Plaza de la Familia | Holiday preview | Oscar hangs up his apron | Lots of this and that…
Plaza de la Familia

This week, we visit Disney California Adventure and the Plaza de la Familia. This offering is a tie-in to the upcoming Disney-Pixar film Coco, and honors the tradition of Día de los Muertos. The area offers several activities for families, with the longest line for the always-popular complimentary (free) face painting.

A large Árbol de la Vida, or Tree of Life, provides a colorful photo backdrop, with PhotoPass photographers on hand to assist. Next to the Árbol de la Vida is a wall made of paper tags. Each bears a handwritten memory of a friend or family member, and visitors are encouraged to add to the collection.

The Paradise Gardens gazebo is now the World of Coco, providing an introduction to the characters of the upcoming Disney-Pixar film. This display also helps explain some of the concepts from the film, which I personally found helpful. My boys have been curious about what they've seen in the trailers for the film, and this display offers simple explanations to share with children who might not be familiar with Dia de los Muertos imagery.

As we shared in last week's Update, the Paradise Garden Grill has a new Dia de los Muertos menu for the season. A vending cart also offers snack items like elote, spiced cut fruit bowls, and frozen treats.

Holiday preview
Although Halloween Time is in full swing at both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, the winter holidays at the Disneyland Resort celebration will be here before you can say Believe… in Holiday Magic. Here's a look at what we know about the holiday season thus far:
Holidays at the Disneyland Resort run Friday, November 10, 2017 through Sunday, January 7, 2018. The week leading up to the holiday kickoff will feature very few of Disney's big-name entertainment offerings, with Mickey's Soundsational Parade ending its run for the year (or perhaps longer) on Saturday, November 4, and the final 2017 performance of Remember…Dreams Come True fireworks on Sunday, November 5. Fantasmic is dark Monday through Thursday of that week, and Mickey and the Magical Map is on hiatus from November 4 to 11.
The holiday entertainment begins Friday, November 10, with “A Christmas Fantasy Parade” at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Fantasmic returns with two performances that evening, and the first performance of Believe…in Holiday Magic fireworks is at 9:30 p.m.
Over at Disney California Adventure, World of Color – Season of Light returns with two performances, at 9:00 and 10:15 p.m. There are no parades on the DCA schedule at this time, and the remaining holiday entertainment schedule has yet to be released.
It looks like Santa will return to Critter Country for 2017, as Disney has filed for a permit to install the cabin photo backdrop used last year. However, we don't know if Santa will take the form of a Silly Old Bear and friends, or if he'll appear in person this year.
This is a good time to remind our readers planning to spend Thanksgiving at the Disneyland Resort that reservations for most Thanksgiving meals are now open, and some venues have already reached capacity. Make your dinner reservations quickly, lest you find yourself limited to quick-service restaurants for the holiday.
Reservations open next week for the “Holiday Time at the Disneyland Resort” guided tour, which begins Friday, November 10. The cost is $85 per person, with a 15 percent discount offered to Disneyland Resort annual passholders. Call (714) 781-8687 to reserve the tour 30 days in advance of your requested date.
Oscar hangs up his apron
Chef Oscar Martinez, wearing his trademark carnation, stands inside the Carnation Cafe on Main Street, U.S.A. MousePlanet file photo.
Chef Oscar Martinez, the longest-tenured cast member at Disneyland, announced his retirement from the park via his personal Facebook page last Tuesday night. The kindly chef had become something of a celebrity among Disneyland visitors and annual passholders, and was often found greeting customers at the Carnation Cafe on Main Street, where he spent most of his career with Disney. On the restaurant's breakfast menu, “Oscar's Choice” is named for the chef, and comes with a side of breakfast potatoes based on the chef's own recipe.
Chef Oscar worked at Disneyland for nearly 61 years, and spoke of meeting Walt Disney in the park. In his post, he said his retirement was effective the following day, which may have been his way of avoiding a crush of long-time customers visiting the restaurant for “one last” meal, photo or handshake.
His announcement read, “It is with greatest honor, to announce I will be retiring from Disneyland Wednesday September 27th, it has been a great journey these 60 1/2 years. But it has come to an end. May everyone follow there dreams as how I have followed mine. Best wishes for all my Friends Cast Members at the Happiest place on earth.”
This and that…
…Our friends over at TouringPlans were fortunate to come across a meet-and-greet with talking Mickey, Minnie, and Donald Duck characters at Disney California Adventure last week. Take a look at the video to see the interaction between the characters and with the Touring Plans crew:

