Two holidays passing in the night | Entertainment notes | Candlelight rumors | It's time to make dinner (reservations) | Ghirardelli pop-up shop to open in Downtown Disney | This and that… | Crowd Forecast
Two holidays passing in the night
This week marks the start of the holiday transition for the Disneyland Resort, as holiday garland replaces fall foliage around the parks, and a Christmas tree replaces the great Mickey pumpkin in Town Square. In reality, the holiday swap began even earlier than this—the Downtown Disney Christmas Tree and the start of the Winter Village were installed last week, and Mickey's Halloween Party guests trick-or-treated past winter garland in Toontown Saturday night.
Space Mountain is closed through November 15 to remove the Ghost Galaxy overlay, and install the HyperSpace Mountain overlay for the Star Wars Season of the Force promotion. The Jungle Cruise is also closed through November 12 to install the Jingle Cruise overlay, while “it's a small world” wraps up its holiday transformation.

Entertainment notes
This weekend, November 6–8, is when Disney is expected to film the West Coast portions of the Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade. The performances are usually taped on Friday and Saturday, with Sunday reserved as a back-up day in case of weather. Filming is always subject to change without notice; do not make a special trip just to see the filming.
We have confirmed with Disney that this will be the entertainment schedule presented nightly during the Thanksgiving peak week, November 21 – 28, 2015:
Disneyland | “A Christmas Fantasy” Parade | 1:00 and 3:15 p.m. |
---|---|---|
Paint the Night parade | 5:45 and 10:45 p.m. | |
Disneyland Forever fireworks | 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. | |
Fantasmic! | 9:00 and 10:45 p.m. | |
Disney California Adventure | Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular | 12:25, 2:05, 4:40, and 6:05 p.m. |
Buena Vista Street holiday tree lighting | 5:00 p.m. | |
Pixar Play Parade | 5:45 p.m. | |
Diamond Mad T Party | 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. (opens at 6:00 p.m. on November 28) | |
World of Color – Winter Dreams | 9:00 p.m. | |
World of Color – Celebrate! | 10:15 p.m. |
Visitors will be able to choose whether to get a Fastpass for World of Color – Winter Dreams or the 60th anniversary Celebrate! version.
If this extended entertainment schedule produces the results Disney managers hope for, expect to see a repeat during the two peak weeks of the Christmas tourist season.
Candlelight rumors
If the (reliably sourced) rumors are true, Disneyland's 2015 Candlelight Processional will be narrated on Saturday, December 5 by actress Geena Davis, and on Sunday, December 6 by Once Upon a Time actress Lana Parrilla.
Davis has narrated the Candlelight Processional at Epcot, but this would be her first time behind the podium at Disneyland. This would be Parrilla's first time to narrate the show at either Disney resort.
Sources tell us the show has been revamped for this year, with new songs and arrangements. The performances are at 5:30 and 7:45 each night.
Correction: An earlier version of this article stated that the first performance of the Paint the Night parade would take place between the two Candlelight shows each night. The correct parade times are 8:50 p.m. and 10:45 p.m., with the first parade stepping off from “it's a small world.”
Disney has not yet made any official announcements regarding the 2015 Candlelight event, and everything should be considered rumor until confirmed.
It's time to make dinner (reservations)
As of yesterday, Disneyland Resort dining reservations are open for the remainder of 2015. If you haven't already booked meals for your upcoming holiday trip(s), this is a good week to get everything nailed down before holiday fever sets in. Here are some key dates to keep in mind:
Thanksgiving | If you haven't already made reservations, your options now are to book a table at Naples Restaurant or Tortilla Jo's in Downtown Disney, or plan to find a meal at a counter-service location. |
---|---|
Candlelight weekend (December 5-6) | There are quite a few options left for both very early (pre-show) or late (post-show) dinners, with reservations still available at Blue Bayou, Carthay Circle, Napa Rose, and more. However, these tables will vanish as soon as Disney confirms the names of the celebrity narrators, so we advise you to book ASAP if your Candlelight tradition includes dinner and a show. Remember the performances are at 5:30 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. each night. |
Christmas Eve | There were a surprising number of openings (as of Sunday) for Christmas Eve, though you'll likely eat earlier or later than usual. If you're willing to sit down before 5:00 p.m., you can get a table at almost any restaurant in either theme park, including the Blue Bayou and Carthay Circle. Likewise, almost every location has openings after 8:00 p.m. |
Christmas Day | The choices are more limited for Christmas Day, but there are still plenty of options if you're willing to be flexible in regard to time or cuisine. Of course, your selection diminishes with each passing hour, so don't let this fool you; Christmas reservations have only been open a week, and locals still aren't in the Walt Disney World mind set of needing to book reservations as soon as they open. With Halloween in the rear view mirror, the focus will turn to the winter holidays, so you want to be ahead of that pack. |
New Year's Eve |
Dining reservations opened Sunday, and Ariel's Grotto and Carthay Circle are already booked out for the night (including the World of Color package). The Blue Bayou had just a few spots left as of Sunday, though all of the Fantasmic packages were booked. Restaurants with better dinner availability include Carnation Cafe, Cafe Orleans, and Wine Country Trattoria. If you're willing to leave the parks in search of a nice meal, Steakhouse 55 is a good option. Big Thunder Ranch BBQ has openings during the day, but you should have a Plan B in case El Niño rains you out. |
Ghirardelli pop-up shop to open in Downtown Disney
After Apricot Lane closed in Downtown Disney in January, the space was divided into two units, with Disney Vacation Club taking half of the space. It's long been rumored/expected that Starbucks would use the other space to open a second location the company said would be built in Downtown Disney, but there's been no visible progress on the space.
