Room-only discounts now available through mid-April

Discounts of 15 to 35 percent are available for room-only reservations for stays at Walt Disney World for most nights February 17 thrugh April 16, 2011. Time is of the essence in making your reservation, though, as rates vary depending not only upon your dates of travel and the resort category at which you are staying, but also the date that you make your reservation. Discounts are 5 percentage points lower if you book by the end of the year.

* Note: Animal Kingdom Lodge is 20 percent off if booked by the end of the year or 15 percent off if booked between January 1 and February 13, 2011. Polynesian Resort is 25 percent off if booked by the end of the year or 20 percent off if booked between January 1 and February 13, 2011.

Deals are also available for January 2 to February 16, 2011. Discount percentages appear to match those for the other dates.

You can book the deal from now through February 13, 2011, with the deeper discount available for reservations made by December 31, 2010. Note that the rooms may go fast. The number of rooms available at these rates is limited. Minimum length of stay requirements may apply for Friday or Saturday arrivals.

NTSB releases documents related to 2009 monorail accident

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has released 61 documents, totalling almost 950 pages, related to the July 4, 2009 monorail accident that claimed the life of monorail pilot Austin Wuennenberg. It may take a while to get through all of these documents, but we’ll see if there’s anything of interest that has not been made public yet. If you’d like to review the documents yourself, you can find them at the NTSB Web site (link). Please let us know if you find anything that we haven’t reported yet.

“Next Generation” Pooh queue opens

The “Next Generation” queue for The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh is now open in the Magic Kingdom’s Fantasyland. While additional features will continue to open during December, you can now visit Tigger’s Bouncy Place, Rabbit’s Garden, Eeyore’s Gloomy Place and Pooh’s Hunny Hives. The Disney Parks Blog has provided a video overview of the changes:

You can “draw” in the hunny on Pooh’s walls, bounce at Tigger’s spot, trigger effects by stepping on pads at Rabbit’s garden and crawl through Eeyore’s place. If you’re in the Magic Kingdom in the next couple of weeks, let us know what you think of it.

Dream gets one step closer to delivery

The Disney Dream has returned to the North Sea for a second round of sea trials as it nears the completion of its construction and testing. The ship completed a transit back down the Elbe River yesterday after spending last week in dry dock at Hamburg, Germany. Construction work on the interiors and finishing work around the ship continue.

The Disney Parks blog has provided a video of some of the construction underway, including nearly completed staterooms, the Deck 3 atrium, Animator’s Palate, Vibe teen club, Pink champagne bar and Senses spa. For more images of the interior work, check out the blog post (link).

Earlier this month, the Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship floated out of its construction dock in Papenburg, Germany, down the Ems river to Eemshaven, The Netherlands, and finally out to the North Sea for its first round of sea trials.

At the conclusion of this second round of sea trials, the Dream will next head to Bremerhaven, Germany for its official delivery from Meyer Werft to Disney Cruise Line on December 9. At that point, the ship will be loaded with supplies and its full crew will sail the ship to its home in Port Canaveral, Florida. The ship will arrive in early January, 2011. After some final preparations, the Dream will be christened on January 19 and will set sail on its maiden voyage on January 26. MousePlanet will have coverage of the ship’s christening.

There’s also a new Disney Cruise Line commercial called “Behind the Magic” that’s showing in some movie theaters in the U.S. and on television in some parts of Canada. You can check it out on the Disney Parks Blog (link).

New Year’s Eve party reservations available

If you’ll be at Walt Disney World at the end of this year, there may still be opening for some special experiences. As we’ve noted earlier, there will be a special dinner and dessert party at the Tomorrowland Terrace at 6:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Prices for that party (including tax and gratuity) are $166.13 for adults, $81.99 for children ages 3-9.

Of course, there will also be the usual fireworks dessert parties at that location showing twice on December 30 and for the midnight fireworks on New Year’s Eve, all with special pricing. The December 30 seatings are at 7:30 and 10:50 p.m. and the late seating on December 31 is at 10:30 p.m. All dessert parties will also feature a non-alcoholic beverage to toast the New Year. Pricing for the dessert-only parties (including tax and gratuity) is $42.59 for adults and $23.42 for children ages 3-9.

