Walt Disney World Resort Update for April 4–10, 2017

Writer's note: Well, I hope you got through April Fools' Day without falling for any major pranks. Now that it has passed, I took a look at the more serious business of Walt Disney World security at the Magic Kingdom and the Monorail Resorts that saw their latest round of major changes just yesterday. I also encountered the latest updates to the My Disney Experience App. Meanwhile, the crowds around the Resort continue to ebb and flow as different regions take their spring breaks. So, we have a lot to cover: the news, Views around the World, One Passholder's Tip, the “This and That” section featuring several Disney Vacation Club Member events and more.

On April Fools' Day, I asked @WDWToday (the “official” Twitter handle for Walt Disney World Resort's Guest Services cast) why the ads keep saying that Pandora opens May 27 when the store is open. In case you were not aware, Pandora-The World of Avatar opens at Disney's Animal Kingdom on May 27; the Pandora jewelry store at Disney Springs has been open since Town Center debuted last year. Now back to our regular weekly Update coverage. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Changes Made to Magic Kingdom Security

Two weeks ago, in our Walt Disney World Resort Update for March 21-27, 2017, we noted that changes were on their way to the Transportation and Ticket Center, which we thought could represent just the beginning of a number of security changes around the Magic Kingdom area. Well, last Tuesday, hours after we published last week's Update, the Orlando Sentinel reported that Disney would be opening new security checkpoints at the TTC and the Monorail Resorts on April 3.

Magic Kingdom security stations outside the park's gates continued regular operation through this past weekend. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

As of April 3, Magic Kingdom's main entry plaza is once again wide open, with the former security screening stations still temporarily providing shade. It is likely the structures will be removed soon. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Yesterday, April 3, the security changes at Transportation and Ticket Center, Monorail Resorts, and Magic Kingdom went into effect. How the changes impact a visit depend upon how guests arrive at the

Magic Kingdom:

Transportation and Ticket Center: Monorails and Ferryboats

Unless traveling by monorail from a Monorail Resort or from a Walt Disney World Resort by direct Magic Kingdom bus or boat service, guests will first encounter the new security screening changes at the TTC. A new pair of uncovered tram load/unload stops have been built out in the former median of the TTC tramway for guests parking in the Villains and Heroes lots. Bag checks and metal detectors for screening are now located under the shelters that were formerly the tram stops. All guests heading toward the monorails (Magic Kingdom Express, Resorts, or Epcot) and ferryboat docks at the TTC must now first pass through screening here.

The new TTC tram load/unload area built in the former median of the tramway's turn-around appeared complete in mid-March. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Guests arriving at the TTC from the pathway connected to Disney's Polynesian Village Resort are routed to the new security area at the west (Heroes) end of the new security stations. Guests arriving from the parking lots, the guest drop off area or the non-Disney bus stops located at the TTC are routed to the new security area at the east (Villains) end of the security stations. Of course, at any given time, the stations at one end may not be staffed, and then, we expect, guests will be directed to the other end of the area for screening.

The former Villains parking lot tram stop is now the east end of the new TTC security screening area. The new tram stop is located quite a few steps away from the screening area allowing for the possibility of lines to form here under the Florida sun during peak park entry times. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

The area where guests now walk between the trams and security screening is blocked off from tram traffic by concrete barricades. In time, these barricades likely will be replaced by some sort of more themed or stylized barrier. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Once screened here, guests heading directly by Monorail or Ferryboat to Magic Kingdom will not encounter another security check before entering the park (barring some further enhancement or random screening that Disney Security or law enforcement officers may implement). Guests heading from the TTC to Epcot via monorail, however, will get screened again as they enter that park because, at least for now, guests exiting the ramp from the monorail immediately mix back in with unscreened guests arriving via Epcot parking lot trams and buses. We will keep an eye out for changes in Epcot tram loading and unloading or the installation of new barriers that may indicate further changes at Epcot.

Guests exiting Express and Resort Monorails are now free to cross the Magic Kingdom entry plaza directly. Guests heading for the Resorts Monorail platform from the park exit no longer have to find their way around the rope maze that used to surround this area. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Unlike Magic Kingdom, Epcot security screening stations appeared largely unchanged on April 3, except that the metal detectors are no longer located between the bag check tables as they have been for the past several months. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Guests exiting Epcot toward the parking lot's west side are still (usually) allowed to pass through the security screening area as indicated by the sign (at right in the photo). Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Monorail Resorts

Guests heading to Magic Kingdom from the monorail stations located at Disney's Contemporary Resort, Disney's Polynesian Village Resort, Disney's Grand Floridian Resort (also known as the “Monorail Resorts”) now pass through security screening before boarding the Resorts Monorail. Each of the Monorail Resorts now has its own security screening area just outside the monorail loading area. During peak travel times, guests may encounter lines here that are longer than they are used to for boarding monorails, but the benefit surely comes upon arrival at the park where, like guests arriving via the TTC, guests cross the entry plaza directly for the park's gates rather than get funneled to security screening as in the past.

