Walt Disney World raises ticket prices for second time in a year
With no warning save an exclusive tip-off to the Orlando Sentinel, Walt Disney World raised prices this past Sunday for the second time in less than 12 months. The price change went into effect just hours after the Sentinel's article ran Saturday night, and some visitors leaving the Magic Kingdom late that evening posted photos of workers changing the signs above the Transportation and Ticketing Center booths.
A one-day ticket to the Magic Kingdom is now $99, and one-day tickets to the other three theme parks are $94. Prices for Magic Your Way base tickets, most Magic Your Way upgrades and most annual passports increased 2 to 5 percent as well, although prices for the water park and Disney Quest remain unchanged.
The latest price change saw a rare price drop for one product: Disney has implemented a new tiered system for the park hopper upgrade to the Magic Your Way base tickets, with one price for 1- to 3-day tickets, and another price for 4- to 10-day tickets. It now costs $60 to add the park hopper option to a 4-day ticket, up $1, but the park hopper option is now $49 for 1-, 2- and 3-day tickets, a $10 drop.
Walt Disney World and Disneyland last raised admission prices at the same time on June 2, 2013. With the 2013 price hike, Disney also introduced for the first time a tiered ticketing system, charging more for single-day admission to the Magic Kingdom park than to the other three theme parks. That increase also saw the price of Multi-day Magic Your Way base tickets increase 5 to 9 percent across the board, and annual passports jump as high as 17%.

Disney adds fifth weekend and new entertainment to Star Wars Weekends
Disney has expanded Star Wars Weekends for 2014, adding a fifth weekend, a new nighttime entertainment offering, and nightly fireworks to the popular event held at Disney's Hollywood Studios park.
- Weekend I: May 16 – 18, 2014
- Weekend II: May 23 – 25, 2014
- Weekend III: May 30 – June 1, 2014
- Weekend IV: June 6 – 8, 2014
- Weekend V: June 13 – 15, 2014
The 2014 theme is “Join the Rebellion,” and the Disney Parks Blog released the first look at the event logo last week.

Implied in the announcement, and later confirmed by Disney social media manager Gary Buchanan in a response to a question asked on the Disney Parks Blog, is news that the Hyperspace Hoopla has been sent to “Rebel Alliance 'retirement'” starting this year. The nighttime entertainment offering was essentially a dance-off between Star Wars characters, and some felt the show had gone too far astray in its portrayal of the characters. The as-yet-unspecified new “evening experience” will take place on Hollywood Blvd., and some have speculated that it may be as simple as a farewell moment with the characters.
The addition of nightly fireworks should be welcome news to everyone, Star Wars fan or not. Fireworks are only offered at Hollywood Studios on special occasions and holidays, and often draw huge crowds to that park just because of the novelty factor. Five weekends of fireworks is a welcome addition to the overall Walt Disney World entertainment offering.
Olympian sets new course record at Disney Princess Half Marathon
A three-time Olympian from New Zealand smashed the course record at the 2014 Princess Half Marathon this weekend, completing the 13.1-mile course in 1:11:49, shaving nearly 6 minutes off the previous record. Kim Smith, 32, is a member of the New Balance running team, and currently holds the world record for the fastest half-marathon run by a woman (1:07:36).
This was Smith's first runDisney event, and she considered it a training run for the upcoming London Marathon, happening in April. She told runDisney, ““Running through the Magic Kingdom was probably the best part of the race. The crowds there were great and everyone is cheering you on,” Smith said. “It’s just a fun event and pretty low-key for an elite athlete to do. But definitely a lot of fun and I’d recommend it to people out there.”

Sisters Kimberly Ruck and Alyssa Kulik tied for second and thirrd place when they crossed the finish line hand-in-hand about 15 minutes after Smith. Disney estimates a field of 40,000 runners, mostly women, participated in the Princess weekend races, which included the runDisney Kids Races, Cinderella Royal Family 5K, inaugural Disney Princess Enchanted 10K, and signature Disney Princess Half Marathon.
About 6,000 participants competed in the Inaugural Glass Slipper Challenge, which meant running Saturday's10K and then Sunday's half-marathon, on consecutive days.

The Princess Half Marathon was also the culminating event for runners who wanted to earn runDisney's pink Coast to Coast medal by completing both of runDisney's women-focused events in 2014. Disney has not yet released numbers, but it seemed that thousands of runners proudly displayed the special medal offered to those who completed both the Tinker Bell Half Marathon at Disneyland in January, and the Princess Half Marathon.
Congratulations to all of the participants, and to the Team MousePlanet runners who came out to complete the Glass Slipper Challenge and achieve their Coast to Coast goals. Results for all events are now available on the runDisney website.
Food and Wine Festival expanded
Get ready for even more days and nights of the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival, as Disney expands the 2014 event to a record 53 days. The event begins Friday, September 19 and runs all the way through Monday, November 10. Disney has not released any additional details about the event, and it's unlikely we'll see more information until after the Flower and Garden Festival winds up.

