Writer’s Note, News & Views
Let’s start the Update with Gingerbread News. With the winter holiday transformation underway at Walt Disney World Resort now that Halloween is in the rearview mirror, Disney has shared more details about what gingerbread creations guests will find around the resort this holiday season.
New this year, the EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays (November 29-December 30) will include a Gingerbread Spaceship Earth modeled after the park’s icon. The 8-foot-tall display will be inside CommuniCore Hall and, like the real version, Disney says it will “light up and dance to music periodically throughout the day” (with a countdown clock nearby to let you know when will be its next “dance”). Disney also says that CommuniCore Hall will be decked out in “seasonal décor inspired by the unique design of EPCOT” including “an enchanting forest with the Glittering Grove presented by Balsam Hill, where twinkling trees bring festive flair.”
Could this be the first Festival that CommuniCore Hall starts showing off how it was purpose-built as the park’s new Festival Center? Disney announced that two new Holiday Kitchens will be at CommuniCore Hall: Experimental Prototype Cookies of Tomorrow, including, of course, cookies, and the opportunity to purchase gingerbread triangles and a decorating kit. The outdoor Festival Favorites window will serve up Favorites of Festivals Past, details of which will be shared when Disney Parks Blog publishes its Festival of the Holidays Foodie Guide soon. Speaking of outside, CommuniCore Plaza will offer complimentary snowflake decorating, and its stage will be home to the several times daily performances of JOYFUL! A Celebration of the Season (at their new location).
Back to the Gingerbread, the Life-Size Baby Gingerbread Giraffe and Baby Zebra displays return for their fourth year to the lobby of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge starting November 24. These life-sized displays will stand nearly 7 feet tall. Nearby, guests can purchase a limited-edition pin, cookie jar, and holiday ornament inspired by Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.
At Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, starting today, November 6, the lobby celebrates the 25th anniversary of its life-size Gingerbread House. The display includes white chocolate candy canes, edible snowflakes (but, please, no touching), sugar poinsettias, and an 88-pound white chocolate Santa. All told, it’s 700 pounds of chocolate and over 10,000 pieces of gingerbread, the result of over 500 hours baking the gingerbread and 480 hours assembly. It features 25 hidden Mickeys scattered throughout. Limited-edition 25th anniversary merchandise including a pin, ornament, cookie jar, magnet, tumbler, t-shirt, and more are available for purchase. Remember that parking at Disney’s Grand Floridian is limited to guests with hotel and dining reservations, so to visit without those reservations, you will need to take Disney transportation like the monorail from the TTC or a bus from Disney Springs or one of the parks.
For those riding the monorail around the Magic Kingdom are resorts, when you get off at the Disney’s Contemporary Resort stop and find yourself in the fourth floor Grand Canyon Concourse starting November 8, you will be able to see the resort’s Gingerbread Castle Display. Back for its 13th year, Walt Disney Imagineers have designed a new overlay inspired by the Cinderella Castle Dream Lights (which no longer are installed at Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom). The display features 13 hidden Mickeys and hotel’s legendary 5-legged goat. You can also purchase limited-edition pins, cookie jar, and holiday ornament here, as well.
Celebrating only a mere 24 years, Disney’s Beach Club Resort returns its life-sized Holiday Carousel display (no date has been published for its return). This year’s theme features characters from “Mickey’s Christmas Carol.” It also has 24 hidden gold Mickeys placed throughout the display. Merchandise available to purchase here includes a limited-edition pin, cookie jar, and holiday ornament.
Across crescent lake, Disney’s BoardWalk Inn will feature its miniature gingerbread version of the BoardWalk itself. The BoardWalk Deli Gingerbread House will be in place starting November 12. Guests can purchase a limited-edition pin, cookie jar, and holiday ornament here too.

I do not do food reviews (in the Update or otherwise), but I will note that I especially enjoyed sampling the Korean “No Mayo” Salad and Creamy Chipotle Macaroni and Cheese (both of which were spicy), and the Caramel Banana Créme Brûlée.
