Writer's note: Alan will be back next week with a whole bunch of holidays around Walt Disney World Updates and a report on the latest destination on Star Tours: The Adventures Continue. Disney Springs started its holidays celebrations on November 10, including the opening of this year's edition of the bigger Christmas Tree Trail. On November 13, this year's Epcot International Food & Wine Festival concluded its long (but Hurricane Irma-interrupted) run. The (renamed for 2017) Epcot International Festival of the Holidays gets underway on November 19, with Candlelight Processional performances starting November 24.
So, with that, on with this week's Update.

Ultimate Disney Christmas Package
Christmas is 6 weeks away, you haven't figured out what to give your family, you don't know what you're going to do with the kids during their school break, and you don't even want to think about cooking Yet Another holiday meal. Solution: book the new Ultimate Disney Christmas Package, and leave the rest of the planning to Disney.
Walt Disney World has just launched a new holiday travel package offering that they hope will become a new family tradition for some Disney fans. Starting at $2800 for a family of four, the Ultimate Disney Christmas Package offers a creative menu of features and benefits that may prove very attractive to harried holiday travelers.
The package is something like a low-key Adventures by Disney trip, with set arrival and departure dates, and a scheduled activity most evenings. Guests arrive on Thursday, December 21, and spend the first evening at Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party at the Magic Kingdom. During the rest of the visit, guests can visit the four theme parks at their leisure, courtesy of the included park-hopper tickets. After park-hopping on Friday, guests head to Animal Kingdom for exclusive nighttime access to Pandora – The World of Avatar.
On Saturday, the package includes an “exclusive holiday Character experience” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Christmas Eve dinner is served at Epcot Sunday night, with an exclusive dining celebration. There are no scheduled activities for Christmas Day, but guests will receive a “special holiday gift” in their hotel room. Tuesday, December 26 is departure day, with guests arriving back home with plenty of time to recover and prepare for New Year's Eve.
The package includes a 5-night stay at a participating Walt Disney World Resort Hotel. The starting rate of $2800 is valid at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort; a room at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge jumps the price to $3800 for a family of four. Of course, room availability is limited, so you'll likely pay a bit more for an available room.
Can you book a similar package for less money going a la carte? Possibly, but it's going to take some work—and that's exactly what this package is meant to help you avoid. After all, booking a normal WDW vacation this late in the game means your Christmas Eve dinner choices are likely limited to hot dogs from Casey's Corner, or a 3:00 p.m. seating at Restaurant Marrakesh (Not that there's anything wrong with that). This package at least comes with that detail handled, so maybe you won't mind so much that you won't get any of the other table service reservations you'd like during the busy holiday week.
A semi-inclusive holiday travel package is a new marketing strategy for Disney, but there might just be a market for it. Thanksgiving- and Christmas-week sailings aboard the Disney Cruise Line are already quite popular with families who are happy to trade the hassle (and maybe snow) of a home-based holiday for a sunny, all-inclusive Disney vacation.
My own family took this option years ago, when, while planning for a Thanksgiving family reunion at Walt Disney World, the discussion turned to which DVC resort had the biggest ovens and dining tables. At the point where someone seriously suggested booking a taxi to transport a roasted turkey from one resort to another, I called a halt to the proceedings, and then called a travel agent to book a family reunion cruise.
Had this package been an option at the time, our family may well have opted for the Walt Disney World vacation after all. The Ultimate Disney Christmas Package has many of the same advantages of that worry-free cruise experience we enjoyed, but with more flexibility.
You can find more details about the Ultimate Disney Christmas Package on the Walt Disney World website. Book by December 10, 2017. Call your favorite travel agent, or (407) 827-6444 to book through Disney.
Last-minute Thanksgiving dining
Speaking of Casey's Corner hot dogs, there are other options if you haven't yet made reservations for your Thanksgiving meal at Walt Disney World. While the Le Celliers and Liberty Tree Taverns of The World are already at capacity, there are still open tables at some new or less-obvious dining locations.
The Na'vi interpretation of the classic Thanksgiving meal, as served at the Satu'li Canteen in Pandora – The World of Avatar, includes cranberry boba pearls. Photo © Disney.
Peking Turkey for Thanksgiving dinner may sound like the plot of a new National Lampoon movie, but when the dish comes from the kitchen of Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto, it's worth another look. Morimoto Asia in Disney Springs will serve a Peking Turkey Dinner, with roasted pork fried rice “stuffing,” Japanese-style candied yams, cranberry-litchi chutney and Szechuan peppercorn gravy. The prix-fix menu is $48 per person. Reservations are available via Open Table.
Several other Disney Springs locations, including Frontera Cocina and STK Orlando have limited availability; check the Walt Disney World website for the latest offerings.
Inside the theme parks, the aforementioned Restaurant Marrakesh, Tokyo Dining and Nine Dragons Restaurant all have openings on Thanksgiving. You're on a Disney vacation, so why not break with tradition and give thanks for the opportunity to try a new cuisine?
If you don't need the security of a reserved table to make your holiday dinner special, there are some interesting options to be had at the quick-service restaurants around Walt Disney World. The demonstration kitchens of Epcot's Sunshine Seasons serve a wide variety of entrees, with an oak-grilled rotisserie chicken or slow-roasted pork loin offering a reasonable alternative to turkey. For purists, a traditional Thanksgiving turkey dinner with all of the trimmings will be served as well.
The ABC Commissary at Disney's Hollywood Studios has a chicken and ribs combo platter at lunch, which is joined by a flat-iron chimichurri steak or lemon-pepper salmon at dinner. In the Magic Kingdom, you can use the mobile ordering option on the My Disney Experience app to order a special Thanksgiving meal from Pecos Bill's Tall Tale Inn and Cafe, featuring turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, cranberry sauce, and gravy.
