Alcohol comes to the Magic Kingdom
The new Be Our Guest Restaurant brings a new dining atmosphere to Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom, with dinners featuring fine French cuisine, wine, and beer. Huh? What? Alcohol in the Magic Kingdom? How can that be?
“It hasn't really made sense before but it makes sense when you're in a French restaurant,” Maribeth Bisienere, vice president of food and beverage and merchandise operations integration, told WESH Orlando.
“You cannot walk into a French restaurant and not get a glass of wine or beer,” Bisienere told the Orlando Sentinel. “It made more sense to do it than not to do it.”
“As part of the overall theming, we wanted to offer wine that enhances the guest experience and complement(s) the French-inspired cuisine,” said Stuart McGuire, beverage director, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, in a Disney press release. “The wines focus primarily on France’s famous wine growing regions, including Champagne, Alsace, Loire, Rhone, Burgundy and Bordeaux.”
While this is a first for regular guests at the Magic Kingdom park (alcohol has been served at private events for years), it's not a first for Magic Kingdom-style parks. Disneyland Paris has served alcohol from its first opening (attitudes toward alcohol differ greatly in Europe), and Disneyland Park serves alcohol in its exclusive Club 33. But Club 33 is behind a locked door and is only available to members of the exclusive club and their guests. This is the first public availability of alcohol to all park guests at one of the two original U.S. Magic Kingdom parks.
Twenty varieties of French and California wine will be available by the bottle or, in most cases, by the glass. Four varieties of French and Belgian beer will also be available. See a complete list here. Alcohol will not be allowed out of the restaurant, which will prevent guests from walking through the park with their adult beverages. Mixed drinks will not be served.
The decision was based on an effort to respond to guest requests. “We wanted to make the experience really match what guests were asking for,” Bisienere told the Orlando Business Journal.
This topic has been generating many conflicting opinions in the online Disney community, including on MousePlanet's MousePad discussion forums and Facebook page. What's your take? Is Walt Disney spinning in his grave, or is this one more sign of changing times, along with cast member beards and in-park Wi-Fi? Or is it both? Let us know in the comments below.

Be Our Guest Restaurant reveals details of decor, menu
Walt Disney World has now unveiled more details related to the decor and menu of the Be Our Guest Restaurant, debuting in just two months in New Fantasyland.
Guests will enter the restaurant by passing through a decayed gateway, crossing a stone bridge, and passing through wrought-iron gates decorated with six beastly figures along the sides. Entering the castle, guests will walk through the Armor Hallway, where six suits of armor stand guard. While dinner guests will enter directly into the Ballroom, lunch guests will first stop in the Beast's Parlor to place their orders at one of five interactive terminals.
The Ballroom dining room is designed to match the famed scene from the movie, with a vaulted ceiling, chandeliers, a terrazzo floor, and tall arched windows giving a view of a light snowfall in the evening sky. The West Wing dining room is darker, and contains the Beast's rose under a bell jar, dropping petals as the Beast's permanent fate approaches. The Rose Gallery dining room does not match a scene from the film, but rather, is inspired by the film in general. A seven-foot-tall music box in the center of the room features Belle and Beast dancing atop it, while the rest of the room features paintings, tapestries, floor mosaics, and more portray roses as well as characters and settings from the film.
The restaurant will seat 546 for lunch and 340 for dinner, as the Rose Gallery will be used as a staging area for dinner table service rather than a dining room.
The quick-service lunch will feature French bistro-style dishes such as tuna niçoise salad, croque monsieur, braised port coq au vin style, and more. Options for children ages 9 and under include a carved turkey sandwich, a Mickey Mouse-shaped turkey meatloaf, and seared mahi mahi.
Dinner service is more upscale, featuring a variety of appetizers including mussels Provençal or charcuterie (cured meats with cornichons, pickled onions, and toasted whole-grain bread). Entrees include a thyme-scented pork rack chop, rotisserie cornish hen, sauteed shrimp and scallops, and layered ratatouille. Dinner will also feature wine and beer service.
The restaurant's signature non-alcoholic drinks are an all-natural fruit juice punch and wild berry extract sweetened with organic cane juice and topped with lemon-lime foam, or an all-natural pure squeezed lemonade sweetened with organic cane juice and topped with wildberry foam. Referred to as L’amour Vrais, French for “true love,” they are available in a souvenir, castle-themed goblet for $18.99 or without the goblet for $4.19.
The restaurant opens November 19 and will use one QSR entitlement for lunch or one TSR entitlement for dinner on the Disney Dining Plan. Reservations are available online or by calling 407-WDW-DINE (407-939-3463), though the restaurant is said to be booked solid at least through the New Year.

Disney Vacation Club members get discounts on Premium Annual Passes, merchandise
Disney Vacation Club members have the opportunity to get a great deal on Premium Annual Passes from October 1 through December 31, 2012. Members will get nearly half off the regular price of a new Premium pass, paying $399 for the $699 pass. The Premium pass grants unlimited access to all four theme parks, both water parks, DisneyQuest, the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, Disney's Oak Trail Golf Course (greens fees only) and more. The discounted price compares with $397 for a 10-day pass with Park Hopper and Water Park Fun & More options, $425 for a new standard Annual Pass, or $385 for a DVC member renewal cost for a standard Annual Pass. The usual DVC member cost for a new Premium pass is $559, with a renewal costing $509.
The cost is for a Premium Annual Pass certificate, rather than an actual pass, so it will not be activated until it's used for the first time. Passes purchased on the offer can be redeemed any time through December 1, 2013, so even if you have a current pass, you can get the deal and hold the certificate until your current pass expires. If you've got a pass that expires between October 1 and December 31 this year, you might be able to get two certificates, use one to renew this year, and the other to renew again before the end of 2013. We need to confirm with Disney on that last point.
Members will also get on ongoing discount of 10 percent off of all qualifying merchandise at all Disney owned and operated merchandise locations at all Disney Parks and Resorts.
More information will be available on the Disney Vacation Club member site on October 1.

Disney World Moms Panel completes first stage of 2013 applications
The application period for the Walt Disney World Moms Panel was announced after the publication of last week's Walt Disney World Resort Update. The application period opened last Monday morning at 9 a.m. EDT and closed last Friday night at midnight EDT. Here's hoping that the thousands of you that read this column every week either saw my blog post late last week or spotted the information elsewhere and were able to submit your applications, if you were so inclined.
Those who did get their applications in have just taken the first step in a lengthy process. Following a series of written questions and submissions to shrink the field, the remaining candidates will face a final round of phone interviews. Those who make it through the process and are named to the panel will attend a training session in December, and officially be named to the panel in January.
Good luck to all who applied!