This vacant space in Downtown Disney will become a Ghirardelli pop-up shop during the holiday season. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
Last week, we learned that Ghirardelli will open a pop-up chocolate shop in that space. The shop opens sometime this week, and will remain open into January. This is a chocolate shop only—not a soda fountain ice cream outlet. It's still unclear whether this location will eventually become the second Starbucks, or if that plan has been scrapped.
This and that…
…Soarin' Over California is closed through November 12 for refubishment. This was a last-minute addition to the schedule.
The sign for the Star Wars Launch Bay is in place outside the Tomorrowland Expo Center, formerly known as Innoventions. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
…A new bridge structure appeared in New Orleans Square last week, and is generating a lot of buzz and speculation. The structure, dubbed by some as the “bridge to nowhere,” is near the Mint Julep Bar on the back side of the French Market restaurant, and spans the walkway known as Front Street. On one side, it connects to an employee access staircase on the side of the French Market building. On the other side, it currently leads to the New Orleans Square Railroad station platform.
A new bridge in New Orleans Square connects the French Market building with the railroad station. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
It's unclear whether the bridge will be extended to span the Disneyland Railroad tracks. At its current height, the bridge is too low for trains to pass under it. This has led to speculation that the bridge would be expanded once the Disneyland Railroad closes for the track change announced to be part of the Star Wars Land construction.
Still, that doesn't explain the need for a bridge over the railroad tracks, or over Front Street, for that matter, unless the tracks and/or Front Street will become impassable in the near future.
The new bridge may be extended to span the Disneyland Railroad tracks, but for now it just crosses Front Street. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
Most visitors do not realize that there is a gate behind the New Orleans Square train station, providing a passage between New Orleans Square and the many offices and buildings located “outside the berm” of the railroad tracks. Hundreds of cast members use that gate during their normal day, and even more use it after park hours. A bridge makes sense if there is some reason cast members would not be able to access that gate, but so far we haven't heard of any plans that so dramatically impact either Front Street or the New Orleans Square station.
…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We'll also include a fun MouseAdventure bonus, such as an Eye Spy or a trivia question. To subscribe to our free newsletter, just enter your e-mail in the box below.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
School Holidays
Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2015
- Thanksgiving Break – November 23–27. Many local schools close for the entire week of Thanksgiving.
- Winter Break – December 21, 2015 – January 8, 2016. Most local schools are closed.
2016
- Spring Break(s) – March 14 – April 8. Most local schools are closed one week during this period. Expect the majority of school closures—and crowds—the weeks immediately before and after Easter Sunday, March 27.
- Local School Holiday – Monday, March 28. Most local schools not already on Spring Break will be closed for Cesar Chavez Day.
- Nevada Day (observed) – Friday, October 28. A school holiday for our neighbors to the northeast creates a 3-day weekend and usually adds to the Halloween weekend crowds. Some Nevada schools take the entire week off as a Fall Break.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 20–21. Expect holiday-level crowds October 19–24 as Utah students and families take advantage of a Fall Break scheduled around an annual state education convention. Not all Utah schools close for UEA, but the impact on the resort is significant enough to mention.
- Thanksgiving Break – November 21–25. Many local schools close for the entire week of Thanksgiving.
- Winter Break – December 19, 2016 – January 6, 2017. Most schools close only two of these three weeks, but some districts close all three weeks due to the Saturday Christmas.

Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of October 4, 2015.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
