runDisney puts Disneyland Resort events on hiatus
In an announcement posted last Wednesday on the runDisney blog, Disney confirms what we reported here a week ago, that all race weekends at the Disneyland Resort are on hiatus beginning in 2018. The already-announced Star Wars – The Light Side Half Marathon and the Tinker Bell Half Marathon have been cancelled, and with no additional races being scheduled. This decision also means a hiatus for the Coast-to-Coast and Kessel Run challenges. The runDisney announcement did not say how long the hiatus would last.
The Disneyland Resort responded to the announcement, saying:
“While construction for the next several years will impact our ability to deliver the runDisney experience our guests love, we are excited about our future as the Disneyland Resort continues one of its largest multi-year expansions, which includes a new 14-acre land—Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. For fans who love to be part of runDisney events, we will continue to offer races at our other properties around the world in 2018.”
As we reported, nearly 2,000 runners took advantage of an early-registration offer to sign up for the 2018 Star Wars race weekend, which was scheduled to take place January 11–14, 2018. Disney contacted each of the registered runners by email, and said they will issue full refund of registration fees and for any event merchandise runners may have pre-ordered.
Disney cites the ongoing construction related to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge and the Disneyland Resort expansion as the basis for this decision, saying, “Given the level of construction to support the ongoing Disneyland Resort expansion, we have been working hard to determine how we can continue providing our West Coast participants with the best possible runDisney experience, which is designed around the ability to run throughout our resorts while enjoying entertainment offerings and characters.”
The company says race events will continue at the Walt Disney World resort in Florida and the Disneyland Resort in Paris. The virtual race series will also continue.
As the Disney running community absorbed this news, a former runDisney contractor hosted an “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit to talk about his time with the division. Brandon Hough worked as a director of operations for runDisney contractor Spectrum Sports, and oversaw course operations for the Disneyland Resort events from 2014 to 2017. Hough left Spectrum following this year's Tinker Bell Half Marathon weekend to start his own race operations company.
Although he repeatedly says in the AMA that the decision to put the West Coast events on hiatus was made “beyond my pay grade” and came well after he left Spectrum Sports, he did make an interesting comment regarding the relationship between runDisney and the City of Anaheim. In listing the factors he thought went into the decision, he included “An 'unfriendly' City Council.” He went on to detail how the course for the Tinker Bell Half Marathon was changed in 2017 to avoid the need to close freeway on- or off-ramps. “No on/off ramp closures means we don't need city council approval. So it became a game of making courses to avoid closures which eliminated the need for a Cal Trans permit.”
This unexpected hiatus also impacts partners in the runDisney Charity Groups Program, many of whom plan their annual fundraising efforts around runDisney events in Anaheim. Anticipating that runDisney was about to cancel the 2018 events, members of the runDisneyRun Facebook group had already created the LA Hyperspace Marathon and Ultra virtual race, a charity run benefiting Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). Other groups are looking at partnering with other local races, such as the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series, or hosting non-race events as they work to raise funds for their respective charities.
The last race currently scheduled for the Disneyland Resort is next month's Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend. Registration is still open for the Super Heroes Half Marathon and Infinity Gauntlet Challenge events, for those who want to get in one more race around Anaheim before the hiatus.
Come cheer with Team MousePlanetWith just one Disneyland Resort event left on the calendar, Team MousePlanet is pulling out all the stops for our cheer station at the halfway point of the 2017 Super Heroes Half Marathon on Sunday, November 12. These cheer stations have become one of our largest community events, and we plan to go out in style. If you'd like to help us distribute cheer and carbohydrates to the runners, please visit our MousePlanet discussion forum to sign up. If you're running in the 2017 Super Heroes Half Marathon, be sure to request a free personalized cheer sign to be displayed at the Team MousePlanet station on race day. Star Tours to get Last Jedi update
A sharp-eyed reader alerted us last week that one of the cabins at Star Tours: The Adventures Continue at Disneyland appeared not to be in use as they waited to board the ride. Upon exiting, they noticed a “testing, do not enter” sign taped to the exit doors of the cabin. Now Disney has announced that a new scene from Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be added to Star Tours starting Friday, November 17. Walt Disney World will also debut the new scene on the same day, followed by Disneyland Paris on November 22, and Tokyo Disneyland on December 15.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in theaters on Friday, December 15. Fans who want to avoid any possible spoilers of the new film may wish to skip Star Tours until they see the movie, although you've probably already had more of the movie spoiled by watching the trailers.
Candlelight and Christmas Parade
Mark your calendars for the 2017 Candlelight Ceremony and Processional. The 2017 event is confirmed to be Saturday, December 2 and Sunday, December 3, with two performances each night. Disney has yet to announce the narrator(s) for the event.
We are often asked about the taping schedule for the West Coast portion of the Disney Parks Christmas Day specials. Disney and ABC usually record segments for the show in November and December, which are then edited into a holiday special to air on Christmas Day.
In 2016, Disney filmed the majority of the production and the parade from locations throughout Walt Disney World, with just a set of stage performances taped at the Disneyland Resort. This year, it appears the parade portion will again be taped at Disneyland, with the musical productions taped at Walt Disney World in early November.
Disneyland rarely releases the dates of the taping in advance, in an effort to minimize crowds who might turn up to watch the parade taping, or to see a favorite performer. We'll share more information as we can confirm it. However, we do not recommend that you plan a special trip just to see the taping.
Save room for National Dessert Month
October is apparently National Dessert Month, with National Dessert Day having fallen on October 14. October is also National Cookie Month and National Caramel Month, and of course wraps up with National Eat All Your Kids' Halloween Candy Day on November 1.
With a week still left to indulge, the folks behind three Downtown Disney restaurants sent us some of their top National Dessert Month offerings.

