D23 returns to Anaheim
D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event officially begins this Friday, August 8 at the Anaheim Convention Center. Before the doors open at 9:00 a.m. that morning, Disney will have already hosted this weekend’s D23 Day at Angels Stadium, a D23 Night at the Anaheim Packing House on Tuesday, and D23 Day at the Disneyland Resort on Thursday (more details below).
In addition to the packed schedule of events at the Anaheim Convention Center, the event wraps up each night with a major presentation at the Honda Center.
Anaheim is going to be busy this week, and visitors need to set their expectations accordingly, even if you are not attending the event. There will be tens of thousands of people in town for D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event(which I am going to refer to as the Expo for the rest of this article, because the new official name doesn’t exactly roll off the keyboard). Many thousands of those people will have to make the 2.7-mile trip between the Anaheim Convention Center and the Honda Center each night for the signature presentations, which means the streets around the Resort, most especially Katella Blvd, will be jammed. The Anaheim Regional Transportation (ART) bus service will be heavily impacted by the event, as Disney is using that to shuttle badge holders between venues.
The Toy Story Parking Lot will be in heavy use during this event, both by cast members working the event but also Magic Key holders looking to avoid the $25 parking fee at the Anaheim Convention Center. The Toy Story Parking Lot is also the designated pick up and drop off location for ride share services during the Expo. If you’re driving into Anaheim just to visit the theme parks, I would avoid the Toy Story complex and park in the Mickey and Friends or Pixar Pals structures on the west side of the Resort.
If you have tickets for the Expo, whether a convention center-only package or the Ultimate Ticket with admission to the Honda Center, you’ve received a few dozen emails from D23 directly with more details about the event. Be sure to read those for detailed information about parking, admission, bag check and more. I also strongly recommend looking at the Transportation and Parking map below, because the event layout is not the same as past years. D23 Event Services is at the Anaheim Hilton, not in the convention center itself, and there are only four entrances into the convention center.
Attendees who had the old D23 Expo mobile app need to download the Disney D23 app on the Apple Store or Google Play store, as the old app is no longer supported.
Stay connected during D23
I will be on site covering D23 from the Anaheim Convention Center and the Honda Center each day, with Alan Dalinka backing me up from Florida. Alan noted that the timing of the Honda Center presentations, where we expect the major Disney Entertainment and Parks announcements to be made, isn’t great from a media standpoint. Much of the country will already be in bed by the time Josh D’Amaro takes the stage at 7:00 p.m. Pacific time Saturday night for the Disney Experiences showcase, so fans will either want to stay up late to experience it live, or catch the headlines Sunday morning.
I will be sharing my Expo experience via Instagram and Twitter/X, with some cross-posting to our Facebook page, and I invite you to follow along!
Expo reservations disappoint
With so many people attending D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event , Disney used a lottery system to allocate space for many of the presentations and offerings. Attendees submitted a list of the experiences they most wanted to attend, up to four per day. Disney sent reservation confirmations late last week, and I have yet to hear from anyone who is pleased with the reservations their received. The majority of people I heard from said they only received one or two reservations over the course of the three-day event, out of a possible 12 requests. One person was excited to see that he got three reservations for the weekend, until he realized they were all for the same Pixar Ball giveaway. Doug wrote, “I spent $250 for tickets and didn’t get into a single panel.”
There are three pieces of good news for fans who didn’t get the reservations they hoped for.
First, the email notification said that guests can “add, modify, or cancel your reservations” starting on Tuesday, August 6 at 10 a.m. PT. We have no idea how that will work, but it sounds like that will give attendees a second chance to scoop up reservations that are canceled by other guests. Visit ultimatefanevent.reservations.d23.com to join the virtual queue for Tuesday morning.
Second, Disney says that standby lines will be available for all of the presentations at the five Convention Center Event Stages and Talent Central, and for “most Show Floor Experiences.” You’ll want to arrive 45 minutes to an hour before the start of each show, but its definitely an option if there’s a can’t-miss presentation on the agenda.
Finally, not everything was assigned via random selection process. With as many as 15 events scheduled each hour of the convention, there is no shortage of things to do and see during the event. Check out the full event schedule for a complete listing of offerings, including some which have just been added in the past week.
D23 beyond the Expo
If you’re a local, or are arriving to Anaheim early for the D23 Expo, there are a series of events this week taking place apart from the main event.
Tonight, August 5 is the The Incredibles: 20th Anniversary Outdoor Screening with D23 & Street Food Cinema at the Pearson Park Amphitheater in Anaheim. Tickets are $37 per person, and were still available at press time.
Tuesday August 6 is D23 Night at the Anaheim Packing District presented by Ravensburger, publisher of the popular Disney Lorcana Trading Card Game. Whether you’re a game fan or a foodie, this event at a historic Anaheim location looks like a lot of fun.
Finally, Thursday August 8 is the the first-ever D23 Day at the Disneyland Resort on Thursday, August 8.
As we shared last week, all visitors to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure will receive a pair of D23 Mickey Mouse ear hats. You don’t need to be a D23 member to receive the ears, but supplies are limited. Even if you miss out on the ears, all visitors will receive complimentary unlimited digital downloads of Disney PhotoPass photos taken on August 8.
At Noon, a cavalcade of 23 characters and select Disney Legends will make its way down Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland Park. There are also limited-time character appearances at both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, exclusive merchandise offerings, and Disney Jr. Let’s Play! Party at Disney California Adventure.
Refurbishment season begins now
Just another reminder that the pre-Halloween refurbishment season no longer begins the day after Labor Day, and this year begins this week. In addition to the Critter Country closure at Disneyland, here’s what to expect if you visit this week:
Disneyland

