New Downtown Disney garage opens to public
Just in time for the holiday rush, Walt Disney World opened the new Downtown Disney parking garage last week according to Rikki Niblett from our sponsor TouringPlans.com
The garage opens with plenty of space to park along with escalators to move guests through its several floors. Photo by J. Jeff Kober.
The garage is located on the West Side of Downtown Disney. A walking path has been constructed from the garage to the shopping district near the Downtown Disney AMC theaters.
Above each parking space are lights that can indicate to cars from a distance the availability of open parking spaces. Photo by J. Jeff Kober.
Drivers using the parking garage will notice a great piece of new technology in the new garage: a light over each parking spot indicating if it's open or full. If the light is green, a spot is available; if it's red, it is occupied. This means easier navigation in the garage due to cars not needing to go up and down the aisles to find an open spot.
Construction work continues on the garage and the plan is to have all of the garage and its technology ready for official opening by December.
Disney's Animal Kingdom honored with international award
Last week, the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) awarded Disney's Animal Kingdom's Wilderness Explorers with the Award for Outstanding Achievement – Interactive Park Attraction on a Limited Budget.
This week Wilderness Explorers at Disney's Animal Kingdom won the TEA award for Outstanding Achievement–Interactive Park Attraction on a Limited Budget. Photo by J. Jeff Kober.
Wilderness Explorers utilizes an interactive experience where visitors talk with cast members at different stations across the park to learn about nature, and then collect badges at each station to complete their expedition.
TEA cited Disney's creativity in developing this attraction:
Disney has incorporated storytelling and gaming to create an experience that is intimate and personal in its connection to the guests, yet wisely recognizes that technology would be a distraction and remove guests from nature. Guests are given a role in the story – becoming a Wilderness Explorer – that was a poignant, aspirational story of a core identifiable character from the Pixar film. This intersection point between film story world, live animals and the beautiful habitats within Disney’s Animal Kingdom is a huge part of why this attraction is effective … This unique attraction is worthy of honors as much for its craft as for the authenticity and cleverness of implementation within a unique park environment.
TEA is a non-profit association representing creators, developers, and designers from around the world.
Friends meet goal to hit every Walt Disney World ride in one day.
The second time proved to be the charm for two friends who aspired to ride all 46 rides across the four Walt Disney World theme parks in one day.
Shane Lindsay and Ted Tamburio shared their experience with WKMG Local 6 Orlando in which they hit all four theme parks in 17 hours to experience 46 rides. Over the course of the day, the men logged in nearly 22 miles according the the WKMG Local 6 report. They took no meal breaks, drank from water bottles, used FastPass+ and park/ride schedules to plan out their mission.
Even if something like this adventure sounds interesting to you, Lindsay advises that it is meant for grown ups only due to the pace and travel required.
The pair attempted this feat last year, but hit a snag near their goal when thunderstorms hit the Walt Disney World area and shut down a number of the rides as they approached the last leg of their journey.
ESPN Wide World of Sports hosts basketball tournament
Basketball fans may want to stop by the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend to catch the Orlando Classic (formerly the Old Spice Classic) basketball tournament.
The event, which runs November 27-30, features a pre-season basketball tournament hosted by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in Division 1 college basketball. Kansas, Michigan State, Marquette, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Rhode Island, Rider, and Santa Clara will vie for the tourney championship this year.
Tickets can be purchased by calling (407) 939-4263 or by visiting the event's official website. The best deal available is the All-Tournament Ticket, which includes all 12 games for $150 each plus taxes and fees.
A full tournament bracket is also available at the event's official website.
Disney Springs construction update
Disney Parks Blog announced numerous updates to the Downtown Springs construction project underway in the current Downtown Disney area.
Workers recently installed the “Springs Bottling Co.” marquee above the future Morimoto Asia location.
The Waterview Stage now offers nightly entertainment for visitors

