“Year of a Million Dreams” really “15 Months of 1.25 Million

Dreams and Dreamlets”

Last week, Disney finally announced the rules and list of prizes for the

“Year of a Million Dreams” promotion (link),

and there will actually be 1, 250,001 prizes given away over the 15 months

of the event. While, as we would expect, almost all prizes have a very small

actual value (1,248,754 of the prizes have a value of $25 or less), there

are also 60 prizes with a value of $5,000 or more.

The 367 nights in the “Mickey Mouse Penthouse” at the Disneyland

Resort and the 307 nights in the new Cinderella Castle Suite inside Walt Disney

World’s Magic Kingdom are valued at $572 and $587, respectively. The top-value

prizes are three fully-paid 220-point memberships in the Disney Vacation Club

at the Saratoga Springs Resort, including ownership purchase, taxes and maintenance

fees and exchange fees, plus $25,110 to defray the income taxes on the prize,

valued at an estimated total of $83,701 per prize.

Three Grand Marshal World Tour prizes, 15-day, 14-night round-the-world trips

for four to visit all 11 Disney theme parks and serve as grand marshals in

all five Magic Kingdom-style parks, including airfare, local transportation,

park admission and $75 per person per day toward meals, plus $10,470 toward

taxes, are valued at $45,370 apiece.

Other big prizes include six Adventures By Disney trips to various locations

with values from $15,500 to $25,600, eighteen Disney cruises with values from

$9,880 to $16,900 and fifteen trips each to Walt Disney World and Disneyland,

valued at $5,200 each. Each of the big prizes includes cash toward income

taxes.

MousePad discussion forum member Darkbeer, a frequent photographic contributor

to the Disneyland Park Update, has put together a great summary of all of

the prizes and the chances to win (about one in 60, based on historic attendance

at the parks) over a series of posts on our discussion forums (link).

The entire process is being overseen by Creata (USA) Inc., an outside company

specializing in adminstering large sweepstakes.

Transition at first Not So Scary party goes smoothly

Last week, we reported that cast members were expecting the worst for the

transition from day guests to holders of hard tickets for Mickey’s

Not So Scary Halloween Party due to the party’s starting time matching

the park’ closing time of 7 p.m. We’re happy to report that the crowd control

at the first party last Friday night went very smoothly.

By 5:45 p.m., Main Street Operations cast members were out directing day

guests to exit through the right (west) tunnel while Party guests were arriving

through the east tunnel. Later on, as closing time approached, Main

Street was set up for two-way traffic, with incoming and departing guests

both staying to their right.

Day guests were allowed to purchase merchandise in the shops on their way

out until 7:30 p.m., though cast members stood at every doorway to the shops

starting at 7:15 to prevent further entry of day guests. (Party guests could

still enter.)

Each land was “swept” of those without wristbands starting at 7:00, and the

sweep reached Main Street by around 7:35. As the sweep went down Main Street

toward the train station, the cast members in the doorways would join the

street. By 7:45, the park was “clear.”

As the first parade was scheduled for 8:15 p.m., that did not leave much

time to get the guide ropes and other crowd control measures in place, but

they managed to finish in time.

As it turned out, the start of the parade was delayed due to thunder and

lightning, but it did indeed go off. There were some issues related to the

rain that did come down during the party, and there was about a 3-4 minute

hold along the parade route, but it did finish the route. The Happy HalloWishes

fireworks and the second showing of Mickey’s Boo-To-You Parade went off without

a hitch.

We’ll repeat from last week: If you’re planning to attend the party, make

sure that your wristband is visible and that you retain your park ticket.

That will make it easier for you and quicker for the cast members doing the

sweep of the park.

Not So Scary party details, corrections

We’ve also got a few corrections and clarifications to our party guide that

we published last week:

The new times for Mickey’s Boo-To-You Parade are 8:15 and 10:30 p.m., and

Happy HalloWishes now runs at 9:30 p.m. These times were likely pushed back

due to the time required to sweep the park of day guests. Captain Jack Sparrow

does appear on the Pirates float in the parade. Candy scents waft from the

Goofy’s Candy Company float features cast members walking alongside, handing

out candy to parade spectators.

