Walt Disney World Resort Update for February 5-11, 2019
Writer's note: If you have not yet had an opportunity, here is another chance to tune in to my chat with Garry Meier discussing my recent media-invited cruise aboard Disney Magic that featured the Marvel Day at Sea, the Mickey Mouse & Minnie Mouse celebrations now underway on both coasts, the Epcot International Festival of the Arts, and more. As always, my segment with Garry is appropriate for all audiences (it starts at 18:55); the remainder of the show may include adult humor and words that may not be appropriate for all ages, listeners or all settings. Champs Go To Disney World
Julian Edelman, named the Most Valuable Player of this weekend's Super Bowl LIII matchup between the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams, was joined by quarterback Tom Brady and Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Chip, and Dale at Magic Kingdom to celebrate on Monday following the Patriots' 13-3 victory on Sunday. Following the win, the sixth in the club's history, the pair were recorded shouting the famous “We're going to Disney World!” response to the question “What are you going to do next?” which, of course, will air nationally in the latest edition of Disney Park's “What's Next?” television commercial tradition. Phil Simms was the first to celebrate a Super Bowl victory in a Disney Park, following his 1987 win; it is the fifth time Patriots players have celebrated a Super Bowl win at Disney Parks.

Brady and Edelman's day at Walt Disney World included a visit to Disney's Hollywood Studios, with a ride aboard the Slinky Dog Dash coaster and a lightsaber duel in front of the future entrance to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge on Grand Avenue. At the Magic Kingdom, they rode a parade float down the parade route from Frontierland, past the Castle and up Main Street U.S.A. lined with many Patriots fans in the park (along with other park guests). Brady conducted a TV interview with Good Morning America's Michael Strahan that is expected to air this morning, while Edelman met with other members of the national and local media.

After recounting his fondess for Disneyland as a child and his visiting Walt Disney World's ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex twenty years ago to play in the Pop Warner Football Championships, Super Bowl LIII MVP Julian Edelman told invited media that Disney “makes you feel like a kid.” Video by Alan S. Dalinka.
During the #DisneyParksLIVE broadcast, Disney Parks Blog released an Orange Bird Digital Wallpaper that you can download for mobile devices or desktop computers.
As we mentioned last week, the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort gets in on the action of that big game by offering the “Champions Package” to residents of the winning team's area; for New England this includes New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. For stays through December 24, 2019 (minimum stay of three nights required), the Champions Package includes $100 meal credit, which can be used at Shula's Steak House (named for NFL's winningest coach, Don Shula) or any other restaurant at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort. It also includes a “one category complimentary room upgrade that does not include suite upgrades.” Guests must have valid state identification at check-in from an eligible state. More information and details of the offer are available at this page of SwanDolphin.com. More information and reservations are available by calling (800)227-1500 and mentioning “CHAMPS.”
Preview Scenes From Dumbo in March
Disney's next “live action” movie retelling of one of its animated film classics is Dumbo, directed by Tim Burton and due in theaters on March 29. In March, guests at Disney's Hollywood Studios can catch a preview of scenes from the new film that also stars Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito and Colin Farrell. The preview will be shown in the Walt Disney Theater inside the Walt Disney Presents attraction.

According to Disney Parks Blog, the new film “expands on the beloved classic story where differences are celebrated, family is cherished and dreams take flight.” Like the animated film, the newborn elephant's oversized ears make him a laughingstock in the circus, but his ability to fly changes his path.
Away from Walt Disney World, the preview will also be presented aboard Disney Cruise Line and at Disneyland in the Main Street Opera House in Town Square.

Epcot Concerts News & Calendar
The Disney on Broadway Concert Series brings rotating pairs of performers to the America Gardens Theatre for three concerts each night during the Epcot International Festival of the Arts. On the final night of the Festival only, February 25, two pairs of performers—Ashley Brown & Josh Strickland and Kissy Simmons & Alton Fitzgerald White—will join together for the final three concerts. Dining packages are available for all performances at ArtfulEpcot.com or by calling (407) WDW-DINE. Passholders and eligible Disney Vacation Club Members can receive a 10% discount for dining packages throughout the Festival during lunch and dinner (excludes alcohol, tax and gratuity).