…The Gay Days at Disneyland event takes place this weekend, October 6–8, at the Disneyland Resort. More information about this unofficial event, including a schedule for the day, is available on the event website. Most of the organized in-park events take place at Disneyland on Saturday, October 7, and in Disney California Adventure on Sunday, October 8. The event's official welcome center is located in the Trillium Room at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel
…Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closed today, October 2, for refurbishment. The ride is expected to reopen October 20.
…Häagen-Dazs has opened a kiosk near the Mickey and Friends tram loading area. The kiosk offers a limited selection of Häagen-Dazs ice cream bars, plus brownie cookie ice cream sandwiches. You can also purchase an assortment of baked goods and bottled beverages.

…We reported that Pinocchio's Workshop, the group childcare offering at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel, abruptly closed in March. Disney has now filed for a construction permit to convert the 1,680-square-foot space into a fitness center. The hotel's existing Eureka Fitness Center is currently located adjacent to the Mandara Spa, so this move to the vacant Pinocchio's space may make room to expand the popular spa facility.
…Residents of California's San Diego County can enter to win one of six Family 4-Packs of tickets to the Disneyland Resort. Visit Shally and Raouls DISNEYLAND Resort Giveaway website for the entry form. You must enter by Friday, October 6 at 7:00 a.m. One entry per person. One winner per household.
…The sneak preview of Thor: Ragnarok begins this Friday, October 6, at the Sunset Showcase Theater in Disney California Adventure.
…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We'll also include a fun bonus, such as an Eye Spy or a trivia question. To subscribe to our free newsletter, just enter your e-mail in the box below.

Resort Events
Check here to see if a large convention, competition, or park event might fall during your next trip to the Disneyland Resort. If you know of any in-park events, official or unofficial, that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2017
- Halloween Time – through October 31.
- Mickey's Halloween Party at Disneyland – October 3, 6, 10, 13, 17, 20, 24, 27 and 31. All event nights are now sold out.
- Gay Days at Disneyland (unofficial event) – October 6–8. More information on the event website.
- Dapper Day Fall Outing to Disneyland (unofficial event) – Sunday, November 5. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
- Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend – November 9–12. This event adds to the Veteran's Day weekend crowds. Registration is still open for some events via the runDisney website.
- Holidays at the Disneyland Resort: November 10, 2017 through January 7, 2018.
2018
- Star Wars – The Light Side Half Marathon Weekend – Originally scheduled for January 11–14, 2018. Registration dates and details pending.
- Dapper Day Spring Outing to Disneyland (unofficial event) – Sunday, April 22. More information at the event website. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth making note of the date if you plan to visit the park during this weekend.
- Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend – Originally scheduled for May 10–13, 2018, but runDisney has since removed the date from the 2018 event listing. Registration dates and details pending.
- 2018 Grad Nites: May 4, 5, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18, 19, 22, 23, 29 and 30; June 1, 2, 5, 6, 8 and 9.
School Holidays
Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other school holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2017
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 19–20. Expect large attendance levels October 19–22 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the Resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- Nevada Day – October 28. Nevada schools are closed on Friday, October 28 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Non-Disney Resort Events
Notable events at parks and attractions around Southern California. If you know of an event that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
Knott's Berry Farm
Legoland California
- Brick-or-Treat – Saturdays in October.
- Holidays at Legoland – November 24, 2017 through January 1, 2018
- Kids' New Year's Eve – December 31.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 28, 2016.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Discounts for:
Everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Southern California residents |
The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Tickets expire May 25, 2017, and are blocked out April 9–23, 2017. Read full details of this offer in the January 17 Disneyland Resort Update. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.
The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next 8-11 months.