The dance parties are known as Stitch’s Cosmic Dance Party (at Cosmic

Ray’s Starlight Cafe) and Get Up and Boo-gie Dance Party (at Ariel’s

Grotto).

The Villain’s Mix and Mingle takes place after a short stage show in front

of Cinderella Castle, which occurs at 7:45,

9:00, 10:15 and 11:15 p.m.

The Liberty Belle Riverboat was not operating

on Friday night, but that’s no guarantee of whether or not they’ll be using

it at later parties, as it only returned to service from an extremely lengthy

refurbishment a week earlier.

There don’t appear to be free photos this year, but Photopass photos are

reportedly 50 percent off.

Finally, there have been some questions as to what kind of candy was given

out at the trick-or-treat stations. Thanks to MousePad message board member

cheshirecatgirl, we have the following lengthy list of what there was: Nestle

Crunch, Butterfinger, Baby Ruth, 100 Grand, Raisinettes, Almond Joy, Reeses

Peanut Butter Cups, Hershey’s Miniatures, Snickers, York Peppermint Patties,

Hersheys Kisses, Milky Way, 3 Musketeers, Twix, generic Halloween chocolates,

Skittles, Smarties, Spree, Necco wafers, DumDums, Starbursts, Bottlecaps,

Mike and Ikes, Laffy Taffy, Tootsie Rolls, Sugar Daddies, Raisins, Sunkist

Fruit Chews, Twizzlers, Sour Patch Kids, Airheads, Hot Tamales, Nerds, Bit

o’Honey, and mini-gummy hotdogs and hamburgers.

We’ve updated our park guide page for

the Halloween Party to correct inaccuracies.

Main Street Family Fun Day Parade details revealed

We’ve finally got a little more information on the Main Street Family Fun

Day Parade, which will go through rehearsals on September 21 and 23, and officially

debut on September 25. About 60 or so guests will join Pluto, Chip, Dale,

Daisy Duck, Horace Horsecollar, Clarabelle Cow and eight dancers (4 male,

4 female) in a parade from the Hub down Main Street to Town Square. The Main

Street Fire Truck will also be used in the parade. It will run three times

per day, at 12:25, 1:05 and 1:55 p.m.

New Radisson discount rates through December 21

The Radisson Resort Orlando – Celebration, a MousePlanet sponsor, has announced

reduced rates for MousePlanet readers that book their trip by September 30

for trips through the end of the year. Rates start at $59.95 per night through

October 5 and $79.95 from October 6 through December 21!

I’ll take three houses at Walt Disney World, please …

While Fenway Park and Times Square took over from Park Place and Boardwalk

in the new Here and Now edition of Monopoly, Walt Disney World managed an

appropriate place on the board, nonetheless. Selected after three million

votes this spring as the representative landmark for Orlando, “Disney World”

(we guess they lost the “Walt”) ended up taking the place of Illinois Avenue,

resulting in the world biggest tourist destination taking over the most landed-upon

property space on the board. And it can be yours for a mere $2.4 million in

Monopoly money.

House and hotel costs are $1.5 million each (hotels require pre-purchase

of four houses, as in the standard edition). Rents range from $200,000 with

undeveloped property to $11 million with a hotel. While less than the $20

million for landing on Times Square with a hotel, it’s certainly a step up

from the $2.5 million it costs for Jacobs Field (Cleveland) with a hotel.

The game goes on sale on Thurs., Sept. 14, 2006 at mass retail merchants

nationwide for a suggested retail price of $29.99. For more information, check

out the Monopoly web site (link).

Cast members, DVC members, AP holders to get Nemo ride preview next month

The Seas with Nemo & Friends is apparently on track for its late October

debut, as cast members, DVC members and Annual Passholders will be getting

sneak previews in the middle of the month. Cast member previews will be held

on October 12, while DVC members and AP holders can see it on October 13-15.

You must bring your annual pass or DVC membership card and a photo ID in order

to get in. Passholders and DVC members can bring up to three guests. As always,

dates and availability are subject to change.

Cruise Line offers on-board credit for online bookings

The Disney Cruise Line is offering a $25 onboard credit when you book online

from now through October 12. It is combinable with other offers, but is available

for new bookings only. You can get the discount whether you book it yourself

on disneycruise.com or you book through a travel agent (though the agent is

required to book on disneycruise.com for the offer. The offer is good on all

Disney Cruise Line itineraries and sail dates.

