Mickey’s new moves | New military discount | Holiday schedule update | Meet the new ambassadors | This and That…
Mickey’s new moves
Disney Dance Crew opened at Disney California Adventure Park last week, featuring the new “talking” Mickey Mouse character used for some live-performance shows in Walt Disney World. Disney describes the show as a “high-energy hip hop dancing exhibition,” in which “two dance crews compete in an action-packed dance-off to see which team has the best moves.”
The happily-ever-after ending comes when Mickey Mouse arrives and “unites the two crews” by showing off his own hip hop dance moves. The show is performed on the Hollywood Backlot Stage and replaced Drawn to the Magic, another live show featuring three singing “animators.”
Disney posted a small clip of the show on the Disney Parks Blog last week (link), showing Mickey moving his mouth and blinking. While the Blog says that Mickey will be available for photos and autographs after the performance, MousePlanet reader Mike P. said that Mickey neither blinked nor spoke after the show, speculating that perhaps Mickey’s “enhanced abilities” are reserved for the live show.
Disney Dance Crew is performed Wednesday – Sunday at 12:30, 1:30, 2:20, 3:10, 4:25 and 5:15 pm.
The Orange County Register reported last week that DCA’s other new show, Disney Channel Rocks, has been delayed a month and will now debut on November 26 (link). The current show, High School Musical 3: Senior Year Right Here! Right Now!, has been extended through November 25.
New military discount
A new military discount offer began Sunday at the Disneyland Resort, offering active or retired U.S. military personnel the opportunity to purchase a Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Ticket for $99, a substantial savings over the regular three-day parkhopper, which is currently priced at $206 for adults. Based on past offers, Disney defines eligible service members as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including active members of the National Guard or Reservists, and active and retired members of the U.S. Coast Guard; this offer also includes military spouses with military ID.
This discount is available at on-base MWR/ITT offices, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse), or where the tickets are purchased. Tickets must be purchased by September 28, 2011 and used by October 1, 2011. The ticket has the following blockout dates: December 24, 2010 through January 1, 2011; February 18–21, 2011; April 17–23, 2011; and July 1–4, 2011.
As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details regarding use and eligibility before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day.
Thanks to MousePlanet reader CMHusband for alerting us to the new promotion.
[Update] Disney has issued a press release about this offer with a few more details. Active and retired U.S. military personnel may purchase up to six tickets, but one of the six (6) Tickets purchased must be for use by the eligible service member or his/her spouse. Disneyland is also extending a 40% discount on rooms at the three Disneyland Resort Hotels, subject to availability and other restrictions. Ths offer is valid for stays most nights now through Oct. 1, 2011, with blockout days or Nov. 24-Nov. 26, 2010, and Dec. 26-Dec. 31, 2010. Valid military ID is required at check in. Contact your travel agent or call the Walt Disney Travel Company at (714) 520-5045.
Holiday schedule update
With the Holiday Time promotion just around the corner, readers are anxious to learn the dates of some of the annual holiday events. Please note that few of these dates are official yet, but this is the best information available at publication time:
Christmas parade taping, November 6 & 7
Disney never officially confirms the dates that the West Coast segments of the annual holiday parade will be filmed at Disneyland, but DanceTheMagic.com, a Web site that offers travel packages to dance groups hoping to participate in the filming, lists the dates as November 6 and 7 (link). Keeping in mind that the filming changed at least once from the originally announced dates in 2009, we don’t encourage readers to make a special trip just to see the filming. There is no indication yet as to which, if any, celebrities will be on hand for the filming. You can get more information about any schedule changes as we learn about them on our MousePad discussion forums (link).
Candlelight Processional, December 4 & 5
Again, Disney has not yet formally announced the dates for the annual Candlelight Processional, but members of the cast member choir that sings at the annual event tell us it will be Saturday and Sunday, December 4 & 5. The narrator has yet to be announced, and there has been no word if Disney will offer dining packages this year.
Cast member holiday parties, December 13 & 14
Disneyland usually closes early one or two nights each holiday season for the annual cast member parties, but the dates have not yet been announced. The calendar on Disneyland.com shows the park closing early on December 13 and 14, and one source confirms that these are the cast party dates. We’ll post an update once Disney informs cast members of the dates; an announcement is expected sometime this week. You can get more information about any schedule changes as we learn about them on our MousePad discussion forums (link).
Holiday entertainment, starts November 12
We’ll have a more detailed look at the Holiday Time offerings in a future article, but you can expect the first performances of the “Believe… in Holiday Magic” fireworks and the Christmas Fantasy Parade on Friday, November 12 as Disneyland officially kicks off the holiday season. Sharp-eyed reader GrumpyGoofyGuy noticed that the Disneyland Web site indicates that the park will present the holiday fireworks at 8:40pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, much earlier than the traditional 9:25pm performance time.