Also expanded to seven days a week, beginning on March 6, the Garden Rocks Concert Series takes the stage three times nightly through June 3. Almost all of the performers have been announced. Those announced this past week include Tony Orlando, Jon Anderson of YES, Ambrosia, Magic Giant and Dennis DeYoung, original member of STYX. Other recent additions included Steve Auger (Journey former lead vocalist), Air Supply, Rick Springfield, Richard Marx and Starship, starring Mickey Thomas. Other returning performers include The Spinners and Herman's Hermits starring Peter Noone, and new to the Festival performers include TobyMac, Steven Curtis Chapman, Sister Sledge, and Colin Hay of Men at Work. For more information or reservations, call (407) WDW-DINE or visit FreshEpcot.com.
This summer, Guardians of the Galaxy-Awesome Mix Live! will return from June 14 through August 18. Star-Lord and Gamora (along with an “alien” band) will take a “musical journey” that showcases hits from Star-Lord's Awesome Mix tapes with multiple performances daily.
For the convenience of our readers, all of the scheduled Disney on Broadway Concert Series performances at America Gardens Theatre are shown in our Google Calendar of Epcot Events. The performers announced so far for the Garden Rocks Concert Series that follows later this year have also been added to the calendar and the Guardians of the Galaxy-Awesome Mix Live! dates are included as well. While our Google Calendar of Epcot Events includes a list of the scheduled performers, it is always best to check the My Disney Experience app, Times Guide, and, yes, sometimes even signs posted at the park entrances and at the theater noting last minute changes. You can add the whole Event calendar to any calendar that supports the iCal format (like iPhone and Mac) by copying this link and, indeed, if when we get additional information and update the calendar, the calendar will update on your subscribed device as well. The calendar is provided as a courtesy “as is, where is” without any guarantees. Given the effort it took to create it and keep it updated, we do respectfully request that you do not post our entire calendar on another site without first asking our permission. Walt Disney World Resort does provide schedules in the My Disney Experience app, but does not allow you to add dates to calendars outside the app itself.

This and That…
…Disney Parks Blog announced that Mobile Order in the My Disney Experience App will soon receive an update providing “easier navigation and improved design with fun, colorful icons and even more photos of the menu items.” The update has already rolled out to the Disneyland App version of Mobile Order and, if you have used it, we would love to see your comments below. For those that have not used Mobile Order, it allows guests to place and pay for dining and beverage orders in advance and thereby skip the line at many quick service locations around Wald Disney World Resort, including using dining package credits (but not including gift cards). Guests who have special dietary needs usually have to continue to wait in line to order rather than use the app, but the update promises to provide “guests with certain allergies or dietary restrictions” the ability to “better discover the options that may meet their needs at participating locations.”
…For Walt Disney World Resort passholders, do you keep an eye out on your email for notices of V.I.Passholder Events? This week, some categories of Passholders got notice of an opportunity to attend “an evening of Theme Park magic” either at Magic Kingdom on Tuesday, February 26, from 10 p.m. until 12 a.m. (including more than 25 attractions and character greetings), or Epcot on Thursday, March 21, from 9 p.m. until 11 p.m. (including some of the Flower & Garden Festival marketplaces, attractions and character greetings). Registration closed for these events quickly and was only open to Gold-and-above passholders. For those looking for shopping events for V.I.Passholders, be sure to follow Disney Parks Blog on Twitter—pop-up events (that often do not require registration) are starting to occur more frequently and can do so before we publish our weekly Updates.
…Those who pay attention to the attraction refurbishment schedules in the parks may have noted that Peter Pan's Flight has recently emerged from its short refurbishment. This week, probably coincidentally, Disney Parks Blog announced that Disney PhotoPass Servie now has a new Magic Shot featuring Peter Pan flying high above head available in front of the train station just inside Magic Kingdom's gates. Indeed, it is also now available in a similar spot at Disneyland too. Be sure to ask your PhotoPass photographer about what magic shots are available.
…Disney Skyliner gondola transportation system testing has begun ahead of its expected opening this Fall. The new system connecting several resorts and both Epcot and Disney's Hollywood Studios will feature gondola cabins saluting Disney attractions and characters. Disney Parks Blog says that the animated films represented will include Beauty & the Beast, Frozen, Lilo & Stitch, Moana, Peter Pan, The Princess and the Frog, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Zootopia. The post shows concept art for gondolas featuring Toy Story, Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy characters, plus Daisy and Donald Duck. The posts also lists additional cabins themed for: Coco, Goofy, Pete, Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow, Finding Dory, The Haunted Mansion, Monsters, Inc., Pirates of the Caribbean and Ratatouille.

