Hotel guests to lose popular Early Entry perk in January

2026 Disneyland Resort vacation packages opened for booking last week, and there are some major changes coming to the Theme Park Perks offered to those who stay at Disneyland Resort Hotels starting January 5, 2026.

Disneyland Resort will end its Early Entry program effective January 5, 2026. MousePlanet file photo.

The most significant change for all hotel guests is the end of the Early Entry program, which currently offers guests of the three Disneyland Resort hotels 30-minute early entry to a designated theme park every day of their hotel stay. The perk alternates between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, and gives hotel guests a head start on the most popular rides and experiences.

Starting January 5, 2026 guests will instead receive one Lightning Lane entry to a Lightning Lane Multi Pass attraction during their Resort stay. To recap, instead of having 30 minutes of extra time in one of the theme parks each day, hotel guests will now receive one Lightning Lane pass per stay. One night or 6, the perk is the same.

This change benefits guests who didn’t like to get up early to rope drop the theme parks, or those who did not have a theme park reservation for the park at which Early Entry was offered that day. For everyone else, this is a pretty major downgrade in benefits, and it’s the second time since the pandemic that Disneyland has reduced this perk.

A sign welcomes Early Entry guests to Disneyland. MousePlanet file photo.

Prior to the 2020 theme parks closures, Disneyland actually offered two different early admission programs: Magic Morning and Extra Magic Hour. Extra Magic Hour was the perk offered to Disneyland Resort hotel guests, and provided a full hour of early access to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure for each day of their stay.

Magic Morning was an added perk that came with 3-day or longer passes, as well as the Southern California CityPass. This was valid for one hour of early entry to Disneyland park only on selected days, and did not require guests to be staying at a Disneyland hotel. It was valid once per ticket, and was a popular option for those who stayed at local hotels.

Disneyland ended both benefits with the pandemic, and in 2022 introduced the new Early Entry program for resort hotel guests only. The new program cut the access time from an hour to 30 minutes, but was initially offered at both parks every day. In 2024, Disneyland reverted to the alternating parks schedule.

Disney says this latest change is in response to low usage of the Early Entry program, and will provide all hotel guests with a perk they can use regardless of when they visit the theme parks. I’m going to argue that any decrease in usage is a direct result of changes Disney made to make the perk less valuable.

Hotel guests queue at the Grand Californian Hotel for Early Entry. MousePlanet file photo.

First, Disney dramatically shrank the pool of people eligible for the benefit by eliminating the Magic Morning perk entirely. Then the made Early Entry less of a benefit by cutting the access time in half. With an hour head start, my family could usually knock out all of Fantasyland and the open Tomorrowland attractions before rope drop, and were in a great position once the rest of the park opened.

Incidentally, this added time also meant we were more likely to head back to the hotel for an afternoon break or swim, actually enjoying more benefits of staying on property. With that hour cut down to 30 minutes, we could enjoy fewer attractions before the park opened, which meant waiting in longer and longer lines as the day went on.

I don’t see a way to frame this as anything but a cost-savings measure, something which saves Disney 30 minutes of payroll each day. And it honestly costs the company nothing – they’re just shuffling guests in a queue.

With Disneyland Resort hotel prices as high as they are compared to nearby hotels, cutting this perk could really change the math for some families. Personally, I’ve been pricing out a 4-night stay in February. Now, granted we need a wheelchair-accessible room for our family, but our options are $750 a night at the Disneyland Hotel, or $1018 for the entire stay at the Desert Inn and Suites right across the street from Disneyland. I’m not saying Early Entry alone would justify me spending the extra $2000 to stay at the Disneyland Hotel, but it’s all part of the equation. For some families, it might be the tipping point.

Pixar Place hotel to close theme park entrance

Guests at the Pixar Place Hotel have another change starting January 5, 2026. Effective that date, the dedicated hotel entrance to Disney California Adventure will be closed. It is not clear whether Pixar Place Hotel guests will be allowed to use the Grand Californian Hotel entrance to DCA starting January 5, or if they will need to walk through Downtown Disney and enter the park from the main entrance. Either way, this change takes away another perk of staying at this Disneyland Resort Hotel, and should be taken into consideration when booking a hotel.