World Vacations for the information.

Universal offers new low-cost multi-day ticket

Universal Orlando is trying another angle to draw visitors away from Disney.

Trying to battle the highly-successful Magic Your Way passes that keep visitors

at Disney by reducing the cost per day as the length of the ticket increases,

Universal has introduced the “EarlyBird Exclusives” ticket that provides seven

days of admission to both Universal parks for only $85, or $18 more than a

one-day, one-park ticket.

Other “EarlyBird Exclusives” tickets allow Florida residents to get a one-day,

two-park or two-day, one-park ticket for $67, the price of a one-day, one-park

ticket. Still another deal provides four-day passes packaged with a three-night

hotel stay for $195.

The tickets must be purchased at least one day in advance, either via the

Internet or through AAA or other participating ticketing agents.

SeaWorld Orlando already has a seven-day pass called “Anytime”.

Union tries again to organize Universal workers

For the seventh time, labor organizers are trying to unionize the workers

at Universal Orlando. Unlike previous efforts where specialized unions focused

on groups of employees in specific job groupings, this attempt is to get all

13,000 employees to join a single union.

The International Union of Journeymen & Allied Trades set up the Universal

Labor Council to attempt to organize the workers. They say that, if a union

is committed to by employees, the Universal Employees Union Local 1 would

be chartered. However, since Florida is a right-to-work state, employees could

not be forced to join the union even if it were agreed to.

There’s no word yet on how successful the 40 or so organizers have been.

SeaWorld Orlando employees are not unionized, but Disney employees have

had union representation since the resort first opened.

Cypress Gardens declares Chapter 11

After reopening with much fanfare two years ago, Cypress Gardens has lapsed

into bankruptcy. After the Central Florida landmark closed in 2003 due to

dropping attendance, it was rescued by Kent Buescher, who owns a similar park

in Valdosta, Georgia.

However, before the park could reopen, it was hit by Hurricanes Charley,

Frances and Jeanne, which destroyed a great deal of the work on the park.

According to Buescher, insurance claims for the hurricane damage have still

not been paid, resulting in a major cash crunch. He said that claims have

been denied for reasons ranging from issues with the policy to questions about

the cost of repairs.

In either case, the park will operate under Chapter 11 while it tries to

reorganize its finances. It may take some time to see if the park dodges the

bullet once again.

Quick takes …

…Cinderellabration was performed for

the last time on Saturday with many cast members in attendance, though most

were glad to see it go. A replacement show, first mentioned here at

the end of July, should debut in the near future.

…The Living with the Land boat ride

returns to operation today. The boats have been running empty or with water

dummies for at least a week now. We are not sure if the Fastpass machines

have been removed or not. We’ll let you know once we can confirm it one way

or the other.

…While the boat ride was closed, the greenhouses at The Land underwent

some changes due to an aphid infestation. The main culprit was the rice plants,

which will not be replanted, and were replaced with tropical star fruits,

spices, bananas and other tropical fruits. Many of the other plants had to

be replaced, as well.

…The Funai Classic golf tournament tees off this week as a field of

144 top PGA Tour players go after the $828,000 top prize of a total purse

of $4.6 million. The October 19-22 event is played on the Palm and Magnolia

courses on Thursday and Friday before settling down on the Magnolia course

for the final two rounds on Saturday and Sunday.

Trivia question of the week

This week’s question: How many tons of candy has Disney brought in

for all the of Halloween parties? Stay tuned to next week’s park update

for the answer.

The answer to last week’s question: “What are the only two dolls

in “it’s a small world” that represent

the United States of America?” is:

The cowboy and Indian on the right as you exit the “white room” finale.

The two dolls representing the United States of America only appear in the

“white room” and not earlier in the attraction. Photo by Mark Goldhaber.

Current Discounts & Promotions

Room discounts available for passholders, Florida residents and general

public through end of September

Disney has announced new room rate discounts for travel through September

30. New, lower room rates are available to the general public beginning August

19 as room-only reservations or as a Magic Your Way package with or without

dining.

Passholders and Florida residents get even lower rates, with value resorts

starting at just $59 per night. These rates start August 27.