Paul Cluver is a family-owned, family-run wine business located in the cool-climate Elgin Valley, approximately 70km south-east of Cape Town. The property has been in ownership of the Cluver Family since 1896. Recognized as pioneers of wine in the area, the focus is on producing elegant wines that are expressive of the terroir. The wine business forms part of larger holistic farming business called 'De Rust Estate'. In addition to the vineyards and cellar, there are apple and pear orchards, a Hereford stud and eco-tourism activities, including amphitheater concerts, on the farm. This 2000+ hectare estate forms part of the UNESCO world heritage site, the Kogelberg Biosphere. Half of the estate has been set aside for conservation into perpetuity.

…Casey's Corner in the Magic Kingdom has reopened after a long refurbishment, and now boasts an expanded indoor seating area. To make room for the new tables and chairs, the quaint bleacher-style seating area and television screen showing Disney animated shorts was removed, though much of the dining area's wall decor remains in place.

…A few weeks ago, we posted a photo of long lines for one set of Magic Kingdom FastPass+ kiosks, and noted that another set of nearby kiosks had nearly no line. At the time, we suggested checking the park map to find another kiosk if the one you were at had a long line, but reader Helga wrote in to say that she had just returned from Walt Disney World and that the kiosks weren't marked on the park maps. Walt Disney World released new park maps last week, and the FastPass+ kiosks and MyMagic+ service centers in each park are now called out on the maps.

…Much of the signed celebrity memorabilia and photos previously offered for sale at Sid Cahuenga's One of a Kind shop in Disney's Hollywood Studios is now available for purchase at the AFI store at the exit of the Studio Backlot Tour. The Backlot Tour and the AFI Showcase are currently closed for refurbishment, but the shop is open.

…AT&T, which became the official wireless sponsor for the U.S. Disney theme parks last summer, sent out a press release last week to announce its installation of a new system of outdoor and indoor distributed antenna systems, repeaters, and small cells to boost AT&T coverage around both the California and Florida Disney Resorts, with much of the work focused at Walt Disney World. According to the press release, the new installations are in place in all four theme parks, as well as Downtown Disney. Most of the new installations are said to be located in offices and cast member areas, but park visitors who use AT&T should notice a difference as well. Data connectivity is crucial to Disney's Next Gen plans, as visitors become increasingly dependent on the My Disney Experience app to manage nearly every aspect of their vacation.

…A few weeks ago, the Starbucks locations in both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure replaced the classic Starbucks bakery menu with La Boulange items that most Starbucks coffee shops launched last year. [Starbucks purchased the San Francisco-based bakery in mid-2012 to expand its lineup of food offerings.] We checked with the Walt Disney World locations, and those stores have not yet rolled out the La Boulange product line, but expect to do so “soon.” The Disney locations in Walt Disney World are operated by the same company that operates the Starbucks cafes at Universal Studios Orlando, and it's expected that all of the locations will make the switch at the same time. This change will not affect the Disney-produced items sold in the locations.
…As work continues on the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train coaster, a new Disney Vacation Club location has opened on the side of the mountain facing The Little Mermaid attraction. Imagineers have tucked some interesting artwork into this space, and it's well worth stopping by to take a quick look. A statue of King Triton outside the office is sure to be a popular photo location as well.

…Construction continues along the Rivers of America to widen the walkway running between Splash Mountain and the Haunted Mansion. During parades, this path is the only way to walk between the back of Frontierland and Liberty Square, and frequently becomes impassably congested.
Widening of the pathway along the Rivers of America should help ease parade-time congestion when the main street is closed to pedestrian traffic. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
…For those readers who have asked about the mysterious disappearance of the Disney Blend coffee, a new Disney Diner Blend appeared on store shelves a few weeks ago. There seems to be no difference in beans (still 100 percent Arabica), but cast members were unable to tell us if the Diner Blend is a different roast than the Disney Blend. One thing we can tell you for sure—the new coffee is several dollars more expensive per 12-ounce can.
Disney's Diner Blend coffee (blue cans, left) has a different name, logo and price than the original Disney Blend, but we don't know if it tastes any different. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.
…The ongoing Disney Springs construction project has prompted Disney to relocate some of their food trucks to other areas of Downtown Disney. This weekend also saw one of the trucks dispatched to provide snacks to hungry spectators at the Disney Princess half marathon.

As reported in July, some refrigerators in non-Disney Vacation Club rooms at Walt Disney World are being replaced due to a product defect. All Walt Disney World Resort rooms with the exception of DVC Villas, the family suites at the Art of Animation and All-Star Movie resorts, and the cabins at Fort Wilderness are impacted. Disney says “the schedule for replacing the refrigerators at these Resorts is expected to last several months.”
In the interim, if you have a reservation at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel and need a refrigerator for medical reasons, we recommend contacting your resort directly to inquire about availability during your trip. The hotel should be able to arrange for one if your room does not yet have a new refrigerator, but supplies may be limited while they work to replace all of the malfunctioning units.
