Rivers of Light debut delayed at Animal Kingdom
Disney announced last week that the debut of Rivers of Light has been delayed at least until mid-May, several weeks beyond the official April 22 opening previously announced.

The new show is the centerpiece of Walt Disney World's summer promotional program called Awaken Summer and features prominently in the marketing. Disney had already invited hundreds of local and national media to the debut of the show in two weeks at Walt Disney World. There has been no comment from Disney about the cause of the delay, saying only that they needed to “give the team more time to bring these innovative experiences to life in a way we know will exceed our guests’ expectations.”

Several people have posted videos from daytime tests of the Rivers of Light floats on open water, giving a unique look at the show.

Animal Kingdom park hours remain unchanged for April, signaling that the Nighttime Magic at the Tree of Life and nighttime Kilimanjaro Safaris will not open until Rivers of Light is ready.
Disney released two videos last week to promote the nighttime Tree of Life effects, and the Awaken Summer marketing campaign. Sharp-eyed viewers may notice that footage from Disneyland's “Mickey and the Magical Map” show are featured in the commercial, presumably to reference the new “Mickey's Royal Friendship Faire” show that opens this spring.

Disney Early Morning Magic
Last month we wrote about Disney After Hours, an exclusive added-cost event which offers a small group of visitors free run of the Magic Kingdom park for three hours after it closes to day guests. We're eagerly waiting for reports from the first event, scheduled for this Thursday. The $149 price tag for that event was off-putting to many readers, and even those who said it might be worth the cost balked at the timing, saying there was no way families with young children could keep them up that late.
Now Disney has introduced another extended-hours event, called Disney Early Morning Magic. This event offers admission into Fantasyland two hours before the park opens to the general public, along with breakfast at Pinocchio Village Haus in Fantasyland. Peter Pan’s Flight, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, and The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh will all be open during the event, which should give you plenty of time to eat and ride as many times as you could want.
Disney Early Morning Magic is $69 for adults and $59 for children ages 3-9, plus tax. With a lower price point, this event might be an easier sell, especially to families with kids who are up before dawn anyway.
Replying to questions asked on the Disney Parks Blog, Editorial Content Manager Jennifer Fickley-Baker stated that Disney Early Morning Magic will be offered on different dates than the Extra Magic Hours program, which offers Walt Disney World resort hotel guests the benefit of extra time in the theme parks one hour before they open or three hours after they close to the general public. Disney Early Morning Magic is currently scheduled most Tuesdays and Saturdays through June, while morning Extra Magic Hours are scheduled most Fridays through that same period.
Sense of Africa Tour at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge
Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge debuted a new tour last week, giving visitors an opportunity to engage all five senses as they explore the resort and the animal care program. The Sense of Africa Tour begins with breakfast at Boma, the hotel's African-themed buffet restaurant. After breakfast, tour guests get to visit some of the backstage habitats of animals from the resort's savanna, including okapi, giraffe, ostriches and red river hogs.
The photos Disney shared of the experience show one guest feeding a giraffe, and another young guest touching an okapi. Despite the “experiences may vary” disclaimer on the tour, it certainly seems that Disney is advertising the opportunity to get close enough to the animals to engage your sense of touch, something not offered on other tours of the Animal Kingdom Lodge or theme park.
That exclusive opportunity comes with an equally exclusive price tag. The tour is $249 per person, which includes breakfast. Disney Vacation Club members and annual passholders receive a 15% discount. Tours are offered Tuesday and Saturday mornings. Call 407-939-8687 to book.
FastPass+ introduces welcome changes
Disney this week rolled out some welcome changes to the FastPass+ system that really will help visitors save time when using the system. Here's a breakdown of the new changes, and how they can help you.
New changes to the FastPass+ system will make it easier for visitors to pick return times and manage their FP+ reservations.
- You can now book 1, 2, or 3 FP+ reservations. Disney no longer forces you to book all 3 FP+ reservations, which is actually good news for everyone else using the system. No longer will you be forced to make or accept “placeholder” FP+ reservations you don't intend to keep, which frees up that spot for another visitor.
- You can now choose your return time. Gone is the Quick Picks option, which “suggested” return times and companion attractions. Under the new system, you pick an attraction, and pick the return time you want (from a provided list of available return times). You can search for return times by morning / afternoon / evening, or get very specific and search in 30-minute windows. This is especially handy when you're trying to work around another commitment, like a dining reservation or non-FP show.
- You can make additional FP+ reservations from your phone. Visitors who use the My Disney Experience app can finally say goodbye to the endless lines at the kiosks, and make their additional FP+ reservations directly from their smartphone after they've used their first three passes. This is a huge time saver, and can even be done on the go, which is handy because:
- You can park hop. While the system still limits you to using your first three FP+ reservations in one theme park, you can make your fourth and subsequent FP+ reservations at a different theme park (assuming you have a park hopper ticket).
- You can micro-manage your group. It's easier to add and remove individual people from your Fastpass+ reservations on a per-ride basis. This is handy for families or groups with different interests. For example, one parent can make FP+ reservations for themselves and taller / more adventurous child(ren) on one ride, while the other parent books a FP+ for the younger / more fearful child(ren) on a gentler ride at the same time. Then everyone can regroup for the next FP+ experience.
These changes still have not solved one major problem with FastPass+: the nighttime spectacular penalty. If you use one of your 3 FP+ reservations for reserved viewing to a nighttime show, you pretty much limit yourself to just three FP+ for the day. You can only make a fourth or subsequent reservation after you've used the first three. If your final FP+ return time isn't until late at night, you lose the opportunity to make additional FP+ reservations that day.
Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party dates
Mark your calendars, here are the official dates for Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party at the Magic Kingdom:
- November 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15, 18, 27, 29
- December 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11, 13, 15, 16, 18, 22
Disney has not released pricing for the event. Tickets will go on sale later this spring, along with tickets for Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.
Studios still life
Contributing photographer Alan Dalinka took advantage of beautiful spring weather to photograph the construction happenings around Disney's Hollywood Studios. He also caught the new Star Wars show on Center Stage, and ventured into the Writer's Block for a look at their new menu of bar snacks and adult beverages.