Mobile ordering is also available at the Satu'li Canteen in Pandora – The World of Avatar at Animal Kingdom. The restaurant will celebrate its first Thanksgiving with a platter of wood-grilled roasted turkey breast with gravy, apple and sage stuffing, green beans, orange marmalade glazed sweet potatoes with candied pecans, mashed potatoes and cranberry boba pearls.
Canadian Resident Ticket Offer
Through February 10, 2018, residents of Canada can purchase discounted tickets to visit the Walt Disney World Resort anytime in 2018. The offer is valid on 4-day or longer Magic Your Way tickets, and represents a 20% savings off the ticket booth price of the one-park-per-day ticket. A 4-day ticket starts at $280 (USD) for adults, with a 10-day ticket running $352 (USD). The park hopper option is available for an additional $60 per ticket, and no discount applies. Tickets for children ages 3-9 run $264 to $336 (USD).
“We believe this special ticket offer will help our Canadian guests in planning a visit to The Walt Disney World Resort in Florida,” says Marlie Morrison, Managing Director, Disney Parks (Canada). “Guests can experience the all-new 'Pandora – The World of Avatar' at Disney's Animal Kingdom and 'Happily Ever After', the most spectacular fireworks display in Magic Kingdom's history.”
This offer is valid only for advance purchases, and will not be honored at the theme park ticket booths. Tickets purchased are issued in the form of an exchange voucher, which must be redeemed for valid tickets upon arrival at Walt Disney World. All adults (age 18 and older), must show valid proof of Canadian residency, including a government-issued photo ID, to exchange the vouchers upon arrival in Walt Disney World.
To purchase the vouchers, Canadian residents can call (407) 939-4230, or buy online at www.Disneyworld.ca/Tickets. Note that you must use a Canada billing address when purchasing these tickets.
The Great Floridian Bake-off
If your Disney holiday tradition includes Resort-hopping to see the magical gingerbread and chocolate creations that grace the hotel lobbies, plan to add new stops on your tour itinerary this year. Check out the new and returning displays located around Walt Disney World, including a new entry from Disney Springs.
A 19-year tradition continues with the latest gingerbread creation at Disney's Grand Floridian. Photo © Disney.
Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa has created a new gingerbread house for 19 years. The life-sized model is on display in the lobby, and was constructed using over 10,000 pieces of gingerbread. Stop by the display to enjoy daily decorating classes, or to purchase a cookie to take home. If you collect the annual gingerbread pin, this year's design features the penguins from Mary Poppins.
An edible holiday carousel featuring Lilo & Stitch is on display at Disney's Yacht & Beach Club Resort. The spinning creation is crafted from edible components including chocolate, sugar sculpture, and gingerbread. See if you can spot all 18 hidden Mickeys in the design, added to commemorate the 18th anniversary of the carousel. The annual collectors pin features Lilo & Stitch.
New this year is a Gingerbread Cinderella Castle at Disney's Contemporary Resort. The 18-foot tall display is done in the style of Mary Blair, with a nod to “it's a small world,” and is crafted gingerbread, chocolate, and fondant. Find it on the third floor of the hotel.
Also new this year is a gingerbread display at Amorette's Patisserie in Disney Springs. Look closely to see if you can find the heart hidden among the creation, which incorporates 15 pounds each of honey, dark chocolate, and eggs.
The Lincoln Memorial joins the gingerbread United States Capitol Building on display in Epcot's The American Adventure Pavilion. The Tusker House Restaurant in Disney's Animal Kingdom will also feature an African-inspired gingerbread Market Place display, crafted with over 25 pounds of dark chocolate.
Epcot Candlelight Calendar
The full list of this year's scheduled celebrity narrators for Epcot's Candlelight Processional during the Epcot International Festival of the Holidays is available in our Google Calendar of Epcot Events. You can also add it to any Calendar that supports the iCal format (like iPhone and Mac) by copying this link.
The calendar is provided “As is, where is” and without any guarantees, as a courtesy. Given the effort it took to create it, we do respectfully request that you do not post our entire calendar on another site without first asking our permission. We do not know why Walt Disney World Resort has not created this sort of functionality outside of the My Disney Experience app itself.

NOTE: ONLY SOME DISCOUNTS FOR THE 45th ANNIVERSARY OF WALT DISNEY WORLD RESORT HAVE BEEN EXTENDED THROUGH DECEMBER 30, 2017. OTHER DISCOUNTS AND BENEFITS HAVE EXPIRED OR CHANGED AS OF OCTOBER 1. For the most up-to-date list of locations offering dining discounts to Annual Passholders, visit this page of DisneyWorld.com. Be aware that dining locations that previously were participating in the 20% discount celebrating the 45th Anniversary (excluding alcoholic beverages, tax, and gratuity), have announced that they will continue to do so through December 23, 2017. Many other dining locations offer Passholders 10% discounts during some or all meal periods (also excluding alcoholic beverages, tax and gratuity). The latest information on this page of DisneyWorld.com lists discounts at many merchandise locations across Walt Disney World Resort, including many locations that continue to show 20% discounts off regularly priced merchandise. However, we received several reports on October 1, that some locations were now only providing 10% discounts to Passholders. We will seek out clarification for a future Update, though, so far, every Disney Merchandise location we have visited, has continued to offer the 20% Passholder discount. We cannot confirm whether Magic Strollers, “a Disney featured stroller provider,” is continuing to honor its $5 discount on stroller rental when staying at a Disney Resort Hotel and using coupon code WDWAP17 to arrange your rental. It is no longer listed on the Passholder website. Check directly with the provider. Visit the DisneyWorld.com Special Offers page (filtered for Passholders) for information, or call 407-939-7676 to book by phone.
