Aladdin to be Frozen out in 2016
If you've been following Disneyland news for a long while, a press release posted late last Wednesday night may prompted a sense of deja vu. As announced by the Disney Parks Blog, Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular is closing early next year at Disney's California Adventure, and will be replaced with a musical based on one of the most popular animated features of all time.
Of course, it's not 2009 and we aren't talking about “Toy Story: The Musical.” In the updated version of this story, Aladdin closes January 10, 2016, to be replaced sometime next summer by a new musical based on Frozen.
This latest announcement was as poorly received as the 2009 attempt to replace Aladdin, though perhaps for a much different reason. While there are a fair number of people who are unhappy to see Aladdin leave for any reason, quite a few of the people responding to the Disney Parks Blog announcement and on MousePlanet's discussion board and Facebook page acknowledge that 13 years is an incredible run for a theme park show. For this group, the complaint isn't that Aladdin is leaving, but that it's being replaced by yet another “Frozen-inspired” offering. These people want Disney to “Let It Go” already, and stop what they see as the Frozen takeover of the Disneyland Resort.
Already at Disney California Adventure, Muppet*Vision 3D is in “hiatus” due to the Frozen sing-along show, the gift kiosk in the studios area has been transformed into Wandering Oaken's Trading Post, and a portion of the Animation Building is devoted to the Anna and Elsa meet-and-greet. Frozen is also featured in the World of Color – Celebrate show.
Over in Disneyland, Frozen is a prominent part of the Disneyland Forever fireworks show, and Anna, Elsa and Olaf have a huge twinkling presence in the “Paint the Night” parade. There's also the Frozen story time show in the Fantasy Faire area, and Elsa's castle along the banks of the Storybookland Canal Boats attraction. And let's not forget Anna & Elsa's Boutique in Downtown Disney.
Disneyland may not have closed a beloved theme park ride to make way for the sisters from Arendelle, a la Epcot's Maelstrom, but the franchise is well represented all over the resort. For many, this new show is just too much, though others see a silver lining.
Once Frozen replaces Aladdin at the Hyperion theater, it's likely—almost certain—that Disney will close the sing-along show in DCA. The return of the Muppets to their former theater may be contingent on the success of their new ABC television show, but at least that building would be open for a new attraction. Disneyland would likely restore Tangled and Beauty and the Beast to the Fantasy Faire story time rotation.
The reality is that Frozen fever isn't going to completely thaw anytime soon—especially not with another movie in the works—but this move may actually mark the start of a more considered approach to all things Frozen, and a departure from the “slap a snowflake on every flat surface” mindset of the past two years.
Meanwhile, Shawn Slater said to keep an eye out for “details on how we plan to celebrate the Disney California Adventure park favorite before, as Genie says, he’s 'outta here!'” After 13 years and nearly 14,000 performances, Aladdin definitely deserves to go out on a high note.
Diamond Days sweepstakes extended
This caught us completely by surprise, but the Disneyland Resort has extended the Diamond Days Sweepstakes that launched in May as part of the 60th Anniversary celebration.
Legally, this is a new sweepstakes, but the details are pretty much the same. As before, there is a Daily and a Weekly contest, and it's best to consider them to be two completely separate contests.
This Sleeping Beauty crown is one of the prizes in the new Diamond Days Sweepstakes. Photo © Disney.
Daily contest – open to visitors on Disneyland Resort property; text entry
To enter the daily contest, look for the Word of the Day posted on signs outside each of the four bag check areas (both sides of the Esplanade; Disneyland Monorail entrance; Grand Californian Hotel entrance). Use your phone to correctly text the Word of the Day to 227853 between 7:00 a.m. and 10:59 a.m. Note: this is a new number, and entries sent to the old number are not valid.
Disney will notify the winners via reply text or phone call around 11:00 a.m. that same day. Winners have 60 minutes to claim the prize at the Disneyland Resort, or forfeit the prize.
Those who do not have or choose not to use a phone to enter the contest can enter using tablets available at the Guest Relations window outside Disney California Adventure. The winner will also be posted at this location, for those who do not have the ability to receive a text or call in the event they are the winner.
While the official rules state that “Entrant must be physically present at the Resort premises (which includes ungated areas) at the time of entry into daily sweepstakes,” many local readers have noted that they could easily reach the Disneyland Resort within 60 minutes if they win, and so plan to enter every day. The Word of the Day is available each morning from the contest website. If you follow MousePlanet on Twitter or Facebook, we also post the Word of the Day each morning from those accounts.
If you submit your text entry between 7:00 a.m. and 10:59 a.m., you are automatically entered into both the daily AND weekly drawings. If you submit your text entry after 10:59 a.m., you are not eligible to win the daily prize, but will be entered into the weekly prize drawing.
The prize in the daily contest is a VIP tour experience for the winner and up to three guests. The experience includes the services of a VIP guide for up to seven hours, a meal at a Disneyland Resort restaurant (up to $60 per person), and reserved viewing at selected shows and/or parades. Park admission is included for you and/or your guests if needed.
The daily contest runs September 11, 2015 through February 5, 2016, with a total of 147 prizes to be awarded.

