Are you ready for the 2007 marathon?
We may still be three months away from the 2006 Marathon, but Disney
has announced the dates for the 2007 Walt Disney World Marathon and Half-Marathon.
The Half-Marathon will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2007, while the
Marathon will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2007. Registration opens on
Monday, January 9, 2006, the day after this year’s marathon. For more
information about the event, read our WDW
Marathon Guide.
Pay for your name
Last month, we first reported rumors that it would cost an additional
$2 to have your name embroidered on your Mickey ears starting this month.
We then reported clarified information that it already cost $2 to have
it embroidered everywhere except the Magic Kingdom, because the park was
the only place on property where you could still get the ears embroidered
by hand, rather than by machine. Further, we reported that park management
was refusing the new computerized system because it was not traditional
and didn’t fit in with the atmosphere at the Magic Kingdom, so it looked
like embroidery would remain hand-written, and hence free, at the park.
Well, we have some good news and some bad news. The Magic Kingdom is
still embroidering names by hand, with new cast members continuing to
be trained to use the embroidery machines. However, it appears that our
original story was correct in relation to the park. Upper management has
decided that, despite the fact that the computerized machines will not
be used, they’re going to start charging anyway. Starting this coming
Sunday, it will cost you $2 to get your ears embroidered with your name
in the Magic Kingdom.
Disney pastry chefs go to town on holiday creations
Every year, Disney’s pastry chefs create tremendous masterpieces for
the holidays at many of the resort hotels. Here’s a summary of what you
can expect to see this year:
The Beach Club will again feature a life-size carousel of gingerbread,
chocolate and sugar paste in the lobby. Small gingerbread houses and collectible
pins depicting the gingerbread carousel will be sold in the merchandise
stores, and chefs will present demonstrations throughout the day, giving
guests tips on decorating their own gingerbread creations.
The BoardWalk will present a holiday toy corner, featuring toys made
of edible ingredients and a Christmas tree decorated with cookie ornaments.
The Contemporary Resort’s fourth floor will host a holiday toy shop made
of sugar and chocolate, featuring Pinocchio.
The Grand Floridian will again host its famed life-sized holiday gingerbread
house, which will double as a store selling Santa lollipops, gingerbread
cookie people, gingerbread ornaments, gingerbread cookies, stollen bread,
and Grand Floridian chocolate logo boxes filled with truffles, peppermint
bark and miniature gingerbread houses.
The Yacht Club will showcase a miniature train layout surrounding a sugary
mountain and village. Small gingerbread houses and collectible pins will
be sold in the merchandise stores.
The parks will not be neglected, either. Over in Epcot, the Liberty Inn
at the American Adventure pavilion will host Santa’s Bakeshop, featuring
a life-size Santa’s Gingerbread House. The house will sell Christmas cookies
and hot and cold beverages. Meanwhile, the Hollywood Brown Derby restaurant
at the Disney-MGM Studios will host a four-foot version of the Twilight
Zone Tower of Terror made of gingerbread, icing, and sugar.
More information on holiday happenings
In addition to the special events at Epcot which we detailed back on
August 8 (link)—with
an updated schedule of Candlelight Processional narrators on September
19 (link)—and
the pastry delights listed above, there is so much more going on at the
Walt Disney World Resort for the holidays this year. Here are some of
the highlights:
The Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights at Disney-MGM Studios will run
from November 14 – January 8, 2006. It is rumored, but not confirmed,
that the prismatic glasses will return this year. The “Hollywood Holly-Day”
parade also returns to the Studios this year.
The 14 nights of this year’s Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party events
will feature the new “Holiday Wishes – Celebrate the Spirit of the
Season” holiday-themed fireworks display. The show is set to classic holiday
music and “paints a winter wonderland in the sky.”
“Mickey’s Jingle Jungle Parade” will help to celebrate the season at
Disney’s Animal Kingdom from November 14 – January 8, 2006. Santa
Goofy and other Disney characters will also transform Camp Minnie-Mickey
into a wild and festive wonderland.
Santa (or one of his assistants) will be available for photo opportunities
in front of World of Disney at Santa’s Chalet from 5–10 p.m. daily,
November 19–24, and from noon to 10 p.m. daily, November 25–December
24. Pet cats and dogs are welcome to join in the photos from December
3–18.