The Food Trucks at Exposition Park on the West Side opens soon as a permanent home for the Downtown Disney food trucks. Visitors can also take advantage of the new shaded seating area.
The food truck space now has vegetation hanging from the tracks. Rumor is that seating will not be available on the upper deck. Photo by J. Jeff Kober.
The Landing area of Disney Springs has a new pedestrian walkway between the Portobello and Paradiso 37 restaurants. The walkway access expands to the West Side later this month.
Check back for future Disney Springs construction updates.
Frozen gingerbread castle displayed in Disney's Contemporary Resort
One of the most beautiful features at Walt Disney World during the holiday season is the variety of gingerbread creations featured in the resorts. This year, Disney's Contemporary Resort decided to bring a small part of Arendelle to its lobby by creating a gingerbread castle from the smash movie Frozen. Queen Elsa, Princess Anna, Kristoff and Olaf (who is actually hiding in 12 places around the castle) can be seen in the giant display.
Disney released a fun time-lapse video of the castle construction. Take a look!

Disney's Animal Kingdom begins latest expansion project
MousePlanet photographer J. Jeff Kober sent in a progress photo from the construction site of the upcoming Africa Marketplace area in Disney's Animal Kingdom. Scheduled to open in early 2015, the African marketplace expects to host a new quick service restaurant which serves African-style food. Visitors can also expect to see an overall size expansion of Africa and some new retail shopping locations.

Walt Disney World Holiday Event Guide
Heading to Walt Disney World during the holiday season? Here's a helpful guide of all the special events happening around the resort to help you plan a magical holiday trip!
Magic Kingdom

A Frozen Holiday Wish: The Walt Disney World holiday season kicked off with a live streaming event of the new A Frozen Holiday Wish show in front of Cinderella Castle. According to Disney Parks Blog, the resort will share a number of live streaming events throughout the season. Didn't get a chance to catch the live stream? Watch the video below!

You can also head over to our MousePad forum to get a full review of the show.
Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party: This annual hard-ticket party shows off the best and and most festive side of Walt Disney World during the holidays. Here is the rundown of the daily events you can expect at the Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party:
The event runs from 7 p.m. to midnight on select nights through December 19. In addition to the returning Christmas Party attractions like the the fireworks show, this year debuts new Frozen additions to Mickey's Once Upon a Christmastime Parade, a new meet-and-greet with Jack Skellington as Sandy Claws in Storybook Circus, and the “Holiday Hootenanny!” at the Diamond Horseshoe.
The Entertainment Schedule is packed, so you'll need to decide what's most important to see during your 5 hours at the party:
- Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas Parade featuring the Frozen characters – 8:15 and 10:30 p.m.
- A Frozen Holiday Wish – 6:15 and 8:00 p.m.
- Celebrate the Magic – 9:15 p.m.
- Holiday Wishes – 9:30 p.m.
- Celebrate the Season – 7:30, 10:05 and 11:20 p.m.
Since A Frozen Holiday Wish and Celebrate the Magic are offered on non-party nights, you can safely skip those and see them another night if you want to maximize your party time.
There are two Dance Parties, with some interesting characters:
- Holiday Hootenanny at the Diamond Horseshoe, featuring the Country Bears, Clarabelle Cow, Horace Horsecollar, and Clara Cluck.
- Club Tinsel at Cosmic Rays, featuring Phineas and Ferb
Plus, there are 18 Character Appearance spots marked on the event map. The big new addition is Sandy Claws, making his first event appearance at Storybook Circus.
Cocoa and cookies (or “healthy alternatives,” should you want them) are available at:
- Sunshine Tree Terrace
- Tortuga Tavern
- Columbia Harbour House
- Pinocchio Village Haus
- Tomorrowland Terrace
- Cosmic Ray's Starlight Caf
- The Crystal Palace
Event merchandise, including a pin, t-shirt, ornament and limited edition Magic Band, are available at:
- Emporium
- Frontier Trading Post (pin only)
- Ye Olde Christmas Shop (Shirts, pin, ornaments only)
- Big Top Souvenirs (Magic Band only)
- Star Traders (shirt and pin only)
Most park rides are open during the event, including the Jingle Cruise and the new Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Based on wait times during Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party, cast members said the line for the Mine Train is only about 30 minutes. I'm not a big fan of doing rides during the special events, since you can do those during normal operating hours, but people who could not get a FastPass+ for this new ride may want to take advantage of the shortest standby lines you're likely to see.
Epcot
Epcot is beautiful and lots of fun during the holiday season with a series of events that all ages will love:

