Writer's note: Not surprisingly, there is very little news to report around Walt Disney World Resort following last week's Fourth of July celebrations and ahead of all the big news we all expect to come from Disney's 2017 D23 Expo this Friday through Sunday in Anaheim, California. The 2017 D23 Expo kicks off this Friday at the Anaheim Convention Center, with three jam-packed days of panels, presentations, celebrity appearances, shopping opportunities, and more. News and Views

It Is Time To Plan for New Year's Eve

With less than six months until New Year's Eve, reservations open today (July 11), for three ways to celebrate the start of 2018 at Disney's Contemporary Resort. The events are offered under the larger umbrella name, Enchanting Extras Collection, which is the catch-all Disney uses to describe many of the up-charge opportunities that it calls “can't miss experiences that enhance the Walt Disney World Experience.” For reservations and more information (like pricing, which was not available at the time this was written), call (407) WDW-DINE.

►Disney Countdown to Midnight

This 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. event in the Fantasia Ballroom is for guests 18 and over. It includes dining, live music, drinks and more. Mickey and Minnie are expected to appear and the evening's entertainment includes an “interactive band” and a DJ. Partygoers will be able to view Magic Kingdom's New Year's Eve fireworks.

►Pixar Party: A New Year's Eve Celebration

This 8 p.m. to 12:15 a.m. event features a buffet style dinner where Sarge welcomes guests to the Ballroom of the Americas featuring vignettes of Pixar movies including Andy's Room from Toy Story, Metro City from The Incredibles and more characters from those films, Cars, and Up. There are lots of scheduled kids' activities, plus a Radio Disney DJ in a Cars-inspired rig from Radiator Springs. As midnight approaches, guests will go outdoors to view Magic Kingdom's fireworks.

►Down in New Orleans: A Disney New Year's Dining Experience

This 7 p.m. to 12:15 a.m. “fine dining” event inspired by the Disney animated film The Princess and the Frog will be held in the Grand Republic Ballroom decorated in French Quarter style. A “N'awlins” jazz band entertains during dinner and a singer will join later in the evening to sing classics from the film. The evening's menu includes the flavors of the “Big Easy” and guests will enjoy a private outdoor area for viewing the Magic Kingdom fireworks at midnight.

Stormwater Permits Point to Changes at Epcot's Universe of Energy

Although Walt Disney World Resort is slow to turn rumors into news (often saving the “news” for blockbuster events like the upcoming D23 Expo) its permit filings often shed light on changes coming to the Resort. We have previously addressed some of these rumors that cross into fact-based-news with respect to permits for the area surrounding the France pavilion that may become home of a new attraction, and to the gondola-type skyway transportation system that appears to be slated to connect Epcot with DIsney's Hollywood Studios and some of the nearby Resorts.

Well, as any visitor to Central Florida in summertime knows (and as any regular reader of these Updates ought to be aware), it can rain a lot in a short period of time around Walt Disney World, and that stormwater needs to be routed somewhere so that guests can continue to enjoy the attractions and resorts. Thus, the first place folks look for signs of changes to the parks and resorts are the publicly filed stormwater permits.

The most recent set of permits of interest are those that call for construction changes that apparently began last week backstage at Epcot and are scheduled to run until January 2021. The area covered surrounds the Universe of Energy. Rumors have circulated for quite awhile that a “Guardians of the Galaxy” themed attraction is slated to replace Ellen's Energy Adventure on the site, but the permits shed no light on anything other than changes to the canals and backstage foliage. The 2021 completion date in the permit documentation is interesting because Walt Disney World will reach the 50th anniversary of its opening that year. It is possible that 2017 D23 Expo will reveal some of the Resort's plans for celebrating its 50th Anniversary, but it is more likely that those big announcements will be made at D23 Expo in 2019. Stay tuned.

Cirque du Soleil Buys Blue Man Group

Cirque du Soleil, the Montreal, Canada-based company that produces the La Nouba show which is scheduled to close at the end of the year in the theater at Disney Springs West Side made some news this week. It purchased Blue Man Group, the theatrical company that produces shows in several cities, including one just a little ways up Interstate 4 in CityWalk at Universal Orlando Resort.