Festival of the Masters event details
We’ve got a tentative rundown of the special events surrounding the 30th
annual Festival of the Masters art show to be held at Downtown Disney
November 11–13. In addition to the 200 artists, special performance
artists and kids’ activities, House of Blues will be presenting its seventh
annual Folk Art Festival. Live music will be presented at Bongos, House
of Blues and Virgin Megastore. Cirque du Soleil will present face painting
and balloons, while DisneyQuest will host an Animation Academy experience.
Pleasure Island will get into the act as well, with a Beverage Zone featuring
a Cool Jazz Lounge with live entertainment at the West End Stage and an
Island Zone with live entertainment at the Hub Stage. There will be live
Irish entertainment outside the new Raglan Road Irish Pub (which opens
next week), and the Harley-Davidson shop will present a live demonstration
of art on motorcycles, whatever that is.
The event will run from 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. each day.
Haunted Wagon Rides begin at Fort Wilderness
Fort Wilderness is running a seasonal Haunted Wagon Ride based on The
Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The wagon ride leaves from Pioneer Hall six
times per night with an on-board storyteller to relate the story of Ichabod
Crane, the Headless Horseman and the rest of the cast of characters from
the Washington Irving story. Tickets cost $15 per adult, $10 per child
(3-9), and may only be purchased at the Fort Wilderness kennel from 9
a.m.-5 p.m. on the day of the wagon ride. The wagon rides will take place
on October 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 24, 26, 28, 29, 30 and 31.
Overexposure aboard Wonder
A crewmember aboard the Disney Wonder reportedly exposed himself
to a girl under the age of 18 while the ship was docked in the Bahamas
last week. Since the alleged incident took place in a foreign country,
an investigation is taking place there, with the assistance of U.S. law
enforcement agencies. The crewmember was separated from passengers for
the remaining portion of that cruise, and has since been suspended pending
the investigation.
New special event lunch to debut next month
Joining the Lunch with a Disney Artist and Lunch (or Dinner) with an
Imagineer programs is the new “Lunch with Walt Disney World Animal Programs.”
Unlike the other programs, which take place that the Hollywood Brown Derby
restaurant at the Disney-MGM Studios, the new meal takes place at Jiko
at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.
Beginning November 1, every Tuesday from noon until 2 p.m., guests will
be able to break bread (or lavosh) with an expert such as the Animal Kingdom
Lodge’s Animal Curator, Joe Kalla, or perhaps a dolphin trainer or veterinarian.
Over a South African feast, the specialists will share stories and their
backgrounds in Jiko’s wine room.
The cost is $65 per person with an optional $15 wine pairing option.
For more information or reservations, call the Walt Disney World Dine
Line at 407-WDW-DINE (407-939-3463).
Walt Disney World looks to assist hurricane victims by filling staffing
shortages
Last Thursday, representatives from Walt Disney World headed to Houston
to participate in “Destination Occupation,” a regional job fair for hurricane
victims. One of more than 500 employers from across the Southeastern U.S.
to attend, Disney was looking for for hourly and full-time staffers from
among the over 5,000 applicants, and made employment offers on-site. Disney
was also the title child-care area sponsor for the event.
For some hourly positions with severe current shortages, such as dishwashers,
food service workers and character performers, Disney offered a $1,500
relocation benefit.
Disney representatives explained to applicants that, while the local
housing market is tight and not cheap, the Red Cross and other Central
Florida agencies have programs to help with the cost of housing for the
hurricane victims.
Haunted Mansion comic book anthology debuts this month
Later this month, SLG Publishing and Disney Publishing Worldwide will
introduce the first issue of a comic book anthology based on Disney’s
classic Haunted Mansion attraction (not the movie!). The comics will tell
the stories of the various ghost tenants of the attraction. SLG Publishing
president and series editor Dan Vado noted, “There are 999 ghosts living
in the mansion, that means there is potential for 999 different stories.”
A series of stories that will run through the first several issues will
present a new back story for the Mansion and tell the stories of The Ghost
Host, Madame Leota, and the Bride, including how they all came to be in
the mansion. The mansion’s powerful attraction to spirits and ghouls will
also be revealed.
The Haunted Mansion will be a 32-page black & white comic book and will
carry a cover price of $2.95. It will be available at select comic book
stores and book stores this October, and will also be available at Hot
Topic stores and via Amazon.com and the publisher’s web site (link).