Weekly contest – open to everyone; daily text or online entry
If you aren't visiting Disneyland, or lucky enough to live within quick driving distance, you can still enter each day to be eligible for the weekly contest.
To enter the weekly contest, visit the Word of the Day website to get that day's magic word, then fill out the entry form on the contest website. You can enter once per day. If you follow MousePlanet on Twitter or Facebook, we also post the Word of the Day each morning from those accounts.
Disney will select the weekly winner each Tuesday, and notify the weekly winner via e-mail and/or phone call. The winner must contact Disney within 2 business days or forfeit the prize.
The 21 weekly prizes include some repeats from the original contest and some new offerings. As before, all include a three-day, two-night trip to Disneyland for the winner and up to three guests.
- One Sleeping Beauty Crown package – a white gold-plated silver Sleeping Beauty Crown, decorated with tanzanite and cubic zirconia.
- Two Blue Diamond packages – each featuring a two-carat aqua blue diamond.
- One Red Diamond package – featuring a two-carat garnet red diamond.
- Five White Diamond packages – each featuring a one-carat white diamond, and a one-night stay in the Disneyland Dream Suite (subject to availability)
- Six Disney Character Party packages – featuring a “Disney Character VIP Party Experience”
- Five Disneyland Resort Experience packages – featuring a “special themed Disneyland Resort Experience”
- One Jungle Cruise Dinner package – featuring a “a special Jungle Cruise experience including a private dinner.”
One additional Final Prize, including a Disneyland vacation, a one-night stay in the Disneyland Dream Suite and a limited-edition Disney lithograph, will be awarded at the end of the contest. The winner will be selected from all valid daily and weekly contest entries submitted between September 11, 2015 through February 5, 2016.
The weekly prize for the September 11–18 entry period is the Blue Diamond package. According to the contest website, the winner will “receive a cool 2-carat blue Disney Diamond—laser-engraved with a Hidden Mickey. This treasure will be presented by a Disneyland Ambassador as well as Anna and Elsa, the stars of Disney’s Frozen!”
For full rules and eligibility requirements, please visit the official contest website.
Disneyland's Diamond Halloween Time
The Haunted Mansion Holiday attraction is said to show what happens when two holidays collide, but Main Street, U.S.A. is a great example of what happens when Disneyland tries to run two marketing campaigns at the same time. The result is a Disneyland's Diamond Halloween Time, a mashup of the spooky and the sparkling. Enjoy some photos from the opening weekend of the Halloween Time promotion.

Check back this week for another article detailing all of the Halloween treats to be found at Disneyland Resort restaurants. There are a slew of options already available this year, with more on the way. Until then, here's a look at some of the new souvenir items.

