2013 D23 Expo starts Friday | Fall 2013 Free Dining offer | Rumor roundup | Construction update | New Walt Disney World Official Album to be released | Quick takes | Crowd update

2013 D23 Expo starts Friday

D23 Expo, Disney's convention for its official D23 fan club, opens this Friday at the Anaheim Convention Center in California. The three-day event features a full schedule of panel discussions, celebrity appearances, live entertainment, and shopping opportunities to keep most Disney fans entertained, and we know we have readers from all over the world coming to attend the West coast event.

Last week we published our guide to help you make the most of the D23 Expo. If this is your first year attending the event, or you're a repeat visitors who wants to know what has changed this year, we hope our guide will help you plan your day(s) at Disney's largest official brand showcase.

The final Expo schedule and guidebook are now available on the D23 Expo website, and Disney has again released a application for mobile Web-enabled devices. The app lets you create a personalized Expo schedule, see venue maps and information, and view all of Disney's D23 social media content like Twitter and Facebook postings in one place.

MousePlanet is once again hosting the MousePlanet LOUNGE in booth 421 of the Collectors Forum, on the main level behind the Dream Store. We encourage you to stop by throughout the Expo. With so much to see and do, you need a place to relax and recharge your batteries—both mental and cellular! The MousePlanet LOUNGE is your home base for the Disney D23 Expo, offering a comfortable seating area, a charging station for your electronic devices, and the opportunity to meet MousePlanet columnists, Community Leaders, and fellow readers. We also have a host of special opportunities planned for our readers.

Rocks for CHOC

MousePlanet is proud to support Children's Hospital Orange County, and we've partnered with CHOC to kick off a unique FUNdraiser at the Disney D23 Expo.

Just like the rocks in “A Bug's Life,” CHOC Rocks have a deeper meaning. The tradition started with a young woman named Timmaree, who began painting rocks to give to the doctors and nurses while she was being treated at CHOC. She also sold them at fundraisers, signing hundreds of rocks for dedicated collectors. Today, Team Timmaree Rocks is one of the largest teams in the annual CHOC Walk, and her friends and family continue to host rock painting events in her memory.

A collection of rocks hand-painted by well-known local artists and Disney illustrators will be offered in an auction to benefit Children's Hospital Orange County. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Beloved artists, including Shag, Chip Foose, Dave Avanzino, Kevin Kidney, Jody Daily, Joe Yakovetic, Stacia Martin, Jeff Granito and Katie Kelly have each hand-painted a CHOC Rock, and MousePlanet is proud to offer them at auction via eBay's Giving Works program. You can view these rocks and our other auction items at the MousePlanet LOUNGE. One hundred percent of the proceeds from these auctions will go directly to Children's Hospital Orange County.

Get ready for Adventure

At the MousePlanet LOUNGE, you can sign up for our Fall 2013 Walt Disney World World Explorers event, or take home one of three MouseAdventure Vacation packets developed for you to keep your skills sharp between events.

Check your gear

Cameras and recording devices are not permitted in certain venues, as indicated in the Expo Guide Book and on the D23 Expo app. MousePlanet will again offer free, secure electronics check for our readers on a first-come, first-served basis.

The only constant is change, and you never know when that artist signing or video game demonstration you wanted to see will be moved, rescheduled, or extended due to popular demand. If you have a smartphone, we recommend downloading the official Disney D23 app, but also using Twitter and/or Facebook to stay up to date with the latest news from the Expo.

If you'll be at the Expo or just want to experience it with us online, follow MousePlanet's special D23 Expo Twitter account at MPatD23Expo for live updates throughout the show.

If you won't be at the Expo and don't want all of the chirping, follow MousePlanet on Facebook or Twitter for daily recaps.

We hope to see you there!

Fall 2013 Free Dining offer

As mentioned in last week's Update, there has been quite a bit of speculation and anticipation about the Fall 2013 Free Dining offer, but none of our MousePlanet travel partners had details they could share, and rumors published on other sites didn't pan out. Happily, we can now dispense with the rumors and the guesses, because WDW officially announced the Fall 2013 Free Dining offer last week.

This offer is a bit different than the promotion that just ended. Now when you book a full-price 6-night, 7-day Magic Your Way package (which includes your hotel room and theme park tickets), you receive a free dining plan based on the hotel you stay at:

  • Value Resort – receive the Quick Service Dining plan for free. You can upgrade to the Standard or Deluxe dining plan by paying the difference.
  • Moderate, Deluxe, or Deluxe Villa Resort – receive the Standard dining plan. You can upgrade to the Deluxe dining plan by paying the difference.

The offer is valid for arrivals most nights in these periods:

  • September 29 through October 2, 2013
  • October 18 through November 2, 2013
  • November 11–23, 2013
  • December 12–22, 2013

The promotion has these restrictions:

  • You must purchase a 6-day (or longer) Magic Your Way ticket for every member of your party.
  • You must book your travel by September 15.
  • You must book the same tickets and dining plan for every member of your party.
  • Children ages 3 to 9 must order from the children's menu where offered; children under age 3 are not eligible for free dining.
  • This offer excludes the campsites at Fort Wilderness, the Little Mermaid rooms at the Art of Animation Resort, and all 3-bedroom Villas.

