Feature: The Walt Disney Family Museum
On today’s show, Steven Ng interviews Donna Tuggle, Director of Education and Public Programming at the Walt Diseny Family Museum.
The Museum tells story of Walt Disney’s life & work in his own words and in the words of others.
There are many interactive exhibits, including a hands-on demonstration of how to synchronize sound for Steamboat Willie that starts with a description by Walt of how it’s done.
Guests will see the development of the studio’s early, World War II-era and postwar films, through the development of Disneyland, the World’s Fair pavilions, etc.
The main lobby includes a display of a fraction of the 900 awards Walt received during his lifetime, highlighting the unique Oscar that Walt received for technical achievement related to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
The Museum tells the story of the family man, the storyteller, and the inventor. It’s a way to remind people that Walt Disney was a real man, not just a corporate icon.
They are hoping that kids will come away from the museum inspired with possibilities. many early visitors say that they want to draw or become animator, will learn of technological improvements that Walt made and how they impacted the history of animation and film.
All collections are owned by the Walt Disney Family Foundation. Diane Disney Miller and her family were instrumental in gathering it all. The furniture from Walt’s apartment over the Disneyland firehouse came from Diane. Other significant pieces such as the multiplane camera on loan from Walt Disney Company.
The museum is now open to the public, every day except Tuesdays and holidays, from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Tickets have timed entry slots; guests can only enter at their specific time, but can stay as long as they want.
The museum will host classes on animation, film, and drawing and among the public programs and educational classes.
Potential visitors can get more info at the museum’s Web site.

Twitter/Facebook poll questions
Here are the responses to some questions that Mark was asking on Twitter and Facebook in the last week. If you’d like to get in on answering these questions in the future, you can follow Mark on Twitter or friend him on Facebook.
What do you think of the new “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day” promotion? Do you plan to participate?
- I like that Disney is encouraging people to help their communities! Maybe when people get a taste of it, they will continue even witout getting something in return, like free admission.
- This is a perfect promotion for the economic times we are facing. It will encourage volunteerism and those awarded a free day will bring their friends and family along to the park which will give Disney attendance a boost too. It is a win / win!
- I already do volunteer work so it’s nice that I may be rewarded to do something I already enjoy!
- I like the idea. Now, here is to hoping that there will be something somewhat nearby so I can actually participate. Like what Anthony said
- I already do volunteer work and this would be a nice little perk.
- I like the idea that Disney is promotiing volunteerism. I also like the fact that an annual passholder can get something else or donate their ticket to a non-profit organization.
- Awesome idea. I just signed up to get e-mail notice. Thanks for posting this, Mark.
- signed up for the reminder and hope to participate and get the whole family invloved…it’s good Disney is getting it’s fans involved in the community and if they have to promise a free day of admission then so be it
- I think its a great idea to volunteer but your reward should be knowing you’ve helped someone in the community that needs the help.
- I think this will help plant the seed to volunteer and in turn families will continue to volunteer in future.
- Interesting idea
- I hope it’ll encourage more people to get involved in volunteer organizations. I wish they were offering other options to APs
- I think that quite a few of them may give it a pass with the options offered.
- Good idea, but a lot of people that are already volunteering in other non-HandsOn Network organizations will not benefit from this offer.
- I love it! I’d planned to get my kids involved with @GKTWVillage soon anyway, but now we’ll look into even more opportunities!
- nice idea, hope it increases volunteerism. Bet it does in the LA/Orlando areas. We won’t participate becuse we have AP’s anyway.
- I have been doing Disney Volunteering through Sports Enthuisiasts for a few years & gtting free tickets! Glad it is mainstreaming!!
- Like it but liked free admission on your birthday better. I will participate.
- Eh. Whatever happened to just Disneyland sans-promotion? Must every year have a tie-in or promo now? I miss plain old Disneyland.
- I live in uk and dont own property in usa so cant participate!
- I’ll be glad to volunteer, but I have an annual pass so I don’t need the ticket.
- I think it is a neat way to bring focus volunteering, will need to look into opportunities before deciding if we will do it.
- odd and no
- I will sign up to get the volunteering opportunities. If there’s 1 that piques my interest & is nearby I’ll definitely participate
- Great idea!
- I tweeted all morning about my thoughts on the new Sisney promotion. (in short, “ehhhhhh”).
- I”m thinking I might need to blog about my feelings on the new promotion. Too much to say
- I’m slightly underwhelmed so far, its great outreach, but an interesting choice indeed for Disney.
Mark thinks that the idea of encouraging people to volunteer is great, but the actual value of what you get in exchange (the one-day, one-park pass) is much less than you’d think.
Again, if you’d like to get in on answering these questions in the future, you can follow Mark on Twitter or friend him on Facebook.
