Walt Disney World Resort Update for March 28 – April 3, 2017

Walt Disney World Resort Update for March 28 – April 3, 2017

Writer's note: Since April Fools Day falls on a Saturday, we will spare you the fantasy-filled Walt Disney World Update that closes with the words “Happy April Fools Day!” Of course, as a regular MousePlanet reader, you probably already keep an eye out for wild rumors popping up around the web and its various chat boards, but this week is one (and Saturday, a day in particular) that may require a bit of extra vigilance. With that, on with the news, actual Views around the World (save the one artistic indulgence immediately below), One Passholder's Tip: Photography Fun Edition #2 and more!

The crossing cranes high above the Star Wars construction site inside Disney's Hollywood Studios resembled something iconic, and, since April Fool's Day is this coming Saturday, we took a little artistic license. Photo and embellishments by Alan S. Dalinka.

Pandora: Disney Announces Previews, Fastpass+, and Extra Magic Hours

As the officially announced May 27 opening of Pandora–The World of Avatar at Disney's Animal Kingdom has now passed the two months away mark, Disney announced scheduled previews for Cast Members and Annual Passholders, the opening of Fastpass+ reservations, and Extra Magic Hours nightly (from May 27 through July 4) for guests staying at “select” Walt Disney World Resort hotels*. Pandora will feature two “one-of-a-kind” attractions: Avatar Flight of Passage, which will allow guests to fly on a banshee over the world of Pandora; and the family friendly Na'vi River Journey, which will send guests down a mystical river hidden within a bioluminescent rainforest.

*Historically, a “select” hotel has been either one which is owned and operated by Disney (including Disney Vacation Club properties) or one of the on-property hotels that have an agreement with Disney to be included in the Fastpass+ reservation and “Extra Magic” benefits. Hotels that are not owned and operated by Disney but are located on-property include Shades of Green, Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin, the Four Seasons Resort in Golden Oak, the Disney Springs Resorts along Hotel Plaza Boulevard, and the hotels at Flamingo Crossing. (Be aware that hotels within the Bonnet Creek Resort, though surrounded by Disney property, are not “on-property.”) Direct questions to your hotel's local management for the most up-to-date information.

Previews

As is common and appropriate, Cast Member previews are first up. The dates we are hearing are as early as May 5-6, and then again May 8-12. Cast must register April 5-17, with the number of guests they may bring along governed by their Main Entrance Pass benefits.

Disney sent Annual Passholders emails (reportedly in batches) inviting them to register to preview Pandora. Screenshot by Alan S. Dalinka. Content and image ©Disney.

Following Cast Member previews, Disney is holding Passholder previews starting May 13, and running in three sets of two-hour slots over a week's time. Based on comments posted on the Disney Parks Blog and on social media, registration for these previews was anything but smooth. Registration is already full notwithstanding the fact that Passholders could only reserve for themselves and any MyDisneyExperience-linked Family and Friends that also are Passholders and had granted full “All My Plans” sharing privileges. Disney has cautioned Passholders that “access to some areas of the Valley of Mo'ara on Pandora may be limited during your visit.”

Timing and a bit of good luck resulted in this Passholder's preview slot. Screenshot by Alan S. Dalinka. Content and image ©Disney.

As of the time of writing this Update (on Monday night), there has been no public announcement of any Disney Vacation Club previews. Sometimes DVC extends event invitations only to specific members. At minimum, I have not yet received one (DVC Member since 2000) and have not heard of others I know receiving them. Apart from whatever other testing and adjusting may be necessary, and other VIP visits, or media events Disney has planned, there may be additional preview “soft-openings” in the days leading up to the May 27 official opening.

Of course, there are no guarantees when it comes to “soft openings.” Watch out for rumors (some will be more reliable than others) and remember to be patient with Cast Members who are going to have to deal with the inevitable glitches (and, as the opening of Frozen Ever After showed, glitches can lead to hours and hours of down time). Watch our Social Media outlets and MousePad boards for our latest updates to what likely will be a rather fluid period.

Fastpass+ Reservations

On Friday, Disney also announced that Fastpass+ reservations opened for the two Pandora attractions up to 60 days prior to check in for guests staying at the “select” Walt Disney World Resorts (see note above). Like the tiered Fastpass+ systems in place at Epcot and Disney's Hollywood Studios preventing guests from reserving two top-tier attractions on the same day, Fastpass+ reservations can only be made in advance for one of the two Pandora attractions for each guest, not for both attractions on the same day (at least until after all three Fastpass+ reservations for a particular day are completed and then, only subject to any remaining availability which really means only if you happen to catch a cancelation at precisely the right moment). For guests without reservations but who have pre-purchased valid park admission and linked it to a MyDisneyExperience account, reservations will be available starting 30 days prior to their visit, beginning May 27, 2017. Based on our experience with Frozen Ever After at Epcot, we expect these Fastpass+ slots will be filled by Resort guests before the 30 day windows even open, but keeping an eye on MyDisneyExperience for reservations that open due to cancelations is always a good idea.