For full details, visit the Disney special offer site. Book by phone at (407) 939-7729, call your favorite travel agent, or book online at the Walt Disney World website.

Special thanks to Mary Kraemer, vacation travel consultant with CruisingCo.com and MouseEarVacations, for the late-night heads-up when this offer went live Wednesday night, and also to Facebook member Dis-Girl, who also alerted us while we were gathering the details.

Fall 2013 room-only discounts

Are you ineligible for the new Free Dining offer, but still planning a Walt Disney World trip this fall? A new room-only promotion offers up to 30 percent off select rooms most nights in two date ranges:

  • September 29 through November 9, 2013 – you must book by September 15, 2013
  • November 10–22, 2013 and November 30 through December 23, 2013 – you must book by November 3, 2013
  • November 23–25, 2013 at the Deluxe and Deluxe Villa Resorts only – you must book by November 3, 2013
Resort Category Savings
Select Disney Deluxe Villa Resort Hotels 30 percent
Select Disney Deluxe Resort Hotels 30 percent
Select Disney Moderate Resort Hotels 20 percent
Select Disney Value Resort Hotels 15 percent

What is unusual about this offer is that the discount is available on the Art of Animation Resort Family Suites for some portion of the promotion. These rooms are usually excluded from promotional offers, so it's a good chance to check out the family suites if your travel dates work out. Still excluded from this offer are the campsites, three-bedroom villas, Little Mermaid Standard Rooms at Disney's Art of Animation Resort, and The Villas at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.

  • September 29 to October 5, 2013
  • October 20 to November 2, 2013
  • November 10–22, 2013
  • December 15–23, 2013

Even if you've already made your reservations or booked under the free dining plan offer, it's worth checking to see if the room-only discount might save you more. One of our readers reported that she saved $1,150 by rebooking a previous reservation. Full details, terms, and conditions are available on the Disney website.

Construction update

Jeff Kober caught up on happenings around Walt Disney World this weekend, including the expansion of the MyMagic+ infrastructure, and changes in Animal Kingdom.

MyMagic+ testing is again underway throughout most all of August. This is a new host station at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Photo by J. Jeff Kober.

When not in use, a leather cover, similar in material to the look at the Magic Kingdom but embossed with the Animal Kingdom logo, conceals the touch screen kiosks. Photo by J. Jeff Kober.

In addition to the central kiosks staffed by Guest Relations cast members, freestanding MyMagic+ kiosks are popping up around the theme parks, allowing users to re-adjust Fastpass+ plans and make other itinerary changes without using a smartphone. Registration opens today for MouseAdventure World Explorers

Join us on November 16 and 17 for an exploration of Walt Disney World like no other. Our fifth MouseAdventure event takes players all around Walt Disney World in a two-day challenge that is sure to make you see WDW in a whole new light.

Registration for our two-day MouseAdventure World Explorers event in Walt Disney World opens today, August 6 at 9 a.m. Pacific (that's noon for your East Coast players) online at MouseAdventure.com.

Pricing for this two-day event is $175 for a team of at least two players up to a maximum of four players. Registration does not include park admission (park hopper admission is required; water park admission is not).

The Coast to Coast Challenge

Every team that participated in the Spring 2013 MouseAdventure event in Disneyland and plays in MouseAdventure World Explorers V in Florida, will receive a special recognition of their dedication.

And, for the true competitors, there will be a special prize awarded to the team with the highest combined score for the Spring 2013 MouseAdventure Musical event at Disneyland and MouseAdventure World Explorers V in Florida. This prize will be awarded at the resort results meet in Florida.

To participate in this challenge, teams must have a score from the Spring 2013 MouseAdventure Musical event at Disneyland (Basic or Advanced division) and complete the Fall 2013 event in Walt Disney World. The majority of players from the team must participate in both events.

Quick takes…

…Last night, we learned about a scheduled registration system outage that impacts the Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Resort, and Aulani (the Disney resort in Hawaii). The outage runs through mid-afternoon today, and Disney warns, “During this time, our systems will not be fully functional.” Full details on our MousePad discussion forum.

…A continuing reminder to those planning a stay at the All-Star Sports Resort in the coming months: The hotel's food court is now closed for refurbishment through mid-December. During this time, snacks and drinks will be available from a grab-and-go location in the former arcade, which was recently converted to this purpose. Hot food will be available from the All-Star Music Food Court, with Disney offering bus service between the resorts. Both the new food court and the restored arcade are expected to reopen in December.

All Walt Disney World Resort rooms with the exception of DVC Villas, the family suites at the Art of Animation and All-Star Movie resorts, and the cabins at Fort Wilderness are impacted. Disney says “the schedule for replacing the refrigerators at these Resorts is expected to last several months.”

In the interim, if you have a reservation at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel and need a refrigerator for medical reasons,we recommend contacting your resort directly to inquire about availability during your trip.
