60th anniversary celebration to run through September 5, 2016
Disney's first announcement in what proved to be a very busy week was to provide the official end date of the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration. The marketing promotion will continue through September 5, 2016, ending after Labor Day and the 2016 Disneyland Half Marathon weekend.

The announcement has prompted people to ask what will happen to the three nighttime shows created for the 60th anniversary (“World of Color – Celebrate”; Paint the Night parade, and the “Disneyland Forever” fireworks show). While Disney hasn't provided an official answer, it's almost certain that both the new fireworks show and the parade will continue until Disney has a really good reason to replace them. But if you want to make absolutely certain you'll see all three new shows, you have almost another year to visit.
Disneyland Railroad. Rivers of America, Fantasmic scheduled for one-year hiatus when Star Wars Land construction begins
Friday afternoon, the Disneyland Resort officially notified cast members at the impacted locations of the coming closures, then shared details about the plans via a posting on the Disney Parks Blog. According to that announcement, all of the following are set to close at the end of the day on January 10, 2016, to allow for construction access to the 14-acre expansion site:
- The Disneyland Railroad. and all four stations
- The Fantasmic! nighttime spectacular
- All Rivers of America watercraft:
- Mark Twain Riverboat
- Sailing Ship Columbia
- Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes
- Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island
Disney says that all of these attractions will reopen in the future. While the announcement did not say how long the attractions will be closed, a spokesperson told MousePlanet the closures are expected to last more than a year.
The Mark Twain and Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes are temporarily closing beginning January 10, 2016, because of construction of the Star Wars Land expansion. MousePlanet file photo.
David Koenig previously wrote about plans to permanently close the Big Thunder Ranch complex, which includes the petting farm, barbecue restaurant and “Jamboree” area.
By our rough estimate, more than 300 Disneyland cast members are impacted by the temporary and permanent closures, though Disney would not confirm that number. Disney did confirm that all cast members will be offered transfers to other roles, which is the company's usual practice when employees are displaced due to location closures. It seems to us that this might prove more challenging when dealing with employees in specialized roles, like the petting zoo animal handlers and the Fantasmic stage technicians.
The Rivers of America is again closing to exploration when Star Wars Land construction begins in 2016. MousePlanet file photo.
Disney's announcement did not explain why the Disneyland Railroad and the entire Rivers of America complex must be shuttered during this phase of the construction. The Orange County Register received confirmation from Disney that the Rivers will be drained, and the water saved in storage as was the case when Paradise Bay and the Submarine Lagoon were refurbished.
The Disneyland Railroad tracks run behind the Big Thunder Ranch area, land which is used in the Star Wars Land expansion. Imagineers faced a similar problem when they built Toontown outside the existing park berm, but simply constructed an entrance tunnel underneath the Disneyland Railroad tracks. That worked for Toontown, but is not an ideal solution for the already-tricky transition between the wilds of Frontierland and the frontier of unexplored space.
Based on building permits filed with the City of Anaheim, it is possible that Disneyland intends to modify the path of the Disneyland Railroad, perhaps moving the tracks to cut the corner across the Big Thunder Ranch area. This is complete speculation on our part, but may explain the need for a year-long closure.
The closure of the Rivers of America may also be a sign that Disney plans to alter the banks of that waterway, perhaps to make room for the rumored path between Critter Country and Star Wars Land.
When asked, a Disney spokesperson said only that they have nothing to announce at this time.
Season of the Force debuts November 16 at Disneyland
Today's breaking news about the construction-related closures of the Disneyland Railroad, Fantasmic, and the Rivers of America attractions was actually the second story in a Disney Parks Blog article providing official dates and details of its Star Wars: Season of the Force seasonal event that begins November 16 at Disneyland.
While you're making plans to catch the final performances of Fantasmic before its year-long hiatus begins in January, you can also schedule a stop in Tomorrowland to take in the Season of the Force offerings.

Star Wars Launch Bay
The highlight of the promotion is the Star Wars Launch Bay, currently under construction in part of the former Innoventions building (now known as the Tomorrowland Expo Center) in Tomorrowland. Star Wars will occupy most of the lower floor of the building, with the Avengers remaining on the upper level.
From Disney's description, it appears that the outer ring of the building will be devoted to a series of four galleries, featuring props, costumes and concept art from around the Star Wars universe:
Gallery | Description |
---|---|
Dark Side Gallery | Get a look at authentic pieces of stormtrooper armor as well as famous Sith lightsabers once wielded by masters of the dark side. |
Light Side Gallery | Explore a gallery filled with Rebel flight helmets and lightsabers once wielded by Jedi Knights. |
Preview Gallery | See props from the upcoming film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. |
Starship Gallery | Discover models of famous starships and their pilots from throughout the Star Wars saga. |
There are two meet-and-greet opportunities inside the Star Wars Launch Bay, with a chance to pose with Darth Vader or Chewbacca. We've previously reported that Disney Visa Card holders will have an exclusive character meet-and-greet inside the Star Wars Launch Bay, but we do not know which character(s) will be present.
Not to be left out, Disney Interactive will have a piece of the Launch Bay real estate, with a demonstration of Disney Games. Gamers can play park-exclusive Toy Box levels of Disney Infinity 3.0, which should prove popular with the annual passholder crowd. From building permits filed with the city of Anaheim, we also know there will be at least one gift shop inside the Star Wars Launch Bay.

Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple
The popular Jedi Training Academy show is being updated in December to include characters from the Disney XD series, Star Wars Rebels. We previously reported that Disneyland tried a two-day test of enrolling potential Padawans in the morning, rather than picking them at the start of each show. If the park decides to implement this change, we'd expect it to begin with the debut of the new show.
Tomorrowland Theater
Disney is reopening the Tomorrowland Theater during Season of the Force, and presenting “favorite scenes from classic Star Wars films.” We can't be the only ones wondering why Disneyland isn't offering a sneak preview trailer of the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens film, at least until the film opens on December 18.

Hyperspace Mountain and Star Tours: The Adventures Continue
Disneyland's latest attraction overlay debuts November 16, when Hyperspace Mountain opens. Disney says you will “climb aboard a reimagined Space Mountain attraction, in which guests will join an X-wing starfighter battle.”
Star Tours: The Adventures Continue will feature a new scene “inspired” by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Disney has also promised “special themed food and beverage, merchandise and entertainment,” so expect additional details as November 16 approaches.
2016 Military Salute details
Disney has released details of the 2016 Military Salute for Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
If you have taken advantage of this offer in the past, you may have noticed that the new offer is valid during the 2016 calendar year, and not the usual October September Disney fiscal year. According to the folks over at Military Disney Tips, this change was made so that military personnel would have time to receive their tickets in time to make Fastpass+ reservations at Walt Disney World when the 60-day window opens. Previously, military personnel couldn't get their tickets in time to make advance FP+ reservations, limiting them to same-day reservations.
We've summarized the offers below, and you can find all of the detailed terms and conditions on our MousePad discussion forum.
Discount Type | Description |
---|---|
Ticket discounts |
From October 12, 2015 through December 16, 2016, active and retired U.S. military personnel (including active and retired members of the United States Coast Guard, National Guard and Reservists) or their spouses can purchase: Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $143 each [an increase of $11 from the 2014-2015 offer.] Disneyland tickets may be used January 3, 2016, through December 19, 2016, except that the tickets may not be used March 20, 2016 April 1, 2016. Active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets for themselves and up to five additional family members or friends. No more than six Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or spouse) pursuant to this offer. All tickets and options are non-transferable and must be used by December 19, 2016. |
Hotel discounts |
The new offer is valid most nights from January 3 through December 19, 2016. Like the ticket offer, the hotel discounts are not valid March 20, 2016 through April 1, 2016. Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call 714-520-7088 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. The website Military Disney Tips.com says the offer is 30-40%, based on room category. Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member. |
Mickey's Halloween Party tips
Mickey's Halloween Party began its 2015 season this past weekend, with the opening event on Friday, September 25. With 16 more events to go, we published tips and tricks to make the most of your experience at this popular annual event. We encourage you to read the full article as you make your plans for the event, but wanted to add a few notes to the information presented there:
- If your group (of any age) is into characters, make the Toontown Treat pre-party your first stop. On Friday, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, Pluto, Chip and Dale were all out in their Halloween costumes, and it's a great way to get your photos during daylight hours. The pre-party opens 2 hours before the official event start, and, while it does not appear on the event schedule, enough people know about it that it can quickly become crowded.
- If you are a Disneyland Resort annual passholder, be sure to stop by the Passholder Treat Station at the Main Street Opera House for a special gift. On Friday, the AP treat was a Disneyland 60th anniversary drawstring backpack, and a diamond-shaped sweet. The passholder treat station is open from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. during Sunday through Thursday events, and from 6:00 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday events.
- Goofy's Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel has extended its operating hours and opened up more reservation slots for the remaining Friday night events. The restaurant will now open at 3:00 p.m. on Friday October 2, 9, 16, and 23. This will allow you to grab an early dinner with characters, and still make it into the event with enough time to visit the Toontown Pre-Party.
This was the status of each event night as of publication:
Available: September 28, 30; October 27, and 29
Sold out: September 25; October 2, 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 22, 23, 25, and 31
MahaloWeen 2015
Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar will present a MahaloWeen event on Monday and Tuesday, October 12 and 13. This is the third event like this hosted at the bar – including the 2014 MahaloWeen party and this year's Diamond Celebration Luau. Like the August event, this party will be held on the Magic Kingdom Lawn adjacent to the Trader Sam's complex, and not in the bar itself.
There are a total of four parties, with two 90-minute events hosted each evening: 6:00–7:30 p.m., or 8:00–9:30 p.m. This change should make it easier for people to attend on a weeknight.
This new tiki mug will be released at the Trader Sam's MahaloWeen event. Photo © Disney.
Tickets are $150 per person (up $25 from the 2014 event), and includes appetizers, two drink tickets and a performance by Tahitian Fire Dancers. Each participant will receive three souvenirs, and the artists will be on hand to sign the mug and print:
- Commemorative “MahaloWeen” kukui nut lei
- Tiki-themed event print on parchment paper
- 1 special edition tiki glass (which looks like Jack Skellington to us, though Disney just calls it “a fierce-looking jack-o'-lantern carved into a glazed coconut”)
Purchase tickets online at the Disneyland website, or call (714) 781-3463. At the time of publication, all four event were available.