Because qualified resort guests may have had check-in dates within the 60 day window (as opposed to just on opening day), Fastpass+ reservations for the opening days of Pandora's new attractions quickly were scooped up to the point where online commenters have already begun to express frustration at being sold out for their preferred times and/or days. Perhaps knowing that there would be more demand than supply—likely given the on-going frustration of guests inability to book Fastpass+ reservations for Frozen Ever After even after nearly a year of its operation—Disney made one more fairly unprecedented announcement.

By having a Disney Vacation Club resort room reservation, I was able to make a Fastpass+ reservation for one of the new Pandora attractions on opening day. Screenshot by Alan S. Dalinka. Content and image ©Disney.

Extra Magic Hours

From May 27 through July 4, guests staying at the select Walt Disney World Resort hotels will have the opportunity to experience Pandora–The World of Avatar with special nighttime Extra Magic Hours from 11 p.m. until 1 a.m. These hours are in addition to the regular Extra Magic Hours already available, but these hours apply only to the Pandora area of the park. It will be interesting to see whether summer demand (or, perhaps, the volume of guest complaints) causes this benefit to be extended beyond July 4.

A Pixar Symphony on Stage This Summer at Disney's Hollywood Studios

Before this week, we already knew that Walt Disney World had a lot planned for Memorial Day weekend around the Resort. It will mark the opening of Pandora–The World of Avatar at Disney's Animal Kingdom and the conclusion of the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival. Even Magic Kingdom, though lacking a nighttime parade this summer, has its new Happily Ever After fireworks show (which opens only a couple of weeks earlier) to help draw some nighttime attendance to Disney's flagship Florida park. Now we know what Disney's Hollywood Studios has to add to the traditional weekend start of summertime.

The Music of Pixar LIVE! will be presented three times nightly for a limited run starting May 26 at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Image ©Disney.

Starting May 26, a live orchestra—likely including many of the same performers that participate in Epcot's Candlelight Processional performances in winter—will take the stage three times nightly at Theater of the Stars on Sunset Boulevard at Disney's Hollywood Studios (following the regularly scheduled daily performances of “Beauty and the Beast – Live on Stage”). The orchestra will showcase “memorable music” from Pixar Animation Studios films such as Toy Story and the up-coming Cars 3. The show will also include appearances by Disney•Pixar characters such as Woody, Jessie, Mike and Sulley, the Incredibles, and more.

Disney describes this new concert-style show as a “limited run,” but no end date has yet been announced.

“Cars 3” Tour Started A Nationwide Road Trip at Disney Springs

Disney Springs was the first stop of “Disney·Pixar's Cars 3 Road to the Races” nationwide tour this past Thursday through Sunday. It was set up in the former Marketplace bus stop (as the Christmas Tree Trail had been this past winter), and included an extended preview of the upcoming film (including what the tour calls an “exclusive clip”), which opens in theatres on June 16. The tour also includes family activities and photo opportunities with three life-size characters: Lightning McQueen, Cruz Ramirez, and Jackson Storm.

The tour will make 26 more stops across the country including Miami, Dallas, Chicago, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Denver, and Los Angeles. More details are on the Tour's website: Cars3tour.com. As the film's opening date approaches, it arrives at Disneyland Resort, June 12-13. Additional photos from the tour's stop at Disney Springs are available on our Facebook page.

One Passholder's Tip: Week 10
Photography Fun Edition #2: Facebook Messenger Filters Revisited.

Back in the February 7, 2017, edition of the Walt Disney World Resort Update, I introduced the Photography Fun series of occasional tips to provide MousePlanet readers with suggestions for taking fun photographs while visiting Walt Disney World or other places their cameras visit. Unless otherwise stated, these tips are mine alone, and they are neither intended as endorsements of any particular products, nor are they sponsored. As always, your mileage may vary.

Facebook Messenger App has several filters for taking photos that can only be used if set within the app before using the app to take a photo. Screenshot and Photos by Alan S. Dalinka.

In my first Photography Fun tip, I urged readers to search the apps installed on their devices for hidden effects that may help create interesting photos. I only mentioned Facebook's Messenger App in passing then, but it was the app responsible for helping create the photos I showed.

I mention it again now because Facebook continues to offer more and more choices for creating interesting photos only in its Messenger App, not in the Facebook App itself. As of this past weekend, it offered more than a dozen different photo filters in Messenger which can only be used when actually using the app to take a photo (in other words, not filters that you can apply after-the-fact). For those that like “stickers” and other effects that can be added after a photo is taken, it has those too and regularly changes them as various holidays and seasons come around on the calendar.

