Christmas parade taping this Wednesday
The Disneyland portion of “The Disney Parks' Magical Christmas Celebration” TV special (scheduled to air on ABC on December 25 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Eastern) is scheduled to be shot this Wednesday, November 16 on Main Street, U.S.A. According to the official Times Guide distributed to park visitors, the performance times are 10:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
Based on past years experience, Disneyland visitors who want to appear in the background of the filming should be prepared to arrive at park opening, and wait. Sections—possibly an entire block or more—of Main Street may be roped off for cast members or other pre-selected audience members. You stand a much better chance of being selected to stay in the background if you're dressed for the season in holiday attire with colorful accessories. Bring sunblock and water, and consider a sun hat (which you'll remove before the cameras roll, of course).
We never recommend that anyone make a trip just to see the filming, but if you're going to go, make the best of it and be prepared for long waits in our unseasonably warm “fall” weather.
2016 Candy Cane schedule
Disneyland candy canes were once one of those little Disney gems, known to only a small group of fans. Social media helped spread the word, but it was a Food Network special that really made these scratch-made treats famous. In 2014, Disney expanded the offering to Trolley Treats, and doubled the number of days they are available.
Whether it's the deceptively simple recipe (the canes made in-park contain no preservatives) or just the charm of watching candy makers cook, pull, and shape the canes in front of you, people will eschew the readily available premade canes and wait hours to get one fresh from the kitchen. Candy makers work in a hot, humid room to produce up to three batches a day, guarding against stray grains of sugar that can cause a batch to crystallize and be ruined.
Once cooled, the canes are sheathed in plastic and wrapped in bubble wrap, and sold for $12.99 to a crowd of eager customers. Disney now issues wristbands at the candy location on candy cane days; plan to get there at park opening to snag one. Each color-coded wristband corresponds to a batch. If you don't want to watch the candies being made, managers will tell you when to come back to claim your treat. In all cases, you must return by 4:00 p.m., after which unclaimed candy canes are sold on a first-come, first-serve basis.
No discounts apply, and there is a limit of two candy canes per person. Disney says that “All candy canes sold will be made fresh at the Disneyland Resort.”

Arciniaga wins 4th Disney event; smashes course record
Fountain Valley native Nick Arciniaga claimed his fourth first-place finish during Sunday's Super Heroes Half Marathon, and in the process, set a new course record. Arciniaga finished in 1:09:28, more than five minutes ahead of second-place finisher Robert Coslick. Prior to this, Arciniaga won the 2014 Disneyland Half Marathon, as well as the 2015 and 2016 Star Wars half marathons.
The first female finisher was Lindsey Carter, with a time of 1:25:01, followed closely by Beth Woodward and Jennifer Lucas.
Paralympian Brian Siemann competed in Rio this summer, and took the top spot in the men's wheelchair division in both the 10K and half marathon this weekend.
We offer our congratulations to the estimated 25,000 runners and walkers who completed this weekend's events. Results for the 10K, half marathon and Infinity Gauntlet Challenge are now available on the runDisney website.

The next runDisney weekend in Anaheim is just two months away, with the Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend, January 12 to 15, 2017. That event includes the Star Wars 5K, 10K and half marathon, the Rebel Challenge and the runDisney Kids Races. Registration is still open for the 10K and half marathon distances through the runDisney website.

