Walt Disney World Resort Update for June 6–12, 2017

Writer's note: Just a few weeks ago, I wrote in this Update about the increasingly severe drought conditions in the Central Florida region, including around the Walt Disney World Resort. Just a handful of weeks before that, I was sharing pictures in a week's Views Around the World of one of the area wildfires visible from around the Resort, including from atop Expedition Everest at Disney's Animal Kingdom.
We started getting hints of change on the day of the formal dedication of Pandora–The World of Avatar, May 24, when (seemingly timed by Disney to the minute) it rained in the late afternoon after the daytime events concluded and during dinner (which was moved indoors), but then completely ended in time for the nighttime celebration at the Tree of Life and our first nighttime look at the new land. Then last week, as the local weather forecasters say, the usual day for the rainy season arrived, and the Central Florida so-called “liquid sunshine” has been back in abundance with more forecast this week.
Fortunately, rain rarely lasts all day on any particular day in Central Florida at this time of year. I made it to the parks and Disney Springs on five separate days since the last Update and, at most, got just a few drops of rain on me by timing my days right (and some luck). You will see no clear skies in this week's photos and very few photos of blue sky. The volume of rain has not yet cured the deficit the drought caused, but it is rapidly being wiped out in most parts of the region.
Hopefully, you will not be surprised when I tell you that there really is little major news this week around Walt Disney World Resort following Memorial Day. Pandora crowds continue with long waits to ride the new attractions and, from time to time, just to enter the land itself. The new Magic Kingdom “Happily Ever After” fireworks continues to be a major draw inside that park. At Disney's Hollywood Studios, the wonderful new Music of Pixar Live! concerts featuring a full orchestra plus beloved characters seem well-attended, and the new Disney Movie Magic projection show continues to be a surprising delight.
So, after a couple of quick news items, we will jump right to a combined Views around the World/This and That section before we get to that One Passholder's Tip that I promised last time. As is often the case when I write for MousePlanet, some of the news details are in the captions. Details Announced About Future Disney Springs Dining Additions
Disney Springs continues to expand the number of dining options at Walt Disney World Resort. This week, Disney announced two more new “dining concepts” in addition to three previously announced locations that have yet to debut.
On the West Side, Jaleo, a location by Chef Jose Andres' ThinkFood Group, is expected to open in 2018 with a tapas menu featuring traditional and contemporary Spanish cuisine. This is the group's first location in Florida, joining five other locations in the United States and Mexico City. The specific location has not been announced, but the multi-floor restaurant will be designed by Spanish designer Juli Capella featuring “theatrical decor representing the colorful culture of Spain.”
In Town Center, a new Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill “inspired by traditional farmhouses with a touch of elegance” is also expected in 2018. In a space designed by tonychi, the restaurant is intended to evoke “the essence of laid-back California dining made popular by Puck at Spago” in Los Angeles. The menu will include Puck's signature dishes with Mediterranean influences and comfort food.
As we have previously reported, Levy Restaurants' Portobello Country Italian Trattoria closed earlier this spring and is scheduled to be replaced this fall by a new Levy Restaurant by Chef Tony Mantuano inspired by his “adventures in Italy.”
Construction on The Edison, occupying some of the footprint of the former Adventurers Club, is also expected to open later this year. It is a collaboration of Patina Restaurant Group and Kinetescape's Andrew Meieran that will offer classic American food, cocktails, and live entertainment inspired by a sister location in Los Angeles. Themed to a 1920s-era electric company, the entertainment is expected to include contortionists, aerialists, DJs, and more.
Finally, as we have previously reported, Wine Bar George by Master Sommelier George Miliotes is expected to open before the end of 2017 as well. The location's wine list will boast more than 100 selections “by the bottle and glass in a range of varietals, vintages and prices” along with shareable small plates.
Summertime Express Transportation Option for Passholders
For annual passholders at tiers that are not blocked out between June 5 and August 10, the new Express Transportation (direct inside-the-park-to-inside-another-park) bus service is offering a “Summer Pass” for $59. Summer Pass will only be available for purchase on a limited-time basis and, of course, your annual passes must be valid for admission to all four Walt Disney World theme parks on all applicable dates between June 5 and August 10, 2017. Purchased Express Transportation Summer Passes are added to your MagicBand and/or Annual Pass Card and are non-transferable.
All guests with valid Park Hopper Option tickets can still purchase and use Express Transportation at the existing single-day price: $19/person; or at the multi-day price: $29/person (valid for up to seven consecutive days including the day of purchase). All Express Transportation options are available for purchase at all theme park ticket windows and Guest Relations, the Disney Springs ticket window, Disney Resort hotel concierge desks, Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin Hotel ticket desks, and at the check-in locations in each park. Views Around the World/This and That
Summer season is underway at Walt Disney World Resort. Historically, that usually means an upswing in attendance. With the relatively new seasonally tiered ticket pricing, that may be slightly moderated. Silver and Weekday Select Passholders are now blocked out until August 11. Many Silver Passholders made final visits to the parks over the weekend before their blockout days went into effect so that they could get a look at all the newest offerings around the Resort.