- Space Mountain – closed August 5 through September 6 for refurbishment.
- Disneyland Monorail – closes August 12 for refurbishment. Reopening date not published.
Disney California Adventure

Reservations now open for Mickey’s Autumn Adventures at Storytellers Cafe
Disney announced earlier this year that Storytellers Cafe would receive a “autumn-inspired breakfast and brunch” this year, and reservations are finally open. The meal begins August 3, and Mickey and pals will appear in new Autumn-inspired costumes at breakfast and brunch.
Breakfast is now $65 per adult (a $10 increase); $36 per child age 3-9 (a $3 increase). Breakfast is served 7:00 to 10:45 a.m. with brunch offered from 11:00 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. (If you’re flexible about time, the brunch menu has few more options, but everything is subject to change).
Dinner is served starting at 4:30 p.m., but the Disney characters do not make the rounds during this meal. Starting September 3 the price is $58 per adult (a $6 increase), and $30 per child (a $1 bump).
Reservations open 60 days in advance through the Disneyland website or mobile app.
We are still waiting for reservations to open for the Halloween buffet at Goofy’s Kitchen at at the Disneyland Hotel, and for the Halloween Screams viewing package at the Tomorrowland Skyline Terrace in Disneyland.
Disney teases Oogie Boogie Bash appearances
Your reaction to last week’s Oogie Boogie Bash announcements probably depends a great deal on whether or not you purchased tickets to the after-hours event.
First, the Disneyland Instagram posted this teaser about two new Villains joining the party. Fans instantly guessed the images related to Hades from Hercules and Dr. Doofenshmirtz from the Disney Channel animated series Phineas and Ferb. The latter appeared to be validated when Dan Povenmire, who co-created the show and also voices Doofenshmirtz in the series, replied “I was wondering where I left my lab coat.” A number of the reactions I saw to that post were along the lines of “AHHHHHHHHHH WHY DIDN’T I BUY TICKETS!?!?!” While we’ve seen Hades in various forms at the Disney theme parks over the years, to the best of my knowledge this would be Doofenshmirtz’s first appearance.
Then Disney shared a glimpse of the merchandise to be released at the event. The Minnie Mouse: Hocus Pocus Halloween Dress-Up Sipper appears identical to the one released in 2023, but the new sweatshirts, Loungefly backpack and headband are new for 2024.
Magic Key promotions for Halloween Time
The Magic Key Portal on the Disneyland mobile app was updated with the latest offers for Magic Key holders. Here’s what is available starting August 19.
- A series of four Villains Trading Cards will be released, and Magic Key holders can pick up a different one each week. Dates, time and locations have yet to be released.
- Magic Key holders can take a special Disney PhotoPass Magic Shot featuring Yzma from The Emperor’s New Groove, and receive a complimentary digital download. The photo location is across from the Matterhorn Bobsleds, and is open from Noon to 9:00 p.m. daily, August 19 through September 14.
- Magic Key holders who also have tickets to Oogie Boogie Bash can purchase a special Magic Key t-shirt and pin at select merchandise locations during the event. There will be a special photo opportunity at the event under the Silly Symphony Swings, where Magic Key holders can also receive a Hades patch and score extra candy.
- On August 20, Disneyland will release an exclusive stainless steel tumbler for Magic Key holders. Pricing was not released.

