Disneyland Resort Update for November 23 – 29, 2020

Orange County subject to new COVID-19 restrictions
Last week, California governor Gavin Newsom placed 40 California counties into more restrictive tiers of California's Blueprint for a Safer Economy, with all Southern California counties placed in the purple, or most-restrictive tier.
This infographic shows the modifications businesses must make now that Orange County has reentered the purple tier of COVID-19 restrictions. Image courtesy state of California.
This step back means that some Downtown Disney businesses are forced to modify their operations. While Orange County was in the red tier of the state's system, restaurants were permitted to open their dining rooms at 25% capacity, and retail stores could operate at 50% capacity. Now, indoor dining is once again prohibited in the county, and retail stores are limited to operating at 25% of capacity.
On Saturday, Newsom also issued a limited Stay-at-Home Order for all counties in the purple tier, enacting a curfew on non-essential work and gatherings between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. The curfew is in effect through December 21, 2020, but shouldn't impact Downtown Disney operations, as the shopping district closes at 9:00 p.m.
Hotels in purple tier counties are permitted to operate with safety modifications, and Disney hasn't said whether this development will have any impact on the planned reopening of the Disney Vacation Club Villas at the Grand Californian Hotel on Sunday, December 6, 2020.
Downtown Disney featuring Buena Vista Street draws massive crowds
The expansion of Downtown Disney into a portion of Disney California Adventure's Buena Vista Street drew thousands of fans to the shopping district Thursday morning to get their first look inside an Anaheim theme park in nearly nine months. MousePlanet had an opportunity to preview Buena Vista Street on Wednesday to get an idea of the operational changes, and shared our tips in What to Expect as Buena Vista Street Reopens. We were back Thursday morning to experience the grand reopening to see how it all worked once actual guests entered the gates.
The first visitors arrived well before 5:00 a.m. Thursday morning. More than an hour before Downtown Disney even opened, the line to enter the resort from the Harbor Boulevard entrance had snaked through the bus arrival lot and looped onto the bus way along the side of California Adventure. While physical distancing of six feet between groups caused the crowd to look much larger than it might otherwise appear, there were still thousands of people waiting for the gates to open.

The scene was repeated at the west entrance to Downtown Disney, where the Simba parking lot opened earlier than announced to accommodate the waiting crowds. At both entrances, cast members were on hand to remind visitors to maintain distance from one another, and physical distancing markers were in place throughout the queue. However, it seemed that there were far more people waiting at the Harbor entrance, likely due to some getting a ride to the resort instead of parking and paying the new $10 fee at the Simba lot.
That strategy didn't seem to pay off on Thursday; people who joined the Harbor entrance line more than an hour before the Simba parking lot even opened, were quite far back in the merged entrance line, and had to join the virtual queue. If there's a long line at Harbor, it's probably worth using the west entrance.

Once the security checkpoints opened, there was a rush as visitors made a beeline to get in line for Buena Vista Street. The land reached capacity in about 15 minutes, and new arrivals were directed to a queue set up in the main entrance esplanade. When even that holding area reached capacity, Disney activated an updated virtual queue system. Visitors scanned a QR code posted on signs around the esplanade to join the virtual queue, and then received an alert when it was their turn to enter Buena Vista Street.

Cast members were on hand to help visitors who could not use the QR code or had other problems with the system. One nice thing about this new system is that it shows how many groups are ahead of you, which at least gives you some indication of how long the wait could be. When we tested the system, it showed more than 600 parties ahead of us, and offered the option for us to cancel our registration if we didn't want to wait. Disney closed the virtual queue on Thursday when the number of groups waiting exceeded the number who could be accommodated in the area before it closed for the night.

We were fortunate to have made it into the standby line for Buena Vista Street before the virtual queue system was deployed, and only waited about 30 minutes before entering the park. Once inside, we were struck by how uncrowded the area was. Disney was clearly limiting capacity to prevent any sort of long lines from forming inside the land, and there was plenty of space to maneuver. Cast members kept careful tabs on the capacity of each shop, and monitored the lines outside the stores to maintain physical distancing. Two of the quick-service restaurants—Award Wieners and Smokejumpers Grill—encourage customers to use the mobile order feature of the Disneyland mobile app, and there was barely a line at either location.

The most anticipated dining option in the expanded Downtown Disney is the Carthay Circle Lounge, which now boasts an expanded “alfresco dining” area that takes up much of the Disney Theater queue. At this time, the location doesn't accept reservations, and uses a virtual queue. The restaurant doesn't open until 11:30 a.m., but the virtual queue opens with the parks. Managers outside the restaurant accept registrations until the first seating is filled, and advise anyone who missed out to check back later when the second “wave” of seating opens. The second wave opens around the time the first seating begins at 11:30 a.m., with each subsequent wave opening every 60 to 90 minutes depending on table turn.