Disney's Polynesian Village Resort's monorail station now has a security screening station next to the loading area. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Guests heading to the monorail inside Disney's Contemporary Resort go through a screening station next to the escalator or the screening station next to the elevator to the monorail boarding platform. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

A painter covers the remains of the signs that used to point the way to the monorail station at Disney's Contemporary Resort's fourth floor elevator lobby. Because of the installation of the screening station at the escalator to Disney's Contemporary Resort's monorail station, guests may no longer approach the station from the hotel's elevator lobby but, instead, must go around the mural in the Grand Canyon Concourse (as shown by the new arrow on the overhead sign). Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Disney Buses, Boats, and Pedestrians

A huge number of Magic Kingdom visitors arrive on Disney Buses that stop next to the park's main entry plaza. Guests on these buses are now screened under the new tents installed in the large plaza outside the ferryboat dock. As you may recall, the ferryboat dock area was recently redesigned with a new entry and exit toward the park's entry plaza. Since guests arriving via ferry have gone through security screening at TTC, they exit away from the new bus screening area and head toward the park's gates.

Ferryboat passengers exit the dock (on the right in the photo) away from the new tents where arriving bus passengers pass through security screening. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

New screening stations also have been installed for guests arriving at Magic Kingdom by boats from Magic Kingdom area resorts (Disney's Fort Wilderness Campground, Disney's Wilderness Lodge, Disney's Contemporary Resort, Disney's Polynesian Resort, and Disney's Grand Floridian Resort). There is also a new screening tent along the pathway between Disney's Contemporary Resort and Magic Kingdom.

Each of the boat docks for the resort launches now have security checkpoints for arriving guests. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

With the security changes, the main entry plaza for Magic Kingdom is once again a mostly wide-open space. We expect the old security structures likely will be removed, further restoring the area to much the way it appeared before September 11, 2001. The plaza now looks beautiful and crowding here should be reduced. Please let us know if you experience crowding around the new security checkpoints or other issues in the comments or by social media.

New Version of My Disney Experience App Released

On Friday, Disney released the next version of the My Disney Experience App for iOS and Android devices. The new “Version 4.5” represents a major change to the app's design which Disney says “now features the same look and feel as our other park apps, making the mobile experience seamless across the globe.”

The iOS Update Notice mentions that the new version now allows access to “your Disney Resort hotel room number and other handy details.” Screenshot by Alan S. Dalinka.

Like the prior versions of the app, Version 4.5 includes the features that regular visitors (like me) rely upon: park hours, show times, FastPass+ reservations, and Disney PhotoPass photos. For less “regular” visitors, additional useful features carried forward from prior versions include ticket purchasing, dining reservations, turn-by-turn directions and more.

The new version opens to an interactive version of the map of the entire resort. It allows quick access to attractions, restaurants and even restrooms. By tapping on the character icon in the circle at the bottom, a menu pops up that includes the sorts of information and tools users have gotten used to in prior version. Gone, however, is the sidebar menu where many of these menu items used to reside.

Interactive maps are now the initial focus of the app upon launch. Menus are accessed from the character at the bottom (which, for me, is Mickey; for you, it will be whatever character you have linked to your account). Screenshots by Alan S. Dalinka, contents ©Disney and Google.

Disney also says that this version introduces “My Resort Dashboard,” to provide Walt Disney World Resort hotel guests access to “resort reservation details all in one place, including the ability to see room number, theme, building and floor once you have your room assignment.” In addition, “Disney transportation options, a map showing you the location of your room and a link to directly call the Resort Front Desk if you need further assistance during your stay,” can now all be accessed from the app.

Disney posted a brief video highlighting the features of the new version of the My Disney Experience App. Video ©Disney.

Further Increasing the Immersion Quotient For Pandora-The World of Avatar

As the May 27 opening of Disney's Animal Kingdom's new Pandora–The World of Avatar approaches (and its previews coming in the weeks preceding that), Disney continues to direct attention to just how immersive an environment it is creating. Last week, Disney Parks Blog announced the Na'vi translator which will be for sale when Pandora opens.

