New Year, New Pier | Disneyland After Dark | Lunar New Year returns to DCA | This and that…
New Year, New Pier
Once the holiday season officially comes to an end at the Disneyland Resort on January 7, work will begin on the transformation of Paradise Pier to Pixar Pier. Starting January 8, 2018, nearly everything—from the pylon at the east entrance to Paradise Pier to the Paradise Gardens area on the west side—is closing for refurbishment.
The project will divide the current Paradise Pier area into four “neighborhoods.” Three of the neighborhoods will each be themed individually to a Pixar property: The Incredibles, Toy Story, and Inside Out. The Toy Story neighborhood includes Toy Story Midway Mania, which will be the only attraction to remain open during the transformation.

Disney says the new land is expected to debut during the Pixar Fest promotion, which begins April 13, though the opening of The Incredicoaster in June, around the release of The Incredibles 2. A new ride based on Inside Out will also open later.

Ariel's Grotto and the Cove Bar will both get Pixar overlays during the transformation, and will also close January 8. Disney has not released theme details for the restaurant, but permits filed with the city of Anaheim show that a new 200-square-foot private dining room will be added during the makeover.
Disney has not posted the full entertainment schedule for early January, but so far there is no announced return date for the World of Color show at Disney California Adventure. In announcing the pending closure of Ariel's Grotto, Disney recommended that people looking for World of Color dining packages during the construction book meals at Carthay Circle or Wine Country Trattoria instead. As of publication time, neither restaurant shows availability for World of Color dining packages beyond January 7, and a cast member at the Disney Dine Line said they did not have any information about the return of the show.
Here is a complete list of locations that will close January 8th for the Pixar Pier makeover:
- California Screamin’
- Mickey’s Fun Wheel
- Ariel’s Grotto and Cove Bar
- Games of the Boardwalk
- Sideshow Shirts
- Boardwalk Bazaar
- Treasures in Paradise
- Point Magu Tattoo
- Don Tomas Turkey Legs
- Hot Dog Hut
- Paradise Pier Ice Cream Company
In addition, there are a few seasonal refurbishments which kick off after the new year:
- Redwood Creek Challenge Trail – closes January 2, 2018 for refurbishment. No reopening date is available at this time.
- It's Tough to be a Bug! – closes January 8, 2018 for refurbishment. No reopening date is available at this time.
- Grizzly River Run – closes January 8, 2018 for refurbishment. No reopening date is available at this time.
Over at Disneyland, here are the closures we know about for the first month of 2018:

- Haunted Mansion Holiday – closes January 8, 2018 to remove the holiday overlay. Reopening date not published.
- Dumbo the Flying Elephant – closes January 8, 2018 for refurbishment. No reopening date is available at this time.
- Main Street Vehicles – closes January 8, 2018 for refurbishment. No reopening date is available at this time.
Disneyland After Dark, revisited
After we published last week's Disneyland Resort Update, Disney provided ticket and event details about the first Disneyland After Dark event, scheduled for Thursday, January 18.
Tickets to this after-hours event are $95 per person, ages 3 and up, and do not include parking. No discounts apply, though Disneyland Resort annual passholders get first dibs on the tickets when they go on sale this Thursday, November 30. Any remaining tickets will be available to the general public starting December 7.
The event runs from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., though ticket holders can enter Disneyland as early as 6:00 p.m. if they choose. In addition to an exclusive showing of the “Fantasy in The Sky” fireworks, select Disneyland rides—including Peter Pan's Flight, Matterhorn Bobsleds, Pirates of the Caribbean, “it's a small world” and Jungle Cruise—will open for the event.
There will also be themed entertainment at locations around the park, meet-and-greets with “classic personalities,” and themed food and drink offerings. Disney's PhotoPass department will be a key player in the event, and admission includes free digital downloads of the PhotoPass photos taken during the event.
Check back on the event website on Thursday, November 30 for the link to purchase tickets. Disney says Throwback Nite is just the first in a series of after-hours events, so stay tuned for future offerings.
Lunar New Year returns to DCA
Disney will commemorate the Year of the Dog with a Lunar New Year Festival at Disney California Adventure, January 26 through February 18. The festival brings back a collection of popular offerings from past Lunar New Year celebrations, including Mulan's Lunar New Year Procession and the Hurry Home – Lunar New Year Celebration water show.
Acrobats perform during Mulan's Lunar New Year Celebration. MousePlanet file photo.
Hurry Home debuted in 2017 as an eight-minute mini-show presented before the start of each performance of the World of Color. As noted above, Disney has not confirmed whether the World of Color will be performed during the Pixar Pier makeover, and the Lunar New Year announcement presents Hurry Home as a stand-alone show, with no mention of World of Color.
The Lunar New Year festivities will also feature special food and beverage offerings from Korea, China and Vietnam, along with character meet-and-greet opportunities and area entertainment. If you're planning a visit to experience the Lunar New Year festival, expect the largest crowds the weekend of February 16–18.
This and that…
U.S. Marines collect children's toys for the Toys for Tots donation drive. MousePlanet file photo.
…Toys for Tots will hold their annual toy drive in Downtown Disney this Saturday and Sunday, December 2 and 3. Look for the collection location at the stage near ESPN Zone and Earl of Sandwich. Toys for Tots collects new, unwrapped toys worth $10 or more, and distributes them to local charities. Representatives from the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and Anaheim Fire and Rescue departments will be on hand from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. each day to accept donations.
If you forget to bring a gift, you'll find a table staffed by Disney VoluntEARS, where you can quickly purchase items that you can then donate. Collection boxes will also be placed in each of the three Disneyland Resort hotels, and inside participating Downtown Disney vendors.
…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We'll also include a fun bonus, such as an Eye Spy or a trivia question. To subscribe to our free newsletter, just enter your e-mail in the box below.

- Dapper Day Spring Outing to Disneyland (unofficial event) – Sunday, April 22. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
- 2018 Grad Nites: May 4, 5, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 22, 23, 29 and 30; June 1, 2, 5, 6, 8 and 9.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Non-Disney Resort Events
Notable events at parks and attractions around Southern California. If you know of an event that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
Knott's Berry Farm
Legoland California

- Kids' New Year's Eve – December 31.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 28, 2016.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Discounts for:
Everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you pre-purchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Southern California residents |
The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Tickets expire May 25, 2017, and are blocked out April 9–23, 2017. Read full details of this offer in the January 17 Disneyland Resort Update. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.
The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next 8-11 months.
