Featured Topic – the Mickey Mouse Penthouse, with special guest Tim Jones

In this week’s feature, Tim Jones joined Mark and Mike to discuss his wonderful stay in the Mickey Mouse Penthouse at the Disneyland Hotel.

Tim won the stay in the penthouse at a conference of Disney-certified travel agents. He won one night in the penthouse suite, two nights in another room at the Disneyland hotel, and four four-day park hopper passes, which covered his family of four.

They were taken to their room by a guide. The room appeared to be as large as five standard hotel rooms. There are two bedrooms, three bathrooms, a dining room, a bar and a big family room.

The two Mickey-red leather chairs were the first thing in the suite that caught Tim’s eye. Photo by Tim Jones.

The guide gave them a tour of the suite, beginning in Mickey’s Pad, the children’s room in the suite. It had a really cool backlit table for drawing artwork. The bathroom attached to that bedroom actually has tile grout that glows in the dark.

This quote reads “Mickey Mouse is made up entirely of curves and that’s very reassuring. People have had millions of years experience with curved objects and they’ve never been hurt by them. It’s the sharp and pointed things that give you trouble.” -John Hench. Photo by Tim Jones.

Over the bar is a large quote about the design of Mickey Mouse. For some reason, Mark couldn’t guess that it was by Disney Legend John Hench. In the living room, there were three large-screen TVs, so that everyone can see what they want.

In the master bedroom, there is a mirror that becomes a television, with a remote that you can use to watch from the bathtub. Next, they went back to the magic mirror just inside the front door, which they had not noticed the first time. The mirror interacts with the suite’s residents at various times during the day.

The suite has a fabulous view of the nighttime “Remember…” fireworks, and the music is piped in. Tim and his family later got a VIP viewing of the fireworks from inside the park, and Tim said that the viewing from the room was even better.

There is a hidden Mickey in the master bedroom’s steam shower that can only be seen when the steam is used. (Tim noted that it was perhaps the best shower he had ever taken in his life.)

Tim and his family also received access to the concierge lounge for the entirety of their stay.

This was Tim’s first trip to Disneyland, and the differences between Disneyland and Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom was a bit disorienting. They really enjoyed not having as far to walk.

Tim noted especially that the monorail is much smaller, but is more of a thrill ride, and that Pirates is so much better than at Walt Disney World. He also noted that California Screamin’ was one of the best coasters that he ever rode. The only East Coast coaster that comes close, according to Tim, is Expedition Everest.