Orlando Sentinel reports that the purchase price was in the “tens of millions” and that there is no further word on what will be the next production to take up residence in La Nouba's theater, but Cirque is “optimistic” that there will be “an announcement in the coming weeks.” Cirque says that it plans to maintain the separate identity of the shows.

Thanks to GPS and the 40x optical zoom of my camera, I was well-positioned at Epcot to watch SpaceX launch a Falcon 9 rocket over fifty miles away at Kennedy Space Center from Launch Pad 39A. One Passholder's Tip

This section of the Update provides our MousePlanet readers with the benefit of my years of experience as a longtime Walt Disney World Four Parks Annual Passholder, and lots of personal trial and errors, one (hopefully weekly) tip at a time.

One Passholder's Tip: Week 23
Notice the details, even when they are wrong!

I think it is axiomatic to say that there is more to the Parks of Walt Disney World than just the rides. Well, I recognize that not every park-goer feels that way, but for those of us that visit often, one of the joys of Disney Parks is exploring the little, less often discussed details. Younger guests (and those young at heart) love looking for the so-called “Hidden Mickeys” around the Parks. There are lots of them of varying level of “official” acknowledgement and, indeed, some even the subject of debate.

Also in the little details department are the museum-type installations scattered around the World Showcase pavilions relating to the countries they represent. Some are “hidden in plain sight” like those in the entry area of the Mexico pavilion that I have seen people run full-speed past as their eyes adjust from the daylight to the dark interior of the pavilion. Others are a little off the beaten track, like the inside of the Stave Church at Norway, or the inconspicuously marked doors to the left of the fountain in the courtyard of the Morocco pavilion. The details in these places provide further context to the larger attractions they support. For example, when the Norway pavilion's ride became “Frozen Ever After,” the display inside the Stave Church was updated to show some of the cultural foundations for the clothing shown on the characters in the film.

But, perhaps, like many (all?) presentations of history, mistakes sometimes can creep in. The display cases in the pre-show hall for “Impressions de France” is a great example of that. The displays focus on the history and art of Notre Dame Cathedral which appears in the attraction's film and is a landmark in Paris.

Years ago, I was browsing the displays and noticed a word that I did not recognize in one of them: “mistock.” I am pretty sure I first noticed it before 2007's introduction of the iPhone because in the years since then, I would have just taken my iPhone out and looked up the word (like you should if you do not know “axiomatic” in the first paragraph of this Tip). Sometime after that visit, I did look it up to confirm it was not a word, and I informed Walt Disney World Guest Communications of the error. A cast member even called me to apologize in response. But, years later (including this week), it remains. It has become one of my favorite details at Walt Disney World since, at least to me, it underscores that we all make mistakes.

Museum-type displays can be found in pavilions around the World Showcase and often have interesting details. Go and have a look for yourself. It is possible that this detail will disappear one day (and if some of the rumors about the France pavilion turn out true, that day could be sooner rather than later). Then again, someone at Disney who reads this may finally get it changed more quickly than my comments to Guest Communications have. Mileage varies with experience.

This and That

…Through tomorrow, Wednesday, July 12, at 6 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, you can bid on a Walt Disney World Resort vacation visit to Pandora–The World of Avatar, in the ESPY Day Auction to benefit the V Foundation for Cancer Research. The winning bidder receives access to all four theme parks, the two water parks, air and ground transportation, lodging, VIP Tour Services, character dining, a private character meet and greet, and more in addition to benefiting V Foundation for Cancer Research. As of 10 p.m. Eastern on Monday, the current bid was $13,000.00. The estimated retail value of the vacation package is $13,436.00; vacation must be taken between 8/1/2017 and 8/31/2018. …Changes are coming to Disney's Yacht Club Resort dining options. Set to open later this month, “The Market at Ale & Compass” will offer a small merchandise area along with 28 casual dining seats for both made-to-order and grab 'n go meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In October, the Ale & Compass lobby lounge expands to 58 seats and will offer a new menu of cocktails and light bites. The adjacent Captain's Grille will become the Ale & Compass Restaurant with a “gastropub ambience with New England-inspired comfort food” serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the Disney Dining Plan. …Walt Disney World Resort has begun to build a memorial for Lane Graves, the boy killed by an alligator near Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa over a year ago. Central Florida's local ABC-TV affiliate WFTV-9 flew its helicopter over where it says that construction is underway “on the left side of the beach” near where the tragedy occurred. WFTV's report marking the one year anniversary of the incident a few weeks ago is here.