- 2016 Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend – September 1–4.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it's best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
School Holidays
Notable school holidays that may impact park attendance. If you know of any other holidays that should be listed here, please send us an e-mail (link).
2015
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 15–16. Expect unusually large attendance levels October 16–20 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- Hawaii public schools Fall Break – October 5–9.
- Nevada Day (observed) – Friday, October 30. A school holiday for our neighbors to the northeast creates a 3-day weekend and usually adds to the Halloween weekend crowds.
- Thanksgiving Break – November 23–27. Many local schools close for the entire week of Thanksgiving.
- Winter Break – December 21, 2015 – January 8, 2016. Most local schools are closed.
2016
- Spring Break(s) – March 14 – April 8. Most local schools are closed one week during this period. Expect the majority of school closures—and crowds—the weeks immediately before and after Easter Sunday, March 27.
- Local School Holiday – Monday, March 28. Most local schools not already on Spring Break will be closed for Cesar Chavez Day.
- Nevada Day (observed) – Friday, October 28. A school holiday for our neighbors to the northeast creates a 3-day weekend and usually adds to the Halloween weekend crowds. Some Nevada schools take the entire week off as a Fall Break.
- Utah Education Association convention (UEA, a.k.a. “Utah Escapes to Anaheim”) – October 20–21. Expect unusually large attendance levels October 19–23 as Utah students and families take advantage of a 4-day weekend created by their school's participation in a state education convention. Not all Utah schools or teachers close for or attend UEA, but the impact on the resort is usually noticeable enough to mention.
- Thanksgiving Break – November 21–25. Many local schools close for the entire week of Thanksgiving.
- Winter Break – December 19, 2016 – January 6, 2017. Most schools close only two of these three weeks, but some districts close all three weeks due to the Saturday Christmas.

Current Discounts & Promotions
Disneyland prices as of February 2015.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency.

There is no charge to register for the walk, but walkers (ages 3 and up) must commit to raise $65 before the event. 2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132) 2016 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($143) |
2014–2015 Disney Military Promotional 3–Day Park Hopper Ticket ($132) A discounted price offered to Eligible Service Members or their spouses. The 2014–2015 U.S. Armed Forces discount is valid through October 3, 2015. Under this program, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Tickets for $132 each. For the purpose of this offer, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including the National Guard, Reservists, and the U.S. Coast Guard. Valid military identification will be required for purchase. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base or other at participating U.S. military sales outlets. The tickets are not available for sale at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Disney has also clarified that the “Military member (or spouse) must accompany the persons using these tickets for Theme Park admission,” which means you can not purchase these tickets and give them to someone who will be visiting without you present. Unlike past years, this ticket is not blocked out on the 4th of July. Discounts for everyone |
Purchase with Purchase offers – Disneyland Resort shops frequently offer a reduced–price souvenir (often a tote bag, watch, or blanket) with a qualifying minimum purchase. These are offered at Disney-operated stores only, and selection may vary by location. Recently, Disney has begun allowing customers to purchase more than one of the offers in a qualifying transaction, so if you spend $40 or more you can buy both items currently available if you wish. If you're a passholder, the minimum purchase is calculated after your discount, and your discount does not apply to the promotional item. Current offers:
Landry's Select Club – members of the Landry's Select Club get priority seating at the Rainforest Cafe when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days). This club replaces the former Rainforest Cafe Safari Club, and runs on a point-based system that gives you a $25 gift certificate after you spend $250. Membership now costs $25, but comes with a $25 birthday reward. We recommend that you prepurchase your membership before your visit so you can take advantage of the priority seating benefit. ESPNZone MVP Club – membership in the MVP Club does not offer any discounts on food. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25 percent increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). You must register online and your membership card will then be mailed to you within two weeks. The card must then be activated at any ESPNZone by the person who signed up for the card and ID will be required (link). Character Dining Vouchers – discounted character dining vouchers are available for purchase online, in advance of your trip, through Get Away Travel. |

As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney's information is correct.