Na'vi translators will be sold for $19.99 plus tax with a set of 15 translation cards. Image ©Disney.

As the land's mythology goes, the Na'vi are the native people of Pandora. They have no written language. Nevertheless, the translator allows “any human visiting Pandora” to learn how to pronounce 90 Na'vi words using interchangeable translation cards (there are 90 total cards in the collection). 15 cards are included with the translator for $19.99 plus tax, and additional eight randomly selected card packages will be sold for $6.99 plus tax each. The translator lights up at night and includes a clasp that extends up to 12-inches and can be attached to a belt or backpack.

As I noted in an article back in November following the 2016 Disney D23 Destination D: Amazing Adventures presentation on Pandora, Avatar filmmakers James Cameron and Jon Landau along with Disney Imagineer Joe Rohde discussed Pandora as a “real” place. As I wrote, they referred to the film as “a documentary (and that the bad people portrayed in the movie are all gone), and that Disney's Animal Kingdom provides a “gateway” to visiting this far-off planet.”

Avatar creators James Cameron and Jon Landau (as Alpha Centauri Expeditions Founder Marshall Lamm) and Imagineer Joe Rohde share new images and details from the upcoming land Pandora-The World of Avatar. Photo ©Disney.

Since then, the continuing message Disney has been sending is that this new land will represent the foremost in “placemaking,” where even the physics and biology of the land make sense in terms of the story being told. Disney unveiled the VisitPandora.com portal back in February as a sort of “travel” website with “Expeditions” to this newly available place beginning with the park's opening. Last month's Disney Parks Blog “First Look at Menu for Satu'li Canteen” likewise explained the food offerings in context with the overall World of Avatar story.

Given that the film Avatar does not have the large, established, and pre-existing rabid fan base of the Star Wars, Harry Potter, or various comic book franchises, it will be interesting to see whether Pandora develops one that appreciates the depth of what Disney says is being created. Time will tell whether the casual visitor will appreciate Pandora as a “place” on its own (without doing homework into its mythology before visiting), as well as reward those who dive into the storytelling. We sincerely hope that we get to report on new high-quality Disney themed experiences this summer from Pandora.

One Passholder's Tip

This section of the Update provides our MousePlanet readers with the benefit of my years of experience as a longtime Walt Disney World Four Parks Annual Passholder, and lots of personal trial and errors, one (hopefully weekly) tip at a time.

One Passholder's Tip: Week 11
Ponchos: don't visit Walt Disney World without them!

A folded “Emergency” poncho is sold for $1.00 or less at big box stores and dollar stores. It is small enough to fit in a pocket. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

As a regular reader, you had to know this tip was coming eventually. No doubt, you know either first-hand or have read about Central Florida's rainy season. It has not yet started, but as the heat and humidity of summer start to arrive, it is on its way. We actually have (finally) had some rain this week, and rain is starting to show up in more and more daily forecasts.

Now, unlike some parts of the country where rain in the forecast means rain all day, that is seldom the case around Walt Disney World. While it happens, the “normal” is for showers that pop up in the heat of the afternoon or early evening. Showers can last for 20-30 minutes or they can last hours. But the tough part I have learned as a local over these past few years is that the weather forecasts are not as precise here about where the rain will fall as you would think with all the fancy names the local weather reporters use for their forecasting technology and the weather apps. Indeed, I have seen it rain on days that more than one weather app forecast 0% chance of rain, and I have spent days in the Magic Kingdom that were rain-free only to return to a puddle-soaked parking lot and a wet car.

Sure, Disney Parks sell ponchos. They are not cheap in price; the materials are rather heavy and hard to re-fold.

You can also go buy similar ones outside of the parks for less and made to last for years. But I have found that having a $1.00 “Emergency” poncho in my back pocket as I spend my days at Walt Disney World (or, indeed, when I take my neighborhood walks) is a very cheap and unobtrusive bit of weather insurance. If the objective is to not get drenched, the “Emergency” poncho does the trick. It is even possible to re-fold them: with some practice, I have gotten them small enough to go back into a sandwich-size zip-top bag which is a little larger than the one the “Emergency” poncho comes in. Of course, as always, your mileage may vary.

Also, please note: PONCHOS DO NOT PROTECT FROM LIGHTNING! I have seen fellow guests act like they think they do or are otherwise “safe” when wearing them. I grew up and spent most of my life in Chicagoland, so I thought I knew thunderstorms before I moved here. I was wrong! Don't believe me, believe my video from July 3, 2015.

Don't keep it to yourself!