This year’s event also features three interactive seminars taught by members of the resort’s award-winning food and beverage team, allowing guests to expand their knowledge in what the resort says is “a delicious way”:
- (NEW) Beer Here! will take guests on a flavorful journey through Florida’s craft beer scene, celebrating the vibrant and diverse brews of the Sunshine State
- (NEW) Salud! A Journey Through Spain guides attendees through Spain’s rich winemaking heritage, with cuisine pairing tips and more
- Craft Cocktails, a fan favorite, breaks down the components of a great cocktail and how to make a perfect drink in your own home
For the latest information or to purchase tickets, guests can visit SwanDolphinFoodAndWineClassic.com, like swandolphinfwc on Facebook, or call 1-888-828-8850. Discounted hotel packages are available with proof of ticket purchase. Seminars require separate tickets and space is limited. Information about the seminars can be found at swandolphinfoodandwineclassic.com/seminars/.
For the second year in a row, the event, which is taking place just ahead of Veterans Day, has partnered with a charity beneficiary that provides support to Veterans. This year, the event will make a donation to Wounded Warrior Project which provides support to wounded veterans who incurred a physical or mental injury, illnesses, or co-incident to their military service on or after September 11, 2001.
This & That & Reminders…
…NEW. Speaking of Veterans Day, November marks the beginning of National Veterans and Military Families Month, a celebration established in 1996 to honor the extraordinary service and sacrifice of those who served in the U.S. military and their families. Disney has a long-standing admiration for military service, and has rolled out a new collection of military-inspired merchandise at select locations at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort (while supplies last). The collection this year consists of four items, including a T-shirt, a Spirit Jersey, a water bottle, and a baseball cap.
…UPDATED REMINDER: For those looking for the after hours holiday fun, Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party after hours hard ticket events get underway starting November 8, and will be held on select nights through December 20, 2024. Tickets for the Christmas Party nights start at $169 (plus tax), and are still available for most event nights, though not the first night or the last. (Disney has invited MousePlanet to attend one of this year’s party nights, and we will share highlights on our social media and in next week’s Update.) Visit this page of DisneyWorld.com to check availability and buy tickets (and, if you are a Passholder or DVC Member, be sure to sign in for the discounts offered on select party nights). Like the just-ended Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, extra ticket required after-hours events gently sweep out day guests without party tickets at 6 p.m. and there will be no showing of the Happily Ever After Fireworks on those nights — indeed, December 18, 2024 will be the last night Happily Ever After is scheduled through the end of the year, as the park “treats” all guests to some of the holiday entertainment nightly after the party night ends (but, even if you’re an Annual Passholder, unless it’s an IncrediPass or you have a day ticket, you’ll be blocked out those dates). If you do have the ticket for the party, at the park’s main entrance, you can get your wristband and mix in with the day guests as early as 4 p.m. without a separate park ticket or reservation. If you have a ticket to be in the park during regular park hours and a ticket for the party, you can find wristband distribution locations scattered around the park where you can have your tickets checked and your wristbands issued. On party nights, ticketed guests can see Minnie’s Wonderful Christmastime Fireworks Show (starting at 10 p.m.), Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade (stepping off at 8:30 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.), Mickey’s Most Merriest Celebration (stage show at Cinderella Castle at 7:40 p.m., 9:25 p.m., 10:35 p.m. and 11:55 p.m.), .and, of course, special character greetings and dance parties around the park. Of course, there’s a foodie guide for the party published by Disney Parks Blog, and there’s now a Disney Parks Blog foodie guide for all of Walt Disney World for the holiday season too.

In the Half Marathon itself, Josh Baden from Lawrence, Kansas crossed the finish line first with a time of 1:16:29, a little more than a minute ahead of David Proudfoot of Lakewood Ranch, Florida, (1:17:32), and two minutes faster than last year’s winner Ian Bordelon of Orlando, Fla., (1:18:36). This was his third runDisney event and first half marathon win at Disney World. Lisa Hart, a United Kingdom native now living in Winter Garden, Florida, was the first woman to finish with a time of 1:22:37, well ahead of Leah Foley of Goodrich, Michigan, (1:28:05) and Maddison Saalinger of Miami, Florida (1:29:00). Linden Williamson of Seguin, Texas, was the top wheelchair finisher (58:03) this year followed by Heather Sealover of Clermont, Florida, (59:12) and Sidney Knox of Benton, Texas (1:18:31). …REMINDER: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will close as of January 6, 2025 for a year-long refurbishment, and will reopen sometime in 2026. Disney says the refreshed ride will reopen “with a little bit of new magic” The last day for fans to ride before the closure is January 5, 2025.
