Walt Disney World Resort Hosted 2017 Pro Bowl Week Activities
This past Sunday, Orlando hosted the 2017 NFL Pro Bowl at Camping World Stadium (formerly known as the Citrus Bowl) in which the AFC defeated the NFC, 20-13. The game was shown live on ESPN and ESPN Deportes, subsidiaries of The Walt Disney Company.
Central Florida civic leaders would very much like Orlando to become the annual event's permanent home for the additional tourism it brings. It should come as no surprise that, particularly recognizing that you did not come here to read sports news, the NFL Pro Bowl carries with it a bunch of ancillary activities, including many that took place during “Pro Bowl Week” at Walt Disney World Resort, from January 25-28. As with many new experiences offered around the Resort, there were not always perfectly clear ways of finding the events around the property (lack of signs directing guests from parking lots, cast members that were not fully informed, and the like). Should the events return in the future, these issues likely will be resolved and the experiences further enhanced.
2017 NFL Pro Bowl Experience
The center of Pro Bowl Week activities at Walt Disney World was the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex, which was open to the public for free on Wednesday through Saturday while hosting the 2017 NFL Pro Bowl Experience and its football-related, family-friendly activities. Several interactive areas for kids and families to play football-related games were available, as well as the Epcot and ESPN Grill food trucks. There were viewing areas for Pro Bowl team practices and games played by Special Olympics Flag Football and USA Football's Women's World Football teams.
Disney Springs Pro Bowl Bash and More
Disney Springs hosted several activities during Pro Bowl Week, including a Bash featuring dancing, live radio broadcasts, NFL cheerleaders, and team mascots. Pro Bowl banners were flying throughout the “neighborhoods” of Disney Springs too.

Pro Bowl Parade at Magic Kingdom
On Friday, Magic Kingdom hosted several NFL Pro Bowl players, along with Mickey and several of his “pals;” cheerleaders; and families from Make-A-Wish Central and Northern Florida and the Tragedy Assistance Program. Denver Broncos receivers Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders; Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen; Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier; and Tennessee Titans tight end Delanie Walker rode with Football Mickey in the first parade vehicle.

“Re-Imagined” Planet Hollywood Observatory Is Now Open at Disney Springs
While it had been expected to open for some time, Planet Hollywood Observatory had a sort of surprise opening on Friday afternoon after its long re-imagining and transformation. With a tweet from the Disney Parks Blog announcing its opening just after the Magic Kingdom's Pro Bowl Parade concluded, I (along with a lot of the local press corps) headed over to see and sample the new restaurant. Since all new restaurants deserve a break-in period, in this Update, we will provide a “report” on what you can find there and not a “review” (and you should read no judgement in that whatsoever, positive or negative).
Planet Hollywood Observatory is now a four-story stargazing observatory with new spaces including an outdoor dining terrace, a new menu, and new look and feel. Each floor has been designed to provide a different ambience and collection of film-making memorabilia. The focus of the space is a 4,500-square-foot video wall that uses “trompe l'oeil 3D technology” to simulate images in three dimensions.
Classic Planet Hollywood dishes remain on the new menu, along with a selection of newly created “over-the-top burgers and sandwiches” by celebrity Chef Guy Fieri. Desserts are giant-sized too, like the hand-dipped milkshakes and sweets made for sharing. Beer, wine, and cocktails are offered table-side as well as at bars located on each floor; the new outdoor Stargazers Lounge (which had not yet opened at the time of my visit on Friday) has a beverage menu that focuses on Florida craft beers (with 20 on tap) and 10 signature cocktails.

The restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner. The gift shop is located on the first level and may be entered by the doors facing The Coca-Cola Store.
Paddlefish Opens February 4
Levy Restaurants, the long-time operator of Fulton's Crab House at what is now Disney Springs, announced that the new Paddlefish restaurant is finally ready to open this Saturday, February 4. The former Fulton’s Crab House location has undergone an extensive, multimillion-dollar transformation of the restaurant's interior and exterior. Levy Restaurants says that “the aesthetic of Paddlefish was inspired by a modern, seafaring yacht,” and includes, “booths that are put into spaces with great views and a bar that overlooks the paddlewheel. Unique design features include opening up all of the windows for an open-air feel and bar areas decorated with brass accents that resemble fish gills.”
Paddlefish’s menu will showcase fresh seafood, including some dishes from the prior Fulton's menu like lobster corn dogs and crab legs. Unique beverage offerings inspired by classic, turn-of-the-century American cocktails will also be available. There will be three unique dining room experiences on the “ship” which can seat a total of 760 guests: the main dining room, the “Boil Room,” and the rooftop deck.

MousePlanet's Donald and Bonnie Fink will bring us full coverage of the new Paddlefish soon after its opening.
Views Around the World
Several more days of trying out the new Express Transportation with experiences similar to those I reported on last week, yielded visits to the Epcot International Festival of the Arts (which continues on Fridays through Mondays through February 20th), Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Magic Kingdom this week. Since the Pro Bowl Experience also allowed me my first opportunity to visit the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex—and I went over to Disney Springs to see a few of the other Pro Bowl activities there—I have more photos from those locations as well. As you scroll through, you will have ample opportunities to see construction cranes over Disney's Hollywood Studios from multiple locations inside and outside that park.

