Marathon Weekend concludes
The Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend took place this past week around the resort, beginning on Wednesday with the opening of the fitness expo and on Thursday with the first race, the 3.1-mile Family Fun Run 5K. This race was the first step for those who had signed up for the Dopey Challenge, which required participants to complete a 5K, a 10K, a (13.1-mile) half-marathon, and a (26.2-mile) full marathon on consecutive days (for a total of 48.4 miles). There were approximately 50,000 entrants in the race events taking place over the extended weekend. It was the inaugural year for the (6.2-mile) 10K course, which passed through Epcot and then looped around Boardwalk and Beach Club.
The two Brazilian men who have traded off first place in the marathon the past few years were at it again on Sunday, with Fredison Costa beating Adriano Bastos to the line. Costa finished in 2:21:39, while Bastos took 2:22:55. The women's winner was Angela Brito of Ecuador, with a time of 2:47:44.
Although there are always winners, many more stories are told in the rest of the pack. One of these was highlighted by runDisney on the Disney Parks Blog; a mother and daughter reunited to run the half marathon together after 40 years of separation.

Congratulations to all who completed a race this past weekend, including our Team MousePlanet participants. Staff member Lani Teshima completed the inaugural Dopey Challenge, and was still smiling after 48.6 miles over four days!

Spice Road Table opens
Morocco's new restaurant, Spice Road Table, quietly opened at Epcot over the weekend for walk-up diners. The new location offers a tapas-like menu, with small plates to share. There is indoor as well as outdoor seating that allows for views of Illuminations on the lagoon, although views of some parts of the show will be somewhat obstructed by the nearby islands.

There is a standing bar area inside the restaurant for those who just want to sample some of the drink offerings. The full bar features beer, wine, and spirits from several Mediterranean countries, including Greece, Morocco, Turkey, and Spain. The neighboring gift shop has also reopened, offering packaged food and drink as well as apparel and other gift items.

Reviews of the new location have been mixed, with many criticizing the prices versus the size of the servings offered. The location hasn't been busy yet, but that is likely to change as word spreads and the restaurant is added to the online reseration system.
Traditional Fastpass loses more ground
Tuesday was the last day for traditional Fastpass at the Magic Kingdom. All paper Fastpass machines will be removed and attractions will only be reserved via the Fastpass+ system. Those guests who are not staying at a Disney resort must book their Fastpass+ on arrival at the resort. MousePlanet contributing writer Jeff Kober has some tips on how to navigate this process on MousePlanet today.
Maleficent joins the Festival of Fantasy
After several teases, the Disney Parks Blog revealed a new float for the upcoming Festival of Fantasy parade at the Magic Kingdom, featuring Maleficent's dragon form. The new float has a very steampunk feel, giving the appearance that the dragon is constructed of riveted-together sheet metal. The dragon joins several other floats that have been previously revealed in sketches. The float is 35 feet long and 26 feet tall; the height of the parade floats will affect this year's holiday decorations, which will not be able to drape across Main Street.

Resorts
As reported in July, some refrigerators in non-Disney Vacation Club rooms at Walt Disney World are being replaced due to a product defect. All Walt Disney World Resort rooms with the exception of DVC Villas, the family suites at the Art of Animation and All-Star Movie resorts, and the cabins at Fort Wilderness are impacted. Disney says “the schedule for replacing the refrigerators at these Resorts is expected to last several months.”
In the interim, if you have a reservation at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel and need a refrigerator for medical reasons, we recommend contacting your resort directly to inquire about availability during your trip. The hotel should be able to arrange for one if your room does not yet have a new refrigerator, but supplies may be limited while they work to replace all of the malfunctioning units.