To access the filters, launch the Messenger App, from the app's home screen, select the camera button (the circle at the bottom of the screen), then select the smiley face at the top so that you can then pick a filter. (You can see in the smiley face and some of the filters that were available this weekend in the screen capture in this section of the Update.) After you have taken the photo, you can select the download button in the lower left hand corner of the screen (if you have granted the app permission to access your Camera Roll) or you can select the send button on the lower right side to send it to a contact in the Messenger App.

This past Sunday, I tweeted and MousePlanet retweeted a number of “filtered” photos from around Epcot and Magic Kingdom that the official Walt Disney World Resort Twitter account staffed by Guest Services Cast Members, @WDWToday, really seemed to enjoy. Additional photos are also on MousePlanet's Instagram and Facebook pages. Tag your favorite Walt Disney World photos with @MousePlanet when you post them to social media!

This and That

…Today, March 28, is the twentieth anniversary of the opening of ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort. Disney has told us that it is planning some special celebratory events in the year ahead, and we will share newsworthy details when they are available. The Complex was originally named Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex and was rebranded under Disney's ESPN brand in 2010.

…Magic Kingdom's regular showings of the Wishes fireworks show draws to a close on May 11 to make way for the new Happily Ever After show on May 12. If you missed Disney Parks Blog's #DisneyParksLIVE stream of the fireworks on Thursday, March 23, a replay is still available (at least as of this Update's publication), including a few comments about the creation of Wishes and a few moments about the new Happily Ever After show's brand-new theme song. Separately, Disney also posted video of the theme's recording session featuring country music artist Angie Keilhauer and singer Jordan Fisher (Moana soundtrack and past cast of Broadway's Hamilton).

…Amorette's Patisserie, the Disney Springs headquarters for domed cakes and other artistic pastry creations that sometimes look too good to eat (and have price tags to match), is introducing its new “Cake Decorating Experience” beginning March 31. The advanced reservations required experience, will be offered from 8:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. every Friday through May 5. For $129 (plus tax, ages 10 and up), one or two guests decorate their own Mickey Dome Cake (which regularly retails for $55 plus tax). A second cake can be purchased for an additional $40 plus tax). The experience also includes “complimentary” specialty coffee, mimosas and bellinis. You do get to take your decorated cake home! Space is limited. …Disney Parks Blog reported on Walt Disney World Resort's latest good corporate citizenship deed. “VoluntEARS from the Walt Disney World Resort recently joined forces with a Central Florida community to create the 75th nationwide KaBOOM! playground – giving hundreds of local children and their families a safe play environment that cultivates healthy lifestyles and inspiration.” The playground is located within the Golden Oaks community in Winter Park, Florida (not to be confused with the Golden Oak area of Walt Disney World which includes the Four Seasons Resort).

…Our friends at Small World Vacations let us know that Disney has a made a summer discount offer where you can save up to 25% on rooms at select Walt Disney World Resort hotels for stays most nights May 28-Aug. 31, 2017 when you book March 27-July 14, 2017. Walt Disney World Resort tickets may be used January 1 through December 19, 2017. Thanks to our reader Dr. Smith who alerted us that the website militarydisneytips.com notes that April 9-23 are no longer listed as blockout dates for Disney's Armed Forces Salute.

Active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets for themselves and up to five additional family members or friends. No more than six Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or spouse) pursuant to this offer. All tickets and options are non-transferable and must be used by December 19, 2017.

Military Salute – Hotel discount

Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates offered to service members under this program, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call 407-939-7830 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. The website Military Disney Tips.com says the offer is 30-40 percent, based on room category.

The 2017 offer is valid most nights from January 1 through December 19, 2017. Like the ticket offer, the hotel discounts are not valid April 9–23, 2017.

Travel Discounts for Florida Residents

La Nouba by Cirque du Soleil – Subject to availability, Florida residents can get discounts for groups of three or more tickets for shows now through April 29. With the discount, a family of four can purchase tickets for as low as $32.25 per ticket for Category 3 seating. Discounted Family Pack tickets are also available for Category 1, Category 2 and Front and Center. For tickets, call (407)939-7328 or visiting the La Nouba box office. (Proof of Florida residency required for discount.)

Travel Discounts for Canada Residents

MousePlanet reader Scott S. alerted us to an offer for Canadian residents. Canadian residents receive a 25% discount on 4-day or longer tickets purchased. The discounted rate for a 4-Day adult base ticket is $244.00 USD, compared to $325.00 USD when purchased at the gate. A 10-day adult base ticket is $300 USD, a savings of $100 from the main gate price. Scott S. just alerted us that the offer has been extended to tickets purchased through May 20, 2017.

This offer is only good for Canadian citizens with valid passport, or residents of Canada with valid proof of Canadian residency. The tickets are sold as an exchange certificate, and must be exchanged for park ticket upon arrival. There is no expiration date on the unused tickets, but once activated the tickets must be used within 14 days of first entry.

You can see the full details on the Walt Disney World website. Thanks Scott for the heads up!
