuming reservations are available.
May purchase up to 15 tickets per eligible person per day. Tickets are nonrefundable, may not be sold or transferred for commercial use and exclude activities/events separately priced. Offer may not be combined with other ticket discounts or promotions. Subject to restrictions and change or cancellation without notice.
Visit Get Away Today starting May 29, 2024, to take advantage of this ticket offer! Book at Get Away Today or call 1-855-GET-AWAY, and be sure to mention you saw them on MousePlanet. Bard appears in Black Spire Outpost
I have been remiss in talking about just how great “Fire of the Rising Moons” is at Disneyland. This fireworks show debuted in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at the start of the Season of the Force promotion, and thankfully is not going anywhere when the celebration ends this week. In fact, last week Disneyland enhanced the nighttime show with the addition of a new R1 series astromech droid named Bard. The new droid alone isn’t worth a trip to the Black Spire Outpost, but “Fire of the Rising Moons” is absolutely worth your time.
The show takes advantage of the unique location of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in relation to Disneyland’s fireworks launch system to present a completely different show with a Star Wars soundtrack. When viewed from the Black Spire Spaceport, near the Millenium Falcon, you get a totally different perspective. The lower-level viewing area is small, and you’re likely to get whacked by a lightsaber if you’re not careful, so I prefer to watch from outside Docking Bay 7.
Bard is said to be the personal droid of Tohan Lege, the storyteller known as the Lore-weaver, who narrates the opening to “Fire of the Rising Moons.” We’re to understand that Lege stored his recorded memories into Bard, and that Bard is now replaying those memories. Bard doesn’t really do much during the show, but there are light and smoke effects synchronized to the score. The droid remains out during the daytime, so you can look for him the next time you’re on Batuu.

…The Hollywood Reporter last week wrote that a movie set inside Disneyland’s exclusive Club 33 is in the works. The script by Darren Lemke (“Goosebumps,” “Shazam!”) is reportedly “a murder-mystery, and the young detective who has “centers on a young aspiring detective who receives a mysterious invite to the highly secretive Club 33. In this case, it’s a magical and exclusive dining club whose members are the greatest and most iconic figures from across history. When a murder is committed on the premises, the patrons look to the young detective to solve it.” No release schedule was mentioned.

- Holidays at the Disneyland Resort – Begins November 15.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of October 11, 2023.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Purchase with purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced-price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.
Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you’re a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.

Military discounts are valid for stays most nights from January 2 through December 13, 2024. You can book now through December 10, 2024, and travel must be completed by December 14, 2024.
Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (833) 618-0536 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30% to 40% off, based on room category. Concierge rooms, Signature or Premium suites, or 2-or 3-Bedroom Villas are excluded from the offer, and this offer can not be combined with any other discount.
Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member, provided the spouse stays in one of the rooms booked.