…A number of Disney fan sites reported that the Magic Kingdom opened the new indoor standby queue at Peter Pan's Flight in Fantasyland. The new queue features a walk through the Darling's house with beautiful paintings and images that tell the story of Peter Pan, along with detailed features of the children's nursery and other areas of the home.
…Disney filed a notice of commencement regarding the removal of Mickey's Sorcerer's Hat from Disney's Hollywood Studios. This document follows earlier confirmation from Walt Disney World about the removal of the park's icon on Hollywood Boulevard. Disney still has not issued any formal statements regarding what may replace the hat.
…The Disney Food Blog reported that Epcot's Spice Road Table is currently accepting dining reservations for dates beginning on December 2, 2014. The blog posted a screen shot of the restaurant's Reservations page to demonstrate availability. Disney has made no formal announcement of this feature, yet, though and it is unclear if this is a temporary feature for just the holiday season or if it will continue beyond January 1, 2015.
…The Orlando Sentinel reported last week that The Four Seasons Resort at Walt Disney World earned a AAA five diamond award. The Four Seasons was the only resort in the Orlando area to receive this prestigious award. “The AAA Five Diamond Award is a true testament not only to the incredible amenities our resort offers, but to our first-rate team of employees, who go above and beyond every day delivering exceptional guest service,” said Thomas Steinhauer, regional vice president of Four Seasons Resort, Orlando, in a press release.
…In Walt Disney World merchandise news, fans looking for holiday gift ideas have a wealth of options as the parks introduced a variety of new product lines including: a holiday collection for the home with items such as a mug and cookie plate for Santa, plush toys, stockings, tablecloths, candy and many other goodies; the new Frozen Gift Card Holiday Pin series, which is a collection of gift cards featuring the main characters from Frozen that can be used on almost anything in the parks and comes with a collector's pin also featuring one of the four major characters: Elsa, Anna, Kristoff and Olaf; and yet another idea for Frozen fanatics, a new makeup collection from Beautifully Disney with makeup colors inspired by the movie. The collection has eye shadow palettes, lipstick, a nail polish line and much more!
Discussion of the Week
MousePad forum member StarTourist is returning to Walt Disney World after a long hiatus and is taking on a big challenge.
Yeah, we're doing the most horrendous thing imaginable: We're headed to Walt Disney World at Easter-time. Haven't done that since WDW was a two-gate, one water park resort back in the Eighties.
Normally, we head down in March or late October through pre-Thanksgiving November. We are Disney veterans, and pretty much know the ins and outs of it all. But even I am skeptical about visiting Easter week. We're starting the trip the day before Easter, and will be staying six days afterwards. DVC at Old Key West, btw.
Very generally speaking, what horrors should I expect? What would someone like myself, who never ventures to WDW during peak times, need to do to make it a vacation with as few ultra crowded issues as possible?
One more thing: We haven't been to WDW since the Magic Bands were introduced. Need advice with them as well, especially pertaining to the topic at hand.
Thanks!

All Walt Disney World Resort rooms—with the exception of DVC Villas, the family suites at the Art of Animation and All-Star Movie resorts, and the cabins at Fort Wilderness—are impacted. Disney says “the schedule for replacing the refrigerators at these Resorts is expected to last several months.”
In the interim, if you have a reservation at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel and need a refrigerator for medical reasons, we recommend contacting your resort directly to inquire about availability during your trip. The hotel should be able to arrange for one if your room does not yet have a new refrigerator, but supplies may be limited while they work to replace all of the malfunctioning units.