Meet the new ambassadors
Disneyland Resort President George A. Kalogridis announced that René Torrico, 29, and Jolie Hales, 28, will serve as the 2011–2012 Disneyland Resort Ambassador team. Torrico was most recently the head teller at Partners Federal Credit Union; Hales worked as a Youth Education Series facilitator and guest performance coordinator.
The Ambassador program dates back to 1965, when Walt Disney selected guest relations hostess Julie Reihm to serve as the Disneyland Ambassador to the World during the park’s 10th anniversary. Reihm helped handle interview and public appearance requests, traveled to five continents to represent Walt Disney and Disneyland, and served as VIP host for luminaries who visited Disneyland during the anniversary celebration. The position proved so valuable that an Ambassador or Ambassador team has represented Disneyland ever since. Walt Disney World and the international Disney resorts also all have Ambassador programs. You can read more about the Ambassador program and the selection process in this 2009 MousePlanet article (link).
This and That…
…I reported last week about a new tactic being used by Unite HERE Local 11 in their ongoing contract dispute with Disney, and noted that a representative from the union declined to comment on the group’s activities (link). After reading about the story on MousePlanet, the Orange County Register‘s Sarah Tully also contacted the union. This time union spokesperson Leah Shelton provided a comment defending the group’s tactics, denying that the fliers are related to the contract dispute and telling the Register “This is a serious problem that affects anybody whose children go to Disneyland and that includes our members” (link). Anaheim Police Department spokesman Sgt. Rick Martinez told the Register said the union ” is misrepresenting the accurate facts by listing numbers and not specifically what is taking place.”
MousePlanet readers reportedly encountered union protesters outside of Disneyland again this weekend. One reader said that one of the demonstrators admitted that he didn’t even work for Disney, but was instead an LAX employee and member of Local 11 who was brought in to participate in the Disney protest.
…The Disney Vacation Club announced last week that it has sold out of inventory at the Villas at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel, the first Disney-owned time share property in California. When the Disneyland Resort property was announced in 2008, Disney seemed certain demand for the units would outstrip available inventory, and so created a “founders circle” program by which potential owners could guarantee themselves the opportunity to purchase an ownership interest, known as “points” in DVC-parlance, in the California property by first purchasing points at one of the other properties in Walt Disney World. Many DVC members were led to believe that the Founders Circle members would likely purchase all of the available inventory at the Grand Californian property before sales opened to the general public. That turned out not to be the case, and it took nearly two years for the property to sell out. Disney has since begun construction on Aulani, the first DVC property in Hawai’i. Phase one of the villas in Ko Olina, Hawai‘i are due to open in August. DVC also has East coast inventory available three Walt Disney World resorts; Bay Lake Tower, Animal Kingdom Villas and Saratoga Springs Resort.
…You can enter to win a pair of tickets to a private holiday party for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Major League Baseball team hosted at Disneyland on Thursday, November 18 by completing an entry form and answering 15 Angels baseball trivia questions on the team’s 50th Anniversary Web site (link). The entry form says “completed questions and/or correct answers are not required to be eligible for entry,” so you may have a shot even if you don’t know your RBIs from your ERAs.
…The Disney Parks Blog is hosting an ElecTRONica meet-up on Thursday night. RSVP instructions were posted to the Disney Parks Blog last week and the event is now full; if you sent in a request and did not receive a reply, check the published RSVP list to see if you were selected (link). Unlike past meet-ups, there is no “bonus” component to this event beyond being able to experience ElecTRONica while the park is otherwise closed to the public. Past meet-ups have featured panel discussions or other “behind-the-scenes” bonuses, but such offerings are not practical with larger meet-ups like have been requested by people shut out of the smaller gatherings.
…Ocean Spray and the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts announced a partnership last week that will bring Craisins-brand dried cranberries to the domestic Disney theme parks and aboard the ships of the Disney Cruise Line. Anyone who has attended one of the Mickey’s Halloween Party events at Disneyland this year probably already figured something was in the works, as Craisins were one of the “healthy” alternatives offered at the trick-or-treat stations. In addition to cranberry-inspired menu items and baked goods at various restaurants, expect to see Craisins sold at fruit carts, and to find Chip and Dale-themed Craisins packaging inside gift shops. Ocean Spray will also build cranberry bog displays during the 2011 Disney’s California Food & Wine Festival, and will demonstrate how cranberries are harvested.
…Disney Traditions artist Jim Shore will introduce two new Disney-exclusive figures at a product release & signing at the Disneyland Resort on November 20 & 21 (link). The figures are Minnie Mouse dressed as a Tour Guide Hostess, and Mickey Mouse dressed as a Railroad Engineer. On Saturday, Jim Shore will be at the China Closet inside Disneyland Park from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and then at the World of Disney Store in Downtown Disney from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.. On Sunday, the artist will be at DCA’s Off the Page store from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
…The Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique has added a “Tangled Transformation” to their list of makeover options. Starting in November, the new look, themed to Disney’s animated feature Tangled, will be offered at the boutique in Fantasyland. Pricing was not available at press time, but you can call 714-781-7895 for more information and to make an appointment.