To make reservations at the general public rates, use promotional code BPN

or BPO for room-only reservations, YYC for Magic Your Way packages and YYD

for Magic Your Way Plus Dining. Passholders should use promotional code FAU

or FAV, while Florida residents should reference code FAR.

Passholder, Florida resident room rates, general public package deals announced

for October through December

Annual passholder rates have been announced for October 1 through December

23. Of course, there will be no AP rates during peak Christmas Week dates

of December 24-31. The rates very by season (the period covered spans regular,

value and holiday seasons), but they’ll give you approximately $20 off per

night at Value resorts, $40 off per night at Moderates, and $71-$80 per night

at Deluxe resorts. The booking code for these rates is FBZ. (The passholder

Web site says FCB, so I would guess that both would work.)

Florida Residents have their own discounts, using booking code FBY. Availability

dates are October 5 through December 23, and rates are $5 more than the AP

rates.

Both of these rates can be booked up until December 23.

The general public has not been left out, either. Disney has announced a

special discount for packages purchased through September 30. For vacations

between October 1 and December 23 (with the possible exception of November

19-23 and December 2-8), a great low rate, with the example rate given as

$355 per adult for five nights at a value resort, based on double occupancy,

with lower per-person rates for juniors and children staying in the same room.

The Disney Dining Plan can also be added to these packages.

To book online at the Disney Web site, click “Special Offers” on the left

side of the Tickets and Reservations part of the site to see the offer.

To book via phone or through a travel agency, use code ZBG for Magic Your

Way packages and ZBH for Magic Your Way Plus Dining.

Disney Rewards Visa cardholders got access to the same discount three days

earlier, and can also book through September 30. It’s unknown whether they

get anything more than the general public, but the cardholders can book with

code ZBC for Magic Your Way packages and ZBD for Magic Your Way Plus Dining.

with 100% of net proceeds going directly to aid 2005 Hurricane Disaster

Relief, created by the stars of the ABC soap One Life to Live.

The free CD will be mailed with final travel documents. If the guest cancels

their Super Soap vacation reservation, the offer is null and void. Small

World Vacations’ minimum night stay policy applies. Small World Vacations

has donated to the One Life, Many Voices Hurricane Relief Fund on behalf

of their guests.

Cirque discounts for Passholders and DVC members

Passholders and DVC members get 25 percent off Category 2 admission to performances

of Cirque du Soleil’s La Nouba through September 30, 2006. Each passholder

or DVC member can buy up to four tickets. Tickets should be purchased by phone

at 407-939-7604 up to 30 days in advance, and must be picked up at the box

office with valid Passholder or DVC identification. The show will not be performed

on Sundays and Mondays, as well as September 17?25.

Golf Price Slice returns

A round of golf at Walt Disney World

will be less expensive after 10 a.m. again this summer as the resort is bringing

back the Disney’s Price Slice promotion. From May 22 through September 30,

greens fees will be “sliced” to $55 for the Magnolia and Eagle Pines courses,

$49 for the Palm course and $45 for the Lake Buena Vista course. The rates

include the use of an electric cart and are discounted from the before-10

a.m. prices of $89 (Magnolia and Eagle Pines), $79 (Palm) and $69 (Lake Buena

Vista). The Osprey Ridge course is not involved in the promotion, as it will

be closed from May 15 through September 23 for refurbishment. The Tifdwarf

grass on the greens is being replaced by TifEagle turf, tee boxes are being

laser leveled and other work will also be done. The annual makeover of a selected

course has been extremely well-received, with the Palm course going first

in 2004 and the Magnolia getting upgraded last year. It is unknown at this

time whether the Eagle Pines or Lake Buena Vista course is scheduled for next

year. To reserve a tee time, call 407-WDW-GOLF (407-939-4653) or go to the

Disney Golf Web site (link).

Magic Your Way ticket price guide

Walt Disney World’s entire ticket price structure changed as of January 2,

2005, to the new “Magic Your Way” passes, and prices increased on

January 1, 2006, and again on August 6, 2006. Advance purchase discounts are

only available on tickets above the base ticket of at least 4 days, with higher

discounts on those tickets with both options. Prices do not include 6.5% Florida

sales tax.