Disneyland to Resume Sales of Select Magic Keys this week

Select Disneyland Resort Magic Keys will be available for sale starting Tuesday, August 26. Guests will be able to use their new passes starting with the Halloween Time and Plaza de La Familia celebrations, and through the new 12 months.

Just two Magic Key tiers will be available when sales resume next week, the Enchant Key (currently $974), and the Imagine Key ($599 ) which is available only to residents of Southern California. While these keys have the greatest number of blockout dates, Disney has added some Monday – Thursday availability in early December, 2025 for these keys, so new buyers will have a chance to use the passes before the holiday blockout season begins.

Screenshot of the expanded Enchant Key availability for the next six months.

At this time, the two most expensive keys – the $1,374 Believe Key, and the $1,749 Inspire Key – are available for renewal only. Magic Key holders who opt not to renew during their eligibility window will need to wait until Magic Key sales resume again to purchase a new pass if they wish to do so.

For future planning purposes, the most current prices and benefits for each of the Magic Key tiers can be found in the Tickets, Discounts and Promotions section below. They are all subject to change without notice.

Oga’s Cantina moves to walk-up only

Screenshot from the Disneyland website.

Oga’s Cantina made a big operational change last week when Disneyland announced the bar in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge would no longer accept new reservations. Instead, the cantina is moving to walk-up only, with a standby queue. Disney says it will honor any existing reservations.

The move came as a surprise to many, but it reflects the changes in Disneyland since Oga’s Cantina opened. At that time, Oga’s was the first place where day guests could purchase alcohol inside Disneyland without a reservation to the exclusive Club 33. Since then, Disneyland has added alcohol service to many table service restaurants, so Oga’s has lost that edge.

Another factor may be that, setting aside the immersive Star Wars theme, Oga’s isn’t the most attractive environment. The venue is mostly standing-room, with no bar stools and very limited table seating. If you come with a group, you’re likely to be split up. If you’re lucky enough to get a table, expect to share it with strangers. Factor in the very small menu of bar snacks, two-drink limit and enforced 45-minute time limit, and it doesn’t surprise me that demand seems to have cooled. On all of my visits the vibe has very much been, “get in, drink up and get out.”

At this time there are no announced changes at the Walt Disney World version of Oga’s Cantina.

Paint the Night schedules holiday hiatus

Disneyland’s Paint the Night parade will have it’s final 2025 performance on November 10, before going on hiatus for the holidays. The parade returned to Disneyland in May as part of the park’s 70th anniversary festivities, and is currently running during the Halloween Time promotion.

Disney has not announced an official return date for the parade once the Holidays at Disneyland promotion ends on January 7, 2026, but we expect both this parade and the Wondrous Journeys fireworks show will return in mid January for the final stretch of the Disneyland 70 celebration.

California to welcome second Disney Cruise Line ship

The Disney Cruise Line announced their Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 itineraries last week, and there was big news for California cruise fans. For the first time ever, two Disney Cruise Line ships will be based in California at the same time, with departures from San Diego.

The Disney Magic will set sail in California for two months with three-, four-, five-, six- and seven-night voyages in October and November 2026, before transitioning to Texas on a 14-night voyage from San Diego to Galveston featuring stops in the breathtaking Puerto Vallarta, Cartagena and Grand Cayman.

Joining the Disney Magic for seven months in San Diego, the Disney Wonder will offer guests a spectacular view of crystal-blue waters with itineraries ranging from three to seven nights between October 2026 and April 2027, stopping at Catalina Island in California, as well as Cabo San Lucas, Ensenada and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

With eight ships soon to be sailing in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, there are so many options for Disney fans to visit a new locale, explore a new ship or both. Our travel partners at Get Away Today can help you plan your next cruise – call 1-855-GET-AWAY, and be sure to mention you saw them on MousePlanet.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Tickets, Discounts and Promotions

Disneyland prices as of October 9, 2024.

Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!

This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.

Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.
