News and Views
Sea World, Busch Gardens finally join in price hikes
On Friday, SeaWorld Orlando and Busch Gardens in Tampa finally joined Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando in raising ticket prices. The latter two resorts had raised prices back in August.
SeaWorld’s prices went up $3 for adults (from $61.95 to $64.95) and $4 for children (from $49.95 to $53.95). Busch Gardens’ prices are up $4 for both adults and children, with adult prices going up to $61.95 and child prices up to $51.95. The parks still trail Disney and Universal, whose ticket prices are both $67 for a one-day, one-park pass.
Busch Entertainment, which owns both parks, has said that it will continue its Fun Card program. Florida residents can purchase the card for the price of a one-day ticket, which will allow them to visit both SeaWorld and Busch Gardens an unlimited number of times per year.

Hurricane season ends well short of forecast
The 2006 hurricane season ended on November 30, with a total of nine named storms, five of which became hurricanes, including two major hurricanes. The original prediction for the season was 13 to 16 named tropical storms, eight to 10 hurricanes and four to six major hurricanes. In August, the forecast was revised to 12 to 15 named storms, seven to nine hurricanes and three to four major hurricanes. Everything from global warming to El Nino have been cited as the reason for the milder-than-expected season.
Only three storms made landfall in the United States, all of which hit as tropical storms. It was the first time since 2001 that no hurricanes have hit the continental United States.

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in
OK, we said last week that it would be the last story on the Country Bears Christmas Special for this year. However, it seems that each time that we run a story on the Bears, more information comes in, and this time was no exception.
Last week, we noted that it was possible that the holiday makeover was cancelled so that Disney would have time to do much-needed maintenance and upgrades. Our latest information indicates that it may have been the other way around. By saving the money that would have been used for the conversion to the Christmas Bears, they were able to spend it on the attraction.
The reason that the Christmas Bears were cancelled is that the changeover time had the attraction down for 10 days each year, and the changeover has not been bringing in any larger crowds than the standard version. If there’s no drop-off in attendance for the holiday season, then it is likely that Disney will continue to keep the show in its standard version because nobody is apparently upset enough to miss the bears entirely just because they’re not doing the Christmas show.

MouseFest is here!The MouseFest sea portion is now underway, having set sail yesterday. It continues on land Thursday, after the cruisers make their way over to Walt Disney World, and runs through next Monday. Discovery may make special appearance for MouseFesters
The space shuttle Discovery could make a special meet even more exciting for MouseFesters this week. The shuttle is currently scheduled to launch at 9:35 p.m. on Thursday night, which would be in the middle of the Holiday Wishes fireworks show during Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. That fireworks show is the focus of one of the largest meets at MouseFest. In fact, a delay of just a few minutes would allow the launch to be part of the finale of the show.

Whoops!
Last week, we goofed. Quite a bit. In the Quick Takes section, we stated that Victoria & Albert’s at the Grand Floridian Resort was one of only two restaurants in Central Florida to receive a four-diamond ranking in the 2007 Mobil Travel Guide, and that only two hotels received a four-diamond rating. Well, we badly misread our information source.
In fact, there are actually 13 four-diamond-or-better restaurants in the Greater Orlando area, including Jiko: The Cooking Place at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and Todd English’s bluezoo at the Walt Disney World Dolphin. Victoria & Albert’s is the only five-diamond restaurant on that list.
There are also 20 four-diamond hotels in the Greater Orlando area, including Disney’s Beach Club, Yacht Club and Grand Floridian Resorts and the Walt Disney World Dolphin. There are no five-diamond hotels on that list.

…Last week, we asked you to send in your experiences with Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party in terms of seeing people without wristbands in the park and being allowed on attractions without having their wrists checked. …Reportedly, the world record-setting tomato tree at The Land pavilion in Epcot has now been certified as the most prolific by the Guinness Book of World Records. The tree produced 1,151.84 pounds of tomatoes in one year. Another tomato tree is now in pursuit of that record in the pavilion’s greenhouse.
…Reports are indicating that Disney is in negotiations with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays Major League Baseball team. If the talks are successful, the D-Rays could play a regular season series at The Ballpark at the Wide World of Sports Complex.
…Proving that all of those small donations add up, the Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund brought in a combined $100,000 worth of donations at the Zawadi Marketplace at the Animal Kingdom Lodge alone.

