Feature: Gawrsh! Bill Farmer talks about Goofy!
Steven Ng caught up with Bill Farmer at this past summer’s NFFC Disneyana Fan Club Show and Sale.
Bill and Steven talked a little about the Disneyana Show & Sale before turning to a discussion of the efforts to get June Foray into the upcoming Smurfs movie. June originally performed the voice for Jokey Smurf, but in the new movie that role is going to Paul Reubens (a.k.a. Pee-Wee Herman and Star Tours’ Captain Rex). The Facebook campaign for “Smurf Justice for June Foray” was started by Bob Bergen (current voice of Warner Brothers character Tweety Bird). For Disney, Foray also portrayed Grandmother Fa in Mulan.
Bill described the process by which he went from being a stand-up comedian in Dallas, TX to doing Disney character voices. His first role was in the TV special “Disney’s Doggone Valentine” in 1987.
Bill reminisced about the late Wayne Allwine, the longtime voice of Mickey Mouse, and the late Eddie Carroll, longtime voice of Jiminy Cricket and a friend of the MouseStation.
Bill has done many voices over the years, including most of the Warner Brothers characters and even Kermit the Frog. He’s also done a lot of Automated Dialogue Replacement (ADR) and background voices. Bill was the voice of the racetrack announcer in Secretariat.
Bill also talked about the origin of the “Goofy yell,” sometimes also known as the “Goofy holler.” It originated in the short “The Art of Skiing,” and was originally done by a yodeller named Hannès Schroll, who performed the yell while Pinto Colvig performed Goofy’s speaking voice in the short.

Sue Coppola wrote to say that she’s glad that we’re back and to pass along her complaints about the new “Let the Memories Begin” campaign and the lack of a 40th anniversary celebration for Walt Disney World. It launched a good discussion about the new campaign and Mark and Mike’s takes on what they think that Disney should do in terms of celebrating park or resort anniversaries.
Mark Daniel Martinez posted on our Facebook page about Episode 412 that he’s glad that we’re back, but he thinks that we may be overthinking the “Let the Memories Begin” campaign. Mark noted that “we overthink it so that you don’t have to.”
Paul Schnebelen wrote with his complaints about the new campaign, noting that many of those videos and lots more like them can be found on YouTube, so he doesn’t need to see them in ad campaigns. He’s also upset about the continued homogenization of the product across all Disney resorts in the ad campaign. He’d like to see separate campaigns for each resort. Finally, he’s disappointed at the lack of a celebration for Walt Disney World’s 40th anniversary.
Alexis Bratengeier sent us multiple tweets when we first went on hiatus lamenting the fact that we’d be gone for a while. Mark had Mike read the tweets because Alexis noted that he’s on Team Nemo.
Sean Jones welcomed our return on Facebook, and hinted that he may be working on a new “@ the Station” comic. We can’t wait.

Joey in Tucson also left us a lengthy voicemail after he returned from a trip to the Disneyland Resort shortly before we came back. He wanted to call in the highlights of his Columbus Day weekend trip. The weather was hot and the park was crowded, but he had a great time. He really loved ElecTRONica, which was “loud but fun.” His favorite part was the images of the lightcycles speeding around you as you enter Hollywood Pictures Backlot, which reminded him of the sequence aboard the old Peoplemover.
Joey really loved the upgrades to Haunted Mansion Holiday, including the new animations on the moon. He was disappointed, though, by the decrease in number and disappearance of the decor halloween pumpkins along Main Street and in the Hub. That was also because his favorite pumpkin (Roger Rabbit) was damaged.
He also had a brief report about Ariel’s Grotto at DCA, and about issues with ordering “Bluetinis” because they’re expecting the order to be a “Blue Glowtini.” We’re not sure how they could make that connenction.
