Disneyland Resort announces construction of new hotel & parking structure; Eastern Gateway project shelved
Disney last week announced two major projects for the west side of the Disneyland Resort: a four-diamond hotel, and an expansion of the existing Mickey and Friends structure. Additionally, the company confirmed that the previously announced Eastern Gateway project has been shelved for the time being. These plans represent a major shift in Disney's development of their Anaheim resort complex, and may reflect the changing relationship between the Walt Disney Company and the City of Anaheim.
A new Disneyland Resort hotel
A fourth hotel for the Disneyland Resort was first announced in 2016, when Disney filed plans to construct the 700-room resort along the northern edge of the current Downtown Disney parking lot. Disney said at the time that the property would break ground in 2018, and open in 2021.

The size and timeline for the new hotel hasn't changed, but the location most certainly has. Disney now plans to build the hotel at the western edge of Downtown Disney, on land currently occupied by the ESPN Zone, Rainforest Cafe, and the complex housing the AMC Theater, Earl of Sandwich restaurant, and the second Downtown Disney Starbucks. Construction begins in the summer of 2018 and the property is still slated to open in 2021. Operators of the affected businesses notified their employees of the pending closures shortly before Disney made its announcement last week. Disney says that there are retail and food service opportunities on the ground floor of the new hotel complex, and that it will negotiate possible relocation with each operating partner individually.

The new buildings have a very distinct architectural style, and look as if they'd fit seamlessly into Walt Disney World's Epcot theme park.

Disney says the hotel will feature direct access via Monorail to Disneyland, though there was no indication if this Downtown Disney station will be reserved only for guests of this new hotel, or will remain open for all Disneyland visitors to use. There was also no mention of a possible Disney Vacation Club element of this hotel, though new DVC properties are seemingly not announced until the carpet is laid and the paint drying in the new rooms.
More parking at Mickey and Friends, and beyond
The Mickey and Friends parking structure will gain a 6500-space sibling, constructed on what is currently the Pinocchio lot. The two parking structures will share the existing Mickey and Friends vehicle entrance, with new access lanes leading to the new structure and toll plaza. The new structure will have its own set of elevators and escalators, leading to a redesigned security checkpoint and tram loading area.

Construction on the new addition is scheduled to begin in February 2018, though Disney has already filed plans to begin demolition of structures on the Pinocchio lot. Disney expects the new structure to open in 2019, in time for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge to open at Disneyland.

The structure shown is significantly larger than the existing Disneyland Hotel and Paradise Pier Hotel parking structures combined. Based on the size of the lot it will occupy, the new parking structure could hold well over 3,000 cars, which happens to be roughly the capacity of the Katella cast member parking lot.
Eastern Gateway shelved
Disney also confirmed last week that the Eastern Gateway project, an ambitious plan to revamp the entry from the Harbor Boulevard hotels to the resort, has been shelved for the time being. Announced in 2016, the Eastern Gateway development would have created a new front door to the Disneyland Resort, with a 6,800-space parking structure and a new transportation hub for buses and shuttles. Visitors would pass through a new centralized security checkpoint and onto to a pedestrian bridge taking them right over Harbor Blvd. and onto Disney property.
To make room for the proposed development, Disney purchased and announced plans to demolish the Carousel Inn & Suites, leaving a clear path to Disney-owned land behind that hotel.
The plan drew complaints—and threats of legal action—from a coalition of owners of various hotels and restaurants along Harbor Boulevard, who feared Disney's new bridge would have a serious negative impact on their businesses. Though the concept of the bridge over Harbor was approved in 1992 Disneyland Resort Specific Plan that governs development in this section of Anaheim, the nitty-gritty details about pedestrian access to and from Harbor businesses still had to be hammered out.
With the pending opening of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge in 2019, and Disneyland's parking deficit becoming more urgent, it appears the company just decided to go back to Plan A, and build an expansion of the Mickey and Friends structure which had already been approved as part of the original plans.
Disney says it still intends to demolish the Carousel Inn & Suites in the next few weeks, and has no plans for the site at this time.
Pixar Fest debuts April 13, 2018
Whether you call it flying or “falling with style,” Disneyland visitors will get to watch Buzz Lightyear do it over Sleeping Beauty Castle starting April 13, 2018 as Pixar Fest begins.
The “limited-time event,” (Disney has not released an end date for the promotion), includes a new fireworks show called “Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular.” This show will make use of the projectors installed for the 60th anniversary “Disneyland Forever” fireworks show, painting images on Main Street, U.S.A., “it's a small world,” and Tom Sawyer Island. The show also includes the aforementioned flyover by a certain Space Ranger, replacing Tinker Bell in this production.
As previously announced, the Pixar Play Parade will head to Disneyland for the promotion, with three new units added to the procession. The Paint the Night parade will return to the Disneyland Resort on April 13, this time stepping off in Disney California Adventure.
The Sunset Showcase Theater in DCA will play a rotating selection of Pixar Shorts during the event, though we wish Disney had instead brought to Anaheim “The Music of Pixar – Live” a concert show featured this summer in Walt Disney World.
Conspicuously missing from the Pixar Fest announcement was any mention of the Pixar Pier retheme of the Paradise Pier district, which was announced at the 2017 D23 Expo.
Dapper Days are here again
The Dapper Day Fall Outing to Disneyland takes place this Sunday, November 5. This popular event grows larger each year, so it's worth taking note if you plan to visit the park during this weekend. While the scheduled gatherings all take place on Sunday, the Dapper Days Expo runs Saturday and Sunday from noon to 7:00 p.m., and you're likely to encounter well-dressed visitors both days.
Tickets to the Dapper Day Expo are $10, and includes admission on both days and access to a series of workshops on Saturday. You can purchase at the door, or online before you go.
Several Dapper Days vendors will have exclusive items or will debut new products during this Expo. Pinup Girl Clothing has just launched a new collection designed for Dapper Days, and will feature the line at the Expo.
Besame Cosmetics will also debut their new Agent Carter makeup line at the Expo. The company first announced this collection during the 2017 D23 Expo, and said they expect the cases for these lipsticks, eyeshadows and more to become collectors items.