How to access your race photos in Disney Photopass
In a change that went into effect earlier this year, runDisney race photos are now taken by Disney PhotoPass cast members and are available through that program after the event. If you are an annual passholder with a pass that qualifies you for free PhotoPass photos, that means yours are now free.
If you don't have an annual pass, you can purchase race photos through the PhotoPass program, including any bundle purchases that will include other photos taken on your trip to the parks.
To add the photos to your PhotoPass account, you will need the race-specific codes provided by runDisney. They are listed in the Event Guide, shared on social media by the runDisney team, and for this weekend's event were even printed on the race bibs. The codes for the 2016 Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend events are as follows:
- Kids Races – 2016-HERO-KIDX–XXXX
- 5K – 2016-HERO-S5KX–XXXX
- 10K – 2016-HERO-10KX–XXXX
- Half Marathon – 2016-HERO-HLFX–XXXX
For example, the codes for this past weekend's Star Wars Dark Side 10K and half marathon are 2016-DARK-10KX–XXXX and 2016-HLFX–XXXX, respectively. Participants replace the final five places (shown as X) with their bib number(s).
If you are a Disneyland annual passholder, log into your passholder account on Disneyland.com, then select “Disney PhotoPass” from the “Annual Passports” tab. Use the “Link Photos” tool to add your codes and view your photos.
If you are not a passholder, you can visit disneyphotopass.com to view photos and purchase packages.
Grand Californian pools closing for Spring refurbishment
A MousePlanet reader shared a letter she received last week from Disney regarding her upcoming vacation reservation at the Grand Californian Hotel. According to the letter, all three of the pools at the hotel will be closed for refurbishment starting on January 3, 2017 and will not reopen until sometime in spring 2017. The closure impacts the Redwood Pool and water slide, the Fountain Pool, and the Mariposa Pool. The cabanas will also close during this time.
The closure is not currently listed on the hotel's website.
During the refurbishment, which is expected to last at least through March, people staying at the Grand Californian Hotel can use the pool facilities at the Disneyland Hotel or Paradise Pier Hotel.
Readers Lisa and Julia shared some holiday events at local Southern California theme parks that are worth mentioning, especially if you're a Disneyland passholder looking for something new to explore during the upcoming holiday blockout dates. Knott's Merry Farm
From November 19 through January 8, Knott's Merry Farm offers live holiday entertainment, a Christmas Crafts Village and Santa's Christmas Cabin; the Merry Christmas, Snoopy! ice show and a brand-new Peanuts stage show; and the nightly Calico tree lighting ceremony and Snow in Ghost Town moment.
Knott's has an interesting holiday gift strategy this year, in which you can purchase a 2017 season pass and receive one admission to Knott's Merry Farm in 2016. That's a very attractive option for families, especially with season passes starting at $90 per person.

…The construction of the new security checkpoints in Downtown Disney is the reason there is no skating rink or Winter Village in the shopping district this year. The construction is expected to be complete, and the new checkpoints open, before Christmas.
…The Hyperspace Mountain overlay has returned, following the removal of the Ghost Galaxy Halloween overlay.
…A new “campground” scene is being added to the Autopia, according to permits filed by Disney. The scene will include new props, a steel water tower, an all-terrain vehicle, and faux trees.
..Darth Vader is again the “Officer on the Bridge” in the Star Wars Launch Bay. Kylo Ren is no longer available for meet-and-greets at this time.

- “Use it or lose it” weekend – January 28–29, 2017. Our designation for the final weekend of January, which marks the deadline for cast members, community groups, and Club 33 members to use their remaining complementary admission tickets from the 2016 allocation.
- Dapper Day Spring Outing to Disneyland (unofficial event) – Sunday, April 23. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
- 2017 Grad Nites: May 5, 6, 10, 17, 19, 20, 24, 30 and 31; June 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 10, 14, 16 and 17.
- 2017 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – May 11–14, 2017. Registration opens September 20, 2016.

- Dapper Day Fall Outing to Disneyland (unofficial event) – Sunday, November 5. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Disney California Adventure Park Fun Pass Technically not an annual pass, this Costco-exclusive is valid only at Disney California Adventure for 365 days after activation. The pass costs $329.99, the same price as the existing Disney Southern California Select Passport that also includes admission to Disneyland. The new Costco pass comes with 19 blockout dates during the remainder of 2016, and 41 blockout dates through December 1, 2017. Those 60 combined blockout dates most closely resemble those of the existing Deluxe Annual Passport, and cover the peak Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year travel periods, plus most holiday weekends and every Saturday between March 13 and August 19. 2016 – 2017 blockout dates:
The Disney California Adventure Park Fun Pass also includes the same 10 percent merchandise and food discount as offered with the Southern California Select Passport. Like that pass, the new DCA pass does not include parking, nor is there an option to add a parking pass onto this ticket. The new Fun Pass also includes a Disney collector pin featuring Ariel and the DCA logo. If you're looking to buy this as a holiday gift, note that the pass expires one year after the first use, and the first use must be by December 1, 2016. That doesn't necessarily rule it out as a stocking stuffer, but Christmas will have to come very early so your recipient can activate the pass before the deadline. The pass is available only at Costco stores and from Costco.com. This is not a member-exclusive item, and in our test, the Costco website did not add a surcharge when the pass was purchased by a non-member. The pass is mailed in five to seven business days, though a two-day shipping option is available at an added charge. California residents can take advantage of the monthly payment plan when purchasing any but the Premier Annual Passport.

Southern California CityPASS |
2016 Southern California CityPASS ($329/$294) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2016. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $38/$30. This upgraded pass is only available for purchase directly from the CityPASS website. You can also upgrade your CityPASS to add more days at participating locations:

These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation).