This and That
Mug collectors need to clear some space for two new releases this week.
On Thursday, August 8 the new Skipper’s Adventure Mug by artist Mookie Sato will be released at Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar at the Disneyland Hotel. Disney will use the Mobile Ordering system so guests can pre-purchase the mug and pick it up at the Disneyland Hotel. Mookie Sato will also be on hand Tuesday to sign the mug. Pricing was not released, but I was pleased to see that this mug will be served with a non-alcoholic drink, perhaps the first time that’s been an option for one of these product releases.
Also on August 8, a new Hatbox Ghost sipper mug will be released at Disneyland, commemorating the 55th anniversary of the Haunted Mansion. We’ve seen this mug before, but this version has been updated with new sound effects.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.
Current Discounts and Promotions
Disneyland prices as of October 11, 2023.
Note: MousePlanet does not edit past Updates to reflect price increases; for up-to-date prices, check the most recent Disneyland Resort Update. Several current promotions offer discounted admission to the Disneyland Resort. For your convenience, we have grouped the discount offers based on the number of days the tickets are valid. Check out the category that best matches the amount of time you plan to spend at the resort, and pick the offer that works best for you. And keep those tips coming—let us know if you find a better or different offer, so we can share it with other readers!
This first section is a list of discounts on ticket-only purchases. Though it has become more common in recent years, Disneyland tickets are rarely offered at deep discounts unless you are a resident of Southern California or Northern Mexico. For residents outside that area, the best discounts available tend to be simple advance purchase discounts. If you know of any additional discounts, offers, promotions, or contests that should be listed in this section, drop us a line. Note, we are no longer listing offers from the Anaheim-Orange County Visitor & Convention Bureau, as their convenience fee negates any savings.
Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. Only purchase Disney theme park tickets directly from Disney, an authorized seller, or travel agency like MousePlanet travel partner Get Away Today.

Anaheim Resident Ticket Offer – August 5 – September 26, 2024
The Anaheim Resident Ticket Offer is a one-day, one-park ticket to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure for just $69 per person, ages 3 and older. You must be a resident of the city of Anaheim (ZIP codes 92801 – 92809, 92812, 92814 -92817, 92825, 92850 and 92899) to take advantage of this offer.
You can purchase these promotional tickets online through the Disneyland website, by phone at 800-506-6720, or in person at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Eligible residents are limited to purchasing five tickets per person, per day.Disney says proof of eligible residency, including valid government-issued photo ID, is required for purchase and admission, which means you can not buy this ticket for out-of-town friends and family.
There is no option to upgrade this ticket to a one-day park hopper ticket or a multi-day ticket. It’s also important to note that theme park reservations are required to use these tickets – you can’t just buy them and walk right in without a reservation. Disney recommends checking the reservations availability calendar before you purchase the tickets, and make your reservations immediately to secure the dates you want.

3-Day Disneyland Ticket Offer – June 10 – September 26, 2024
Visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks three weekdays between June 10 and September 26, 2024 for as little as $149 for ages 3-9, or $249 for ages 10 and older using a new discounted ticket which goes on sale May 29, 2024. That represents a savings of up to $219 off the regular price of a three-day, one-park-per-day ticket for children ages 3-9. The adult offer is a $141 discount, and is the same price than the summer 2023 deal.
You can also choose between a ticket good Monday through Thursday OR a slightly more expensive ticket good any day of the week. There are also options to add park hopping and Disney Genie+ service to your ticket at the time of purchase.
This new offer differs from past discouts discounts, so be sure to pay close attention to details before you purchase.
The 3-Day Disneyland Ticket Offer is a 3-day, 1-park-per-day ticket that offers admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure:
- The weekday ticket – starting at $149 for ages 3-9; $249 for ages 10 and older. Three weekdays (Mondays through Thursdays only) between June 10 and September 26, 2024
- The any day ticket – starting at $199 for ages 3-9; $299, for ages 10 and older. Three days (any day of the week, including weekends) between June 10 and September 26, 2024
You can use every day of the 3-Day Disneyland Ticket at the same theme park, or visit different parks on different days, but you can’t use it to enter both parks on the same day unless you add the park-hopper option ($70 per ticket)
There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means that you can use the first admission on June 10 and wait until September 26 to use the remaining admission. However, remember that you must make a theme park reservation for each day that you want to use the ticket. Disney also warns that reservations for this category of ticket are not guaranteed for any particular dates, and that a date may sell out in this ticket category though other ticket types have reservations of available. It is probably best to purchase early and make reservations as soon as they open for your desired travel dates. Each day of use constitutes one full day of use.
Tickets expire on September 26, 2024, and have no holiday blackouts. That means that you can visit on the 4th of July holiday using a weekday ticket, assuming reservations are available.
May purchase up to 15 tickets per eligible person per day. Tickets are nonrefundable, may not be sold or transferred for commercial use and exclude activities/events separately priced. Offer may not be combined with other ticket discounts or promotions. Subject to restrictions and change or cancellation without notice.

Active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets for themselves and up to five additional family members or friends. No more than six Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or spouse) pursuant to this offer. All tickets and options are non-transferable and must be used by December 13, 2024.
This offer can only be purchased at a participating US military base ticket office.
2024 Military Hotel discounts
Military discounts are valid for stays most nights from January 2 through December 13, 2024. You can book now through December 10, 2024, and travel must be completed by December 14, 2024.
Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (833) 618-0536 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30% to 40% off, based on room category. Concierge rooms, Signature or Premium suites, or 2-or 3-Bedroom Villas are excluded from the offer, and this offer can not be combined with any other discount.
Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member, provided the spouse stays in one of the rooms booked.