This and that…
…”it's a small world” is now closed through November 9 to install the holiday overlay. The ride reopens on Friday, November 10 for the start of the holiday season at Disneyland. A cast member source tells MousePlanet that “it's a small world” Holiday will be available via the MaxPass system this year.
…Nevada schools are closed this Friday, October 27 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend for our friends to the North. While Nevada Day doesn't usually draw the same crowds as UEA, it's worth mentioning.
The next mug in the Hitchhiking Ghost series will be released Tuesday morning at the Disneyland Hotel. Photo courtesy of Disney.
…The latest version of the Hitchhiking Ghost Tiki Mug series will be released tomorrow, October 24 at Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar at the Disneyland Hotel. Sales begin at 7:00 a.m., and Disney says guests may line up no earlier than 6:00 a.m. There is a limit of two mugs per person.
…MousePlanet reader Brian P. sent us a reminder about the impact of the annual NAMM convention on the Disneyland Resort, and it's worth a look if you're planning to visit in January:
Just wanted to let you know that hotel reservations all around Disneyland for the week of January 20th till January 29th are becoming VERY scarce because of the North American Music Merchandisers convention on the 20th to the 28th! We tried booking our traditional “Off Season” room at the Best Western a month ago and were told that they are already sold out, and most other hotels on Harbor are sold out as well. Speculation has been that most of these industry folks are flying in a week early for a nice little vacation at Disneyland then off to the convention center on the weekend, making rooms pretty darned hard to come by! Link is here: https://www.namm.org/
…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We'll also include a fun bonus, such as an Eye Spy or a trivia question. To subscribe to our free newsletter, just enter your e-mail in the box below.

School Holidays
Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other school holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2017
- Nevada Day – October 28. Nevada schools are closed on Friday, October 28 to observe Nevada Day, creating a three-day weekend.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Non-Disney Resort Events
Notable events at parks and attractions around Southern California. If you know of an event that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).

Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 28, 2016.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

Discounts for:
Everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you pre-purchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Southern California residents |
The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Tickets expire May 25, 2017, and are blocked out April 9–23, 2017. Read full details of this offer in the January 17 Disneyland Resort Update. You can either purchase tickets at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths, or online at Disneyland.com and print them at home. You can also purchase them at participating Disney Stores and authorized third party ticket outlets, including many local grocery stores. |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions. Entertainment schedule: Go directly to the Disneyland Resort schedule for this week at Disneyland.com here.
The Seasons calendar is published on the Disneyland website for the next 8-11 months.