…REMINDER: The opening of “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” has been postponed until 2025. The updated show replaces “Voyage of the Little Mermaid” at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Park. That show closed with the theme parks at the start of the pandemic, and never reopened.
…REMINDER: Disney has officially announced the first phase of closures in DinoLand U.S.A. at Disney’s Animal Kingdom to make way for the Tropical Americas land scheduled to open in 2027. First to close as of January 13, 2025 are TriceraTop Spin, the Fossil Fun Games, and the Chester & Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures gift shop. The last day to visit these three Dino-Rama area attractions is Sunday, January 13. The rest of DinoLand USA, including the DINOSAUR attraction and Restaurantosaurus will remain open for now, but will eventually close as the Tropical Americas construction expands.
…REMINDER: Disney’s Blizzard Beach reopened November 4, 2024, which also means that Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon has closed for seasonal refurbishment. The Disney Water Parks Seasonal Pass remains available for $79 plus tax for a limited-time, providing admission through May 23, 2025. Disney Water Parks offer free parking for all guests. For more information on the seasonal pass, visit DisneyWorld.com.
…REMINDER: Disney Vacation Club announced a new option for those members eligible for Membership Extras named, “Membership Magic Beyond.” It is a new slate of optional benefits available to members that pay an annual fee (on top of the usual DVC dues). Its initial offering is $99, and will be available for purchase starting December 3, 2024, with benefits available January 12 through December 31, 2025. The monetary value of the benefits offered in that first year can exceed that price for those members that already plan to spend money on some of the categories offered. For example, a 30-day Disney PhotoPass service Memory Maker entitlement for Walt Disney World is included (which Disney values at up to $210.) Also included are available discounts (amounts not yet published) for 5-day weekday Walt Disney World theme park tickets (plus one water park admission) for the Member and up to 7 family members in the same household; 3-day weekday Disneyland theme park tickets including Lightning Lane Multi-Pass for the Member and up to 7 family members in the same household; and waiver of the $95 transaction fee when booking Disney Collection Resorts and experiences (think Adventures by Disney, Disney Cruise Line, Disney hotels that are not part of DVC, etc.). An interesting benefit for those that enroll (that DVC has not yet published a point chart for) is that members can use DVC points to purchase the Walt Disney World Disney Sorcerer Pass; and for those that purchase One-Time-Use Points for bookings other than hotel exchanges, a bonus One-Time-Use Point for each purchased (up to 12 Points for a total of 24 One-Time-Use Points in a Use Year). There are also some lounge benefits with character meet and greet opportunities when staying on a points reservation for those that enroll. The details published so far are posted on this page of the DVC website.
…REMINDER: Reservations by calling Member Services only are now open for DVC Members who own points at Disney’s Polynesian Villas & Bungalows to book stays in the new Island Tower addition, including new DVC Members that purchase their first points at Polynesian. All DVC Members can book with points online or by calling Member Services starting November 19. The new tower opens December 17, 2024. MousePlanet has been invited to a preview and dedication of the Island Tower on December 14, and we will share highlights on our social media and in a future Update.
…REMINDER: Disney Vacation Club announced additional Moonlight Magic events for 2025 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, EPCOT, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and Typhoon Lagoon. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or a travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today! As always, we remind our readers that Walt Disney World Resort theme park tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Florida or eligible for U.S. Military Personnel benefits. Historically, non-Florida residents tend to benefit the most by purchasing tickets in advance (and, of course, being mindful of the rules relevant to those tickets). Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside Disney property stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Walt Disney World Theme Park admissions, and may result in denial of entry. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks.