…The runDisney Virtual Series returns this summer and is celebrating 80 Years of Marvel. The 4th annual edition of the series allows “runners” to sign up for up to three Marvel-themed 5Ks – Captain Marvel (June), Iron Man (July), and Black Panther (August). “Runners” can choose how to complete their 5K – run or walk, around a neighborhood or any other course, or even on a treadmill. Participants that sign up receive a digital race bib, and finisher certificate; complete the all three races challenge and earn a special commemorative item. Registration opens on May 7 at 10 a.m. Eastern. Visit runDisney.com for more information on the Virtual Series and its slate of 2019 races at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Paris.
…For those looking for more morsels of details about the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge lands coming to Disneyland this summer and Disney's Hollywood Studios late this fall, StarWars.com announced several new publications tied in to that far, far away galaxy. Coming up first is a Marvel Comics series. Very little detail beyond titles have been released, and Orlando Sentinel recaps the titles and release dates. Of course, somewhere among the summer and fall dates, the new land will debut in Anaheim.
…Supporters of Give Kids The World Village will go “Over the Edge” later this week, rappelling 428 feet down the side of the 32-story Hyatt Regency Orlando on International Drive. The event, limited to 76 participants, is the organization's “most extreme fundraiser ever.” Rappelers must raise $1,000 to participate, and, last we heard, a few slots were still open – you can learn more and even support an edger by visiting gktw.org/overtheedge. Last year, the event raised $115,000 toward the organization's mission of providing dream vacations to critically ill children and their families. Give Kids The World is a non profit resort in Central Florida.
…Speaking of Give Kids The World Village, its next speaker series event will be An Evening with Ron Logan on February 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Give Kids The World Village Resort, 210 S. Bass Rd., Kissimmee, FL 34746. Ron Logan was Executive Vice President and Executive Producer for Walt Disney Entertainment, responsible for creating, casting, and producing live entertainment for Disney Parks worldwide and was the first President of Disney Theatrical Productions (which produced Disney's Beauty and the Beast-A New Musical on Broadway and around the world.). Tickets are available on this EventBrite page starting at $35 (plus fees). GKTW has again given us the opportunity to give some tickets away to our readers. Watch for details on our Instagram Story on Friday, February 8, 2019 – complete details will follow, but you must be a follower of @MousePlanet on Instagram.
…The MousePlanet Newsletter is here! The newsletter contains a recap of the week's articles (in case you miss a day), news that may have developed since the weekly Updates were published, and tips about what's happening at the Disney theme parks for the coming weekend. We'll also include a fun bonus, such as an Eye Spy or a trivia question. To subscribe to our free newsletter, just enter your email in the box below.

Jaleo & Pepe by José Andrés
Chef José Andrés' ThinkFoodGroup announced that it will open its first-ever “brick-and-mortar location” of its Spanish food truck grab-and-go concept restaurant Pepe by José Andrés adjoining its soon-to-open Jaleo restaurant at Disney Springs this winter. Pepe will feature hot and cold Spanish-style sandwiches including bocatas and bikinis, salads, soups and sides along with Spanish sangria. The space will be decorated with an elaborate mural by Marc Jesús, a famous Menorcan painter, featuring his “ever-happy, blue-skinned female characters.”

Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill
NEW On a personal note, I finally had a chance to try the new restaurant located near the Coca-Cola Store, Chicken Guy and Planet Hollywood Observatory. My visit was with friends and was not a hosted/invited media event. As I frequently write here, I leave the true reviews to other writers here at MousePlanet. For what it is worth: I enjoyed the food and atmosphere; the restaurant's price-point is similarly high to the other new table service restaurants at Disney Springs. The location currently offers a cast member discount; Passholders currently receive complimentary gelato with the purchase of an entree.

The signature Salumi e Formaggi platter is made to order and features a selection of imported cured meats and aged cheeses for sharing. For reservations visit EnzosHideawayFL.com.
Morimoto Asia
Starting today, February 5, you can join in the celebration of the Chinese New Year as Chinese culture celebrates the year of the pig. Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto's Sticky Spare Ribs are first braised, then dunked in cornstarch and flash-fried for a crispy crust, and then are doused in hoisin sweet-and-sour sauce; at his pan-Asian Disney Springs restaurant, that is but one of several signature pork dishes on the menu. The restaurant shared its recipe with us and it is posted here on MousePad.
You can dine on Valentine's Day under the “sky-high chandeliers” in Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto's first Pan-Asian restaurant. For reservations visit MorimotoAsiaFLA.com.
Status of Parking Availability at Disney Springs
Those who visit Disney Springs during the weekends or during busy times of the year at the Resort know that the two parking structures often fill to capacity during those peak times. Even the flat lot on the West Side can fill up during very busy times! Construction continues across Buena Vista Drive at the site of the new garage that will connect to Disney Springs by a series of pedestrian bridges. We have not yet heard when the new structure will be open, but the trend of the name discussion for it has shifted from “Lemon” to “Grapefruit,” and you can keep an eye on the overhead signs along Buena Vista Drive directing cars to the garages and lots with availability.
At the existing garages, there is still on-going work underway to upgrade the electronic system that indicates parking space availability. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.

Current Discounts and Promotions
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Walt Disney World Resort Update. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the intended audience. Check out the category that best matches you, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers.
Walt Disney World Resort theme park tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Florida or eligible for U.S. Military Personnel benefits. It is increasingly true that non-Florida residents tend to benefit the most by purchasing tickets in advance (and, of course, being mindful of the rules relevant to those tickets). As prices go up, it becomes even more important to pay heed: Don't get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside Disney property stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Walt Disney World Theme Park admissions, and may result in denial of entry. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or a travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Be sure to move the calendar to at least seven (7) days out, to see what ticket options and discounts are available for your planned visit.