Vegetarians frustrated with menu changes; ice cream locations dish up new allergy policy
Farewell to the fried green tomato
Reader Jenny Brody alerted us to menu changes at two Disneyland locations, which have some vegetarians looking for new places to eat. The Fried Green Tomato sandwich has been axed from the menu at the Hungry Bear in Critter Country, replaced with a new Turkey Caesar Wrap. Big Al's Chicken Salad was replaced with a new Picnic Salad with turkey breast, strawberries, feta cheese, cranberries, roasted almonds, jicama, and mixed greens, all tossed with a strawberry vinaigrette. The sweet potato fries are also history.
This change leaves no vegetarian entrees on the menu, although there are a few off-menu options if you know to ask for them. A Garden Burger-brand patty can be substituted on either the Crispy Chicken Sandwich or the Classic Cheeseburger, and you can order the Picnic Salad without turkey.
A push to make the Harbour Galley menu more seafood-focused spelled the end of the stuffed baked potatoes offered at that location. While none of the three versions were vegetarian as presented, you could get a simple potato with butter, sour cream and/or cheese on request. Fans of the baked potatoes can still find them in the back of Fantasyland, at Troubadour Tavern at the entrance to the Fantasyland Theater.
The Harbour Galley still serves Broccoli Cheddar Cheese soup, though it has been removed from the menu sign in favor of a generic “seasonal soup” listing. However, ask before you order to see if the soup is truly vegetarian, or if it's made with chicken stock. (We've heard both versions from different cast members, and haven't checked labels to be sure).
Nuts to you, ice cream lover
Reader Helga B. alerted us to a policy change at Disneyland's cone shops. During a recent visit, Helga's daughter ordered an ice cream sundae for her son at Disneyland's Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor, and alerted the cast members that her son has a peanut allergy. In the past, this meant the cast member preparing the sundae would change gloves, and prepare the dish away from the assembly area where peanuts are stored. This time, Helga's daughter was informed that her only option would be to order a cup of plain vanilla or chocolate ice cream—no cones, no toppings. Since this was a complete change from their previous experiences, Helga asked us to look into it.
We've confirmed that the ice cream locations have changed their policies regarding guests who disclose they have an allergy, and a manager explained the reasoning behind the change: Gibson Girl and Clarabelle's prepare orders on an open station, where chopped peanuts and peanut-covered items are openly stored (just think of the stacks of chocolate-covered, peanut-crusted waffle cones displayed behind the counters). Because of this, and despite the best efforts of the employees, there is no way to eliminate the possibility of cross-contamination. Since even a tiny bit of peanut can trigger a life-threatening reaction in a seriously allergic person, the decision was made to create a dedicated peanut-free area in an adjacent kitchen.
In the case of Gibson Girl, a container each of chocolate and vanilla ice cream are stored in the Carnation Cafe kitchen, completely separate from any peanut ingredients. This reduces the chance of cross-contamination, but also limits the ice cream selection. As for toppings and cones, the manager said there is no way to ensure they have been kept separate from peanut ingredients without opening a new package of cones and sprinkles each time a customer requests one.
As someone who has both worked in a commercial kitchen and who has family members with life-threatening food allergies, I understand both the operational challenges of the restaurant, and the frustration of the customer. It's not a perfect system, but it makes sense.
Helga noted that her family will probably head to Ghirardelli in Disney California Adventure the next time they want ice cream, since the shop does not use peanuts. (Note, Ghirardelli uses chopped almonds instead of peanuts, and serves peanut butter in only one specific sundae).

This and that…
…During a investor conference last week, Disney Chief Operating Officer Thomas Staggs said that Disney will break ground on the new Star Wars land expansions at Disneyland and Disney's Hollywood Studios sometime in 2016, though he did not provide a construction time line or hint when the new lands will open.
Disneyland's Jedi Training Academy may adopt a Walt Disney World policy. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
…Disney conducted a two-day test at the Jedi Training Academy last week, bringing a Walt Disney World practice to California for the first time. During the test, parents of children interested in participating in the show were sent to a location outside of Store Command in Tomorrowland to pre-register their children for the show. The children were given a return time, and instructed where to check in for their show. This is the same system used at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida.
We don't know if Disney considered the test to be successful, but don't be surprised if this policy is formally introduced when the new Jedi Training Academy show—with a new character from Star Wars: The Force Awakens—debuts later this year.

- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 20–21.
- 2016 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – September 1–4.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 2015.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

The tickets are valid starting October 11, 2015, and must by used by November 6, 2015. For this 25th Anniversary event, CHOC has raised the minimum fund-raising commitment. There is no charge to register for the walk, but walkers (ages 3 and up) must commit to raise $65 before the event. 2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132) |
A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. For complete information regarding Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets and discounted resort rates, military personnel may visit the Disneyland Resort website, or participating U.S. military base ticket offices. |

Discounts for everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct. Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