Amid all of the real work walls, a photo backdrop has been reinstalled in the Muppet Courtyard. The backdrop gives the illusion that the pathway is also closed, but in reality it's still open to pedestrians. We're not sure why Disney chose this time to put that wall back in use now—it's not as if the area is lacking in closed roads and construction walls.
The gate inspired by a scene in the Muppet*Vision 3D movie (which had been open for months or years) has been returned to the position where it creates an optical illusion that the pathway is closed. Guests are still permitted to walk through this gateway. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.
Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away
Far, far away is where you can expect to stand if you don't arrive early enough for this new Star Wars show in front of the Chinese Theater / Great Movie Ride. Unfortunately for shorter viewers, Alan reports that the sight lines are poor for most of the audience.
The new “Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away” show is presented on the Center Stage in front of the Chinese Theater several times each day. It consists of video clips shown on three retractable screens and brief appearances by droids and costumed Star Wars characters accompanied, of course, by the stirring Star Wars music by composer John Williams. The sight lines of the new show do not allow for easy viewing, particularly by shorter guests. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka (while holding his camera (by hand since selfie-sticks are banned) about eight feet above the ground).
Symphony in the Stars: A Galactic Spectacular Dessert Party is open for reservations for most nights, currently scheduled through the end of April. Not including Park Admission, the price is $69.00 per adult (age 10 and over) and $39.00 for children (ages 3 to 9); tax and gratuity are included. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.
Writer's Stop
This little spot around the corner from the Sci-Fi Dine-In seems never to really have found its niche, serving as a coffee shop-slash-housewares-store on the edge of the Streets of America. Now it sits at the end of the line, just steps away from the future construction site for Star Wars Land and Pixar Place. Disney has decided to turn the shop into a sort of lounge for the adjacent Sci-Fi Dine-In, adding a menu of adult beverages and bar snacks.

The family-run company made news last year when it released two officially-licensed Star Wars ice cream flavors. While Disney has not said exactly where the new shop will open, we suspect it might be in the former Seashore Sweets space next to the Flying Fish Cafe.