…Speaking of WFTV, its evening newscast last night included the widely-circulated rumor that the Tron Lightcycle Roller Coaster from Shanghai Disneyland is going to replace the Tomorrowland Speedway in Magic Kingdom. While Sunday was the 35th anniversary of the film's release, and while we have teased this rumor before in prior Views Around the World, unfortunately, WFTV's only cited source for this “news” was another fan site. There is still no official confirmation from Disney and there is no telling whether we will hear any at D23 Expo or otherwise.

…If you always wanted your own Disney Parks stick figure family, you can get a free printed decal by visiting the new BuildYourDisneyFamily.com site from Disney. Anyone can build the stick figures, but the free decal is available only to United States residents.

…For many golfers (at least those I know), one of the most important parts of the “game” is the beverage cart. Well, for those playing the Walt Disney World Resort's courses, Disney Golf now has rolled out character themed refreshment carts. Mickey, Minnie and Goofy “inspired” carts are at the Palm, Magnolia, and Oak Trail courses. A Mickey “inspired” cart is at the Lake Buena Vista course. Have a look over on Disney Parks Blog.

For foodies heading to Walt Disney World Resort and the greater Orlando area from August 25 to October 1, Visit Orlando's Magical Dining Month event's three-course prix-fixe $35/person meal menus are now available on VisitOrlando.com/MagicalDining. Around Walt Disney World Resort and Lake Buena Vista specifically, there are quite a few participating restaurants at Disney Springs and at Disney's and neighboring Resorts; see the Disney-area filtered list here. According to Orlando Sentinel a dollar from each meal will benefit two designated nonprofit organizations: Freedom Ride, an organization that provides therapeutic horse rides for disabled children and adults; and BASE Camp Children's Cancer Foundation, that provides support and programs for children and families living with cancer and other life-threatening hematological illnesses.

• Wishes: A Magical Gathering of Disney Dreams – had its final showing on May 11, 2017, and has been replaced by the new fireworks show: Happily Ever After.
• The Incredibles Super Dance Party – closed. The Rockettower Plaza Stage now hosts “The Cosmic Dance Party.”
• Stitch's Great Escape – often closed on a “seasonal” basis. As of this posting, it is again open for the peak Summer season.

• Disney Quest – Closed as of July 3, 2017, to make way for The NBA Experience.
• La Nouba by Cirque du Soleil – ends its run on December 31, 2017. Next use of the theater on the West Side TBA.
• Wolfgang Puck Grand Café – closes its West Side location on August 1, 2017. A new Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill has been announced for Town Center and is expected to open in 2018.

Resorts

• Caribbean Beach – Centertown, the resort's marketplace, will be expanded with new waterfront dining and retail shopping areas. The project is expected to be completed 2019-20. Due to the work, the following food service and retail locations are closed:
  • Old Port Royale Food Court
  • Shutters at Old Port Royale
  • Banana Cabana Pool Bar
  • Calypso Trading Post
• Coronado Springs – A new 15-story tower overlooking Lago Dorado, the resort's central lake, will add 500 rooms featuring suites and concierge level services, and a rooftop dining facility that will include panoramic views of nighttime fireworks shows at the Theme Parks. Construction around some of the bus stops started earlier this month. The resort also plans to refurbish current resort rooms and transform some of its landscape. The project is expected to be completed 2019-20.
• Wilderness Lodge and Villas – Hidden Springs pool, resort beach, and playground closed. The grand opening of Disney Vacation Club's Copper Copper Creek Villas & Cabins at Disney's Wilderness Lodge is set for July 17. The Boulder Ridge Cove pool has opened replacing the former Hidden Springs pool. Additional amenities have begun opening ahead of the debut of the Copper Creek additions.