There are three islands in the 40-acre lagoon. They have actually been moved in the past to allow better viewing of low-level effects during the various incarnations of Illuminations.
Refurbishments and Attraction Closures
Magic Kingdom
- Timekeeper – is closed for good. The Monsters, Inc.-themed The Laugh Floor Comedy Club will have its official grand opening during a press event January 24–26.
- Splash Mountain – closes for refurbishment January 2–27.
- The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh – closes for refurbishment January 28 – February 11.
Epcot
- The Seas with Nemo and Friends – is now open, and has its official grand opening during a press event January 24–26.
- The Wonders of Life pavilion – has amazingly returned and will be open through January 1.
- El Rio del Tiempo – closes for refurbishment January 2 – April 1, 2007.
- Mitsukoshi Teppanyaki – closes for refurbishment January 15 – May 25, 2007.
Disney-MGM Studios
- Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster – closes for refurbishment January 2–21, 2007.
Animal Kingdom
- Finding Nemo – The Musical – is now open, and has its official grand opening during a press event January 24–26.
Resorts
- All-Star Movies Resort – the Fantasia pool is closed for an extensive rehab through February 18. All-Star Movies guests can use the “quiet” pools as well as the main pools at the other All-Star resorts.
- All-Star Music Resort – Conversion of Calypso buildings to Family Suites continues. All work had been expected to be completed by October 13, but that date has not been met. All buildings not containing Family Suites will be renovated between January and June, 2007.
- All-Star Sports Resort – All buildings will be renovated between June and November, 2007.
- Grand Floridian Resort & Spa – Building 6 (Concierge) closes in September 2007 for a full refurbishment.
- Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa – Phase I’s four buildings and Phase II’s eight units are complete, Construction on the six buildings of Phase III is underway, with all six units expected to be completed in mid-2007. The new buildings will comprise two additional sections, to be called The Carousel and The Grandstand. The two buildings in The Carousel have been completed, and the four in The Grandstand are well underway.
- Wilderness Lodge – We’ve gotten further information that all of the scaffolding is not yet down, though there is much less than there had been. The previous information from staff at the front desk was inaccurate.
Water Parks
- Blizzard Beach – Closed for annual refurbishment October 29, and will reopen on January 7, 2007.
- Typhoon Lagoon – Closes for annual refurbishment on January 7, 2007, and reopens on March 18, 2007.
Elsewhere
- Cirque du Soleil – La Nouba – performs Tuesdays – Saturdays. There will be two performances on New Year’s Eve, a Sunday night.

Magic Your Way package discounts through March 8, FL resident and AP room rates through February 14
Disney has announced discounts on Magic Your Way packages for January through early March and room-only discounts for Annual Passholders and Florida Residents for January through mid-February.
The Magic Your Way deals include free Park Hopper and Water Park Fun & More options added to your tickets and are valid from January 1 through March 8, with possible blackout dates for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday weekend. You must book this rate by December 16. No other discounts apply. To book the package, call Disney directly or your travel agent (Small World Vacations is MousePlanet’s preferred travel agency) and request booking code ZCK (standard Magic Your Way package) or ZCL (Magic Your Way Plus Dining).
Room-only discounts are available for Annual Passholders and Florida residents from January 1 through February 14. Discounts are $23 off per night at Value resorts, $46 per night at Moderate resorts and $80 per night at Deluxe and Disney Vacation Club resorts. Passholder, Florida resident room rates for October through December
Annual passholder rates have been announced for October 1 through December 23. Of course, there will be no AP rates during peak Christmas Week dates of December 24-31. The rates very by season (the period covered spans regular, value and holiday seasons), but they’ll give you approximately $20 off per night at Value resorts, $40 off per night at Moderates, and $71-$80 per night at Deluxe resorts. The booking code for these rates is FBZ. (The passholder Web site says FCB, so I would guess that both would work.)
Florida Residents have their own discounts, using booking code FBY. Availability dates are October 5 through December 23, and rates are $5 more than the AP rates.
Both of these rates can be booked up until December 23.
New discount deal announced for Canadian visitors
Walt Disney World has announced a new discounted offer for residents of Canada. The deal, available most nights from January 1–11 and January 15 – February 14, offers free Park Hopper and Water Park Fun & More options with purchase of a package. Prices start at US$377 per adult, double occupancy, at Disney value resorts. No other discounts apply. Use booking code ZCV for this offer. Reservations prior to November 2 require a Canadian address, which seems to point to this offer being expanded to U.S. visitors after that date. Packages must be booked by December 16.