This and That

…Orlando Sentinel reports that Disney Water Parks have begun experimenting with virtual queues sort of like the original version of FastPass used in the Theme Parks. Guests at testing locations received physical plastic cards telling them their ride return times. The experiments (so far) have not been linked to MagicBands or the MyDisneyExperience App. Water park competition ramps up a notch at the end of May when Universal's new Volcano Bay water park opens a few miles up Interstate 4.

…Disney Vacation Club is hosting a Mother's Day brunch, Sunday, May 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Fantasia Ballroom at Disney's Contemporary Resort. For $53.95/person (ages 10 and up) and $29.95/child (ages 3 to 9) plus tax and gratuity, guests will enjoy a dining and entertainment experience inspired by the Disney animated Tarzan and the song “You'll Be in My Heart” from the film. Reservations are required and will open for qualified Members and their guests on Thursday, March 23, by calling Member Services at (800) 800-9800. Additional information is available on this page of the DVC website.

…Limited spaces remain for the Disney Vacation Club event at Markham's at Golden Oak. Markham's is the “casually elegant” restaurant inside Summerhouse, the private clubhouse in the master-planned residential Golden Oak community at Walt Disney World Resort. The “Culinary Magic” event, on April 12 from 5:30-7:30 p.m., plans to feature the music of a string trio, an open bar (for those over 21), and food such as “artisanal cheeses, chilled seafood, a hand-crafted pasta station, a carving station (featuring Black Angus Prime Rib) and a sweet selection of desserts, including Macarons from Amorette's Patisserie and chocolates from The Ganachery.” The price is $130/person (including tax, gratuity and roundtrip resort transportation for Members staying at a DVC Resort if arranged at the time of event registration). Reservations are required and are open to qualified Members and either the number of people sharing their Resort accommodations or a maximum party of six (including the Member) for Members not staying at a resort. Call DVC Member Services, (800)800-9800, for additional information and reservations.

…As we have previously noted, the Disney Vacation Club Moonlight Magic Member Event at Typhoon Lagoon is scheduled for June 23 & 28 and July 5 & 13, 2017. Registration is now open for qualified Members with confirmed on-property hotel reservations (reservation number required for completing the RSVP). Registration opens to all qualified Members on Thursday, April 6 at 9:00 a.m. EDT. Details are available on this page of the DVC website, which includes a link to RSVP and the fine print of which Members are not qualified to participate in Membership Extras like these. We now know that this “Event” will run from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on each scheduled night, with registered Members and their guests able to enter as early as 7:30 p.m.

…As the May 12 debut of the the new “Happily Ever After” fireworks show at Magic Kingdom approaches, Disney continues to roll out additional bits of details and behind the scenes clips. This past week, Disney posted another video about the creation of the show.

The long-running “Wishes” fireworks show will have its final regular presentation on May 11. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Disney posted a “behind the scenes” video about the upcoming “Happily Ever After” fireworks show. Video ©Disney.

…Our sharp-eyed Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix spotted an interesting Disney Auditions notice seeking male look-alike performers to portray Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord from the film, Guardians of the Galaxy, for an upcoming special limited engagement at Walt Disney World. Applicants must be able to begin work “within the next 40 days,” so we expect to see some sort of character appearance around the end of May, though, due to Marvel-related intellectual property rights and contractual issues with Universal Orlando Resort, it may be as low-key and minimally advertised as the Doctor Strange appearances were last year at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

…For fall planning, the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic, returning Friday, October 27, and Saturday, October 28, now has its website, SwanDolphinFoodandWineClassic.com available featuring the 2017 food menu, overnight packages and tickets. Additional information is available on Facebook and reservations can also be booked by phone at (888) 828-8850.

…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. Travel Discounts for Canada Residents

MousePlanet reader Scott S. alerted us to an offer for Canadian residents. Canadian residents receive a 25% discount on 4-day or longer tickets purchased. The discounted rate for a 4-Day adult base ticket is $244.00 USD, compared to $325.00 USD when purchased at the gate. A 10-day adult base ticket is $300 USD, a savings of $100 from the main gate price. Scott S. just alerted us that the offer has been extended to tickets purchased through May 20, 2017.

This offer is only good for Canadian citizens with valid passport, or residents of Canada with valid proof of Canadian residency. The tickets are sold as an exchange certificate, and must be exchanged for park ticket upon arrival. There is no expiration date on the unused tickets, but once activated the tickets must be used within 14 days of first entry.

You can see the full details on the Walt Disney World website. Thanks Scott for the heads up!
