Report touts Disneyland Resort impact on Southern California economy
A recent study by three Cal State Fullerton economists found that the Disneyland Resort created $8.5 billion in economic impact in Southern California during the 2018 fiscal year. Josh D’Amaro, president of Disneyland Resort, shared the results of the Disney-commissioned report during a keynote address to the OC Forum last week.
The survey found that Disneyland generates more than 78,000 jobs in Southern California, with 73% of those positions located in Orange County. It found the Resort generated nearly $510 million in annual state and local tax revenue in fiscal 2018, of which $162 million went to Anaheim’s general fund. The report also concluded that the Resort's overall economic impact had increased by 50% since a similar study commissioned in 2013.
During his remarks, D’Amaro said that he focuses on three core topics: Cast, community, and commercial. He discussed several initiatives the Disneyland Resort sponsors in Orange County to benefit employees and the larger community. He spoke to the success of the Disney Aspire program, which covers tuition, textbooks and fees for hourly employees and cast members, and touched on a $10 million childcare assistance program announced earlier this year.
D’Amaro shared the success of the recent CHOC Walk at the Disneyland Resort, which raised $2.5 million for Children's Hospital Orange County, as well as video of the 11th Disney-sponsored KaBOOM playground in Anaheim, the first to be built with features designed for children with disabilities.
Touching on commercial, D’Amaro noted the popularity of the added-cost MaxPass program, and the convenience of the expanded mobile food ordering service. He shared video from Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, and gave a recap of announcements from the recent D23 Expo, including the upcoming Avengers Campus, the new Magic Happens parade, and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.
Despite the overall feel-good tone of the presentation, D’Amaro spoke candidly about his first months as president of the Disneyland Resort in 2018, and feeling like (in his words) the enemy at times. When he took over, Disneyland had just canceled the Eastern Gateway Project, and announced instead plans to build a new parking structure and four-star hotel on the west side of the Resort.
While the new parking structure went ahead as planned, Disney pulled the plug on the hotel last October, due in part to ongoing tensions with the city of Anaheim over a tax rebate agreement. It was Josh D’Amaro who asked the City of Anaheim to set aside the controversial tax agreements, saying the deals were too politically divisive.
In the year since Disney canceled the Downtown Disney makeover, Anaheim has seen elected a new mayor and city council, a majority of whom were backed by Disney in the 2018 election. Just before Disney's $1 billion Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge expansion opened, Anaheim city spokesman Mike Lyster told CNBC the city and Disney had “hit the reset button” on their relationship.
With three huge empty space in Downtown Disney caused by the failed hotel project, and acres of vacant land along Harbor Boulevard left over from the Eastern Gateway project, Disney has a lot of very valuable real estate laying around. Disney will need cooperation from the city for any new expansion and development plan. By commissioning this updated study, Disney looks to be trying to strengthen its credentials as a good corporate neighbor.
Oogie Boogie Bash begins this week, but tickets are sold out
As we predicted in the last Update, all nights of the new Oogie Boogie Bash event at Disney California Adventure are now sold out. The event sold out despite the move from Disneyland to Disney California Adventure, a $15 price increase on Halloween night, and a schedule that put every event on a typical school night.
The first of the after-hour events is this Tuesday, September 17. Oogie Boogie Bash includes trick-or-treat stations, themed entertainment, the debut of the Frightfully Fun Parade and Ride of the Headless Horseman at Disney California Adventure, plus an all-new Halloween edition of the World of Color show. MousePlanet writers will attend the September 19 event, and will have a review of the new offerings in next Monday's Update.
But what happens if you had your heart (and vacation plans) set on attending a specific, sold-out night? Before you turn to Craigslist, StubHub, or eBay (all of which bring with them the very high risk of being defrauded), here are official ways you may still be able to buy legitimate party tickets directly from Disney:
- Call the Disneyland Resort and order tickets by phone – a limited number of tickets may be available by phone for events that are sold out on line. Call (714) 781-4636 to purchase by phone. Expect to wait on hold for at least 10 minutes.
- Visit Disneyland and purchase tickets in person – a limited number of tickets may be available at the Disneyland ticket booths for events that are sold out on line. However, if you tried to purchase tickets by phone and the night you wanted was sold out, they will not be available at the ticket booths.
- Disneyland Resort Hotels – if you are a guest staying at one of the three Disney-owned hotels (Disneyland Hotel, Paradise Pier Hotel, or Grand Californian Hotel), check with your hotel desk the morning of the event to see if they have tickets available for purchase. In past years, a small number of tickets were reserved for Disneyland Resort Hotel guests, and were released for sale at 5:30 a.m. the morning of each party. Officially, these tickets are intended only for concierge-level guests, but we've heard conflicting stories about that, and it seems some guests in standard rooms have been allowed to buy the tickets as well. If you're already staying on property, it doesn't hurt to ask. These tickets sell out very quickly, so don't wait until the party starts to try to make your purchase.
- Friends or family – if friends/family already have tickets, they may be able to purchase additional tickets the day of the party. Again, a small number of tickets are reserved for same-day sales to help accommodate ticket holders who may have miscounted how many they need, or who had friends/family unexpectedly join them. As with the tickets reserved for hotel guests, these are very limited, and go on sale as soon as the ticket booths open in the morning. If at all possible, get there first thing in the morning to increase your chance of getting tickets. You must have the other event tickets with you the cast member needs to see them, and cannot just trust your word that “so-and-so already has tickets.”
Asian Street Eats
We shared in the last Update that Chef Hung Hyunh, winner of Top Chef season 3, will open a new eatery called Asian Street Eats in Downtown Disney this winter. Disney describes Asian Street Eats as a “take-out window,” and said only that it will be located on the west end of Downtown Disney.
Given that the new venue by will be operated by Earl Enterprises restaurant group, of Earl of Sandwich fame, and that Disney provided a general idea of its planned location, some fans asked if this meant the beloved sandwich shop was once again slated to close. (The location closed in June, 2018 to make room for construction of a planned fourth Disney hotel, and then reopened last October after Disney canceled the project.)
Never to fear, the Earl is not being dethroned by the Top Chef. According to permits filed with the city of Anaheim, Asian Street Eats will be located in a “new cooking and food service trailer sitting on jacks anchored to the ground,” located in front of the former Rainforest Cafe restaurant (which also closed in 2018, but did not reopen).

