Holiday parade taping this week
The Disneyland portions of the 2017 Disney holiday specials will be taped this Monday and Tuesday, November 13 & 14. Locations in both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure at which visitors may spot musical performances include Main Street, in front of “it's a small world,” and in Cars Land. The taping includes a special performance of “A Christmas Fantasy Parade” at 11:30 a.m. today, Monday, November 13.
Footage of these performances will be used for multiple Disney specials announced last week. Paid subscribers of the DisneyNOW app can start watching The Disney Channel stream “Disney Parks Presents a Disney Channel Holiday Celebration” starting Friday, November 24. The show will then air on Disney Channel on Friday, December 1.
“The Wonderful World of Disney: Magical Holiday Celebration” airs on ABC on Thursday, November 30. And of course, the “Disney Parks Magical Christmas Celebration” airs on ABC on Christmas morning. Check local listings for broadcast details in your area.
2017 Candy Cane schedule
Disneyland candy canes were once one of those little Disney gems, known to only a small group of fans. Social media helped spread the word, but it was a Food Network special that really made these scratch-made treats famous. In 2014, Disney expanded the offering to Trolley Treats, and doubled the number of days they are available.
Whether it's the deceptively simple recipe (the candy canes made in-park contain no preservatives) or just the charm of watching candy makers cook, pull, and shape the canes in front of you, people will eschew the readily available premade canes and wait hours to get one fresh from the kitchen. Candy makers work in a hot, humid room to produce up to three batches a day, guarding against stray grains of sugar that can cause a batch to crystallize and be ruined.
Once cooled, the canes are sheathed in plastic and wrapped in bubble wrap, and sold to a crowd of eager customers. Disney now issues wristbands at the candy location on candy cane days; plan to get there at park opening to snag one. Each color-coded wristband corresponds to a batch. If you don't want to watch the candies being made, managers will tell you when to come back to claim your treat. In all cases, you must return by the time specified by the location, after which unclaimed candy canes are sold on a first-come, first-serve basis.
No discounts apply, and there is a limit of two candy canes per person. Disney says that “All candy canes sold will be made fresh at the Disneyland Resort.”

- Disneyland Candy Palace – November 24, 29; December 1, 4, 6, 8, 11, 13, 15, 18, 20, 24
- Disney California Adventure Trolley Treats – November 25, 28; December 2, 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 16, 21, 25
Annual Passholder Sip and Savor Pass
Disney California Adventure's Festival of Holidays returns for 2017, with over 60 different food and drink selections to choose from. Though none of the Marketplaces offer a discount to annual passholders, APs can again purchase the “Sip and Savor Pass” for $45.
The passport provides eight tasting portions of select food and beverage items from 11 participating Festival Marketplace stalls. All food items and non-alcoholic beverages from those stalls are included, with the lone exception of a non-alcoholic ginger beer.
The passport itself is a plastic credential with eight snap-off tabs, strung on a lanyard printed with an AP logo. Purchase the passport at the AP Corner at Sonoma Terrace.

As always, you have to really pay attention to get the best value from this pass. The average price of the items you can purchase with this pass is $5.70, just over $45 for eight items. However, sales tax is not applied to the price of the lanyard, but is to the food items, so you also get an 8 percent advantage when you use the pass because you won't pay sales tax when you use them.
If you use all eight tabs to purchase one each of the eight most expensive items at the Festival, at best you save $17.50 (plus tax) compared to paying cash. However, every $4.50 dessert or beverage you buy with a tab eats into that savings.
To sweeten the deal, Disney has designed a series of one-inch buttons with the “AP” logo in varying color combinations. You receive one of the buttons each time you redeem a tab, and so can collect a series of eight when you redeem the whole pass.

Once again, our advice is to decide what dishes you're interested in trying, and then crunch the numbers to decide if this is a good deal for you. To get the most value from the pass, you need to be prepared to pay for less-expensive items separately, which will raise your overall spending.
If you really, really want the lanyard and pin series, but don't think you can eat enough of the braised lamb cheeks with Mediterranean cauliflower rice to make financial sense, consider buying one lanyard for your family or friends group, and use the tabs only for the big-ticket dishes.
The Sip and Savor Pass is valid for the entire festival, so you can use it to try new dishes throughout the event. However, be sure to pay attention to the block out dates on your pass, so you use up all of the tabs before your holiday blockout period begins.

Nearly three years after a multi-state outbreak of measles was traced to a Disneyland visitor, the Disneyland Resort and the city of Anaheim are facing another outbreak. Two cooling towers at Disneyland park remain closed pending the results of laboratory testing, after nine cases of Legionnaires' disease were diagnosed in people who visited the theme park in September. Another three people who visited Anaheim but not the Disneyland Resort also contracted the disease. One of those three died, but reports indicate the deceased had other medical complications.
News outlets Saturday reported that Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA) alerted Disney to the outbreak in October, and the company discovered the bacteria that causes Legionnaires' disease were present in two water cooling towers in Disneyland. The Mayo Clinic website says that Legionnaires' disease is not spread from person-to-person contact, but from inhaling the legionella bacteria. Cooling towers used in air conditioning systems have been linked in other Legionnaires' outbreaks.
KTLA reports Disney shut down the two infected towers on November 1, and that the towers will remain offline until tests confirm they are free from the bacteria. The Los Angeles Times quotes Orange County Health Care Agency officials as saying there is “There is no known ongoing risk associated with this outbreak,” and that no additional cases have been linked to Anaheim or to Disneyland since September.

runDisney bids farewell (for now?) to Anaheim
runDisney hosted its final scheduled half marathon at the Disneyland Resort this Sunday, with nearly 7,000 runners taking to the streets to compete in the Super Heroes Half Marathon. Another 8,000 runners completed the Thor 10K the previous day. Over 3,000 runners finished both events as part of the Infinity Gauntlet Challenge. This race weekend had the lowest registration of recent runDisney events, but most of the runners we spoke with were excited for the chance to complete one final run through Anaheim. runDisney recently announced a hiatus of all West Coast events for at least two years, citing construction around the Disneyland Resort as the reason they events can not be held as scheduled.

runDisney has given no indication of what plans it hold for the Disneyland Resort beyond 2019, so we'll just have to wait along with the rest of you to find out when or if Disney-style running returns to California. Until then, thank you to all of the volunteers who have helped staff our cheer stations these past five years, and especially to all of the runners who make getting up at 3:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning so very worth the effort. We hope to see you in 2020.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

2017 Military Salute Offer Disney released details of its 2017 Military Salute offer for Disneyland and Walt Disney World last October, and the tickets are valid January 1 through April 8 and April 24 through December 19, 2017. At the time we first shared details of the offer, we did not know about (or Disney had not announced) a special PhotoPass promotion also available to military personnel. Through December 19, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel who are eligible for the Military Salute offer can also purchase the Disney PhotoPass Collection for $49, a discount of 50% over the usual $99 price. The Disney PhotoPass Collection includes digital downloads of all available PhotoPass photos linked to your account, a voucher for a dining print package and a Disneyland Resort Gallery Disc with 350 high-resolution professional photos from around Disneyland Resort. Southern California CityPASS ($346/$314) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2017. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $42/$34. Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you pre-purchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco. Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – These package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants. The Disneyland website does not list the blockout dates for the Costco-exclusive Disney California Adventure Park Fun Pass. The blockout dates are as follows:
