The Movie

The Pacifier is a movie that falls into the classic “fish
out of water” genre. Vin Diesel’s character is a Navy SEAL who is
sent to protect a group of children who are in danger because of their
father’s work on a top secret government project. Alex Stroup’s review of the
theatrical version (link)
provides a good summary of the plusses and minuses of The Pacifier.
It’s a simple story with not a whole lot of twists or turns, and makes
for a movie that most of the family can watch together.

The Goodies

The extras included on the disc are interesting, including some deleted
scenes, a blooper reel, a couple of behind-the-scenes vignettes with star
Vin Diesel and supporting actor Brad Garrett (from Everybody Loves
Raymond
), and a commentary track with the director Adam Shankman,
and the two writers Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant.

The blooper reel is especially entertaining for children, since it shows
cast members flubbing lines and making strange faces. It goes by quickly
though, and it was hard for me to determine exactly what the goofs were
in some of the clips.

The behind-the-scenes segments will be of interest to Vin Diesel and
Brad Garrett fans. Garrett’s comedy background is highlighted in his humorous
off-screen asides, especially related to the wrestling outfit he had to
endure in one of his scenes. I find Garrett to be a bit over-the-top at
times and so was glad that the segment did not go on too long.

I enjoyed “On Set With Mr. Diesel: Action Hero and Nice Guy”
more. Various cast members discuss Diesel’s attitude on set, and there
is also footage of him interacting with the babies off-camera that I found
endearing.

The audio commentary was mildly entertaining, but I’m not familiar with
the people on it and they didn’t provide a whole lot of insight that would
be of interest to the casual viewer.

The Video, Audio and Interface

The interface is interesting and well done. The main menu and Bonus Features
menu are themed to the laptop and handheld computers that Diesel’s character
uses in the movie, while the other menus are themed to look like a child’s
room or doodles on a sidewalk.

The audio is very good. All of the dialogue is clear and understandable
,and the music and special effects come through well in the Dolby surround
sound presentation.

The Final Evaluation

This movie makes a good rental for family viewing. If you have younger
children, you might want to skip over the introductory section, which
contains some action violence as an introduction to Vin Diesel’s SEAL
character. Neither the movie itself, nor the extras on the DVD warrant
a purchase at the $29.99 price, unless you happen to be a diehard Vin
Diesel fan; if so, you will enjoy replaying his shower scene over and
over.