…If you’ve ever been interested in taking a Disney Institute class, here’s your chance to take advantage of a two-for-one offer for Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders. Register for one of the select one-day programs listed below, and you can bring a friend or colleague at no additional charge. Each one-day class is $499, and you must register online to take advantage of this offer (link). The classes and dates are as follows:
- Disney’s Approach to Leadership Excellence – Monday, December 6, 2010
- Disney’s Approach to People Management – Tuesday, December 7, 2010
- Disney’s Approach to Quality Service – Wednesday, December 8, 2010
- Disney’s Approach to Brand Loyalty – Thursday, December 9, 2010
- Disney’s Approach to Inspiring Creativity – Friday, December 10, 2010
…Visitors planning trips to the Disneyland Resort should make a point to check the Current Refurbishment/Attraction Closures section each week for the most recent updates. The Disneyland Resort Web site currently only publishes refurbishment information about six weeks in advance. Be sure to check the most recent Park Update (link) for the latest changes, as MousePlanet does not edit past Park Updates to reflect changes.

There is no indication yet as to which, if any, celebrities will be on hand for the filming.

- Fall 2011 MouseAdventure – no details yet. Visit MouseAdventure.com to sign up for our newsletter.
We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau Web site (link). When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the Resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts & Promotions
Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts.
If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line (link). Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Three Day Park Hopper – Regularly $206/$185 |
Disney Military Promotional 3-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($99) – A discounted price offered to active or retired U.S. military personnel or their spouses. Based on past offers, Disney defines “Eligible Service Members” as active or retired members of the U.S. military, including active members of the National Guard or Reservists and active or retired members of the U.S. Coast Guard. This discount is available at MWR/ITT offices at your military base, or at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Valid military ID is required. The price is the same for adults and children, and total of six tickets may be purchased per military member, regardless of who purchases the tickets (the member or their spouse). Tickets must be purchased by September 28, 2011 and used by 10/1/2011. The ticket has the following blockout dates: 12/24/10-1/1/11; 2/18/11-2/21/11; 4/17/11-4/23/11; and 7/1/11-7/4/11. As far as we can tell, there is no “fuse” on this ticket, so you may have more than the standard 13 days from first use to use the remaining two admissions, but we highly recommend you contact your base MWR/ITT office for more details before making travel plans. Please note that this ticket is not a “bonus” ticket, and so does not include an early admission day. Advance Purchase 3-day Park Hopper Bonus Ticket ($186/$165) – A discounted price for advance purchase through the Internet or select dealers. Available at the Disneyland Web site (link) where shipping is included if you order more than 10 days prior to your travel date. Disney Stores (California), Safeway supermarkets (California and Arizona), and certain travel agents may also sell these tickets. If purchased from AAA, the tickets come with free parking at the Mickey & Friends parking garage (a $15/day value). |
|
Four Day Park Hopper – Regularly $231/$199 |
Costco 4-Day Park Hopper Ticket ($199) – A special offer for Costco members who are also residents of Southern California, this ticket is currently not sold online but must be purchased in Costco stores. Unlike most other park hopper tickets, this ticket has no “fuse” – you can use the first admission today, and have until May 31, 2011 to use the remaining admission days before the ticket expires. The ticket is blocked out August 22-23 and the entire period between Dec 15, 2010 – Jan 1, 2011, and has an “upgrade value” of $151. The ticket states that visitors “Must reside within ZIP codes 90000-93599” and that “Proof of residency required upon redemption.” The ticket you purchase at Costco is a valid admission ticket, and you can take it directly to a main entrance gate to use it. We’ve been told that, to prevent the unauthorized “transfer” of tickets between visitors (i.e., you use the first two days of the ticket and give it to a friend to use the second two days), visitors will be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used for admission, and to show ID with that same name upon subsequent admissions. Obviously minor children will be exempt from the ID requirement, but will also be required to write their name on the ticket when it is first used. Adults should plan to have ID with them to use the ticket. Disney Visa Discounted Stroller Rental – If you have a Disney Visa card you can rent up to two strollers at a discount of 50%. This offer is valid only at the Main Gate rental location between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.
Rainforest Cafe Safari Club – Members of the Rainforest Cafe get priority seating when available (which makes a huge difference on busy days), and a 10% discount on entrees for up to four people. Additionally, after signing up, your membership card will be mailed to you and be accompanied by a $10 award good for your next visit to a Rainforest Cafe. However, once a member you can make an online reservation for your party up to three days in advance and will get a 25% increase in points purchased when playing games in the Sports Arena (and 40 bonus points at activation). Visit our Annual Passholders Blockout Dates page to see more dates. You can see future calendar schedules at Disneyland. As always, specifics are subject to change without notice (or occasionally, without us noticing) so when information conflicts between what is presented here and that presented by Disney, it is best to assume Disney’s information is correct.
Visit the Park Hours section of our Disneyland Park guide for additional details about Magic Morning and Toontown Morning Madness, including available attractions.
