Disneyland Resort Update for May 6 – 12, 2019
News and Views
Fans snap up Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge reservations in under 2 hours
“Did you get a reservation?” “How many?” “When are you going?”
That was the conversation across social media Thursday morning, as hopeful fans snapped up thousands of free advance reservations to visit the new Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at the Disneyland Resort. The new land opens Friday, May 31, and Disney had previously announced that reservations—along with valid theme park admission—will be required to visit the land from opening day and June 23, 2019.
The reservation system put hopeful fans in a virtual queue for a chance to select a date and time to visit the new 14-acre themed land. Some fans waited up to two hours to pick their slot, or learn that the event had reached capacity. Disney kept specific details of this advance reservation process quiet until two hours before the reservations opened, possibly in an effort to deter would-be scammers from gaming the system.
Once through the virtual queue, each person with a valid Disneyland.com account could pick from a menu of available dates and times, and add up to five other people as guests to their reservation slot. Disney required the names of each guest, and stated they will check government-issued ID when each party arrives for their scheduled entry time.
While it was clear that Disney was being deliberately vague regarding some elements of the reservation system to deter fraud, the short notice and conflicting information presented through official Disney channels created unnecessary confusion for some would-be visitors.
Disneyland Resort hotel guests (who already received a reservation to visit Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge as a benefit of staying on property) received conflicting information about whether, when, or how they could make a second reservation to visit Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge before June 24. Several MousePlanet readers reported that they went ahead and made a second reservation, and hope to cancel their hotel reservation if doing so will not jeopardize their access to the new land.
Likewise, it is still unclear if people who made a reservation through their own Disney.com account and were also listed as guests on another person's reservation will in fact be able to visit the land more than once. Many MousePlanet readers reported that they are on two, three or more guest lists, as they and their friends all scrambled to secure reservations Thursday morning.
One reader said, “I booked a time to visit on June 1 because I couldn't get off work to go opening day. I did not know that two friends both added me to their reservations for May 31. I now have three reservations, two of which I can't use, and I'm afraid that I'll get turned away on June 1 because of those other two reservations.”
Disney has not responded to our requests for clarification on these situations.
While some fans may have too many reservations, others complain they couldn't add guests to theirs. The button to add a guest to a reservation appeared on the loading screen of the reservation system, before the user even selected a date and time, and was very easy to overlook, especially in the rush to secure a spot before the event reached capacity. Some users insist the “add a guest” button did not display at all due to a computer browser issue.
If you were not able to secure an advance reservation, there still is a way to ensure you can visit Batuu before June 24, but it will cost you. Visitors who book a night at a Disneyland Resort Hotel between May 31 and June 23 still receive a “designated reservation to access Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge during their stay.”
At press time, rooms were still available at two of the Disneyland Resort hotels for May 31, starting at $900 per room. If you're willing to wait a few days, we found rooms for $500 at the Paradise Pier Hotel for June 6.
Hotel inventory is likely to fluctuate wildly over the next few weeks as visitors make or cancel their reservations, so it's definitely worth checking back frequently if you don't find a rate and date that works best for you. We also recommend using a travel agent, like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today to help you find the lowest rate.
Grad Nites begin this week
The first Grad Nite of the 2019 season is this Wednesday, May 10. If you're planning a visit during this period, be sure to consult the schedule of Grad Nite dates so you can plan appropriately. For 2019, Grad Nite is held on May 10, 11, 17, 18, 21, 22, 28, 29, and 31; June 4, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12, and 14
For 2019, the event includes park-hopper access to both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks during regular operating hours, and a private party in Disney California Adventure from 10:00 pm. to 2:00 am. after that park closes to “day guests.”
Schools can choose to arrive whenever they wish during their Grad Nite event. Some arrive right at park opening to maximize their time, while others arrive later due to travel time or other activities. With the Mickey and Friends parking structure now closed to oversize vehicles like school buses, look for heavier arrival traffic in the Toy Story parking lot.