One Passholder's Tip
As I introduced last week, this section of the Update provides our MousePlanet readers with the benefit of my years of experience as a longtime Walt Disney World Four Parks Annual Passholder, and lots of personal trial and errors, one (hopefully weekly) tip at a time.
One Passholder's Tip: Week 2
Be prepared to recharge your electronics!
While the batteries that power our electronic devices tend to do so for a greater part of a day than they used to (and I remember lugging camcorders and extra batteries around both Disneyland and Walt Disney World as far back as 1996), the odds are good that one or more of your devices will need to be recharged during your visit to Walt Disney World. Finding the right battery, charger or cable at or near Walt Disney World is not a certainty. There are more options for additional power than ever—including vending machines that sell or rent portable USB-chargers—and there are more recharging stations in the Parks and Resorts than ever before.
However, none of that means that the recharging station (or even the rental batteries) will have what you need to connect to your device. Ensure you do not run out of power for your device of choice—whether it be your smartphone or a camera—by remembering to bring what you need when you leave home. If you plan to recharge in the Parks, make sure you bring your spare batteries with you and that particular cable that connects from your device to a USB or wall outlet. If you bring your recharger with you, Guest Relations in the park may even be able to recharge your device while you shop or enjoy some rides and shows.
Don't keep it to yourself!

This and That
…MousePlanet extends its condolences upon the passing of actress Mary Tyler Moore last week.
Mary Tyler Moore, Rest in Peace. Photo by Alan S. Dalinka.
…As I personally experienced this past week at Disney's Hollywood Studios, Star Tours: The Adventure Continues is once again a fully randomized adventure where you are no longer guaranteed a visit to any particular worlds or to see BB-8.
…At long last, we know the final date DisneyQuest, the indoor interactive “theme park” and video arcade, will be open: July 3, 2017. The Disney Parks Blog announced that DisneyQuest will close to make way for The NBA Experience at Walt Disney World, “a one-of-a-kind basketball-themed experience featuring hands-on activities that put guests of all ages right in the middle of NBA game action.” No opening date for the new venue has been announced, but it is expected to include video productions, interactive experiences, a restaurant and a retail store.
…An eight-minute sneak preview of the upcoming live-action Beauty and the Beast film will be shown in the Walt Disney Theater at One Man's Dream in Disney's Hollywood Studios starting February 10. A collection of props and costumes from the film's production will also be on display during the preview's run. The film is set to debut in the U.S. on March 17, 2017.
…If you are planning to shop at Disney Springs with a large budget and desire personalized fashion and beauty advice plus “special access” to the retailers, for an additional $250 per hour, Personal Shopping Sessions are now available according to Disney Parks Blog. For “Disney Springs Style Session” appointments (booked on a first come, first-served basis during normal Disney Springs operating hours), visit melaniepace.com or call (321) 377-1337.
…Disney Parks Moms Panel unveiled its 2017 Awards in a variety of categories at Walt Disney World:
- Favorite Character Meet & Greet: Epcot Character Spot
- Favorite Snack: Dole Whips
- Favorite Show: Festival of the Lion King
You can read the full list and runners up on the Disney Parks Blog.
…Beyond Walt Disney World, but within eyesight: The Orlando Eye observation wheel is closed for scheduled maintenance until February 9th. Other attractions at the base of the wheel are expected to remain open.
…Also in that same general vicinity: Universal Orlando announced that its new Water Park, Volcano Bay, will open on Thursday, May 25, just in time for Memorial Day weekend. What that means in terms of Disney's plans for the “Summer” opening of Pandora-The World of AVATAR at Animal Kingdom, we will not speculate yet other than to note the unlikeliness of both openings having press conferences at the same time or in the same news cycle.
…Elsewhere, Disney Cruise Line's Disney Wonder ship just completed a major enhancement project and has debuted a new stage show, “Frozen: A Musical Spectacular.” We expect to share more details soon.
…And, finally, Orlando Business Journal reported on a new patent filed by Disney titled “Sensing and Managing Vehicle Behavior Based on Occupant Awareness” which involves a method for a ride system that, among other things, reads rider facial expressions or a wearable ID device (like Disney's MagicBands) with pre-set interests to customize ride experiences such as altering the speed of the ride vehicle and its path accordingly. It took me quite a few searches in the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) databases to find it, but if you are really curious about the scope of the U.S. Patent Application No. 14/804451 filed July 21, 2015, published January 26, 2017, or just want to see the included patent drawings which include a depiction of a ride vehicle going through a scene with skeletons, you too can find it here. Be aware that patent applications go through a process called “examination” by the USPTO, and they do not necessarily ever result in an issued patent, let alone any specific product, service, technique, feature, or such. Nevertheless, for Disney Parks fans, it is interesting to see what Disney Imagineering may be dreaming about.