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Everyone
Purchase with purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced-price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location.
Disney usually allows customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item.
Character dining vouchers – Disneyland is no longer offering tickets or vouchers to be pre-purchased for Character Dining. You may still make reservations 60 days in advance with payment due at the restaurant.

Disneyland Resort Military Discounts
Ticket discounts
Through December 18, 2019, active and retired U.S. military personnel (including active and retired members of the United States Coast Guard, National Guard and Reservists) or their spouses can purchase:
- Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $178 each (an increase of $10 from the 2018 offer)
- Disney Military Promotional 4-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $198 each (an increase of $10 from the 2018 offer)
Disneyland tickets may be used through December 18, 2019, excluding the spring break blockout of April 14–22, 2019.
Active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets for themselves and up to five additional family members or friends. No more than six Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or spouse) pursuant to this offer. All tickets and options are non-transferable and must be used by December 18, 2019.
Hotel discounts
Military discounts are valid for stays most nights from January 1 through December 19, 2019. Travel must be completed by December 20, 2019.
Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (714) 520-7088 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30% to 40% off, based on room category.
Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member.
Photopass Discount
Eligible service members can purchase the Photopass Collection for $49 plus tax through December 21, 2019. The package includes digital downloads of all PhotoPass photos in the user's account when they redeem the voucher; a voucher for a dining print package, and a Disneyland photo disc with 350 stock photos from around the Disneyland Resort.

Here are some other details you should know about regarding the offers:
- Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased at participating U.S. military sales outlets ONLY by Eligible Service Members (defined below) or their spouses (but not both), for use by themselves and other family members and friends, as provided herein. These Tickets may not be otherwise transferred, distributed or resold.
- Eligible Service Members are active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service (PHS), and the Commissioned Corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
- The actual prices charged at the individual U.S. military base ticket offices for Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be less than the prices set forth above.
- Participating military sales outlets must require that Eligible Service Members (or their spouses) present valid military identification to purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets.
- Disney 3-Day or 4-Day Military Promotional Tickets for admission to the Disneyland Resort expire and may not be used after December 19, 2019. Valid military identification will be required for purchase and use.
- No more than six (6) Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased and (if applicable) activated by any Eligible Service Member or spouse (regardless of the place of purchase and whether purchased by that person or that person’s spouse). Disney's Resort Magic and Good Neighbor Magic Packages – these package includes accommodations in one of the three resort hotels or at one of 40 Good Neighbor hotels, along with theme park admission. The packages also come with a variety of extra inclusions and bonuses, usually a souvenir pin and lanyard, and discount coupons for various Downtown Disney merchants.

- Reservation only – must make advance reservation to enter park