Avast ye, thar be guesswork ahead!
Properly warned ye be, says I.
This is purely speculation on my part based on several small but telling
indicators, but look for the Disney-MGM Studios to be officially renamed
to the Walt Disney Studios Florida on December 1.
Ears to the ground
…Parking prices have just gone up again. As of yesterday, it costs
$9 to park at a Disney theme park. Campers and trailers cost $10 and RVs
cost $12.
…The test family suites at the All-Star Music resort are perhaps
the start of something even bigger. (By the way, you can’t request a reservation
for those suites. Disney may offer them to you if your reservation shows
that the suite might be appropriate for your party.) We’re hearing that,
if the test is successful, the second phase of the Pop Century Resort
(the Legendary Years – 1900s–1940s) will be built entirely as
family suites.
…Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress has returned to “seasonal”
status on the Walt Disney World Web site, joining The Timekeeper in that
status. Since the latter attraction has not been open in a very long time
(not even for the peak July 4 weekend), this adds to concerns about the
recent rumors that there is a team of Imagineers actively working on a
replacement for the aging Carousel.
…Next Tuesday from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. at Epcot’s World Showplace
pavilion, there will be a live taping of the Food Network Challenge
television show, featuring six teams of three pastry students from top
culinary schools across the country competing to create desserts in three
categories. For information about attending the show, call 407-566-6248.
…Have you ever accidentally left something behind at the airport?
Orlando International Airport has now instituted an online Lost & Found
service (link).
You can submit a lost-item report via the web, and if they’ve got your
item, they’ll contact you to arrange for its return.
…We are now hearing a rumor that, after the Tarzan Rocks
show closes in March, the Theater in the Wild will be completely demolished.
For what, nobody’s leaking yet.
…Following the completion of the temporary buffet’s test period,
El Pirata y El Perico Restaurante in the Magic Kingdom has closed once
again.
…Despite the relative paucity of things to play on, it appears that
the Pooh’s Playful Spot playground is being somewhat well-received. This
begs the question, does this mean that Epcot will soon get a new children’s
playground?
…Installation of the Osborne Lights at the Studios is nearing completion.
…A word of warning to those looking to buy park passes on eBay.
If the seller posts a photo so that you can see the ticket number before
you bid, Disney can also see the number. Expect Disney to cancel the ticket
before the auction is even over.
…Disney is testing a concierge desk at Old Port Royale at the Caribbean
Beach Resort in addition to the one at the resort’s Customs House building
due to the remote location of the “lobby” building. If the test is successful,
look for additional concierge locations at Fort Wilderness due to the
similar situation at that resort.
…We’re hearing reports that tower rooms with a Magic Kingdom view
in the Contemporary Resort may carry an increased charge next year, similar
to “preferred view” rooms at other resorts.
…There’s been a character switch at the ‘Ohana breakfast. While
Mickey remains, the rest of the cast of characters will be swapping out.
Chip, Dale and Goofy are vacating to make way for Lilo, Stitch and Pluto.
…In an odd bit of cross-promotion, the Pop Century Resort (home
of the giant Rubik’s Cube icons) will host the World Rubik’s Cube Game
Championship November 4-6 (link).
The events will include 3x3x3, 4x4x4 and 5x5x5 speed cubing, as well as
stranger events such as blindfolded cubing, one-handed cubing and foot
cubing.
…If you use the Central Florida Greeneway (SR-417) to get to Walt
Disney World from the airport, expect traffic shifts and lane closures
at the Boggy Creek Road and John Young Parkway toll plazas over the next
year. The plazas are being expanded to accommodate express lanes. When
the project is finished next September, there will be four express lanes
and eight cash lanes at John Young Parkway and four express lanes and
10 cash lanes at Boggy Creek Road.
…Gelato is now available at the Beach Club Marketplace at Disney’s
Beach Club Resort.
…The Walt Disney World Florist is presenting a new weekly Floral
Experience at the Saratoga Springs Resort’s Community Hall on a test basis.
Each Wednesday afternoon through November 9, from 5:30-6:30 p.m., you
can learn how Disney’s creates floral centerpieces. Each class will feature
surprise “takeaways.” Cost is $42.50 per person for Disney Vacation Club
members, $50 for all others. You can register by calling the Walt Disney
World Florist at 407-827-3505.