At least on opening day, the virtual queue system seemed not especially efficient, as it encourages people to hang out on Buena Vista Street far longer than they might otherwise just to get a chance at joining the virtual queue. We wonder how long it will take Disney to make adjustments to the system, or just start accepting reservations.
The good news is that once you're in the virtual queue for Carthay Circle Lounge, you can leave Buena Vista Street and visit the rest of Downtown Disney if you want. When you are called to return to the restaurant, you can skip whatever line may be outside Buena Vista Street and enter immediately.
Buena Vista Street is basically a tiny but well-themed mall in its current incarnation, featuring four shops and four restaurants. Without the famous Disney characters and entertainment, there's not much to compel a long stay. Still, we've heard from travel agents whose clients are coming to Anaheim just to visit Buena Vista Street, and it's clear from the opening weekend crowds that this offering has been incredibly popular. Disney has repeatedly sent out messages this weekend advising that Downtown Disney is very busy, and that entry to the shopping district and parking lot will be suspended at times to help limit crowds.
With the line to enter Buena Vista Street already several hours long, many shoppers opted to check out the World of Disney store while they waited. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

If you'd like to see Downtown Disney featuring Buena Vista Street for yourself, our advice is to let the first crush settle down by waiting two weeks to visit. We've always considered the week after Thanksgiving to be the most wonderful week of the year to visit the Disneyland Resort, with the lowest crowds of the holiday season. We expect the same to hold true even during this pandemic year, so maybe take a weekday to call out sick from your home office and make your holiday pilgrimage to Downtown Disney.

On a personal note, I became involved with the CHOC Walk over 20 years ago, long before I was a parent. In the years since, I have gone from being a volunteer to serving at various times as a team captain, a prize sponsor and a media partner.
Now I'm a CHOC parent. This time it's personal. You can read more about my CHOC journey on my event website.
Also keep watching for ways to support Team MousePlanet through eBay for Charity auctions. We will be listing items received from press events, with 100% of the proceeds going directly to CHOC.

- 2022 D23 Expo – September 9-11, 2022 at the Anaheim Convention Center
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of January 6, 2019.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

The Southern California Resident Ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure up to three times between January 7 and May 21, 2020.
You can use every day of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit different parks on different days, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $199 for ages 3 and up, a $20 increase over the 2019 offer.
For an additional $55, you can also upgrade the ticket to a park-hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, and which is a savings of up to $101 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket.
Although you can purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths on the day of your visit, you will save time and receive one Magic Morning admission when you purchase in advance from MousePlanet partner Get Away Today. You can also purchase by calling (714) 781-4636, or by going online at Disneyland.com.
The Magic Morning offer does not apply to tickets purchased on-site. If purchasing from another third party ticket outlet, double-check that their three-day tickets come with this feature.

You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 18, 2020. Tickets expire on May 21, 2020, and unlike past years, do not have a spring blockout period. However, we estimate the peak Spring Break crowds will arrive April 5–12, 2020. so plan your visits accordingly.
Disney states that proof of residency is required for purchase and admission, and each resident can purchase up to five tickets per day.
Special Ticket Offer for Kids Everywhere
If you do not live in the qualifying ZIP codes for the Southern California Resident Ticket described above, Disney has another offer valid for travel on the same dates – but this one is only for children ages 3-9. This ticket also comes with a 13-day fuse, so plan your visits accordingly.
The Child Ticket Offer is also valid for travel January 7 through May 21, 2020. The price is $199 for ages 3-9, and each ticket includes one Magic Morning entry when purchased in advance from Get Away Today, calling (714) 781-4636, or online at Disneyland.com.
Duration | One Park Per Day | Park Hopper |

- Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $184 each (an increase of $6 from the 2019 offer)
- Disney Military Promotional 4-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $204 each (an increase of $6 from the 2019 offer)
Disneyland tickets may be used January 1 through December 18, 2020, excluding the spring break blockout of April 5–12, 2020.
Active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets for themselves and up to five additional family members or friends. No more than six Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or spouse) pursuant to this offer. All tickets and options are non-transferable and must be used by December 18, 2020.
2020 Hotel discounts
Military discounts are valid for stays most nights from January 1 through December 19, 2020. You can book now through December 19, 2020, and travel must be completed by December 20, 2020.
Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (714) 520-7088 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30% to 40% off, based on room category.
Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member.
Photopass Discount
Eligible service members can purchase the Photopass Collection for $49 plus tax through December 21, 2019. The package includes digital downloads of all PhotoPass photos in the user's account when they redeem the voucher; a voucher for a dining print package, and a Disneyland photo disc with 350 stock photos from around the Disneyland Resort.