If you’ll be in Epcot on New Year’s Eve, you can take advantage of La Hacienda de San Angel’s tremendous windows overlooking World Showcase Lagoon to have a New Year’s Eve Dinner Celebration with the best indoor view of Illuminations in the park. The event features a six-course menu and live entertainment, and is available with or without alcohol pairings. Seating begins at 9 p.m. With alcohol pairings, the cost is $225 plus tax and gratuity, but is only $199 plus tax and gratuity for adults without the wine pairing, and only $49.94 for children ages 3-9. Social Media Moms Celebration opens Thursday afternoon

If you’re a social media maven, you probably want to look at attending the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration. The event takes place March 17-20, 2011 at Walt Disney World, headquartered at the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. The event features special events, conference sessions and private parties around Walt Disney World. Registration opens at 2 p.m. EST this Thursday, December 2. Demand is high and the conference is expected to sell out very quickly, so be ready to pounce Thursday afternoon.

The conference costs $375, which includes a hotel room at the Grand Floridian for the length of the conference, plus 7-day park hoppers for you and up to 3 family members during the conference, conference sessions and select meals for attendees. Park tickets are available no earlier than March 17 after the conference starts, and expire March 23. Additional fees apply for additional family members. Special rates apply for more than one conference attendee sharing a single hotel room. …According to cast members Paul Chadkin’s posts on Twitter, the official name of the new parade at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be “Pixar Pals Countdown to Fun!” The parade will feature Disney Pixar films The Incredibles, A Bug’s Life, Ratatouille, Monsters, Inc., Up, and Toy Story. The official start date for Pixar Pals Countdown to Fun! is January 16, 2011.

…The Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique has added a Tangled package that is currently scheduled to be available only through December 31, 2010. Of course, if it is successful, it’s quite likely to get extended, but there’s no official word on that yet. The new package includes a braided Rapunzel wig, plus makeup, a face gem, a princess bag, and a princess sash. Call 407-WDW-STYLE (497-737-7875) to set up your appointment.

…If you’re looking for a gift for that speed freak in your family, the Richard Petty Driving Experience (with a location at the Walt Disney World Speedway) is offering a couple of special deals. Between now and December 31, 2010, you can purchase a gift card for a 3-lap Ride Along Experience for just $59 (regular price is $109). If you prefer, with the purchase of any Driving Experience (from the $449, 8-lap Rookie Experience to the $1,249, 30-lap Experience of a Lifetime), you’ll get a gift card for a free 3-lap Ride Along Experience. …The Astro Orbiter refurbishment originally listed for December 5 through 9 no longer appears on the official Walt Disney World Web site calendar. Of course, the January refurbishments of Kali River Rapids, Studio Backlot Tour and Honey I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure don’t appear there either, and they’re still scheduled as far as we know.

…Led by Epcot Catering’s Chef de Cuisine, Leonard Thomson, Disney VoluntEARS prepared and served approximately 700 people at the Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida. Disney VoluntEARS prepare and serve nearly 750 meals at the Coalition each month.

…On November 17, Walt Disney Parks & Resorts’ Chief Safety Officer and Vice Presidend of Worldwide Safety & Accessibility Greg Hale was honored by the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) with the 2010 Outstanding Service Award. The award is presented to the member individual or company that fosters the spirit of goodwill, professionalism, and high levels of performance within the amusement parks and attractions industry on a local or international basis. Hale was cited for lending his expertise to the safety standards development, refinement, and education programs within the industry, and for chairing the IAAPA Safety and Maintenance Committee and leading the International Standards Harmonization Committee.

…Congratulations to Adventures by Disney, which has won a number of awards recently. Disney’s tour company won both World’s Leading Luxury Tour Operator and North America’s Leading Tour Operator for the second straight year at the World Travel Awards (link). It also won Gold for its 2010 brochure and Silver for its website at the Travel Weekly Magellan Awards (link).

