Jessica steals the show

The Orange County Register reported last week that Disneyland is revamping the Roger Rabbit Car Toon Spin attraction in Mickey's ToonTown to make Jessica Rabbit the star of the show.

Based on the 1988 film Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Roger Rabbit Car Toon Spin “revisits the story of Roger Rabbit as he attempts to rescue his beloved wife Jessica Rabbit from the evil henchman known as the Weasels.”

Jessica Rabbit is the new star of Roger Rabbit Car Toon Spin attraction at Disneyland. MousePlanet file.

The Disneyland website still contains the original description for the ride, in which passengers “Steer a runaway taxicab through the wacky streets of Toontown as you follow the adventures of Roger Rabbit.”

In the updated backstory for the ride, Jessica Rabbit has hung up her shingle as a private investigator, and is pursuing a gang of weasels responsible for a crime spree in Toon Town. The Register says one scene in the ride has already been updated. Instead of the weasels kidnapping Jessica and cramming her into the trunk of their getaway car, they are instead making off with a trunk loaded with barrels of caustic Dip, which can erase Toons from the picture.

This update is the latest in a string of attraction overhauls completed or in the works. Disney has updated the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction to remove certain scenes and revamped the Jungle Cruise attraction to be more culturally sensitive. The company is now working on a Princess and the Frog makeover for the popular Splash Mountain ride, which is based on the controversial movie Song of the South.

Magic Key perks

The collectible and refillable Magic Key popcorn bucket arrived at the Disneyland Resort over the weekend. The bucket is $11, offer $1.50 refills through November 10.

Three Merriest Nites sell out, two remain

Three of the new Disney's Merriest Nites events at Disneyland have sold out since the event went on sale last week, leaving just two dates to choose from:

Dates and Times Ticket Price
Thursday, November 11 Sold Out
Tuesday, November 16 $165
Tuesday, November 30 $165
Tuesday, December 7 Sold Out
Thursday, December 9 Sold Out

Disney describes this new after-hours event as being “6 holiday parties in one,” with six themed areas inside the park, each with a Disney character host. The event will also include a performance of A Christmas Fantasy Parade, special photo opportunities, event-exclusive merchandise and food offerings, and appearances by Disney characters in their holiday finery.

Tickets on sale via the Disneyland website.

Don't let Thanksgiving sneak up on you

If you are planning to visit the Disneyland Resort for the Thanksgiving holiday, next Sunday, September 26, is the 60-day mark for making dining reservations.

Theme park reservations have already been open for a month, and both parks still show full availability, so make sure you make that reservation first. Then, check the Disneyland website to book your first-choice for dinner.

The headline holiday event in past years has been the Disneyland Hotel Thanksgiving buffet, served in the Grand Ballroom of the Disneyland Hotel. We don't know whether to expect this offering to return for 2021, but it's usually announced sometime in October.

We don't know if the Disney Family Thanksgiving Feast has survived the pandemic. MousePlanet file photo.

Even if you're holding out for that option, you can make a backup reservation. Popular locations include Storyteller's Cafe at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel, or Goofy's Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel; or a more formal meal at the Napa Rose restaurant.

Inside the theme parks, Disneyland's Carnation Cafe and Cafe Orleans have traditionally offered a Thanksgiving meal for the holiday, though their menus won't be released until much closer to the holiday.

If you're spending Thanksgiving in Disney California Adventure, consider the Carthay Circle Restaurant or the popular Lamplight Lounge for a more traditional meal, or nibble your way through the Festival of Holidays booths for a progressive dinner option.

Whatever you choose, you can book reservations for most locations online using the Disneyland website or app. We'll share menu specifics as we have them, but we don't want to let the holiday sneak up on you.

This and That…

…”it's a small world” will be closed October 24 through November 11 to install the holiday overlay. The holiday season officially kicks off November 12, 2021.

Disney will close “it's a small world” for three weeks to install the holiday lights. MousePlanet file photo.

2021-2022
  • Halloween Time – September 3 through October 31.
  • Oogie Boogie Bash at Disney California Adventure – select nights September 9 to October 31. The event is now sold out.
  • Gay Days (unofficial event) – September 17–19. More information on the event website.
  • Dapper Day (unofficial event) – Fall Outing to Disneyland scheduled for November 13-14. More information on the event website.
  • 2022 D23 Expo – September 9–11, 2022 at the Anaheim Convention Center.
  • Disney's Merriest Nights at Disneyland –  select nights November 11 – December 9. More information on the event website.

Postponed events:

  • Disneyland After Dark: Villains Nite – postponed from Thursday, April 30, 2020. Visitors who had already purchased a ticket to the sold-out event will automatically receive a ticket for the rescheduled event once a date is selected. However, anyone who purchased a ticket and prefers a refund can call (714) 781-4636 to request one.
  • Disneyland After Dark: Star Wars Nite – postponed from Thursday, August 27, 2020. Visitors who had already purchased a ticket to the sold-out event will automatically receive a ticket for the rescheduled event once a date is selected. However, anyone who purchased a ticket and prefers a refund can call (714) 781-4636 to request one.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Current Discounts and Promotions

Disneyland prices as of February 2020.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.