Based on reports since the event switched to this format in 2014, the parks grow increasingly crowded as the day goes on and more students arrive. Grad Nites are often a good excuse to leave the theme parks early to enjoy a nice dinner in Downtown Disney.
Beware: Formal Grad Nites are not the only times that the Disneyland Resort is crowded with student groups. The last weeks of school are popular times for class trips, something that Disney actively encourages through special pricing and activities for school groups. Those visits won't appear on any calendar, but are a fact of Disney life during this season, and have already begun making a noticeable impact on park attendance in recent weeks.
With so many schools on year-round calendars now, you should consider the period between March and mid-June as one big, hazy spring-break-into-graduation season. So while the Grad Nite calendar can give you an idea of when the most high school seniors will be on property, there is no way to know when a school district from Central California is sending its ninth graders for their own promotion celebration.
Mother's Day 2019
Mother's Day is this Sunday, May 12, and there are several ways to celebrate with mom at the Disneyland Resort.
Steakhouse 55 at the Disneyland Hotel serves breakfast from 7:00 to 10:30 a.m., and reservations for Mother's Day were still open at press time. The menu includes classic brunch dishes like Eggs Benedict, made-to-order omelets, chicken and waffles, and French toast, with a full bar for morning mimosas.
Three Disneyland Resort Hotel restaurants will host special buffets on Mother's Day Sunday:
- Storytellers Cafe at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel – brunch buffet served from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and dinner buffet served 2:00 until 10:00 p.m.
- PCH Grill at the Paradise Pier hotel – brunch buffet served from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and dinner served until 9:00 p.m.
- Goofy's Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel – brunch buffet served from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and dinner served until 9:00 p.m.
You can also splurge on the new $125-per-person Disney Princess Breakfast Adventures at the Napa Rose restaurant at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel.
Limited reservations are still available for all of these options via the Disneyland website, or by calling (714) 781-3463.
Catal restaurant in Downtown Disney offers a prix fixe Mother's Day menu from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. You can read the full menu and make reservations on their website. The three-course meal is $50 per adult and $14 per child ages 3 to 10. Bottomless mimosas are $15.
Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen also serves up a special Mother's Day Brunch menu from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in addition to its regular selections, as well as dinner specials from 3:00 to 10:00 p.m. View details and make reservations from their website.
Come CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanetRegistration is now officially open for the 2019 CHOC Walk in the Park, to be held Sunday, August 11 at the Disneyland Resort. Team MousePlanet will return for our 12th consecutive walk to support Children's Hospital Orange County. Thanks to the efforts and generosity of our readers, Team MousePlanet has raised over $75,000 for CHOC since 2008. We invite MousePlanet readers, friends, and family members to join our team for the event. When you register for the event, you can opt to donate directly or fund-raise the registration fee.
Why Join Team MousePlanet? COMMUNITY! Walking with Team MousePlanet is a great way to spend a morning with MousePlanet staff and readers, all while raising money for a great cause. Stay after the walk and enjoy Disneyland with your fellow Disney fans. CONVENIENCE! If you register during Early registration and meet your fundraising goal, Team MousePlanet will handle check-in for you. No need to drive to check in the week before the walk to collect your wristband and T-shirt. You need only meet us in Downtown Disney the morning of the walk to collect your goodies, then head right into Disneyland to start the walk. If you prefer to have your shirt and wristband before the walk (some people like to personalize them), there is an option to have those items shipped to you. The deadline to join Team MousePlanet and meet the $85 fundraising requirement in order for us to handle check-in for walkers is Monday, August 5. We still welcome those who register after this date, but they must handle their own check-in. In addition to helping support an outstanding local charity, one of the benefits of participating in the CHOC Walk is the opportunity to purchase specially priced Disneyland tickets to use in the weeks after the walk. CHOC has not yet announced the dates or details this promotion for 2018; we will share details as soon as we know them. Are you ready to CHOC Walk with Team MousePlanet? It's easy to sign up—just visit our team page. |

- Coming Soon! When we know, you'll know!
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of January 6, 2019.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.
The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next eight to 11 months.