Disney Offers New Hire Incentive
We have previously reported on the Walt Disney World Resort's summer hiring drive. This week we received news that the Resort is offering up to a $500 New Hire Incentive Bonus for successful hires into full- and part-time opportunities in Housekeeping, Culinary, Bus Drivers, and Lifeguards. Now through June 30, 2017, new cast members in those roles will be eligible to receive a new hire bonus. Interested candidates should visit www.WaltDisneyWorld.jobs for full eligibility requirements, required number of days of employment to receive the bonus, and to see current openings. One Passholder's Tip
This section of the Update provides our MousePlanet readers with the benefit of my years of experience as a longtime Walt Disney World Four Parks Annual Passholder, and lots of personal trial and errors, one (hopefully weekly) tip at a time.
One Passholder's Tip: Week 18
Take a breath and remain calm
Last week, the Update's theme was “surprise and delight” which is what I felt Walt Disney World Resort and its cast delivered from Pandora, Pixar Live, Happily Ever After, Disney Movie Magic, and more. Not wanting to spoil the theme last week, I held this story until this week because it almost was not as wonderful as I wrote about due to another guest. Fortunately, I believe that because I did as I now recommend, I took a breath and remained calm, an almost awful experience never moved beyond being unpleasant and now the subject of this story.
As you may recall, after seeing the debut Music of Pixar Live concert at Disney's Hollywood Studios, I was heading over to Bay Lake Tower for one of my rare visits to Top of the World Lounge at Disney's Contemporary Resort. For those that do not know, that is a venue atop Bay Lake Tower that is only open to Disney Vacation Club Members using their points to stay in DVC accommodations on property (thanks to Pandora's opening, I had made such arrangements).
I had taken a window seat on a Disney bus (my left arm against the window) ultimately traveling from Disney's Hollywood Studios to Disney's Contemporary Resort. On the day I rode, the bus also had a stop at Disney's Wilderness Lodge and, based on my experience, you can never be sure which destination will be first (though you can ask the driver, I did not).
We sat at the Studios bus stop for quite some time as stragglers boarded and boarded and boarded the bus (which when you are a straggler you are usually happy about and when you had been waiting in line for quite awhile before boarding you usually are not). Eventually, the empty seat next to me became occupied by a guest with a very large purse dangling from her left arm and a folded stroller in her right hand. As she sat she struck me with the purse without apology. I chose not to say anything. The bus finally got underway.
Two times, three times, four times she struck me harder and harder, each time unapologetically (possibly obliviously, but maybe I am being generous) with her purse. On strike number five, I politely asked her if she would mind shifting her purse to the other arm. I offered to hold the stroller so she could rearrange. I thought it a civil way to address the situation.
Rather than have any civilized response, the other guest flew into a rage and told me that she was entitled to strike a fellow passenger; that I should just deal with it, as we are on “public transportation.” I again offered to help her re-arrange what she was holding so that we could both be comfortable. She, however, would have none of it and yelled, “if you do not shut up right now, I will beat you over the head with my stroller.” She then started yelling (what I do not remember) at a male companion who was standing at the front of the bus. All the while, the bus continued its journey and the driver was completely unaware of what was transpiring toward the back of his bus. Several fellow passengers sat with mouths agape, but did not intervene.
At this point, I decided it best to just take a breath and calmly withdraw. I could think of no reason for her escalation of a polite request but, like I suggested earlier, theme parks, plus heat and humidity, and who knows what else in this other person's world. I was fortunate that when we pulled into Wilderness Lodge she got off the bus without striking me again. After she got off the bus, I informed the driver but, at that point, all he could do was apologize. I continued on to Bay Lake Tower and ended up having a fine evening. Perhaps if the other guest had followed this Tip, no matter how annoyed she may have been at my (in my mind completely) polite request, I would not even have this story to share.
As always, be governed accordingly because your mileage may vary.

- Coronado Springs – A new 15-story tower overlooking Lago Dorado, the resort's central lake, will add 500 rooms featuring suites and concierge level services, and a rooftop dining facility that will include panoramic views of nighttime fireworks shows at the Theme Parks. Construction around some of the bus stops started earlier this month. The resort also plans to refurbish current resort rooms and transform some of its landscape. The project is expected to be completed 2019-20.
- Wilderness Lodge and Villas – Hidden Springs pool, resort beach, and playground closed. The opening of Disney Vacation Club's Copper Copper Creek Villas & Cabins at Disney's Wilderness Lodge is expected July 17. In the meantime, Roaring Fork is also closed.

There are lots of details about the free dining, a $200 Disney Gift Card, a 14-Day Ticket for the price of 7 (including Water Parks and Memory Maker) and a lot of fine print. Here are the highlights of the 14-night packages during summer 2018 holidays and all include Memory Maker photos, 14-Day Ultimate Ticket for the price of a 7-Day ticket (including FastPass+), and 12-month DisneyLife subscription:

Free Dine and Free Breakfast Offers are available to book 6 April, 2017 – 6 July, 2017, for selected arrivals 1 January – 18 March, 2018 and 6 April – 30 November, 2018.