Christmas Parade update
We are often asked about the taping schedule for the West Coast portion of the Disney Parks Christmas Day specials. Disney and ABC usually record segments for the show in November and December, which are then edited into a holiday special to air on Christmas Day. As we reported last week, it appears the parade portion of the 2017 special will be taped at Disneyland, with the musical productions taped at Walt Disney World in early November.
Disneyland rarely releases the dates of the taping in advance, in an effort to minimize crowds who might turn up to watch the parade taping, or to see a favorite performer. However, permits filed last week by Disney seem to indicate that the Disneyland and Disney California Adventure portions of the Disney Parks holiday specials will be taped sometime between November 10 and 15.
Given that weekend is both the Veteran's Day holiday and the Avengers Super Heroes Half Marathon, it's unlikely the taping will happen on Saturday or Sunday. We suspect the tapings may take place Monday, Tuesday, and/or Wednesday. We have no information about which performers may appear, but there are filming locations planned for Main Street, in front of “it's a small world,” and in Cars Land.
As always, we do not recommend that you plan a special trip just to see the taping.
runDisney's Disneyland hiatus extends into 2019
As we reported last week, runDisney announced that race weekends at the Disneyland Resort would be on hiatus beginning in 2018. The already-announced 2018 Star Wars – The Light Side Half Marathon and the Tinker Bell Half Marathon were cancelled, with refunds issued to runners who had already registered.
Now, in a social media posting made Monday, runDisney seems to have confirmed that the races won't return to the West Coast in 2019 either. The 2018–2019 schedule lists four race weekends in Walt Disney World, the third year of a Disneyland Paris event, and the return of the summertime virtual race series. There are no Disneyland events listed.

In recent years, runDisney's race season began with the Disneyland Half Marathon over Labor Day weekend, and concluded with the Tinker Bell Half Marathon weekend over Mother's Day. With the publication of the 2018–2019 schedule, the first opportunity for a West Coast race could be the 2020 Disneyland Half Marathon.
The last race currently scheduled for the Disneyland Resort is next month's Super Heroes Half Marathon Weekend. For those who want to get in one more race around Anaheim before the hiatus, registration is still open for the Super Heroes Half Marathon event, though runDisney has added a $12 “late registration” fee to the $185 event price, and warns that corral placement is based on availability, and shirt sizes are not guaranteed. If you're particular about your corral assignments, take note that proof of time is no longer considered. MousePlanet's Lorree Tachell reports that she just registered for the event, and was been assigned to the second-to-last corral.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

2017 Military Salute Offer Disney released details of its 2017 Military Salute offer for Disneyland and Walt Disney World last October, and the tickets are valid January 1 through April 8 and April 24 through December 19, 2017. At the time we first shared details of the offer, we did not know about (or Disney had not announced) a special PhotoPass promotion also available to military personnel. Through December 19, 2017, active and retired U.S. military personnel who are eligible for the Military Salute offer can also purchase the Disney PhotoPass Collection for $49, a discount of 50% over the usual $99 price. The Disney PhotoPass Collection includes digital downloads of all available PhotoPass photos linked to your account, a voucher for a dining print package and a Disneyland Resort Gallery Disc with 350 high-resolution professional photos from around Disneyland Resort. Southern California CityPASS ($346/$314) – includes a 3-Day Disneyland Resort Park Hopper Bonus Ticket (including one early-entry day), a one-day admission to Sea World San Diego, and a one-day admission to LEGOLAND California. The CityPASS expires 14 days after first use at any location, and the first use must occur by December 31, 2017. Purchase CityPASS through the Disneyland website or on-site at the ticket booths of Disneyland Resort or the other theme parks included in the pass. You can also purchase directly from the CityPASS website, though a shipping charge may apply depending on how quickly you need the ticket. When you purchase the CityPASS, you have the option of adding a one-day admission to either San Diego Zoo or San Diego Safari Park for an extra $42/$34. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you pre-purchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). The 3-Day So Cal Resident 1-Park Per Day ticket offers residents of Southern California and Northern Baja California admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure on one day, and then a second visit to either park on another day on or before May 25, 2017. You can use both days of this ticket at the same theme park, or visit one park one day and the other park on the second day, but you cannot use it to enter both parks on the same day. The ticket is $149 for ages 3 and up. You can also upgrade this ticket to a 3-Day Park Hopper, which allows entry to both parks each day, for an additional $40, a savings of up to $106 compared to the box office price of a three-day park-hopper ticket. If purchased in advance of arrival, the three-day tickets include one Magic Morning admission. This benefit does not come with tickets purchased at the theme park ticket booths, so make sure to order online and print at home before you arrive. If purchasing at a participating third party ticket outlet, double-check that their 3-day tickets come with this feature. There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means you can use the first admission today and wait until May to use the second (or third) admission. You must, however, purchase the ticket by May 22, 2017. Costco Travel Packages – many different travel packages including visits to Disneyland and Disneyland hotels are available through Costco. Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – These package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants.