…Cast members at the Magic Kingdom’s turnstiles, as well as those working at the newsstand, locker shop, and stroller rental location are all sporting new costumes. Turnstile hosts and hostesses have orange shirts with dark blue pants or skirts, while the retail/rental hosts and hostesses have light blue tops with deep red bottoms with an optional orange apron. Jackets and overcoats for colder weather are the same deep red as the retail/rental bottoms.

…The 2011 Disney’s Princess Half-Marathon is 65 percent full. You can register at the official event Web site (link).

…The 2011 Walt Disney World Marathon is 94 percent full, the Half Marathon is 98 percent full, Goofy’s Race-and-a-Half Challenge is 98 percent full, Buzz & Woody’s Best Friends 5K is completely full, and Mickey’s Marathon Kids’ Fest is 97 percent full. Alternate laundry facilities are located at The Springs and Congress Park.
• Coronado Springs Resort – Cabanas Leisure Pool closed for refurbishment January 3–28, 2011.
• Yacht & Beach Club Resorts – The main slide and kiddie slide at Stormalong Bay are closed from January 3 through mid-February, 2011. Guests that wish to use have a pool slide as part of their resort pool experience can use the Luna Park pool at the BoardWalk Resort.

Free dining through September 29, 2011

Free dining is back, with the same split-level implementation as has been the case recently. Those staying at value resorts will get the Quick Service Dining Plan for free, while those in moderate, deluxe and deluxe villa accommodations will get the standard Disney Dining Plan for free. Free dining is available on select dates from this October through next September:

2010

• November 27 to December 2
• December 10–21

2011

• January 1–5
• January 9–13
• January 21 to February 3
• February 11–17
• February 25 to March 3
• May 27 to June 2
• August 19 to September 29

You must book free dining by December 20. The rooms available at these rates is limited. Minimum length of stay requirements may apply for Friday or Saturday arrivals. Military ticket offer

From now through September 28, 2011, active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase 4-Day Military Promotional Tickets with either the Park Hopper or Water Parks Fun and More option for $138 per ticket, plus tax, or with both the Park Hopper and Water Parks Fun and More options for $165 per ticket, plus tax. No Base ticket is available with this offer.

The tickets expire and may not be used after October 1, 2011. The tickets may not be used at all Walt Disney World theme parks and other gated attractions on the following blockout dates: December 27-31, 2010 and April 17-23, 2011. Additionally, the tickets may not be used at the Magic Kingdom on July 4, 2011.

Eligible service members include active or retired members of the U.S. military including the U.S. Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reservists. Disney Military Promotional Tickets can be purchased at Shades of Green or at a participating military base (MWR/ITT) office. There is no tax charged for these tickets but they must be activated at a theme park ticket window. Tickets may also be purchased at Walt Disney World Park Ticket Offices and Guest Relations Offices where tax will be charged. No more than six tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or their spouse, but not both) for themselves, family members, and friends, and all tickets must be purchased at the same time. If the immediate family has more than five dependants, additional tickets may be purchased for the dependants, however, additional tickets for guests may not be purchased. Valid military identification is required. The tickets are non-transferable and may not be resold.

The tickets may be upgraded to Seasonal Passes or Florida Resident Weekday Select Passes (for Florida Residents), or Annual Passes, Premium Annual Passes, or Disney Premier Pass with credit toward the upgrade based on the actual price paid. The no-expiration option and other upgrades, such as additional days, are not available.

Kids sail free on certain 7-night cruises

Children ages 17 and under traveling with two full-fare Guests in the same stateroom sail free on most 7-Night Caribbean cruises from January 8, 2011 through March 5, 2011, excluding the February 19, 2011 sailing.

There are some restrictions and exclusions. The discount applies only to verandah staterooms (except concierge and suites), and it cannot be combined with any onboard credit discounts. Taxes and fees are also not included for the free children.

The number of cabins available at these rates is limited. Reservations may be booked through the Disney Cruise Line Web site (link), by calling Disney Cruise Line at 800-951-3532, or your travel agent and using booking code KFO.
